• Perspective Is Everything

  Sitting on a window seat on my way back from Seattle I looked out the window and saw the large body of water. I was reminded of childhood memories of running as hard as I could through burning hot sand with the anticipation of the splash of the ocean. Looking out the window the water appeared like a sheet draped over land. I couldn’t help but ponder how perspective changes everything.  Over the last several days I had a chance to attend the MVP Summit in Redmond. I had a great time with fellow MVP’s and the SharePoint Product Group. Although I can’t say much about what was discussed and what is coming in the future, I want to share some realizations I had while experiencing the MVP summit.  The SharePoint Product is ever-improving, full of innovation but also a reactionary embodiment of MVP, client and market feedback. There are several features that come to mind that clients complain about where I have felt helpless in informing them that the features are not as mature as they would like it. Together, we figure out a way to make it work and deal with the limitations. It became clear that there are features that have taken a different purpose in the market place from the original vision. The SP Product group is working hard to react to these changes in vision and make SharePoint better for real life implementations.  It is easy to think that SharePoint should be all things to all people. In reality there are products that are very detailed in specific composites, they do this one thing well but severely lack in other areas.  Its easy sometimes to say, “What was Microsoft thinking with this feature?” the Product group is doing all they can to make the moving pieces better and dealing with challenges with having all of them work together.  Sometimes the features don’t fully embody the vision because of the many challenges, but trust me when I say the product group is really focused on delivery and innovation.  As I was speaking with a fellow MVP throughout the session, we spoke about the iPad 2(ironically announced this past week during the MVP summit) and Microsoft’s possible product answer; I realized the days of reactionary products from MS is over. There are many users that will remember Vista and the painful execution in that product, but there has been a lot of success in Windows 7. There was no rush for a reactionary answer to the Nintendo Wii, as a result a ground breaking and game changing product was brought to market, the XBOX –Kinect! I can’t say much here, but it’s safe to say, expect innovation, and execution of products and technology that will change the market instead of react to them!       There are many things I learned and I would love to share that have to do with perspective, technology, etc… but this is far as I can go in details. This might not be new to you or specifically the message that was shared during the summit. These are just my impressions of the event and the spirit of future vision. Great things ahead!

• What common interface would be appropriate for these game object classes?

  Question A component based system's goal is to solve the problems that derives from inheritance: for example the fact that some parts of the code (that are called components) are reused by very different classes that, hypothetically, would lie in a very different branch of the inheritance tree. That's a very nice concept, but I've found out that CBS is often hard to accomplish without using ugly hacks. Implementations of this system are often far from clean. But I don't want to discuss this any further. My question is: how can I solve the same problems a CBS try to solve with a very clean interface? (possibly with examples, there are a lot of abstract talks about the "perfect" design already). Context Here's an example I was going for before realizing I was just reinventing inheritance again: class Human { public: Position position; Movement movement; Sprite sprite; // other human specific components }; class Zombie { Position position; Movement movement; Sprite sprite; // other zombie specific components }; After writing that I realized I needed an interface, otherwise I would have needed N containers for N different types of objects (or to use boost::variant to gather them all together). So I've thought of polymorphism (move what systems do in a CBS design into class specific functions): class Entity { public: virtual void on_event(Event) {} // not pure virtual on purpose virtual void on_update(World) {} virtual void on_draw(Window) {} }; class Human : public Entity { private: Position position; Movement movement; Sprite sprite; public: virtual void on_event(Event) { ... } virtual void on_update(World) { ... } virtual void on_draw(Window) { ... } }; class Zombie : public Entity { private: Position position; Movement movement; Sprite sprite; public: virtual void on_event(Event) { ... } virtual void on_update(World) { ... } virtual void on_draw(Window) { ... } }; Which was nice, except for the fact that now the outside world would not even be able to know where a Human is positioned (it does not have access to its position member). That would be useful to track the player position for collision detection or if on_update the Zombie would want to track down its nearest human to move towards him. So I added const Position& get_position() const; to both the Zombie and Human classes. And then I realized that both functionality were shared, so it should have gone to the common base class: Entity. Do you notice anything? Yes, with that methodology I would have a god Entity class full of common functionality (which is the thing I was trying to avoid in the first place). Meaning of "hacks" in the implementation I'm referring to I'm talking about the implementations that defines Entities as simple IDs to which components are dynamically attached. Their implementation can vary from C-stylish: int last_id; Position* positions[MAX_ENTITIES]; Movement* movements[MAX_ENTITIES]; Where positions[i], movements[i], component[i], ... make up the entity. Or to more C++-style: int last_id; std::map<int, Position> positions; std::map<int, Movement> movements; From which systems can detect if an entity/id can have attached components.

• Parameterized StreamInsight Queries

  The changes in our APIs enable a set of scenarios that were either not possible before or could only be achieved through workarounds. One such use case that people ask about frequently is the ability to parameterize a query and instantiate it with different values instead of re-deploying the entire statement. I’ll demonstrate how to do this in StreamInsight 2.1 and combine it with a method of using subjects for dynamic query composition in a mini-series of (at least) two blog articles. Let’s start with something really simple: I want to deploy a windowed aggregate to a StreamInsight server, and later use it with different window sizes. The LINQ statement for such an aggregate is very straightforward and familiar: var result = from win in stream.TumblingWindow(TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5))               select win.Avg(e => e.Value); Obviously, we had to use an existing input stream object as well as a concrete TimeSpan value. If we want to be able to re-use this construct, we can define it as a IQStreamable: var avg = myApp     .DefineStreamable((IQStreamable<SourcePayload> s, TimeSpan w) =>         from win in s.TumblingWindow(w)         select win.Avg(e => e.Value)); The DefineStreamable API lets us define a function, in our case from a IQStreamable (the input stream) and a TimeSpan (the window length) to an IQStreamable (the result). We can then use it like a function, with the input stream and the window length as parameters: var result = avg(stream, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5)); Nice, but you might ask: what does this save me, except from writing my own extension method? Well, in addition to defining the IQStreamable function, you can actually deploy it to the server, to make it re-usable by another process! When we deploy an artifact in V2.1, we give it a name: var avg = myApp     .DefineStreamable((IQStreamable<SourcePayload> s, TimeSpan w) =>         from win in s.TumblingWindow(w)         select win.Avg(e => e.Value))     .Deploy("AverageQuery"); When connected to the same server, we can now use that name to retrieve the IQStreamable and use it with our own parameters: var averageQuery = myApp     .GetStreamable<IQStreamable<SourcePayload>, TimeSpan, double>("AverageQuery"); var result = averageQuery(stream, TimeSpan.FromSeconds(5)); Convenient, isn’t it? Keep in mind that, even though the function “AverageQuery” is deployed to the server, its logic will still be instantiated into each process when the process is created. The advantage here is being able to deploy that function, so another client who wants to use it doesn’t need to ask the author for the code or assembly, but just needs to know the name of deployed entity. A few words on the function signature of GetStreamable: the last type parameter (here: double) is the payload type of the result, not the actual result stream’s type itself. The returned object is a function from IQStreamable<SourcePayload> and TimeSpan to IQStreamable<double>. • Profiling Startup Of VS2012 &ndash; JustTrace Profiler

  JustTrace is made by Telerik which is mainly known for its collection of UI controls. The current version (2012.3.1127.0) does include a performance and memory profiler which does cost 614€ and is currently with a special offer for 306€ on sale. It does include one year of free upgrades. The uneven € numbers are calculated from the 799€ and 50% dicsount price. The UI is already in Metro style and simple to use. Multi process, attach, method recording filter are not supported. It looks like JustTrace is like Ants a Just My Code profiler. For stuff where you do not have the pdbs or you want to dig deeper into the BCL code you will not get far. After getting the profile data you get in the All Methods grid a plain list with hit count and own time. The method list for all methods is also suspiciously short which is a clear sign that you will not get far during the analysis of foreign code. But at least there is also a memory profiler included. For this I have to choose in the first window for Profiling Type “Memory Profiler” to check the memory consumption of VS.  There are some interesting number to see but I do really miss from YourKit the thread stack window. How am I supposed to get a clue when much memory is allocated and the CPU consumption is high in which places I should look? The Snapshot summary gives a rough overview which is ok for a first impression. Next is Assemblies? This gives you a list of all loaded assemblies. Not terribly useful.   The By Type view gives you exactly what it is supposed to do. You have to keep in mind that this list is filtered by the types you did check in the Assemblies list. The By Type instance list does only show types from assemblies which do not originate from Microsoft. By default mscorlib and System are not checked. That is the reason why for the first time my By Type window looked like The idea behind this feature is to show only your instances because you are ultimately responsible for the overall memory consumption. I am not sure if I do like this feature because by default it does hide too much. I do want to see at least how many strings and arrays are allocated. A simple namespace filter would also do it in my opinion. Now you can examine all string instances and look who in the object graph does keep a reference on them. That is nice but YourKit has the big plus that you can also look into the string contents.  I am also not sure how in the graph cycles are visualized and what will happen if you have thousands of objects referencing you. That's pretty much it about JustTrace. It can help the average developer to pinpoint performance and memory issues by just looking at his own code and instances. Showing them more will not help them because the sheer amount of information will overwhelm them. And you need to have a pretty good understanding how the GC and the CLR does work. When you have a performance issue at a customer machine it is sometimes very helpful to be able a bring a profiler onto the machine (no pdbs, …) and to get a full snapshot of all processes which are in the problematic use case involved. For these more advanced use cased JustTrace is certainly the wrong tool. Next: SpeedTrace

• WTSQuerySessionInformation returning empty strings

  I've written a program which should query the Terminal Services API and print out some state information about the sessions running on a terminal services box. I'm using the WTSQuerySessionInformation function to do this and it's returning some data but most of the data seems to be missing... Does anyone know why? • MSDTC attempts to enlist client machine in a distributed transaction

  Hi there We're seeing the following intermittent warning logged by MSDTC: A caller has attempted to propagate a transaction to a remote system, but MSDTC network DTC access is currently disabled on machine 'X'. Please review the MS DTC configuration settings. However, MSDTC is disabled on machine X by design - it's a client machine, and has no business being enlisted in the transaction! Several windows service endpoints hosting WCF services over TCP Single SQL Server 2005 instance beneath Linq to Sql Remote client receives event callbacks over WCF/TCP The issue is tricky to reproduce - usually following restart of services. We suspect a callback to the client machine is occurring within the context of a transaction. Just wondering if anyone has seen similar issues?? Ken

• Detect user logout / shutdown in Python / GTK under Linux

  OK this is presumably a hard one, I've got an pyGTK application that has random crashes due to X Window errors that I can't catch/control. So I created a wrapper that restarts the app as soon as it detects a crash, now comes the problem, when the user logs out or shuts down the system, the app exits with status 1. But on some X errors it does so too. • XML parsing error: 'A string literal was expected' when inserting values into table

  In Microsoft Sequel Server 2008 I am attempting to insert values into an sql table with the columns type_id of datatype int and xml_info of datatype XML. I am using the following query: INSERT INTO tbl_applied_devices ([type_id],[xml_info]) VALUES (1,'<Profile ID=99><Server><ID>BC4A18CA-AFB5-4268-BDA9-C990DAFE7783</ID> <Name>localhost</Name><Services></Services></Server></Profile>') But I keep getting this error: Msg 9413, Level 16, State 1, Line 4 XML parsing: line 1, character 13, A string literal was expected What am I doing incorrectly? Thank you for the help. EDIT: I found that the source of the error is the xml element's ID attribute, where seems to be what is causing the error. How can I correctly insert xml with an attribute ? Do I need to somehow escape one of the characters?

• In WPF: Children.Remove or Children.Clear doesn't free objects

  I create some UIElements from code behind and was anticipating the garbage collection to clear up stuff. However, the objects are not free-ed at the time I expected it. I was expecting them to be freeed at RemoveAt(0), but they are only freed at the end of the program. • Help with Design for Vacation Tracking System (C#/.NET/Access/WebServices/SOA/Excel) [closed]

  I have been tasked with developing a system for tracking our company's paid time-off (vacation, sick days, etc.) At the moment we are using an Excel spreadsheet on a shared network drive, and it works pretty well, but we are concerned that we won't be able to "trust" employees forever and sometimes we run into locking issues when two people try to open the spreadsheet at once. So we are trying to build something a little more robust. I would like some input on this design in terms of maintainability, scalability, extensibility, etc. It's a pretty simple workflow we need to represent right now: I started with a basic MS Access schema like this: Employees (EmpID int, EmpName varchar(50), AllowedDays int) Vacations (VacationID int, EmpID int, BeginDate datetime, EndDate datetime) But we don't want to spend a lot of time building a schema and database like this and have to change it later, so I think I am going to go with something that will be easier to expand through configuration. Right now the vacation table has this schema: Vacations (VacationID int, PropName varchar(50), PropValue varchar(50)) And the table will be populated with data like this: VacationID | PropName | PropValue -----------+--------------+------------------ 1 | EmpID | 4 1 | EmpName | James Jones 1 | Reason | Vacation 1 | BeginDate | 2/24/2010 1 | EndDate | 2/30/2010 1 | Destination | Spectate Swamp 2 | ... | ... I think this is a pretty good, extensible design, we can easily add new properties to the vacation like the destination or maybe approval status, etc. I wasn't too sure how to go about managing the database of valid properties, I thought of putting them in a separate PropNames table but it gets complicated to manage all the different data types and people say that you shouldn't put CLR type names into a SQL database, so I decided to use XML instead, here is the schema: <VacationProperties> <PropertyNames>EmpID,EmpName,Reason,BeginDate,EndDate,Destination</PropertyNames> <PropertyTypes>System.Int32,System.String,System.String,System.DateTime,System.DateTime,System.String</PropertyTypes> <PropertiesRequired>true,true,false,true,true,false</PropertiesRequired> </VacationProperties> I might need more fields than that, I'm not completely sure. I've used this code to implement the Web Services: public class VacationConfigurationService : WebService { [WebMethod] public void UpdateConfiguration(string xml) { // Above code goes here } } Which was pretty easy, although I'm still working on a way to validate that XML against some kind of schema as there's no error-checking yet. I also created a few different services for other operations like VacationSubmissionService, VacationReportService, VacationDataService, VacationAuthenticationService, etc. The whole Service Oriented Architecture looks like this: And because the workflow itself might change, I have been working on a way to integrate the WF workflow system with MS Visio, which everybody at the office already knows how to use so they could make changes pretty easily. We have a diagram that looks like the following (it's kind of hard to read but the main items are Activities, Authenticators, Validators, Transformers, Processors, and Data Connections, they're all analogous to the services in the SOA diagram above). The requirements for this system are: (Note - I don't control these, they were given to me by management) Main workflow must interface with Excel spreadsheet, probably through VBA macros (to ease the transition to the new system) Alerts should integrate with MS Outlook, Lotus Notes, and SMS (text messages). We also want to interface it with the company Voice Mail system but that is not a "hard" requirement. Performance requirements: Must handle 250,000 Transactions Per Second Should be able to handle up to 20,000 employees (right now we have 3) 99.99% uptime ("four nines") expected Must be secure against outside hacking, but users cannot be required to enter a username/password. Platforms: Must support Windows XP/Vista/7, Linux, iPhone, Blackberry, DOS 2.0, VAX, IRIX, PDP-11, Apple IIc. Time to complete: 6 to 8 weeks. My questions are: Is this a good design for the system so far? Am I using all of the recommended best practices for these technologies? How do I integrate the Visio diagram above with the Windows Workflow Foundation to call the ConfigurationService and persist workflow changes? Am I missing any important components? Will this be extensible enough to support any scenario via end-user configuration? Will the system scale to the above performance requirements? Will we need any expensive hardware to run it? Are there any "gotchas" I should know about with respect to cross-platform compatibility? For example would it be difficult to convert this to an iPhone app? How long would you expect this to take? • WCF: Using Streaming and Username/Password authentication at the same time

  Hi, I have a WCF Service with the following requirements: a) The client requests a file from the server which is transferred as a Stream. Files may be 100MB or larger. I need streaming or chucking or whatever to make sure that IIS is not loading the whole package into memory before starting to send it. b) The client will transfer an ID to identify the file to be downloaded. The user should be authenticated by providing username/password. c) While the username/password part of the communication needs to be encrypted, encryption of the downloaded file is optional for our use case. My other services, where I am returning smaller files, I am using the following binding: <ws2007HttpBinding> <binding name="ws2007HttpExtern" maxReceivedMessageSize="65536000"> <security mode="Message"> <message clientCredentialType="UserName" /> </security> </binding> </ws2007HttpBinding> But, as I said, that is no good for streaming (Message encryption needs the complete message to encrypt and that is not the case when streaming). • In an iPad SplitView, how do I add a Date Picker control to the Root View?

  I'm diving into iPhone OS development on the iPad and one of the things I'm playing with is the SplitView template. The template provides a window with a UISplitView view, containing the Root View (on the left of the window) and the Detail View (on the right of the window). The Root View is a subclass of a TableView. Rather than having the entire Root View consist of a TableView, I'd like it to contain a DatePicker view along with the TableView under it. When I go into IB and try and drop a DatePicker into the Root View, it won't let me. It will only let me add a DatePicker view to the Detail View. Why wont IB let me drop a DatePicker view into the Root View? How can I add a DatePicker to the RootView in addition to the TableView? I'm still learning this new platform, so I apologize if these questions are absurd in any way. Thanks so much in advance for your help, I'm going to continue researching these questions right now.

  I am working with a Web application, based on Asp.Net 3.5 and WSS 3.0 platform. Recenlty i've got a task as follows. Import bank statement using FTX - Desktop application and parse those statements into database in every 24 hours ie. i need to download bank statement with the help of a desktop application(which i can call by batch file). Then i have to go through each statement(text file) and convert those data into our database for future reference. As far as i know, .Net provides the following options to implement such a functionality. SharePoint Timer Jobs Web Services WCF Windows Services I would like to go for SharePoint Timer Jobs, but there are some plans to move whole application to Asp.net platform. I am interested with WCF since i haven't much experience with WCF applications, but not in a position to take final decision :) Which is the most suitable way for this kind of task? Please suggest.

• Unable to load UIView with initWithNibName in Apple SDK 3.1.3

  I am trying to load my UIViewController and corresponding UIView programmatically in the AppDelegate class. What is funny is that it worked before and then just stopped working. I am wondering if this is a bug in iPhone SDK 3.1.3??? This is a really annoying issue, and I was quite a ways along in a new project when I started having this problem and had to start over with a blank project and copy over all of my resources, when it started happening again... I have uninstalled iPhone OS 3.1.3 and reinstalled and the problem prevails... I also created a second UIViewController class and corresponding nib which DOES LOAD just fine... I am not sure why one works and the other doesn't it... • IIS 7 Authentication: Certain users can't authenticate, while almost all others can.

  I'm using IIS 7 Digest authentication to control access to a certain directory containing files. Users access the files through a department website from inside our network and outside. I've set NTFS permissions on the directory to allow a certain AD group to view the files. When I click a link to one of those files on the website I get prompted for a username and password. With most users everything works fine, but with a few of them it prompts for a password 3 times and then get: 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials. But other users that are in the group can get in without a problem. If I switch it over to Windows Authentication, then the trouble users can log in fine. That directory is also shared, and users that can't log in through the website are able to browse to the share and view files in it, so I know that the permissions are ok. • SSL certificate on IIS 7

  I am trying to install a SSL certificate on IIS 7. I have download a free trial certificate. After that, this is the steps what I do: Click the Start menu and select Administrative Tools. Start Internet Services Manager and click the Server Name. In the center section, double click on the Server Certificates button in the Security section. From the Actions menu click Complete Certificate Request. Enter the location for the certificate file. Enter a Friendly name. Click OK. Under Sites select the site to be secured with the SSL certificate. From the Actions menu, click Bindings.This will open the Site Bindings window. In the Site Bindings window, click Add. This opens the Add Site Binding window. Select https from the Type menu. Set the port to 443. Select the SSL Certificate you just installed from the SSL Certificate menu. Click OK. This is the step where I get the message: One or more intermediate certificates in the certificate chain are missing. To resolve this issue, make sure that all of intermediate certificates are installed. For more information, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954755 After this, when I access the web site on its first page, I get this message: There is a problem with this website's security certificate. What am I doing wrong?

• axis2 web service behave differently when tested with web service client or with local test class

  Hello I need to update a facade to some web service proxy classes to a third party web service, and expose them as a service. This for two reason : to maintain the same interface for all application that need to use the system : actually its migrating and there are a few differences in the third party ws (method names); and to expose a simplified interface. The third party has provided me with a manual and some pregenerated proxy classes to their service (the java file says generated with axis2 1,4) . I've used netbeans 6.8 and the axis2 plugin to create an axis2 service . This service contains the proxy classes and the facade class which instantiate the web service proxy and calls its method; the facade class is exposed as service. I've used axis2 1.4 (at beginnig and later 1.5 ) and tomcat 6.0. The first test i did was to call the facede methods from inside the project itself and it worked. Then i've created a new project with a jax-ws web service client to call my class deployed on axis2. At this point has happened two strange thing : In the axis2 services page has appeared the third party proxy class as if it were a new service (if i try to get the wsdl axis raises an error ). eg. the proxy interface is named WebServiceAPI (_stub is the concrete class) and , after the first call to my service , i find a new "WebServicesAPI1272968932531_1" service inside axis . The call obvoiusly fail i've began to sniff soap messages with wireshark and i've found they differs when using proxy classes direclty from my facade test class by the messages created after being deployed on axis. i've noticed they differs for the presence of the soap header in the failing message. any help would be greatly appreciated : maybe i messed up something, there might be some incompatibilities or version mistakes? below i've added the signature of the third party proxy, its impementation and the different soap messages: /* * WebServicesAPI.java * This file was auto-generated from WSDL * by the Apache Axis2 version: 1.4 Built on : Apr 26, 2008 (06:24:30 EDT) */ package com.ibm.eci.wsapi; • Unknown Build Error using WPF Toolkit

  I installed the Feb 2010 WPF Toolkit as I'm interested in evaluating the AutoCompleteBox control and I'm having extremely limited success. I can get the control to work, but as soon as I try and set any of it's properties in XAML, I get the following: Unknown build error, 'Cannot resolve dependency to assembly 'WPFToolkit, Version=3.5.40128.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35' because it has not been preloaded. When using the ReflectionOnly APIs, dependent assemblies must be pre-loaded or loaded on demand through the ReflectionOnlyAssemblyResolve event. I've been testing this on a blank WPF window in a new solution. I'm guessing I'm just missing a reference or something... • In the Xcode SplitView template for an iPad app, how do I add a Date Picker control to the Root View

  I'm diving into iPhone OS development on the iPad and one of the things I'm playing with is the SplitView template. The template provides a window with a UISplitView view, containing the Root View (on the left of the window) and the Detail View (on the right of the window). The Root View is a subclass of a TableView. Rather than having the entire Root View consist of a TableView, I'd like it to contain a DatePicker view along with the TableView under it. When I go into IB and try and drop a DatePicker into the Root View, it won't let me. It will only let me add a DatePicker view to the Detail View. Why wont IB let me drop a DatePicker view into the Root View? How can I add a DatePicker to the RootView in addition to the TableView? I'm still learning this new platform, so I apologize if these questions are absurd in any way. Thanks so much in advance for your help, I'm going to continue researching these questions right now.

• Using IIS Application Request Routing (ARR) for ASP.NET MVC

  I use a simple ASP.NET MVC web (the template you use when you create a new site) and the web works as expected in my live environment. I now try to use IIS Application Request Routing version 2. I have a rule that send all reuqests to a different server that match a rule. The settings are a bit like this: http://blogs.iis.net/wonyoo/archive/2008/07/09/application-request-routing-arr-as-a-reverse-proxy.aspx My rule is just a bit different it is /shop(.*). Only requests that contain shop are send to a different server. I have to use rewrite, not redirect (The same as in the Picture) This works as long as the web the original requests go to is no ASP.NET MVC web. I tried to use a plain htm file in the webfolder and it worked. If put a compiled ASP.NET application into the webfolder it worked. But as soon as I put an ASP.NET MVC web into the folder, request arr served by this application. My understanding is that the ARR should kick in before the web application gets the chance to handle the request. Did anybody use ARR sucessfully as a reverse proxy for a ASP.NET MVC web? EDIT Here is the resulting web config when the rewrite roule is entered. • Can't Deploy or Upload Large SSRS 2008 Report from VS or IE

  So far in this project I have two reports in VS2008/BIDS. The first one contains 1 tablix and is about 100k. The second one contains 3 tablixes (tablices?) and is about 257k. I can successfully deploy the smaller report from VS and I can upload it from the Report Manager in IE. I can view/run it from Report Manager and I can get to the Report Server (web service) URL from my browser just fine. Everything is done over HTTPS and there is nothing wrong with the certificates. With the larger report, the error I get in VS is "The operation has timed out" after about 100 seconds. The error when I upload from IE is "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send" after about 130 seconds. In the RSReportServer.config file I tried changing Authentication/EnableAuthPersistence from true to false and restarting the service, but still get the error. I have the key "SecureConnectionLevel" set to 2. Changing this to 0 and turning off SSL is not going to be an option. I added a registry key named "MaxRequestBytes" to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\HTTP\Parameters and set it to 5242880 (5MB) and restarted the HTTP and SRS services as suggested in a forum post by Jin Chen of MSFT. I still cannot upload the larger report. This is on MS SQL 2008 and WS 2003.
