  I'm having problems with my ASP.NET web forms system. It worked on our test server but now we are putting it live one of the servers is within a DMZ and the SQL server is outside of that (on our network still though - although a different subnet) I have open up the firewall completely between these two boxes to see if that was the issue and it still gives the error message "Communication with the underlying transaction manager has failed" whenever we try and use the "TransactionScope". We can access the data for retrieval it's just transactions that break it. We have also used msdtc ping to test the connection and with the amendments on the firewall that pings successfully, but the same error occurs! How do i resolve this error? Any help would be great as we have a system to go live today. Panic :) Edit: I have created a more straightforward test page with a transaction as below and this works fine. Could a nested transaction cause this kind of error and if so why would this only cause an issue when using a live box in a dmz with a firewall? • How to fix a NHibernate lazy loading error "no session or session was closed"?

  I'm developing a website with ASP.NET MVC, NHibernate and Fluent Hibernate and getting the error "no session or session was closed" when I try to access a child object.   I've just finished my first ASP.NET MVC (2) CMS. Next step is to build website that will show data from CMS's database. This is website design: #1 (Red box) - displays article categories. ViewModel: public class CategoriesDisplay { public CategoriesDisplay() { } public int CategoryID { set; get; } public string CategoryTitle { set; get; } } #2 (Brown box) - displays last x articles; skips those from green box #3. Viewmodel: public class ArticleDisplay { public ArticleDisplay() { } public int CategoryID { set; get; } public string CategoryTitle { set; get; } public int ArticleID { set; get; } public string ArticleTitle { set; get; } public string URLArticleTitle { set; get; } public DateTime ArticleDate; public string ArticleContent { set; get; } } #3 (green box) - Displays last x articles. Uses the same ViewModel as brown box #2 #4 (blue box) - Displays list of upcoming events. Uses dataContext.Model.Event as ViewModel Boxes #1, #2 and #4 will repeat all over the site and they are part of Master Page. So, my question is: what is the best way to transfer this data from Model to Controller and finally to View pages? Should I make a controller for master page and ViewModel class that will wrap all this classes together OR Should I create partial Views for every of these boxes and make each of them inherit appropriate class (if it is even possible that it works this way?) OR Should I put this repeated code in all controllers and all additional data transfer via ViewData, which would be probably the worse way :) OR There is maybe a better and more simple way but I don't know/see it? Thanks in advance, Ile EDIT: If your answer is #1, then please explain how to make a controller for master page! EDIT 2: In this tutorial is described how to pass data to master page using abstract class: http://www.asp.net/LEARN/mvc/tutorial-13-cs.aspx In "Listing 5 – Controllers\MoviesController.cs", data is retrieved directly from database using LINQ, not from repository. So, I wonder if this is just in this tutorial, or there is some trick here and repository can't/shouldn't be used?

• ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider and ADAM (or AD LDS) and SetPassword

  By the subject line it seems to be a rather broad subject and I need some help here. Basically what I want is to use ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider with an ADAM instance to authenticate users in an ASP.NET web application. My development environment is a windows 7 machine with an AD LDS instance on it whilst the QA server is a Windows 2003 server with an ADAM instance on it. I have all the required users on both instances plus one with adminsitrator role (CN=Admin,CN=xxx,DC=xxx,C=xx) which I want to use as the connection user. Using connectonProtecton="None" connectionUsername="CN=Admin,CN=xxx,DC=xxx,C=xx" connectionPassword="xxx" I am able to authenticate on both environments (dev & qa). If I change to the connectionProtection to "Secure" I am not able to authenticate anymore; the error I get is "Parser Error Message: Unable to establish secure connection with the server" To me it sounds wrong to use connectionProtection="None" although I found on the net a lot of samples using this setting. Can I use connectionProtection="Secure" to connect to an ADAM instance using an account defined on that instance having Administrator role? What other choices do I have (like using an domain account)? What if my machine where I am to deploy the application is not a part of the domain, will this affect in any way the behavior? I am novice in the respect so I would really appreciate some clear answers or some directions as where to look? Now beside the "signing in" feature of the ActiveDirectoryMembershipProvider I also want to add an extra one, which is setting the password without knowing the old one (something that will be used by a "reset password" feature). So I added a couple of extension methods to the provider, and used System.DirectoryServices classes like DirectoryEntry and the like. When creating a directory entry I use the same credentials provided in web.config for the provider minus the AuthenticationType as I don't know what is right combination of the flags that corresponds to None/Secure. I am able to use Invoke "SetPassword" with ADS_OPTION_PASSWORD_METHOD option as ADS_PASSWORD_ENCODE_CLEAR on my dev machine (w/ AD LDS instance); nevertheless on qa environment (w/ ADAM instance) I am getting an error like "Exception Details: System.DirectoryServices.DirectoryServicesCOMException: An operations error occurred. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80072020)" I am quite sure it is not about AD LDS vs ADAM but probably another configuration / permission issue. So can anyone help me with some hints on how to use this SetPassword feature? And as a general question what are the best practices when it comes to using ADAM regarding security, programming etc? • How to send messages between c++ .dll and C# app using named pipe?

  I'm making an injected .dll written in C++, and I want to communicate with a C# app using named pipes. Now, I am using the built in System.IO.Pipe .net classes in the C# app, and I'm using the regular functions in C++. I don't have much experience in C++ (Read: This is my first C++ code..), tho I'm experienced in C#. It seems that the connection with the server and the client is working, the only problem is the messaged aren't being send. I tried making the .dll the server, the C# app the server, making the pipe direction InOut (duplex) but none seems to work. • How can I make a WPF TreeView data binding lazy and asynchronous?

  I am learning how to use data binding in WPF for a TreeView. I am procedurally creating the Binding object, setting Source, Path, and Converter properties to point to my own classes. I can even go as far as setting IsAsync and I can see the GUI update asynchronously when I explore the tree. So far so good! My problem is that WPF eagerly evaluates parts of the tree prior to them being expanded in the GUI. If left long enough this would result in the entire tree being evaluated (well actually in this example my tree is infinite, but you get the idea). I would like the tree only be evaluated on demand as the user expands the nodes. Is this possible using the existing asynchronous data binding stuff in the WPF? As an aside I have not figured out how ObjectDataProvider relates to this task. • ASP.NET MVC2: Getting textbox data from a view to a controller

  Hi, I'm having difficulty getting data from a textbox into a Controller. I've read about a few ways to accomplish this in Sanderson's book, Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework, but haven't had any success. Also, I've ran across a few similiar questions online, but haven't had any success there either. Seems like I'm missing something rather fundamental. Currently, I'm trying to use the action method parameters approach. Can someone point out where I'm going wrong or provide a simple example? Thanks in advance! I plan on doing this in the List method (which is already functional), however, I'm using the SearchResults method for debugging.   Been trying to update to the new FB php sdk v4 for pulling events into my website, but having trouble finding how to do it. I want to pull public event information from a FB "page" using their fan page ID number. For example, a venue that has multiple events. What are the minimal classes I need to "require_once" and "use" to only pull the events (don't need to login)? The site is on Wordpress which doesn't use sessions, so what do I do with the "session_start()" statement? Will it work anyway? Could I get a basic code example of how to get the event info into an array? • Can Spring.Net function as PostSharp?

  A few months back I've discovered PostSharp, and for a time, it was good. But then legal came back with an answer saying that they don't like the licence of the old versions. Then the department told me that 2.0's price was unacceptably high (for the number of seats we need)... I was extremely disapponted, but not disheartened. Can't be the only such framework, I thought. I kept looking for a replacement, but most of it was either dead, ill maintained (especially in documentation department), for academic use, or all of the above (I'm looking at you Aspect.Net) Then I've discovered Spring.Net, and for a time, it was good. I've been reading the documentation and it went on to paint what seemed to be a supperior picture of an AOP nirvana. No longer was I locked to attributes to mark where I wanted code interception to take place, but it could be configured in XML and changes to it didn't require re-compile. Great. Then I looked at the samples and saw the following, in every single usage scenario: // Create AOP proxy using Spring.NET IoC container. IApplicationContext ctx = ContextRegistry.GetContext(); ICommand command = (ICommand)ctx["myServiceCommand"]; command.Execute(); if (command.IsUndoCapable) { command.UnExecute(); } Why must the first two lines of code exist? It ruins everything. This means I cannot simply provide a user with a set of aspects and attributes or XML configs that they can use by sticking appropriate attributes on the appropriate methods/classes/etc or editing the match pattern in XML. They have to modify their program logic to make this work! Is there a way to make Spring.Net behave as PostSharp in this case? (i.e. user only needs to add attributes/XML config, not edit content of any methods. Alternatively, is there a worthy and functioning alternative to PostSharp? I've seen a few question titled like this on SO, but none of them were actually looking to replace PostSharp, they only wanted to supplement its functionality. I need full replacement.

My feeling is that it is very hard to get a feel for how all the CSS will work together and indeed what CSS is affecting parent and sibling elements in the HTML. So, my question is "what are the best-practices around re-skinning an existing web-site by replacing the CSS only and not modifying the existing HTML?" I can't change the classes, ids, node hierarchy, etc. An example of the particular site that I am trying to re-skin is http://demo.nopcommerce.com/. The datatable is created using Hibernate and is a join table between two classes mapping a many to many relationship. • How can I define a clojure type that implements the servlet interface?

  I'm attempting to use deftype (from the bleeding-edge clojure 1.2 branch) to create a java class that implements the java Servlet interface. I would expect the code below to compile (even though it's not very useful). (ns foo [:import [javax.servlet Servlet ServletRequest ServletResponse]]) (deftype servlet [] javax.servlet.Servlet (service [this #^javax.servlet.ServletRequest request #^javax.servlet.ServletResponse response] nil)) But it doesn't compile. So the fact that the return type of the method is void shouldn't be a problem. • NHibernate, could not load an entity when column exists in the database.

  This is probably a simple question to answer but I just can't figure it out. I have a "Company" class with a many-to-one to "Address" which has a many to one to a composite id in "City".   I seem to be having an issue with Jax-WS and Jax-b playing nicely together. I need to consume a web-service, which has a predefined WSDL. When executing the generated client I am receiving the following error: javax.xml.ws.WebServiceException: javax.xml.bind.MarshalException - with linked exception: [com.sun.istack.SAXException2: unable to marshal type "java.lang.String" as an element because it is missing an @XmlRootElement annotation] This started occurring when I used an external custom binding file to map needlessly complex types to java.lang.string. Finally, one other thing I tried was setting a globalBinding definition: <globalBindings generateValueClass="false"></globalBindings> This caused the server to through an argument mismatch exception since the Soap Message was using xs:string xml types instead of passing the defined complex types, so I abandoned that idea. Any insight into what is causing the MarshalException or how to go about solving the issue of calling the webservice and mapping these objects more easily, is greatly appreciated. I've been searching for days and I sadly think I am stumped.

• Cannot use WCF service from windows mobile 5: no endpoint found.

  Hi All, I'm trying to figure out how to call a WCF service from a windows smart phone. I have a very simple smartphone console app, which does nothing but launch and make 1 call to the service. The service simply returns a string. I am able to instantiate the proxy class but when i call the method it throws an exception: There was no endpoint listening at http://mypcname/Service1.svc/basic that could accept the message. This is often caused by an incorrect address or SOAP action. See InnerException, if present, for more details. The inner exception: Could not establish connection to network. I've tried to follow this tutorial on setting up services with windows mobile. I've used the NetCFSvcUtil to create the proxy classes. I have the service running on IIS on my machine and had the Util consume the wsdl from that location. I've created a basic http binding as suggested in the article and i think i've pointed the proxy at the correct uri. Here some sections of relevant code in case it's helpful to see. If anyone has any suggestions, i'd really appreciate it. I'm not sure what else i can poke at to get this thing to work. Thanks! • RuntimeBinderException with dynamic in C# 4.0

  I have an interface: public abstract class Authorizer<T> where T : RequiresAuthorization { public AuthorizationStatus Authorize(T record) { // Perform authorization specific stuff // and then hand off to an abstract method to handle T-specific stuff // that should happen when authorization is successful } } Then, I have a bunch of different classes which all implement RequiresAuthorization, and correspondingly, an Authorizer<T> for each of them (each business object in my domain requires different logic to execute once the record has been authorized). I'm also using a UnityContainer, in which I register various Authorizer<T>'s. I then have some code as follows to find the right record out of the database and authorize it: void Authorize(RequiresAuthorization item) { var dbItem = ChildContainer.Resolve<IAuthorizationRepository>() .RetrieveRequiresAuthorizationById(item.Id); var authorizerType = type.GetType(String.Format("Foo.Authorizer`1[[{0}]], Foo", dbItem.GetType().AssemblyQualifiedName)); dynamic authorizer = ChildContainer.Resolve(type) as dynamic; authorizer.Authorize(dbItem); } Basically, I'm using the Id on the object to retrieve it out of the database. In the background NHibernate takes care of figuring out what type of RequiresAuthorization it is. I then want to find the right Authorizer for it (I don't know at compile time what implementation of Authorizer<T> I need, so I've got a little bit of reflection to get the fully qualified type). To accomplish this, I use the non-generic overload of UnityContainer's Resolve method to look up the correct authorizer from configuration. Finally, I want to call Authorize on the authorizer, passing through the object I've gotten back from NHibernate. Now, for the problem: In Beta2 of VS2010 the above code works perfectly. On RC and RTM, as soon as I make the Authorize() call, I get a RuntimeBinderException saying "The best overloaded method match for 'Foo.Authorizer<Bar>.Authorize(Bar)' has some invalid arguments". When I inspect the authorizer in the debugger, it's the correct type. When I call GetType().GetMethods() on it, I can see the Authorize method which takes a Bar. If I do GetType() on dbItem it is a Bar. Because this worked in Beta2 and not in RC, I assumed it was a regression (it seems like it should work) and I delayed sorting it out until after I'd had a chance to test it on the RTM version of C# 4.0. However, I'm developing a C# app on Windows XP (64bit), and I can get to those WMI classes just fine. Users of my app will be on Windows XP sp2 with .Net 3.5 sp1. Googling around, I can't determine whether I can count on this or not. Am I successful on my system because of one or more of the following: - windows xp service pack 2? - visual studio 2008 sp1 was installed? - .Net 3.5 sp1? Should I use something other than WMI to get at the volume/mountpoint info? • DLL Config in Mono

  Hi, I'm trying to pick up Svn.NET (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/) library for use in my Mono project. I tried compiling its mockapp - svnmockapp project (http://www.pumacode.org/projects/svndotnet/browser/trunk/SvnMockApp) , I am able to get the references right and get it compiled right. I understand that it references 2 other modules libapr (libapr-1.so.0) and svn_client (libsvn_client-1.so.0) , by which I've created PumaCode.SvnDotNet.dll.config in /bin/Debug . That is all I've done to tried to try to get the mockapp at least outputting something to show that it is indeed interfacing SVN. Nevertheless, it is not working. Commands that are entered that doesn't interface SVN works fine: $ mono SvnTest.exe -usage Usage: SvnTest <subcommand> [options] Short Options: ~?.V Subcommands: add, checkout[co], status[st], update[up] For help on subcommands, use the -?/--help subcommand option. • Using NHibernate Criteria API to select sepcific set of data together with a count

  I have the following domain set up for persistence with NHibernate: I am using the PaperConfiguration as the root aggregate. I want to select all PaperConfiguration objects for a given Tier and AcademicYearConfiguration. This works really well as per the following example: ICriteria criteria = session.CreateCriteria<PaperConfiguration>() .Add(Restrictions.Eq("AcademicYearConfiguration", configuration)) .CreateCriteria("Paper") .CreateCriteria("Unit") .CreateCriteria("Tier") .Add(Restrictions.Eq("Id", tier.Id)) return criteria.List<PaperConfiguration>(); (Perhaps there is a better way of doing this though). Yet also need to know how many ReferenceMaterials there are for each PaperConfiguration and I would like to get it in the same call. Avoid HQL - I already have an HQL solution for it. I know this is what projections are for and this question suggests an idea but I can't get it to work. • WCF- Large Data

  I have a WCF Web Service with basicHTTPBinding , the server side the transfer mode is streamedRequest as the client will be sending us large file in the form of memory stream. But on client side when i use transfer mode as streamedRequest its giving me a this errro "The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request" And when i look in to trace information , i see this as the error message Exception: There is a problem with the XML that was received from the network. See inner exception for more details. InnerException: The body of the message cannot be read because it is empty. I am able to send up to 5MB of data using trasfermode as buffered , but it will effect the performance of my web service in the long run , if there are many clients who are trying to access the service in buffered transfer mode. • Linq to List and IEnumerable issues

  I am querying an HTML file with Linq. I've got this far my my queries: Dim goalieList = From d In player.Elements _ Where d.Value = "Goalies" _ Select From g In d.ElementsAfterSelf _ Take While (g.@class <> "role") _ Select New Players With {.Position = "Goalie", _ .Name = g.Value} Dim centersList = From d In player.Elements _ Where d.Value = "Centers" _ Select From g In d.ElementsAfterSelf _ Take While (g.@class <> "role") _ Select New Players With {.Position = "Centers", _ .Name = g.Value} Which gets me down to the the players by position, but then I can't do much with this afterwards the result type is System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable(Of System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable(Of Player)) What I want to do is add these two results to a new list, like: Dim playersList As List(Of Players) = Nothing playersList.AddRange(centersList) playersList.AddRange(goalieList) So that I can then query the list and use it. But it kicks the error: Unable to cast object of type 'WhereSelectEnumerableIterator2[System.Xml.Linq.XElement,System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable1[Players]]' to type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable`1[Players]' As you can see, I may really have no idea how to work with all these objects/classes. Does anyone have any insight on what I may be doing wrong and how I can resolve it? RESOLVED: The Linq query needs to return a single iEnumerable, like this: Dim goalieList = From l In _ (From d In players.Elements _ Where d.Value = "Goalies" _ Select d.ElementsAfterSelf.TakeWhile(Function(f) f.@class <> "role")) _ Select New Players With {.Position = "Goalie", .Name = l.Value} and then use goalieList.ToList
