• How to execute a script while booting Linux from flashdrive?

  I know i can make my script run at boot time in runlevel 2 by putting it in /etc/init.d/ and creating a symbolic to it in /etc/rc2.d but thats when Linux is on hard drive. I want to run my script from a flashdrive such that when a user plug in a flashdrive and powers ON the machine, it may start booting from the OS in flash drive and eventually executing my script. How can I achieve such a functionality? I have tried burning OS to flashdrive but I never succeeded in booting OS from flashdrive.

  After installing IIS on my dev system, window xp professional, its asking for username and password while trying to access http://localhost. Can you please help me out. Tried googling and tried may things but could not resolve the issue.   I'm stuck how best to configure disk array. We have Hp P2000 G3 disk array with 24 SAS physical disks 300Gb each. We need to configure this array got 2 copies of PostgreSQL 9.2 because two different system. As we know it's recommended to store database and transaction logs(pg_xlog) files on separate disks. So we must setup 4 logical disk: 2 for transaction logs with RAID 1 2 for database with RAID 10 Is this right scheme of distribution? Or may be it is best to just make one big RAID 10 with 4 logical disks?

  In virtually every FreeBSD network tuning document I can find: # /boot/loader.conf net.inet.tcp.tcbhashsize=4096 This is usually paired with some unhelpful statement like "TCP control-block hash table tuning" or "Set this to a reasonable value." man 4 tcp isn't much help either: tcbhashsize Size of the TCP control-block hash table (read-only). This may be tuned using the kernel option TCBHASHSIZE or by setting net.inet.tcp.tcbhashsize in the loader(8). The only document I can find that touches on this mysterious thing is the Protocol Control Block Lookup subsection beneath Transport Layer in Optimizing the FreeBSD IP and TCP Stack, but its description is more about potential bottlenecks in using it. It seems tied to matching new TCP segments to their listening sockets, but I'm not sure how. What exactly is the TCP Control Block used for? Why would you want to set its hash size to 4096 or any other particular number?

• Inheritance vs containment while extending a large legacy project

  I have got a legacy Java project with a lot of code. The code uses MVC pattern and is well structured and well written. It also has a lot of unit tests and it is still actively maintained (bug fixing, minor features adding). Therefore I want to preserve the original structure and code style as much as possible. The new feature I am going to add is a conceptual one, so I have to make my changes all over the code. In order to minimize changes I decided not to extend existing classes but to use containment: class ExistingClass { // .... existing code // my code adding new functionality private ExistingClassExtension extension = new ExistingClassExtension(); public ExistingClassExtension getExtension() {return extension;} } ... // somewhere in code ExistingClass instance = new ExistingClass(); ... // when I need a new functionality instance.getExtension().newMethod1(); All functionality that I am adding is inside a new ExistingClassExtension class. Actually I am adding only these 2 lines to each class that needs to be extended. By doing so I also do not need to instantiate new, extended classes all over the code and I may use existing tests to make sure there is no regression. However my colleagues argue that in this situation doing so isn't a proper OOP approach, and I need to inherit from ExistingClass in order to add a new functionality. What do you think? I am aware of numerous inheritance/containment questions here, but I think my question is different.

  One of the co-founders answered questions about the company when the job was posted, but I feel like I shouldn't assume that he's the one who is in charge of hiring. Since it's relatively new and has a lot of name overlap with other things already on the web, it's hard to find any information about the company online, much less the name of their hiring manager. I'm not even certain that they do have a hiring manager, since I seem to remember that they are just an 8 person team. I've heard that "To whom it may concern" is tacky, and normally I would say something along the lines of "Dear Head of Human Resources", but that clearly doesn't work in this case. Any idea what my salutation should be? • How should we deal with multiple transaction-report requests?

  We are developing a system for the retail market which one of it's features will enable clients(actually consumer clubs) to go through all transactions made by end-clients. One of the ways to get this information will be via an API. The idea is that there will be requests for reports with a start date and an end date, and a response will have all the transactions between those dates. We are worry that some reports may be very large, and that some clients will repeatedly request for reports, in this case the DB and CPU will be very overloaded. The same server that will service those requests, also takes care the the actual retail transactions (received by proprietary devices) and a Web application. We are not sure about how to limit the report requests from the API so that it won't affect the system too much. So, how should we deal with this scenario? any thoughts? EDIT: just to make clear: When I mentioned proprietary devices I meant "On-Location" devices which are used during sales with end-clients, this means that these requests shouldn't get delayed, and this is the main concern.

• Font rendering in Internet Explorer vs other browsers on Windows XP

  I have four browsers installed on my Windows XP SP3 machine: Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 3.5, Safari 4, and Google Chrome. For whatever reason, fonts appeared to be rendered differently in IE than in the other browsers. It seems the fonts are anti-aliased in IE but not in the others. Why might this be? Is this an issue with the browsers or my operating system? I've noticed this issue on several Windows XP machines that I've used. While it may seem like no big deal, the lack of font smoothing in the other browsers keeps me from using them as my primary browser. Most importantly, what can I do to get the other browsers to render fonts smoothly?

  I'm fresher than the prince to Linux, I've been following the instructions here: http://chrisfulstow.com/running-node-js-on-windows-with-virtualbox-and-ubuntu (the link tells what I am generally trying to do). I'm all up and running in VBox, and am at the curl install part, I may have done the curl part a week ago I forget. • crippling repeating "pciehp card not present" notifications

  When using ubuntu (12.04, both installed and on a live usb) I get a lot of these messages: pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card not present on Slot(37) pciehp 0000:00:1c.5:pcie04: Card present on Slot(37) And with a lot I mean about 20 per second. This has a crippling effect, and I would like to get rid of it :) The computer is a packard bell easynote BG48-U-100 DC. I tip I picked up from some fedora/redhat error here was to look at lspci -vnn. I have pasted the part about "00:1c.5" here: http://pastebin.com/0sfsiqW2 For what good it may do, here is the lsmod of my machine: http://pastebin.com/DQZy1kAL From that first pastebin I think to conclude that it has to do with the module shpchp, which seems to me (aka: google) to have something to do with ACPI. That's as far as I've come in disecting this. Can anyone help me along further? What can I do, check etc? I did see this topic but my intentions are not to surpress the error message: I know how to do this (from that topic ;) ), but I'm looking for a real sollution. Finding the problem on the internet does suspect me to believe it is neither an ubuntu specific nor a packard-bell specific problem.If you google the problem it seems that is present on several other distribution/hardware combo's as well, and it looks like the advice is to remove one of the drivers? I have no clue as to which driver I should look at and and what would be the effect of just removing it. I have seen this topic which is old-ish, but describes my problem and is about a similar computer. The solution in this topic was to compile a new kernel using a spanish guide, which seems a bit extreme to me, so I'm kinda hoping for a better solution than that.

• ATI Radeon HD 5770 Cooling

  I have a Radeon HD 5770 manufactured by ATI. In the course of using compressed air to clean it the fan shattered. I put a case fan on the card to cool it, but it's not doing a great job; the temperature goes to nearly 100 sometimes. The card is not overclocked or anything, the PC itself is clean. I looked around for a third party cooling system but the only one I found was the Accelero L2 Pro. It's low on stock and I don't know how great it will be, some review say it may not fit on all 5770 cards. Does anyone know of another one that will work? Help is much appreciated.

  Hi, I installed the Facebook Like button Javascript version on my website on December 15th. Take a look at this report from Google Webmaster Central. Crawl stats Googlebot activity in the last 90 days The crawl stats are from Googlebot which as far as I know doesn't execute Javascript. Could the Facebook Like Javascript code, "The XFBML version" be related to large spike in Time spent downloading a page? (By the way the huge spike in November was caused by a mistake where every image request was getting a 301.) I'm not sure what caused the spike to go down by half somewhere in December. It may have been related to a faulty setting in web.config. I'm at a loss as to what I can do about this or even how to tell if this is my problem or Googlebots crawl problem. • Queue'ing cron jobs up to 10 times

  Hi All, This kind of touches on another post I made but is different so I have posted it as a new question. I have a script that runs that may take just over 1 minute to process, and my cron is set to run every minute. I can stop another cron job executing the script if the first one hasn't finished by using flock (php) in the file, however, this means that I would lose one iteration of the routine and have to wait nearly a minute before it is triggered again (as my understanding leads me to believe). What I would like to do is if the script is locked, not bomb out, but wait. Over time however, this could get quite high so I would also like to limit the amount of queued cron's to 10. I am a real newbie with Linux (had a Linux VPS for 3 days now) so I am not sure if my solution is even practical. Thanks.

Is it safe to do the following, I have folder downloads1 in /home/user1/www/downloads1/ i have user2, can i make a group - groupadd sharedfiles add both users to the group: useradd -g sharedfiles user1 useradd -g sharedfiles user2 then chown -r -v user1:sharedfiles downloads1/ User 2 i want to have /home/user2/www/downloads1 but i want it to be a symlink like ln "downloads1" "/home/user1/www/downloads1/" lrwxrwxrwx 1 user2 sharedfiles 11 May 9 14:20 downloads1 -> /home/user1/www/downloads1/ Is this a safe practice? Or is there a better way to do this if I want them both to be able to share the files for distribution over apache. Is there any drawbacks to this? Thanks in advance for any light shed on this. • Windows won't ctrl+c and ctrl+v

  Using Ctrl+C and V I am unable to copy or paste anything. I have tried many different applications and still no luck. I am able to copy/paste via the shortcut menu when you right click the mouse. Ctrl+F works which means the Ctrl button is functional. I've tried restoring to an earlier restore point. I also ran SFC /SCANNOW (System File Checker) which did not find any errors. Ctrl+C and then right click and paste doesn't work either. I have tried with external and internal keyboard and still no luck. I've clicked on all the relevant search results from Google but none of them work for me. Does anyone know what may be causing this issue and how I can correct it? This problem comes and goes at random times.

  I tried to build a simple graphics engine, and faced with this problems: i have a list of models that i need to draw, and object (renderer) that implements IRenderer interface with method DrawObject(Object* obj). Implementation of renderer depends on using graphics library (opengl/directx). 1st question: model should not know nothing about renderer implementation, but in this case where can i hold (cache) information that depends on renderer implementation? For example, if model have this definition: class Model { public: Model(); Vertex* GetVertices() const; private: Vertex* m_vertices; }; what is the best way to cache, for example, vertex buffer of this model for dx11? Hold it in renderer object? 2nd question: what is the best way for model to say renderer HOW it must be rendered (for example with texture, bump mapping, or may be just in one color). I thought it can be done with flags, like this: model-SetRenderOptions(RENDER_TEXTURE | RENDER_BUMPMAPPING | RENDER_LIGHTING); and in Renderer::DrawModel method check for each flag. But looks like it will become uncomfortable with the options count growth...

  In need to find the age in days - months - years in OpenOffice. There is DATEDIF() in Microsoft Excel. You can use it to find the difference in days/months/years between two dates. Age Calculation You can calculate a persons age based on their birthday and todays date. The calculation uses the DATEDIF() function. The DATEDIF() is not documented in Excel 5, 7 or 97, but it is in 2000. (Makes you wonder what else Microsoft forgot to tell us!) Birth date : 01-Jan-60 Years lived : 52 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"y") and the months : 4 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"ym") and the days : 30 =DATEDIF(C8,TODAY(),"md") One can calculate by below formula, but it is cumbersome to calculate months. Another way to calculate age This method gives you an age which may potentially have decimal places representing the months. If the age is 20.5, the .5 represents 6 months. I need to provision a new server today, and I'm curious if the Alternate CD is still the only way to setup LVM/RAID at installation time. I'm my limited experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, I noticed it's single installer configures LVM automatically. I have a dns load balancing mechanism and an alias (hostAlias) which may point to host01, or host02 I want to configure apache and shibboleth to work with that alias. What happens is ... User types : https://hostAlias (it points to host01) apache host01 : redirect to shibboleth shibboleth host01 : redirect to **https://hostAlias.cern.ch/Shibboleth.sso/ADFS** Now, there are two cases. Either this time hostAlias will point again to host01 , or it will point to host02. If it points to host02, host01 will not get the anwser and the authentication fails.
