• Solaris to Linux conversion: Use VxFS or GFS?

  We're a Solaris shop looking at RedHat Enterprise Linux and one of the things we're wondering is if we should keep Veritas Volume Manager + FileSystem or go with LVM+ext3 or RedHat's preferred cluster filesystem solution, GFS. One of the things we like about Veritas is that it can use Veritas Volume Replicator to have a remote copy of important filesystems. This functionality seems to be missing from RedHat, DRBD doesn't seem to be packaged in RHEL... So my questions are: Does anybody use VxFS/VxVM/VVR on Linux? Thoughts, experiences? Comparison with LVM+ext3? Anybody using GFS? Thoughts, experiences? Do you do remote replication for disaster recovery, and if so, how? Is there a standard RedHat way?

  I am coding a simple space empire management game in Visual C# 2008, which relies on connecting to a remote SQL server database to get/store data. I would like the user to be able to connect to a user-specified SQL server from the login screen(he specifies IP address, port, database name, ID, password and presses "connect" button). However, I found out that the Dataset connection string property is read only and cannot be changed. Is there any way to guide the wizard-generated DataSet to a user-specified server at run time?

• How to sync a folder on a remote computer to a server on a domain

  We have a small remote office that often share data with us. I learned that the data is shared as a email attachment, but that obviously leads to versioning hell and overriding. I am looking for a way for then to synchronize a folder directly on our main office domain controller. I personally use LiveMesh, but I would like a tool that is synchronized to our server directly without a 3rd party hosting the data, since we already have an online backup service taking care of the offsite backup. What enterprise class tool would let us synchronize a folder from a remote computer that is out of our domain, into our the file server of our domain? The synchronization has to be two-way, e.g.: Someone from the remote office will create an invoice. Someone from our office will review it and make modification to it. The remote office need to see the change. Our server is on Windows 2003.

• Ubuntu server - Problem of routing

  Hi, I have setup a Ubuntu server with Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud. The server is connected to a private LAN with DHCP and Internet access (via a gateway). At first, the server was working fine. It can ping the internet. It can also ping other machine inside LAN. The problem happened after i let the machine idle for more than 1 hour. When I want to use the machine again, I can't ping the internet anymore. I can only ping the machine inside LAN. I try to ping the server from another machine and it's working. Then, i ssh into that server from another machine, and I found that I can ping the internet from that server. It seems that there are some problems in the routing table of this server. Can anyone help me on this? Thank you. Max

  Hi there, so we've procured a monster of a SQL Cluster and 4 screaming fast machines running the apps/WFE to start up our MOSS 2007 Enterprise Server farm, however I've got one server from the old server farm configuration that was just re-imaged and is still running decently, it's a 32 bit machine where the others are 64 bit machines so it really can't serve the same role as a 64 bit machine. I'd like to see if there's a role for it somewhere in the farm, a few thoughts: --Dedicated Search Query Server --Dedicated Excel Services Has anyone out there been in a similar situation? What did they do?

  I am wondering if there is a way to change the schema that I am working in while inside Management Studio. For instance I may have a default schema of dbo. But there are times I may want to query objects in say the accounting schema. It would be nice if I could issue a command and make it so I no longer must include the accounting before tables and views. But the next time I go in, I will be back to default of dbo.

• HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451dn Phantom Print Jobs

  Scenario: Multiple printers hooked up to a printer server (2008r2) including this HP LaserJet Pro 400 Color M451dn. All machines that are using the printer are based on Windows 7 Enterprise x64. Problem: Every couple of days the users who frequent this printer let me know that a few dozen pages with random characters down one side of the paper print out. This happens usually during the evening when no one is around to send print jobs to it. What I have done: Provided the below screen shot of the printer log with what I assume is the print jobs in question. I have looked into the printer driver compatibility and found no issues. Question: Is there a known issue with this printer or similar printers, and is there a solution that people are familiar with when they see multiple pages of gibberish printing out?

• Vista laptop won't connect to airport extreme

  Our previous router died, and to replace it I procured an apple airport extreme. My mac, my wrt54gs (with ddwrt acting as a bridge) and a linux machine have had no problem connecting to the wireless. None of the wired clients are having a problem obviously. The problem is one of my roommates can not connect. That's not strictly true. He can connect to the network, and will, infact, get a dhcp lease. However he cannot get any packets out. Can't ping the router, can't access any web sites, nothing. However he's fine if we switch to an unsecured network. Which is obviously not acceptable. The airport only allows for 'wpa/wpa2 personal' and 'wpa2 personal' (and of course the enterprise versions there of) I keep reading about this problem in multiple spots on the web, but never see any actual answers...   going to try my best to explain: our exchange 2003 was migrated to exchange 2007 (was not here for the migration). Looking in active directory sites and services - services - Microsoft exchange - company - address list container - recipient update services i have two recipient update services 1) recipient update service (enterprise configuration) 2) recipient update service (my-domain) my guess is one of these is left from the old exchange 2003. (im guessing this because the migration was not done properly, the exchange server was never actually uninstall, it was just taken offline, and then later disposed of). could having two of these cause me issues, and if so, how do i know which one i could get rid of ? Im asking because i honestly have no idea. it might even be nothing. thanks

  I just migrated a development workstation FROM: Windows XP Pro SP3 with IIS 6 TO: Vista Enterprise 64bit with IIS 7 Since the move, one of my pages that accesses an SQL Server 2000 database is receiving the following error from my ASP.NET 2.0 web page: "Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON'." I have: enabled Windows Authentication in IIS and web.config disabled Anonymous Authentication in IIS set up Impersonation to run as the authenticated user verified that the logged in user (in this case, me) has access to the appropriate database on the SQL Server verified that my login and impersonation information is correct in the ASP.NET page by checking User.Identity.Name and System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity.GetCurrent().Name (both display my username) My connection string using SqlConnection is "Server={SERVER_NAME};Database={DB_NAME};Integrated Security=SSPI;Trusted_Connection=True;" Why is it trying to login with NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGIN? I have to assume it's some setting or web.config entry specific to IIS7 since it worked fine before the migration. NOTE: The SQL Server is Windows authentication only - no mixed mode or SQL only.

• CheckPoint VPN-1 SecureClient inability to navigate behind a Linksys WAG300N

  I have a Linksys WAG300N, I'm accessing my LAN with Wifi and everything works fine on my Windows 7 Enterprise laptop. When I try to connect to my company's VPN the connection succeeds, but I cannot access any internet site either within my work network or public site like Yahoo or Google. In my Linksys control panel I already verified all types of VPNs are enable to passthrough. Normal IPSec and Windows VPN worked in the past without any problems. CheckPoint seems to have a solution, but I do not have the ability to change the IP in my client and of course using another NAT device in between is not a solution for me. • Checking for orphaned snapshots - ESXi5

  So we had some issues with our passive mail node over the weekend doing vmtools updates and to resolve a problem we had to revert to a snapshot and then reseed all the databases across. All in all everything seemed fine, the server works and CCR copy status is running fine. I used the "Delete All" option this morning to remove the snapshot and the process according to vCenter has completed with no errors and no "Needs Consolidation" flag. This all seems fine until I check the Datastore that holds the VM on our SAN and I can clearly see snapshots that are pretty big [see attached image]. These do not seem to be changing size and the data modified is around the time the works were started for the vmtools update. Does this possibly mean that at some stage, possibly during reversion or hard resetting of the VM, that they have become orphaned? Are there any methods to check orphaned status of snapshots? We are running ESXi5.0 Update 1 with storage provide by an EMC SAN. Enterprise plus is the license level.

• wbadmin incremental system state backup

  I am doing system state backups on a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (Service Pack 1) machine and expected the backups after the first one to be incremental. However with each backup a new directory with vhd files are created and the vhd files are almost the same size as the with the first backup. So the backups does not seem to be incremental. I used the following command to do the backup: wbadmin start systemstatebackup -backupTarget:f: I played around with the settings under "Configure Performance Settings" in the Windows Server Backup plugin in Server Manager but according to the description at the top of the dialog these settings are not applied to system state backups. Are there any settings available for wbadmin system state backup to make the backups incremental?
