• Create and Share a File (Also a mysterious error)

  My goal is to create a XML file and then send it through the share Intent. I'm able to create a XML file using this code FileOutputStream outputStream = context.openFileOutput(fileName, Context.MODE_WORLD_READABLE); PrintStream printStream = new PrintStream(outputStream); String xml = this.writeXml(); // get XML here printStream.println(xml); printStream.close(); I'm stuck trying to retrieve a Uri to the output file in order to share it. I first tried to access the file by converting the file to a Uri File outFile = context.getFileStreamPath(fileName); return Uri.fromFile(outFile); This returns file:///data/data/com.my.package/files/myfile.xml but I cannot appear to attach this to an email, upload, etc. If I manually check the file length, it's proper and shows there is a reasonable file size. Next I created a content provider and tried to reference the file and it isn't a valid handle to the file. The ContentProvider doesn't ever seem to be called a any point. Uri uri = Uri.parse("content://" + CachedFileProvider.AUTHORITY + "/" + fileName); return uri; This returns content://com.my.package.provider/myfile.xml but I check the file and it's zero length. How do I access files properly? Do I need to create the file with the content provider? If so, how? Update Here is the code I'm using to share. Are you missing a call to unregisterReceiver()? I've researched this error and can't find anything obvious. Both of these links suggest that I need to unregister a receiver. I have a receiver setup, but it's for an AlarmManager that is set elsewhere and doesn't require the app to register / unregister. Code for openFile(...)   The implication is a memory problem. In this case, it doesn't get very far, although if it starts, it's fine. ...I've read the wordexp docs several times; they say they allocate new objects, so you just set up that type and call them with the address. But always with that same exception, and always in the same place. The Google has it that this actually means, somehow, that it's too soon to allocate memory. But all the instances I could find were memory errors on the part of the programmer. Overruns, etc. And I can't find any docs on when it IS safe to allocate memory. Now, the path that expands there is nowhere near 400 characters. it's this (it it completes): /Users/flake/ak-plugins/ and this: /Users/flake/ ...if it doesn't. the strcpy... copies 2nd param to first. Theirs to mine. And it works! under 10.5. :/ So is wordexp broke? Is 10.6 broke? Am I cRaZy? • Binary operator overloading on a templated class (C++)

  Hi all, I was recently trying to gauge my operator overloading/template abilities and as a small test, created the Container class below. While this code compiles fine and works correctly under MSVC 2008 (displays 11), both MinGW/GCC and Comeau choke on the operator+ overload. As I trust them more than MSVC, I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong. • Landscape-only orientation + view controllers: What am I still missing?

  Hi. I can't believe I am still having problems with screen orientation, now on the iPad. This is an app that only supports one of the two landscape orientation. In my info.plist, I include: <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight</string> <string>UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft</string> In Interface Builder, all my views are created in landscape orientation. Only the main Window is not, but I don't see a way to change that. When launched, I get the following coordinates for my main window and the main viewcontroller view: Window frame {{0, 0}, {768, 1024}} mainView frame {{0, 0}, {748, 1024}} (Changing the frame at runtime to be what I expect, does not change the odd behavior.) All other views after that show these coordinates when summoned (when loaded but before being presented): frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of instrumentSelect {{20, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of settings {{0, 0}, {467, 300}} In all my viewControllers, i respond to shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation with: return ((interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeLeft) || (interfaceOrientation == UIInterfaceOrientationLandscapeRight)); In my app, everything (almost) functions as expected. The app launches into one of the two landscape modes. The views (and viewcontrollers) display everything where it belongs, taps work all across the screen, as expected. However, there are two clues that something is still wrong. Clue #1: I have two viewcontrollers that are UITabeViewControllers. When summoned, they are supposed to open up their views and scroll to the selected row of the table. However it is evident that they scroll, but they don't scroll down far enough. It seems that they think that the screen extends further down and they scroll just enough to move the row to a place near the bottom of the screen, but that location is not visible. When the views are loaded, the coordinates are: frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {1024, 768}} frame of instrumentSelect {{20, 0}, {1024, 768}} When I present them using a popover, the frames get resized to: frame of keysig {{0, 0}, {320, 655}} frame of instrumentSelect {{0, 0}, {320, 655}} The frame of the viewController that does the presentation, same mainView frame mentioned above is: frame of self {{20, 0}, {748, 1024}} I have also tried to accomplish the same thing with presentModalViewController instead of presentPopover, and have the same results. This is what the popovers look like: In both cases, the selected row is below the horizon, even though the tableView did visibly scroll in order to make the row visible. I am not sure what to try next. I checked each UITable's scrollView content coordinates and they seemed reasonable. It almost seems like a UITable internal rect gets created with the wrong number and stays that way. Clue #2: All my actionsheets come up with a width of 320. I can only assume that the iPad allows actionSheets in only 320 or 480 widths and since it somehow thinks that the screen is oriented in portrait mode, and then uses the narrower width. There you have it. I can't believe I am still getting hung up on orientation issues. I swear Apple doesn't make it easy to have a landscape app. Any ideas?

It occurs in Standards and Quirks mode rendering, it does not occur in Firefox, Chrome or IE8 (though switching the rendering engine via IE8 developer tools will provoke it). There's an unexplained gap between the <div> and the <ul>. Now do one of the following: Uncomment the CSS rule for <h1>. The gap disappears and the list is rendered tight to the <div>, but also very close to the <h1>. Alternatively, uncomment the CSS rule for <ul>. Now a narrow blue border is rendered above the <ul>, but the gap disappears. My questions: How can the <h1> margin (I suppose any block level element with a defined margin will do) affect the space below the list? Can I prevent this from happening without having to set header margins to 0 or messing with the <ul> borders (setting border-width: 0; does not work BTW)? I suppose it is connected to the <ul> having no width because it has only floated children. Maybe someone with more insight into IE7 peculiarities than I have can explain what the rendering engine is doing here. Thanks!

  I've been thinking about storing C++ lambda's lately. The standard advice you see on the Internet is to store the lambda in a std::function object. However, none of this advice ever considers the storage implications. It occurred to me that there must be some seriously black voodoo going on behind the scenes to make this work. We then move the temporary lambda object into memory allocated by std::function. We destroy the temporary lambda. We print our output. We destroy the std::function. And finally, we destroy the test object. Needless to say, this is not what I see. When I compile this on Visual C++ 2010 (release or debug mode), I get this output: Constructing simple! Not only did the compiler fail to use my move constructor, but it generated and destroyed two apparently superfluous copies of the lambda during the assignment. • MVC multi page form losing session

  I have a multi-page form that's used to collect leads. There are multiple versions of the same form that we call campaigns. Some campaigns are 3 page forms, others are 2 pages, some are 1 page. They all share the same lead model and campaign controller, etc. There is 1 action for controlling the flow of the campaigns, and a separate action for submitting all the lead information into the database. I cannot reproduce this locally, and there are checks in place to ensure users can't skip pages. Session mode is InProc. But when these error occurs there is a different visitorID between the Campaign POST and the Submit POST. Because we track each form submission via the TrackLead() method during campaign and submit actions I can see session is being lost between calls, despite the OnActionExecuted firing after every POST and storing the form in session. So when there are errors, we get half the form under one visitorID and the remainder of the form under a different visitorID. Luckily we use a third party service which sends an API call every time a form value changes which uses it's own ID. These IDs are consistent between the first half of the form, and the remainder of the form, and the only way I can save the leads from the lost session issues. I should also note that this works fine 99% of the time. EDIT: I've modified my code to explicitly store my lead object in TempData and used the TempData.Keep() method to persist the object between subsequent requests. I've only deployed this behavior to 1 of my 3 sites but so far so good. I had also tried storing my lead objects in Session directly in the controller action i.e., Session.Add("lead", this._Lead); which uses HTTPSessionStateBase, attempting to circumvent the wrapper class, instead of HttpContext.Current.Session which uses HTTPSessionState. This modification made no difference on the issue, as expected.

• What's the fastest lookup algorithm for a pair data structure (i.e, a map)?

  In the following example a std::map structure is filled with 26 values from A - Z (for key) and 0 – 26 for value. The time taken (on my system) to lookup the last entry (10000000 times) is roughly 250 ms for the vector, and 125 ms for the map. (I compiled using release mode, with O3 option turned on for g++ 4.4) But if for some odd reason I wanted better performance than the std::map, what data structures and functions would I need to consider using? I apologize if the answer seems obvious to you, but I haven't had much experience in the performance critical aspects of C++ programming. UPDATE: This example is rather trivial and hides the true complexity of what I'm trying to achieve. My real world project is a simple scripting language that uses a parser, data tree, and interpreter (instead of a VM stack system). I need to use some kind of data structure (perhaps map) to store the variables names created by script programmers. Pipeline-Stage is post-operational, execution is synchronous. I register for a post image that contains baseamount. • Ajax post not posting email address ?

  UPDATE: It will not work in Firefox, but will work on any other browser. I even tried loading Firefox in safe mode (disabling all plugins, etc.) and still no worky. :( I'm trying to do an AJAX post (on form submission) to a separate PHP file, which works fine without trying to send an email address through the post. • Draw camera position in specific view port.

  Most of this code should be fairly self explanatory. I got an display function and my view port function. There are two modes which is 4 small view ports in the window or one large. I got one camera which can be moved and if in 4 view port mode just 3 fixed angles. The thing is I want the free moving cameras position to be displayed in the 3 other view ports. I tried doing it by drawing spheres using opengl but the problem is that then the position gets draw in the free roaming camera too as it shows the same scene. It doesn't have to be a sphere, just something simple that represents the cameras spacial position in these three other views. Drawing the scene once with camera object showing for the three viewports, render to texture. • Why isn't the inline element inheriting height from its children?

  I'm trying to make a rather complicated grid of images and information (almost like Pinterest). Specifically, I'm trying to inline position one set of <ul>s right after another. I have it working but one aspect is causing issues so I'm trying to ask about this small piece to avoid the complication of the whole problem. In order to horizontally align the images and their information we are using inline <li>s with other inline-block level elements inside of them. Everything works correctly for the most part except that the <li>s have almost no height. I know that changing the <li> to display:inline-block solves this problem but that isn't feasible for other reasons. So first of all, I'm just looking to see if anyone understands why the inline <li> element doesn't have any height. I can't find anything in the spec that explains this. I know I can't add height to an inline element but any explanation as to why this is happening that might enable me to fix would be great. Secondly, if you inspect the elements using IE's Developer Mode you will see that although the background color is in the correct location, the actual location of the <li>'s bounding box is at the bottom of the container according to hovering over the element. I could deal with this problem if it was at the top in every browser but it apparently varies. NOTE: I don't really care about older browsers in this case but I don't use HTML5 or JavaScript positioning. Thanks.

• FineUploader multiple instances and dynamic naming

  I am using FineUploader 4.0.8 within a MVC4 project using the jquery wrapper. Here is an example of my js code that creates a single instance of the fineUploader and is working just fine. At this time, I have the need for more than one instance of fineUploader, but each individual control doesn't know anything about the other and they're rendered as needed on a page (I've seen previous questions using a jQuery .each, which won't work here). Currently, I can't seem to correctly render any upload buttons, probably due to having an ID duplicated or something. See below for how I'm using MVC's Razor to create unique variables and html IDs for that individual instance. • A view interface for large object/array dumps

  I want to embed in a page a detailed structure report of my model objects, like print_r() or var_export() produce (now I’m doing this with running var_export() on get_object_vars()). But what I actually want to see is only some properties (in most cases), but at this moment I have to use Ctrl+F and seek the variable I want, instead of just staring at it right after the page completes loading. So I’m embedding buttons to show/hide large arrays etc. but thought: ‘What if there already is the thing I do right now?’ So is there? Update: What would your ideal interface look like? First of all, dumped models fit in the first screen. All the properties can be seen at the first look at the screen (there are not many of them, around 10 per each, three models total, so it is possible). Small arrays can be shown unrolled too. Let the size of the array to count it as ‘small’ be definable. Ideally, the user can see values of the properties without doing any click, scrolling the screen or typing something. There must be some improvements to representing the values, say, if an array is empty, show array ‘My_big_array’ is empty and if a boolean variable starting with is_, has_, had_ has a false as the value, make the variable (let us take is_available for example) shown as is_NOT_available in red, and if it has true as the value, show is_available in green. Without any value shown. The same goes for defined constants. That would be ideal. I want to make focus on this kind of switches. Krumo seems useful, but since it always closes up the variable without making difference of how large it is, I cannot use it as is, but there might appear something similar on github soon :) Second update starts here: Any programmer who sees is_available = false will know what it means, no need to do more Bringing in color indication I forgot about one thing: the ‘switches’ let’s call them so, may me important or not. So I have right now some of them that will show in green or red, this is for something global, like caching, which is shown as Caching is… ON with ‘ON’ written in green, (and ‘OFF’ in red when disabled) while the words about what it is, i.e. ‘Caching is… ’ are written in black. And some which are not so important, for example I haven’t defined REVEAL_TIES is… not set with ‘not set’ written in gray, while the words describing what it is stay in black. And if it would be set the whole phrase would be in black since there is nothing important: if this small utility for showing some undercover things is working, I will see some messages after it, if it isn’t — site will be working independently of its state. Dividing switches into important ones and not with corresponding color match should improve readability, especially for those users who are not programmers and just enabled debug mode because some guy from bugzilla said do that — for them it would help to understand what is important and what is not.

• Host AngularJS (Html5Mode) in ASP.NET vNext

Also it's cross platform which means I can host ASP.NET on Windows, Linux and OS X.   If you are following my blog you should knew that I'm currently working on a project which uses ASP.NET WebAPI, SignalR and AngularJS. Currently the AngularJS part is hosted by Express in Node.js while WebAPI and SignalR are hosted in ASP.NET. I was looking for a solution to host all of them in one platform so that my SignalR can utilize WebSocket. Currently AngularJS and SignalR are hosted in the same domain but different port so it has to use ServerSendEvent. It can be upgraded to WebSocket if I host both of them in the same port.   Host AngularJS in ASP.NET vNext Static File Middleware ASP.NET vNext utilizes middleware pattern to register feature it uses, which is very similar as Express in Node.js. Since AngularJS is a pure client side framework in theory what I need to do is to use ASP.NET vNext as a static file server. This is very easy as there's a build-in middleware shipped alone with ASP.NET vNext. Finally, use "k web" to start the application which will be a static file server on "app" sub folder in the local 22222 port.   Support AngularJS Html5Mode AngularJS works well in previous demo. But you will note that there is a "#" in the browser address. This is because by default AngularJS adds "#" next to its entry page so ensure all request will be handled by this entry page. For example, in this case my entry page is "index.html", so when I clicked "View 1" in the page the address will be changed to "/#/view1" which means it still tell the web server I'm still looking for "index.html". This works, but makes the address looks ugly. Hence AngularJS introduces a feature called Html5Mode, which will get rid off the annoying "#" from the address bar. But the problem is, if we hit F5 the browser will be turn to blank. This is because in this mode the browser told the web server I want static file named "view1" but there's no file on the server. So underlying our web server, which is built by ASP.NET vNext, responded 404. To fix this problem we need to create our own ASP.NET vNext middleware. What it needs to do is firstly try to respond the static file request with the default StaticFileMiddleware. The code below is just for demo purpose. I just tried to load "index.html" in all cases once the StaticFileMiddleware returned 404. I also demonstrated how to extend ASP.NET vNext, so that it supports AngularJS Html5Mode. • Dual Boot issues with Windows 7 and Ubuntu

  I'm finding myself in a rather unique situation. I've read through just about every resource I can find about this and while things have helped me understand some background, I haven't yet been able to find a solution. So I'm asking here. I originally had just a Windows 7 64-bit OS installation on my desktop. Learning that I couldn't do anything with Apache, PHP and MySql from within a 64-bit system, I did some research and found out that I could use Ubuntu. I've installed the latest version: 11.04. I created a CD to install Ubuntu from and the install went just fine. I installed it side-by-side with Windows 7. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine through the dual-boot option. When I reboot to load Windows though, the Grub2 list shows Windows 7 (loader) and when I select this option the Windows System Recovery loads instead of the actual OS. I haven't made it past there because I didn't know what to do. I just shut the computer down and rebooted into Ubuntu. I've been working for the last hour and a half to try to figure out how to boot into the Windows 7 OS and I haven't got a clue. While I'm somewhat proficient with Windows 7, I'm totally new to Ubuntu, so if you do know what needs to happen, please keep it simple enough that I'll be able to understand.
