• Installing and configuring Zend Framework 2 server-wide [Ubuntu] and test driving ZendSkeletonApplication

  I'm trying to have ZF2 installed for all my subdomains at once (Ubuntu 12.04). ZF2 just launched its first stable version, so I wanted to install it on my development server and finally get my hands dirty with it. I downloaded ZF2 and unzipped the files in /var/ZF2/ (which now contains Zend/[all components]). I then edited /etc/php5/apache2/php.ini and added the path to the ZF2 files: include_path = ".:/var/ZF2" I then downloaded the ZendSkeletonApplication and unzipped it in /var/www/skeleton. I know it is suggested to composer.phar to install ZF2 application, but: I don't want to make a local installation of ZF2... I want to make a server-wide installation be able to use my Zend components on all my domains/subdomains on my development server. Before using any automatic installation process, I'd really like to understand that process by doing it manually at first. Obviously, something goes wrong when I fire ZendSkeletonApplication, and I get the following when hit the following URL: http://www.myDevServer.com/skeleton/public/ Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'RuntimeException' with message 'Unable to load ZF2. In the official doc, in the (very short) installation chapter, I see a reference to adding an include path in PHP. But no example... http://zf2.readthedocs.org/en/latest/ref/installation.html Once you have a copy of Zend Framework available, your application needs to be able to access the framework classes found in the library folder. Though there are several ways to achieve this, your PHP include_path needs to contain the path to Zend Framework’s library. I'm pretty sure this PEBKAC problem might be obvious for those who already got in ZF2 previous betas. Thanks for helping my out. EDIT: Problem was resolved, thanks to Daniel M. Just setting up ZF2_PATH in httpd.conf was all that was needed. SetEnv ZF2_PATH /var/ZF2 I also removed the include_path reference in php.ini and everything works just fine. So I have no idea why Zend suggested to include it there in their official docs.

• Group traffic shaping with traffic control?

  I'm trying to limit the output bandwidth generated by an application with linux tc. This application sends me the source port of the request that I use has a filter to limit each user at a given downloadspeed. I feel that my setup could be managed way better if I had a better knowledge of linux tc. At the application level users are categorized as members of a group, each group have a limited bandwidth. Example : Members of group A : 512kbit/s Members of group B : 1Mbit/s Members of group C : 2Mbit/s When a user connects to the application, it retrieves the source port to the origin of the request from the user and sends me the source port and the bandwidth at which the user must be limited depending on group to which it belongs. With these informations I must add the appropriate rules so that the user (the source port in reality) is limited to the right bandwidth. If the user that connect isn't a member of any group it should be limited at a default bandwidth speed. I'm actually managing this by using a self made daemon that add or remove rules from when it receive a request from the application. With my little knowledge of tc I'm not able to limit other users (ones that aren't in a group, all others in fact) at a default speed and my configuration seems awful to me. I would like to know how to manage the fact that for all other users (request/source port, whatever you name it) could be limited at a given speed each. I mean that each connection should be able to use at max 100kbit/s for example, not a shared 100kbit/s. I also would like to know if there is a way to simplify my rules. I don't know if it is possible to use only one class per group and associate multiple filters to the same class so each users could be handled by one class and not one class per user. • OEM sound card with no drivers or support

  I thought my sound card was going out so I bought a sound card online. Everything seemed to work ok, I do have sound. But after a few months, I noticed the extra software that downloaded with the sound card drivers didn't work. I ended up contacting creative and after a month of e-mail support, they asked for the serial number and/or model number. Their reply back was I had purchased an OEM sound card and they could not provide support for that, and informed me that that is why their drivers and software didn't work. They informed me that I had to contact the company that distributed the sound card and install their software. Is there anything I can do to find out who distributed this sound card, or is there anything I can do to get other features to work? I have 4 speakers and a sub but only 2 speakers produce sound. The only control I have is the volume. Creative's driver update program will find my sound card, download updates and even added software, but if I try to click on a downloaded program like Creative's Toolbox or Media Center, I get an error that it cannot find the devise. That is why I contacted creative in the first place. EDIT Thanks for the responses everyone. Here's an update. I thought I'd go thru my old computer stuff for my classes at school. I have a lot of old stuff saved, boxes and cables and stuff. I found the box the sound card came in. It looks like a box you'd buy at the store, like Best Buy or CompUSA. I worked with creative for such a long time, it went past the point of being able to return it to the junk online store this shipped from. The box did have an install CD, so I thought I'd start over to reinstall the drivers and software that shipped with the card. I noticed that the install would uninstall a program, then reinstall it. so I thought things were working out. But no good. Everything still works but the programs were still bad. I'd get an error trying to load them - not found. I'll look on the card the next time I get a chance and see if I can spot any kind of name on it.

  I know there's a lot of questions on SO similar to this, but I couldn't find one for this particular issue. A couple of points, first: I have no control over our Sharepoint server. I cannot tweak any IIS settings. I believe our IIS server version is IIS 7.0. Our Sharepoint Server is anticipating requests via NTLM. Our Sharepoint Server is on the same domain as my client computer. I am using .NET Framework 3.5, Visual Studio 2008 I am trying to write a simple console app to manipulate Sharepoint data using Sharepoint Web Services. I've tried the following steps: Using a native Win32 Impersonator before creating the client using (new Impersonator.Impersonator("username", "password", "domain")) using (var client = new ListsSoapClient()) { client.ClientCredentials.Windows.ClientCredential = new NetworkCredential("dpincas", "password", "domain"); client.GetListCollection(); } This produced the same error message. Setting TokenImpersonationLevel for my client credentials using (var client = new ListsSoapClient()) { client.ClientCredentials.Windows.AllowedImpersonationLevel = TokenImpersonationLevel.Impersonation; client.GetListCollection(); } This produced the same error message. Using security mode=TransportCredentialOnly <security mode="TransportCredentialOnly"> <transport clientCredentialType="Ntlm" /> </security> This resulted in a different error message: The provided URI scheme 'https' is invalid; expected 'http'. Parameter name: via However, I need to use https, so I cannot change my URI scheme. I've tried some other combinations that I can't remember, but I'll post them when I do. I'm really at wits end here. I see a lot of links on Google that say "switch to Kerberos", but my server seems to only be accepting NTLM, not "Negotiate" (as it would say if it was looking for Kerberos), so that is unfortunately not an option. Any help out there, folks?

• Android RatingBar weirdness: Whenever I add a RatingBar to my layout, a bunch of the generated tags,

  Whenever I use a RatingBar view in my layout, I suddenly get all kinds of compile errors. I'm using Android 2.0, but I've also tried 2.0.1, and 2.1, without joy. I also get a message: Shader 'android.graphics.BitmapShader' is not supported in Layout Editor, and an odd warning which may or maynot be related: warning: Ignoring InnerClasses attribute for an anonymous inner class that doesn't come with an associated EnclosingMethod attribute. I've tried using the RatingBar both within a tablelayout and outside it, but it behaves the same way. This is very puzzling and frustrating. Please help if you can. • HTTP Bad Request error when requesting a WCF service contract

• Get information about AutocompleteTextView from resulting AutoCompleteTextView$DropDownListView

  I'm using 3 AutocompleteTextViews to suggest entries from a database. I subclassed AutocompleteTextView to handle setting the default text to null when clicked and setting back to the default instructions if moved away and nothing is entered. I was using a SimpleCursorAdapter to bind to the view, but I discovered that there was no way I could get the id of the AutocompleteTextView from an OnItemClickListener, which I needed to put additional information from the selected row in a variable depending on which AutocompleteTextView it was from. All I could access was the AutoCompleteTextView$DropDownListView, which is an undocumented inner class that appears to offer no real functionality. Neither was there a way to go up the view hierarchy to get the original AutocompleteTextView. So I subclassed SimpleCursorAdapter and added an int to the constructor to identify which AutocompleteTextView the adapter was from, and I was able to access this from the view passed into OnItemClick(). So, although my solution works fine, I wonder if it is possible to get the id of an AutocompleteTextView from its DropDownListView? I am also using another database query which gets the id from the OnItemClick and then looks up the data for that item, because I couldn't find a way of converting more than one column to a string. Should I be using CursorAdapter for this, to save initiating another query? Oh, and another thing, do I need a database cursor initially (all_cursor) when all I'm doing is filtering on it to get a new cursor? Seems like overkill. • Dynamic gridview columns event problem

  Hi, i have a GridView (selectable) in which I want to generate a dynamic GridView in a new row BELOW the selected row. I can add the row and gridview dynamically in the Gridview1 PreRender event. I need to use this event because: _OnDataBound is not called on every postback (same for _OnRowDataBound) _OnInit is not possible because the 'Inner table' for the Gridview is added after Init _OnLoad is not possible because the 'selected' row is not selected yet. I can add the columns to the dynamic GridView based on my ITemplate class. But now the button events won't fire.... Any suggestions?   Hello, I'm trying to write a not so smart factorization program and trying to do it in parallel using TPL. However, after about 15 minutes of running on a core 2 duo machine, I am getting an aggregate exception with an overflow exception inside it. All the entries in the stack trace are part of the .NET framework, the overflow does not come from my code. Any help would be appreciated in figuring out why this happens. The question is - how to write an algorithm like this that'll cope with any number of sets of strings? Linq, non-Linq; I'm not fussed. Why am I doing this? Indeed, why!? In Asp.Net MVC - I want to have partial views that can be redefined for a given combination of back-end/front-end culture and language. The most basic of these would be, for a given base view View, we could have View-en-GB, View-en, View-GB, and View, in that order of precedence (recognising of course that the language/culture codes could be the same, so some combinations might be the same - a Distinct() will solve that). But I also have other views that, in themselves, have other possible combinations before culture is even taken into account (too long to go into - but the fact is, this algo will enable a whole bunch of really cool that I want to offer my developers!). I want to produce a search list of all the acceptable view names, iterate through the whole lot until the most specific match is found (governed by the order that this algo will produce these concatenations in) then serve up the resolved Partial View. The result of the search can later be cached to avoid the expense of running the algorithm all the time. I already have a really basic version of this working that just has one enumerable of strings. But this is a whole different kettle of seafood! Any help greatly appreciated.

Setting a breakpoint on my java code, I can see that it is not hit when I run the silverlight client, so it is probably a cross domain issue, but I'm not sure how to handle it (I've already created a crossdomain.xml file and put it beside my HTML page hosting the silverlight client). The BulkDataExchange probably takes the XML payload, breaks it up, and send the pieces out to the Merchant or Trading API. The inner pieces of the payload then do not have the namespace and the get the error. This is a guess on my part but I wouldn't be surprised if this is what was going on behind the scenes. • Linq to SQL NullReferenceException's: A random needle in a haystack!

  I'm getting NullReferenceExeceptions at seemly random times in my application and can't track down what could be causing the error. I'll do my best to describe the scenario and setup. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated! C# .net 3.5 Forms Application, but I use the WebFormRouting library built by Phil Haack (http://haacked.com/archive/2008/03/11/using-routing-with-webforms.aspx) to leverage the Routing libraries of .net (usually used in conjunction with MVC) - intead of using url rewriting for my urls. My database has 60 tables. All Normalized. It's just a massive application. (SQL server 2008) All queries are built with Linq to SQL in code (no SP's). Each time a new instance of my data context is created. I use only one data context with all relationships defined in 4 relationship diagrams in SQL Server. the data context gets created a lot. I let the closing of the data context be handled automatically. I've heard arguments both sides about whether you should leave to be closed automatically or do it yourself. In this case I do it myself. It doesnt seem to matter if I'm creating a lot of instances of the data context or just one. I've been working on a complex "user feed" type of functionality for a while now, and after experimenting with various union plugins, hacking named scopes, and brute force, have arrived at a solution I'm happy with. S.O. has been hugely helpful for me, so I thought I'd post it here in hopes that it might help others and also to get feedback -- it's very possible that I worked on this so long that I walked down an unnecessarily complicated road. For the sake of my example, I'll use users, groups, and articles. A user can follow other users to get a feed of their articles. They can also join groups and get a feed of articles that have been added to those groups. What I needed was a combined, pageable feed of distinct articles from a user's contacts and groups. Let's begin. user.rb has_many :articles has_many :contacts has_many :contacted_users, :through => :contacts has_many :memberships has_many :groups, :through => :memberships contact.rb belongs_to :user belongs_to :contacted_user, :class_name => "User", :foreign_key => "contacted_user_id" article.rb belongs_to :user has_many :submissions has_many :groups, :through => :submissions group.rb has_many :memberships has_many :users, :through => :memberships has_many :submissions has_many :articles, :through => :submissions Those are the basic models that define my relationships. Now, I add two named scopes to the Article model so that I can get separate feeds of both contact articles and group articles should I desire. article.rb # Get all articles by user's contacts named_scope :by_contacts, lambda {|user| {:joins => "inner join contacts on articles.user_id = contacts.contacted_user_id", :conditions => ["articles.published = 1 and contacts.user_id = ?", user.id]} } # Get all articles in user's groups. Since I'm using Rails 2.3.5, I have to use the construct_finder_sql method to render a scope into its base sql.   I am using twitter bootstrap on my web app to do all of the styling and everything is great for the most part. The problem is that my nav bar, once collapsed, will not drop down when I click the dropdown icon. • Array Problem, need to sort via Keys

  Ok, not really sure how to do this. I have values that are being outputted from a SQL query like so: $row[0] = array('lid' => 1, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 1, 'mid' => 1, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); $row[1] = array('lid' => 2, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 0, 'mid' => 2, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); $row[2] = array('lid' => 2, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 0, 'mid' => 3, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 1); $row[3] = array('lid' => 3, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 1, 'mid' => 4, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 1); $row[4] = array('lid' => 4, 'llayout' => 1, 'lposition' => 2, 'mid' => 5, 'mlayout' => 1, 'mposition' => 0); etc. etc. Ok, so the best thing I can think of for this is to give lid and mid array keys and have it equal the mposition into an array within the while loop of query like so... $old[$row['lid']][$row['mid']] = $mposition; Now if I do this, I need to compare this array's keys with another array that I'll need to build based on a $_POST array[]. $new = array(); foreach($_POST as $id => $data) { // $id = column, but we still need to get each rows position... $id = str_replace('col_', '', $id); // now get the inner array... foreach($data as $pos => $idpos) $new[$id][$idpos] = $pos; } Ok, so now I have 2 arrays of info, 1 from the database, and another from the $_POST positions, I hope I got the array keys correct. Now I need to figure out which one's changed, comparing from the old to the new. And also, need to update the database with all of the new positions where new lid = the old lid, and the new mid = the old mid from each array. I'm sure I'll have to use array_key or array_key_intersect somehow, but not sure exactly how...??? Also, I don't think an UPDATE would be useful in a foreach loop, perhaps there's a way to do a CASE statement in the UPDATE query? Also, Am I going about this the right way? OR should I do it another way instead of using a muli-dimensional array for this.

• Writing more efficient xquery code (avoiding redundant iteration)

  Here's a simplified version of a problem I'm working on: I have a bunch of xml data that encodes information about people. Each person is uniquely identified by an 'id' attribute, but they may go by many names. For example, in one document, I might find <person id=1>Paul Mcartney</person> <person id=2>Ringo Starr</person> And in another I might find: <person id=1>Sir Paul McCartney</person> <person id=2>Richard Starkey</person> I want to use xquery to produce a new document that lists every name associated with a given id. i.e.: <person id=1> <name>Paul McCartney</name> <name>Sir Paul McCartney</name> <name>James Paul McCartney</name> </person> <person id=2> ... </person> The way I'm doing this now in xquery is something like this (pseudocode-esque): let $ids := distinct-terms( [all the id attributes on people] ) for $id in $ids return <person id={$id}> { for $unique-name in distinct-values ( for $name in ( [all names] ) where $name/@id=$id return $name ) return <name>{$unique-name}</name> } </person> The problem is that this is really slow. I imagine the bottleneck is the innermost loop, which executes once for every id (of which there are about 1200). I'm dealing with a fair bit of data (300 MB, spread over about 800 xml files), so even a single execution of the query in the inner loop takes about 12 seconds, which means that repeating it 1200 times will take about 4 hours (which might be optimistic - the process has been running for 3 hours so far). Not only is it slow, it's using a whole lot of virtual memory. I'm using Saxon, and I had to set java's maximum heap size to 10 GB (!) to avoid getting out of memory errors, and it's currently using 6 GB of physical memory. So here's how I'd really like to do this (in Pythonic pseudocode): persons = {} for id in ids: person[id] = set() for person in all_the_people_in_my_xml_document: persons[person.id].add(person.name) There, I just did it in linear time, with only one sweep of the xml document. Now, is there some way to do something similar in xquery? Surely if I can imagine it, a reasonable programming language should be able to do it (he said quixotically). The problem, I suppose, is that unlike Python, xquery doesn't (as far as I know) have anything like an associative array. Is there some clever way around this? Failing that, is there something better than xquery that I might use to accomplish my goal? Because really, the computational resources I'm throwing at this relatively simple problem are kind of ridiculous.

• Serial port : Read data problem, not reading complete data

  Hi I have an application where I am sending data via serial port from PC1 (Java App) and reading that data in PC2 (C++ App). The problem that I am facing is that my PC2 (C++ App) is not able to read complete data sent by PC1 i.e. from my PC1 I am sending 190 bytes but PC2 is able to read close to 140 bytes though I am trying to read in a loop. • Rx IObservable buffering to smooth out bursts of events

  I have an Observable sequence that produces events in rapid bursts (ie: five events one right after another, then a long delay, then another quick burst of events, etc.). I want to smooth out these bursts by inserting a short delay between events. Imagine the following diagram as an example: Raw: --oooo--------------ooooo-----oo----------------ooo| Buffered: --o--o--o--o--------o--o--o--o--o--o--o---------o--o--o| My current approach is to generate a metronome-like timer via Observable.Interval() that signals when it's ok to pull another event from the raw stream. The problem is that I can't figure out how to then combine that timer with my raw unbuffered observable sequence. IObservable.Zip() is close to doing what I want, but it only works so long as the raw stream is producing events faster than the timer. As soon as there is a significant lull in the raw stream, the timer builds up a series of unwanted events that then immediately pair up with the next burst of events from the raw stream. Ideally, I want an IObservable extension method with the following function signature that produces the bevaior I've outlined above. Now, come to my rescue StackOverflow :) public static IObservable<T> Buffered(this IObservable<T> src, TimeSpan minDelay) PS. I'm brand new to Rx, so my apologies if this is a trivially simple question... 1. Simple yet flawed approach Here's my initial naive and simplistic solution that has quite a few problems: public static IObservable<T> Buffered<T>(this IObservable<T> source, TimeSpan minDelay) { Queue<T> q = new Queue<T>(); source.Subscribe(x => q.Enqueue(x)); return Observable.Interval(minDelay).Where(_ => q.Count > 0).Select(_ => q.Dequeue()); } The first obvious problem with this is that the IDisposable returned by the inner subscription to the raw source is lost and therefore the subscription can't be terminated. Calling Dispose on the IDisposable returned by this method kills the timer, but not the underlying raw event feed that is now needlessly filling the queue with nobody left to pull events from the queue. The second problem is that there's no way for exceptions or end-of-stream notifications to be propogated through from the raw event stream to the buffered stream - they are simply ignored when subscribing to the raw source. And last but not least, now I've got code that wakes up periodically regardless of whether there is actually any work to do, which I'd prefer to avoid in this wonderful new reactive world. 2. Way overly complex appoach To solve the problems encountered in my initial simplistic approach, I wrote a much more complicated function that behaves much like IObservable.Delay() (I used .NET Reflector to read that code and used it as the basis of my function). Unfortunately, a lot of the boilerplate logic such as AnonymousObservable is not publicly accessible outside the system.reactive code, so I had to copy and paste a lot of code. This solution appears to work, but given its complexity, I'm less confident that its bug free. I just can't believe that there isn't a way to accomplish this using some combination of the standard Reactive extensions. I hate feeling like I'm needlessly reinventing the wheel, and the pattern I'm trying to build seems like a fairly standard one.

• Is this a right way to use NHibernate?

  I spent the rest of the evening reading StackOverflow questions and also some blog entries and links about the subject. All of them turned out to be very helpful, but I still feel that they don't really answer my question. So, I'm developing a simple web application. I'd like to create a reusable data access layer which I can later reuse in other solutions. 99% of these will be web applications. This seems to be a good excuse for me to learn NHibernate and some of the patterns around it. My goals are the following: I don't want the business logic layer to know ANYTHING about the inner workings of the database, nor NHibernate itself. I want the business logic layer to have the least possible number of assumptions about the data access layer. I want the data access layer as simplistic and easy-to-use as possible. This is going to be a simple project, so I don't want to overcomplicate anything. I want the data access layer to be as non-intrusive as possible. Will all this in mind, I decided to use the popular repository pattern. I read about this subject on this site and on various dev blogs, and I heard some stuff about the unit of work pattern. I also looked around and checked out various implementations. (Including FubuMVC contrib, and SharpArchitecture, and stuff on some blogs.) I found out that most of these operate with the same principle: They create a "unit of work" which is instantiated when a repository is instantiated, they start a transaction, do stuff, and commit, and then start all over again. So, only one ISession per Repository and that's it. Then the client code needs to instantiate a repository, do stuff with it, and then dispose. This usage pattern doesn't meet my need of being as simplistic as possible, so I began thinking about something else. I found out that NHibernate already has something which makes custom "unit of work" implementations unnecessary, and that is the CurrentSessionContext class. If I configure the session context correctly, and do the clean up when necessary, I'm good to go. So, I came up with this: I have a static class called NHibernateHelper. Firstly, it has a static property called CurrentSessionFactory, which upon first call, instantiates a session factory and stores it in a static field. (One ISessionFactory per one AppDomain is good enough.) Then, more importantly, it has a CurrentSession static property, which checks if there is an ISession bound to the current session context, and if not, creates one, and binds it, and it returns with the ISession bound to the current session context. Because it will be used mostly with WebSessionContext (so, one ISession per HttpRequest, although for the unit tests, I configured ThreadStaticSessionContext), it should work seamlessly. And after creating and binding an ISession, it hooks an event handler to the HttpContext.Current.ApplicationInstance.EndRequest event, which takes care of cleaning up the ISession after the request ends. (Of course, it only does this if it is really running in a web environment.) So, with all this set up, the NHibernateHelper will always be able to return a valid ISession, so there is no need to instantiate a Repository instance for the "unit of work" to operate properly. Instead, the Repository is a static class which operates with the ISession from the NHibernateHelper.CurrentSession property, and exposes some functionality through that. I'm curious, what do you think about this? Is it a valid way of thinking, or am I completely off track here?

• How to Force an Exception from a Task to be Observed in a Continuation Task?

  I have a task to perform an HttpWebRequest using Task<WebResponse>.Factory.FromAsync(req.BeginGetRespone, req.EndGetResponse) which can obviously fail with a WebException. To the caller I want to return a Task<HttpResult> where HttpResult is a helper type to encapsulate the response (or not). In this case a 4xx or 5xx response is not an exception. Therefore I've attached two continuations to the request task. One with TaskContinuationOptions OnlyOnRanToCompletion and the other with OnlyOnOnFaulted. And then wrapped the whole thing in a Task<HttpResult> to pick up the one result whichever continuation completes. Each of the three child tasks (request plus two continuations) is created with the AttachedToParent option. But when the caller waits on the returned outer task, an AggregateException is thrown is the request failed. I want to, in the on faulted continuation, observe the WebException so the client code can just look at the result. Adding a Wait in the on fault continuation throws, but a try-catch around this doesn't help. Nor does looking at the Exception property (as section "Observing Exceptions By Using the Task.Exception Property" hints here). I could install a UnobservedTaskException event handler to filter, but as the event offers no direct link to the faulted task this will likely interact outside this part of the application and is a case of a sledgehammer to crack a nut. Given an instance of a faulted Task<T> is there any means of flagging it as "fault handled"?
