  • "io: postinst-must-call-ldconfig" when creating a package

    I'm trying to create an ubuntu .deb package for the (pretty awesome) Io Language. I am not the developer of that language, so I'm not familiar with its sourcecode yet. This is my first attempt at creating a .deb file. In order to create the .deb, I'm following these instructions: http://www.webupd8.org/2010/01/how-to-create-deb-package-ubuntu-debian.html So far I've been able to create a .deb file (io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.deb) and a changes file (io_201.06.01-1_amd64.changes). I'm using lintian to check the changes file, and it reports an issue I don't know how to resolve: $ lintian -Ivi io_2010.06.01-1_amd64.changes ... The current way of installing Io in Ubuntu is basically running sudo make install and then sudo ldconfig. Maybe the makefile should be modified so ldconfig is called from it? I don't know.   • VMware Player- no Maverick GUI after install

    I'm experimenting with using both VMware Player and Virtualbox to run an Ubuntu VM in Win7. I have the VB install of Maverick working fine, and with only a few quirks such as slow response in Firefox scrolling and the occasional freeze, it works fine. However, making backup copies of a VB machine for storage is a PIA, and so I would like to see how Player works in the same situation. I created a new VM with 2GB RAM & 30GB hard drive space. The install went smoothly, but everytime I start the VM, no GUI shows and I have no mouse control. It brings me to a screen saying Ubuntu Easy Install: VMware Player is installing VMware Tools.. please wait. At this point, I get a login prompt and then goes to a standard CLI interface. At this point, I have no mouse control at all. The CPU and memory gauge that I have as a Win7 screenlet shows no changes and minimal HDD activity. The VMWare site says to install the Tools by a tarball, going to VMInstall VMware Tools, but I can't do that with no mouse control. Any solutions?

    Currently, I am using PandoraBoy to listen to my Pandora stations. In the preferences, it allows you to set global hotkeys to control playing, like/dislike, volume, stations, etc. What I would like to do is allow the built-in media keys on my MacBook Pro's keyboard (F7-F12: Previous, Play/Pause, Next, Mute, Volume Up, Volume Down) to control PandoraBoy like they do iTunes. Right now, I am using Command-F(7-12) to control it, but that requires me to hold down the "fn" and command keys Is there a way to bind these commands to the media keys without needing to function-shift them?

  • Best practice for managing dynamic HTML modules?

    I've been building web apps that add and remove lots of dynamic content and even structure within the page, and I'm not impressed by the method I'm using to do it. When I want to add a section or module into a position in the interface, I'm storing the html in the code, and I don't like that: if (rank == "moderator") { $("#header").append('<div class="mod_controls">' + // content, using + to implement line breaks '</div>'); } This seems like such a bad programming practice.. There must be a better way. I thought of building a function to convert a JSON structure to html, but it seems like overkill.   • Sorting a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

    Last week's article, Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, showed, step-by-step, how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application. Last week's article started with creating a new ASP.NET MVC application in Visual Studio, then added the Northwind database to the project and showed how to use Microsoft's Linq-to-SQL tool to access data from the database. The article then looked at creating a Controller and View for displaying a list of product information (the Model). This article builds on the demo application created in Displaying a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC, enhancing the grid to include bi-directional sorting. If you come from an ASP.NET WebForms background, you know that the GridView control makes implementing sorting as easy as ticking a checkbox. Unfortunately, implementing sorting in ASP.NET MVC involves a bit more work than simply checking a checkbox, but the quantity of work isn't significantly greater and with ASP.NET MVC we have more control over the grid and sorting interface's layout and markup, as well as the mechanism through which sorting is implemented. With the GridView control, sorting is handled through form postbacks with the sorting parameters - what column to sort by and whether to sort in ascending or descending order - being submitted as hidden form fields. In this article we'll use querystring parameters to indicate the sorting parameters, which means a particular sort order can be indexed by search engines, bookmarked, emailed to a colleague, and so on - things that are not possible with the GridView's built-in sorting capabilities. This post is not intended to delve into why the Json GET request is or may be an issue, just how to resolve it as part of upgrading from MVC1 to 2. Solution First remove all references from your projects to the MVC 1 dll and replace it with the MVC 2 dll.     My team has a need to publish documentation internally. At the moment, it's spread all over the place and this means we often have to search everywhere to find something. We'd like to publish everything in one place. The main thing that stops us is access control - the wikis in place don't belong to us and we can't do it. What is the best tool for publishing docs, ideally fitting these requirements: web front end - readers access docs using browser single place to put docs access control by individual doc or by sets of docs (folders, branch of 'site', ...) if you don't have access to a doc, you don't see the link to that page/doc/folder. either built-in editor or something my users are familiar with (e.g. Word) built-in version control would be nice Also, can you think of other criteria I should've specified?

  • How should I show shared resources during a Shared Resource game in the Galaxy Editor?

    One of my favorite ways to play the original StarCraft was in a "Team" game. In this game type, multiple players on the same "team" would share control, resources, supply, and even the same starting location. It was like playing as 1 player, only 2 humans were controlling it. It was a lot of fun. I want to do something very similar in StarCraft 2, but I need to create a custom map in the Galaxy Editor to do it. I found the editor can quite easily emulate this behavior. There is a Trigger action "Set Alliance for Player Group" to "...treat each other as Ally With Shared Vision, Control, And Spending." To use this, I create units for only 1 of the players, and then set all players to be allied with each other in this way. All the other players get no units and no resources. This makes it so 1 player is the actual owner of all the units and everyone else is tagging along with full control. This nearly works! The problem is that if I am not the actual owning player, I can't actually see how many minerals/gas/supply the team has. This makes it pretty difficult to build stuff. What would be the best way to display to the other players how many Minerals/Gas/Supply the team has?

  • Is it better to build HTML Code string on the server or on the client side?

    The result of the following process should be a html form. This form's structure varies from one to user. For example there might be a different number of rows or there may be the need for rowspan and colspan. When the user chooses to see this table an ajax call is made to the server where the structure of the table is decided from the database. Then I have to create the html code for the table structure which will be inserted in the DOM via JavaScript. The following problem comes to my mind: Where should I build the HTML code which will be inserted in the DOM? On the server side or should I send some parameters in the ajax call method and process the structure there? Therefore the main question involves good practice when it comes to decide between Server side processing or client side processing. Thank you!

  • Is it convenient to use a XML/JSON generated based system? [closed]

    One of my clients insists that we missed a requisite for the project(a little social network, using PHP + MySql), is that all queries are made from XML / JSON static files (using AJAX) and not directly from the database. Edit: The main reason, stated by client, is a way to economize bandwith. Even the file loading, has to be using AJAX, to avoid server side processing. We will still use a database to store and insert data. These XML / JSON files will be (re) generated whenever any data is changed by CMS or users. As the project was developed without this "technique", we'll have a lot of work ahead, so I would like to avoid that. I'm asking if it's convenient to use a XML generated based system, because I think a database is already "optimized" and secure to deal with a lot of data traffic. Other issue I'm afraid of, is a chance of conflict when a user is trying to read a XML/JSON which is being just generated.

    Asp.net ha sido una de las tecnologías creadas por Microsoft de mas rápido crecimiento por la facilidad para los desarrolladores de crear sitios web. Una de las partes de mayor importancia que tiene asp.net es el contar con el Membership Provider o proveedor de Membrecía, que permite la creación, manejo y mantenimiento de un sistema completo de control y autenticación de usuarios. Para dar inicio a la serie de post que escribiré sobre que es Membeship y cuáles son las funcionalidades principales daremos unas definiciones. Tal como se menciono anteriormente con el membership provider podemos crear un sistema de control de usuarios completos, entre las funcionalidades principales podemos encontrar: * Creación de usuarios * Almacenamiento de información en base de datos * Autenticación, bloqueos y seguimiento Otras de las ventajas que cabe resaltar, es que, algunos de los controles de asp.net ya traen "naturalmente" en sus funciones la implementación del membership provider, tal como el control "Login" o los controles de estado de usuario, lo cual nos permite que con solo arrastrarlos al diseñador estén funcionando. Membership provider es poderoso, pero su funcionalidad y seguridad se ven aumentadas cuando se integra con otros proveedores de asp.net como lo son RoleProvider y Profile Provider (estos los discutiremos en otros post). En la siguiente figura, podemos ver como se distribuyen algunoS provider creados por Microsoft Antes de iniciar con la implementación de membership debes conocer cosas básicas como el espacio de nombres al que pertenece, el cual es: System.Web.Security que se encuentra dentro del ensamblado System.Web. Algo que debe tomarse en cuenta, es que, para poder utilizar cualquiera de los miembros de la clase, debemos hacer la referencia respectiva. Por defecto, el membership provider está diseñado para trabajar directamente con SQL Server, de ahí que su nombre completo seria SQL Membership Provider. Sin embargo, debido a su gran flexibilidad podemos extenderlo a cualquier base de datos o bien modificarlo para adapatarlo a nuestras necesidades.   • jqGrid - dynamically load different drop down values for different rows depending on another column value

    Goal: As we all know the jqGrid examples in the demo and the Wiki always refer to static values for drop down boxes. This of course is a personal preference but in dynamic design these values should be populated from the database/xml file, etc, ideally JSON formatted. Can you do this in jqGrid, yes, but with some custom coding which we will briefly show below (refer to some of my other blog entries for a more detailed discussion on this topic). What you CANNOT do in jqGrid, referrign here up and to version 3.8.x, is to load different drop down values for different rows in the jqGrid. Well, not without some trickery, which is what this discussion is about. Issue: Of course the issue is that jqGrid has been designed for high performance and thus I have no issue with them loading a  reference to a single drop down values list for every column. This way if you have 500 rows or one, each row only refers to a single list for that particuolar column. Nice! SO how easy would it be to simply traverse the grid once loaded on gridComplete or loadComplete and simply load the select tag's options from scratch, via ajax, from memory variable, hard coded etc? Impossible! Since their is no embedded SELECT tag within each cell containing the drop down values (remeber it only has a reference to that list in memory), all you will see when you inspect the cell prior to clicking on it, or even before and on beforeEditCell, is an empty <TD></TD>. When trying to load that list via a click event on that cell will temporarily load the list but jqGrid's last internal callback event will remove it and replace it with the old one, and you are back to square one. Solution: Yes, after spending a few hours on this found a solution to the problem that does not require any updates to jqGrid source code, thank GOD! Before we get into the coding details, the solution here can of course be customized to suite your specific needs, this one loads the entire drop down list that would be needed across all rows once into global variable. I then parse this object that contains all the properties I need to filter the rows depending on which ones I want the user to see based off of another cell value in that row. This only happens when clicking the cell, so no performance penalty. You may of course to load it via ajax when the user clicks the cell, but I found it more effecient to load the entire list as part of jqGrid's normal editoptions: { multiple: false, value: listingStatus } colModel options which again keeps only a reference to the sinlge list, no duplciation.   • Updating My Online Boggle Solver Using jQuery Templates and WCF

    With WebForms, each ASP.NET page's rendered output includes a <form> element that performs a postback to the same page whenever a Button control within the form is clicked, or whenever the user modifies a control whose AutoPostBack property is set to True. This model simplifies web page development, but carries with it some costs - namely, the large amount of data exchanged between the client and the server during a postback. On postback the browser sends the values of all of its form fields (including hidden ones, like view state, which may be quite large) to the server; the server then sends back the entire contents of the web page. While there are some scenarios where this amount of information needs to be exchanged, in many cases the user has performed some action that requires far less information to be exchanged. With a little bit of forethought and code we can have the browser and server exchange much less data, which leads to more responsive web pages and an improved user experience. Over the past several weeks I've been writing an article series on accessing server-side data from client script. Rather than rely solely on forms and postbacks, many websites use JavaScript code to asynchronously communicate with the server in response to the page loading or some other user action. The server, upon receiving the JavaScript-initiated request, returns just the data needed by the browser, which the browser then seamlessly integrates into the web page. There are a variety of technologies and techniques that can be employed to provide both the needed server- and client-side functionality. Last week's article, Using WCF Services with jQuery and the ASP.NET Ajax Library, explored using the Windows Communication Foundation, or WCF, to serve data from the web server and showed how to consume such a service using both the ASP.NET Ajax Library and jQuery. In a previous 4Guys article, Creating an Online Boggle Solver, I built an application to find all solutions in a game of Boggle. (Boggle is a word game trademarked by Parker Brothers and Hasbro that involves several players trying to find as many words as they can in a 4x4 grid of letters.) This article takes the lessons learned in Using WCF Services with jQuery and the ASP.NET Ajax Library and uses them to update the user interface for my online Boggle solver, replacing the existing WebForms-based user interface with a more modern and responsive interface.   • Bing Maps WPF Hack

    I've spent the past couple of days adding the Bing Maps WFP Control to an application I'm developing. I kept running into a strange thing that was driving me crazy. I have the control in the bottom of a StackPanel, under a Grid. No matter how hard I tried, setting the Height of the Bing control to Auto would cause the ActualHeight to always be 60.93. Now, I still don't know why this is happening. Truth be told, I'm not too sure I care. I did, however, find a reasonable hack around the problem. I do know the size of everything else. As such, I tied into the SizeChanged Event of the StackPanel. Using this, I could set the Height to the correct size based on the new size of the panel. private void ResizeMap( object sender, SizeChangedEventArgs e ) { myMap.Height = ((StackPanel)sender).ActualHeight - 75.0; } The hard-coded number is was because I had a fixed height of controls above my map. If you have dynamic elements, you could easily iterate through them and delete out the portions. So, there you have it. It's not much, but it annoyed the Smurf out of me for a brief period of time. Since I never found an answer, I figured I'd share.

  • Force Direct3D anti-aliasing in a Direct3D game?

    Some old games look really jagged nowadays on large displays without any anti-aliasing, but don't have any option built-in to the game to enable it. On a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card, it's possible to force anti-aliasing in the NVIDIA control panel which can really improve this. But I'm playing the game in Parallels on a Mac, and although the Mac has an NVIDIA graphics card, it's Parallels' emulated card that Windows sees and so obviously there's no NVIDIA control panel. Is there some generic way I can force anti-aliasing for a Direct3D game without using the NVIDIA control panel?

I tried this: remove Lock = Caps_Lock remove Control = Control_L keysym Control_L = Caps_Lock keysym Caps_Lock = Control_L add Lock = Caps_Lock add Control = Control_L I also tried this: xmodmap -e "keycode 66 = Control_L" But neither seem to fully work.   • Can't select hard disk off Windows 7 system image creator

    When I try to create a system image in Windows 7 from the Control Panel (Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Backup and Restore) I get the option to select a hard disk or a removeable disk to select, I have 2 disks and wanted to create the image on my spare one. However when I click refresh it doesn't show either of my disks but shows my CDROM under the removable disks area, anyone have this problem? Also, when I select a USB disk instead, it tries to iamge both my disks! I can't select my active Windows 7 installed disk! How pointless!

  • Should the syntax for disabling code differ from that of normal comments?

    For several reasons during development I sometimes comment out code. As I am chaotic and sometimes in a hurry, some of these make it to source control. I also use comments to clarify blocks of code. For instance: MyClass MyFunction() { (...) // return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; } Even though it "works" and alot of people do it this way, it annoys me that you cannot automatically distinguish commented-out code from "real" comments that clarify code: it adds noise when trying to read code you cannot search for commented-out code for for instance an on-commit hook in source control. Some languages support multiple single-line comment styles - for instance in PHP you can either use // or # for a single-line comment - and developers can agree on using one of these for commented-out code: # return null; // TODO: dummy for now return obj; Other languages - like C# which I am using today - have one style for single-line comments (right? I wish I was wrong). I have also seen examples of "commenting-out" code using compiler directives, which is great for large blocks of code, but a bit overkill for single lines as two new lines are required for the directive: #if compile_commented_out return null; // TODO: dummy for now #endif return obj; So as commenting-out code happens in every(?) language, shouldn't "disabled code" get its own syntax in language specifications? Are the pro's (separation of comments / disabled code, editors / source control acting on them) good enough and the cons ("shouldn't do commenting-out anyway", not a functional part of a language, potential IDE lag (thanks Thomas)) worth sacrificing? Edit I realise the example I used is silly; the dummy code could easily be removed as it is replaced by the actual code.

  • Sound in Ubuntu 12.10 on Chromebook

    I've got an HP Chromebook 14 that I've rooted and installed Ubuntu via Crouton (upgraded to 12.10) and most things are working nicely. One issue that I am having trouble solving relates to sound. I've got sound output that I can control via the individual app (e.g. Youtube), but when trying to control the volume via the built-in xfce4-mixer, I get the following error: GStreamer was unable to detect any sound devices. Some sound system specific GStreamer packages may be missing. It may also be a permissions problem. Opening a terminal, I can run the alsamixer and control the volume levels. It is reporting back that the card is CRAS. I'd love to be able to do it from XFCE and the built-in mixer. I've tried re-installing the GStreamer packages, but no luck. It seems like I am close but not sure where to go from here. On a maybe unrelated note, plugging headphones into the headphone jack in Ubuntu also does not stop the sound from coming from the speakers and nothing comes through the headphones. Switching back to ChromeOs, everything works as expected, so I think that it's a driver issue.
