• One Database vs. Multiple Databases

  What have been less than optimal design choices, that are now (almost) immutable features of the modern PC system, and what constraints led to these choices? There have been a great many of these. For example the qwerty keyboard is widespread although the Dvorak keyboard might be a better choice. I guess this is something to do with the teletypes that were used as early computer keyboards, which had originally been modified from typewriters.

In godaddy when paying only for domain, without hosting, they state you can get one page hosting for free but that option only opens their web-builder. Can you recommend how I can proceed? Thank you

• Windows 7 Ultimate Restore From Another Machine

  The situation I have an old machine running Windows Server 2008. I make a backup of selected directories. New Machine: I install Windows 7 Ultimate (and Windows Server 2008 [dual boot]) I cannot restore those files that I backed-up on the old machine. On the New machine neither the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 Restore (Recovery) can 'see' the backup files even though they are on the local machine. Is this behaviour (non-behaviour) 'by design' or am I missing something?

  I can't seem to find a guide or reference on how to configure the 'indicator-applet' (aka MessagingMenu) that came about in the 9.04 release of Ubuntu. It's that little mail icon that lists messaging apps. I can find docs about what it should do, people complaining about how it works, references that the API changed in 9.10, but not much on how to change the configuration. The MessagingMenu design spec page says that the config file should be at $HOME/.config/indicators/messages/applications/, but there's nothing there on my install (9.10).

  I want to make some pdf cheat sheet documents. I don't have much experience in design and publishing. I wonder if there are any tools that can simplify producing cheat sheets with a standard but beautiful layout. It might be a template document or a generator software if there is some. Part of it's use is to run a screensaver that itself shows useful information.   I'm doing a lot of website design and I'm looking for a feature that would allow me to set the main colors of website in variables and use the variables in color overlays and such. It would make changing the color scheme of site a lot easier and that would help previewing different possibilities. So, does such feature exists, or is there some kind of plugin for it? It is small, it is fast, it is configurabel, and since I've used it (and it's predecessor QEdit) for over twenty years, my fingers can do the editing on autopilot, while the brain is busy with syntax and design. Do you know of a similar editor preferably one that runs on Windows, Linux and OS X (and Solaris ..) I've tried to use VIM (I know how to use VI even longer thant TSE) but it doesn't feel right.

• Chrome Open in New Tab/Window Menu Items

  The problem is, both Firefox and Internet Explorer have "Open in New Tab" as the second option. This has become muscle memory for me by now, to the point that I don't use as often as I want to, solely because I can't open a page in a new tab without thinking about it. Is there a way to switch the position of "Open Link in new tab" and "Open link in new window", so that I can resume browsing as normal, or am I cursed by this user interface design nightmare by Google?

• Clicked View Designer on a WinForm. Why was the file auto Checked out from Source Control?

  When I click "View Designer" to view a Winform in Design mode, VS2010 automatically checks out the file. I realize that there are probably options to silently check out the file without connfirmation, but why is VS thinking that it needs the file checked out in the first place?   Is there any way to get Windows Explorer tree view in Windows 7 to stop jumping? I think they really messed up this design. Click a node to expand a deeper level and it instantly scrolls the tree vertically to a new location. This is not a good feature since my eye completely loses the node it was focused on and I have to hunt for where I was. I want the tree view to remain fixed where it is unless I scroll it myself.

• Google Chrome: How do I get my status bar back?

  This silly design of the status bar popping up and disappearing is really bothering me. I used to have a few good extensions on my status bar in Firefox (Pagerank, AdBlock, etc) and now they all have to be placed in strange locations on the toolbars near the top without easily displaying any relevant information. • I have a 48" 1080p TV set and need to know the maximum resolution I can send from my computer

  My 48" screen is 1080p supporting 1920 x 1080 resolution. I need to design a canvas on my computer that will send to this screen via HDMI cable. Should the dimensions of this canvas be 1920 x 1080 pixels or 2862 x 1587 pixels (because 48" converted to pixels equals this in Illustrator) Thanks
