I've encountered in the following paragraph: “Debug vs Release setting in the IDE when you compile your code in Visual Studio makes almost no difference to performance… the generated code is almost the same. The C# compiler doesn’t really do any optimisation. The C# compiler just spits out IL… and at the runtime it’s the JITer that does all the optimisation. The JITer does have a Debug/Release mode and that makes a huge difference to performance. But that doesn’t key off whether you run the Debug or Release configuration of your project, that keys off whether a debugger is attached.” The source is here and the podcast is here. • Xcode 3.1.2 locks up when loading C++ project...?

  I have a project which builds correctly from the command line. On one of my Macs (10.5) running Xcode 3.1.2, I can load it and build it in the Xcode IDE. On my other Mac (same configuration of software), Xcode sometimes loads the project, but always locks up with a spinning beach ball at some point before the build is done. Sometimes this occurs as the project is loaded, sometimes late in the build. I've tried doing a 'clean' on the project, I've tried pulling in the source code fresh from source control. So far, no luck -- I have to kill Xcode and in effect, cannot develop on this particular Mac. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Xcode. Any clues?

• Binding hudson build number in C# project

  Hi, Is there a way to bind the hudson successful build's number in the C# WPF application? Meaning, on running the exe after building I want to show the build number say 10 in my application somewhere. In project configuration file, I have used ${BUILD_NUMBER}, that a hudson understands and creates a build with the revision number. If I build the Project revision # 10, I get 10.exe. Can I have something that will show this number somewhere in my application? Hope I am clear. Please help.

  I have load balanced web servers, that with the existing code base, handles when a user logs into the site. I would like to send a broadcast message to any applications that have subscribed saying 'hey x logged in' ? So have many web servers and many applications subscribing. How does discovery work/configuration work with nservicebus ? Should each application know about each web server and subscribe individually or is this where the distributer comes in, so web servers all send to the 1 distributer and all application subscribe to single distributer and the distributer relays the message ?   I am trying to create a set of WCF web services for an existing website that uses web site instead of a web application project. I would like to create a DLL that I drop into the Bin folder instead of writing all my code inside the App_Code directory. Ideally, I want to create a project and reference it from the web site, but I am running into a difficult situation. The DLL will need to reference configuration and other DLLs located inside the bin folder of the website causing a circular reference. How do I get around this issue?

  Hi all, I've set up a Ubuntu Server for Subversion with Apache/WebDAV interface to share repositories with other developers. My question is, how can I make Subversion use the linux system accounts for authentication? This would lead to very easy Subversion account management. • Which faces technology for use with GlassFish 2.1 and NetBeans 6.7?

  I'm running GlassFish 2.1 and using NetBeans 6.7. I'd like to create a web interface to my data using JSF 1.2. Trouble is, I'm not sure which 'faces' technology to learn (that includes some good documentation). JBoss/RichFaces seem pretty good on documentation, but I'm using GlassFish. Any thoughts? • Low overhead Java Web Services container?

  I want to provide a Java-based Web Service, but I don't require the features of a full-blown J2EE Application Server. I would like it to start as quickly as possible, though that's not a hard requirement. The Web Service will handle multiple connections and require access to an Oracle database so it will at least require a thread pool and database connection pool. I may want to put a JSP interface onto it later to provide an internal maintainence interface. I have looked at Jetty with an Apache CXF stack, but it looks like I'll have to do a fair amount configuration before even coding the web service - Will it be worth it? Will it even work? Should I forget about the complexity and simply go with JBoss/Weblogic/etc and put up with the bloat and extra start-up time?

• Is it possible to link directories in git?

  I will start with a simplified example describing my intent. I have a repository my-rep.git containing two directories, src and deploy. In src I have my source code (NodeJS code, but that doesn't matter), and in deploy I want to keep my deploy configuration. So for example if I have a project, projectA, then the structure should look like this, my-rep.git/src/projectA my-rep.git/deploy/projectA/dotcloud.yml my-rep.git/deploy/projectA/src Now to my question. I want the source code in projectA to be available in the deploy directory for dotcloud. Is there any way I can make my-rep.git/deploy/projectA/src point to my-rep.git/src/projectA, that is, so when I do a git pull in deploy it will automatically pull the my-rep.git/deploy/projectA/src. It must be supported in git, symbolic linux links won't work as some developers in my team work in Windows.

  Hi there, I have created a custom MembershipProvider class, so far so good, however, I am not sure how to read the configuration settings from the web.config file. I tried to search from Google and Stackoverflow, seems like someone also experiencing my problem and asked, but no answer has been given. It should be a simple thing, but I am very new in web development, so reading settings from web.config seems away too technical to me. • HTTP POSTed files automatically uploaded to root directory

  I just inherited an ASP.NET WebForms web application that I was tasked with refactoring. One of the features is a file upload and while debugging I noticed that as soon as a file is posted to a certain page/handler, it is automatically uploaded to the root directory of the application. The file is then moved to the proper location. I can't seem to figure out whats causing this automatic upload of the file. Is there something I'am overlooking in ASP.NET WebForms that allows this to happen? Is it an IIS configuration or something?

• Differentiate VMware network adapter from physical network adapters

  I have to differentiate between the real addresses and the VM addresses using any Windows API. I'm using Getadaptersaddresses API to populate a list of ipaddresses for the local machine. I need to extract only the "real" addresses apart from the addresses associated with the VMware network adapter and other addresses(auto-configuration and tunnel adapter addresses) I've not been able to find any API or any flag to differentiate this. Is there any way this can be done? PS:The IfType flag in the IP_ADAPTER_ADDRESSES structure returned by Getadaptersaddresses doesn't help me differentiate between VMware addresses and the real addresses

• Efficient multiple services exposed over c# .NET remoting using more channels or end points?

  I am using remoting over TCP for a prototype distributed server application where I want to have varying multiple services exposed from each remoting server process. In some cases I want the services running from the same process but I don't want whatever is using the service to care about that. I am wondering is it more efficient to have multiple services in the same process going over the same remoting channel distinguished by endpoint URI/URL or should I be creating new channels on different ports for each service in the same process? Using up ports isn't so much of a problem as the number of services will be low and the network and machine configuration is completely controlled. Also its not clear to me if remoting sends the URI string for every single message or just at connection time, and whether if the remoting framework is intelligent enough to reduce work if calls are made on the same machine and even the same process? • Why isn't my log4net appender buffering?

  I've created a custom log4net appender. It descends from log4net.Appender.SmtpAppender which descends from log4net.Appender.BufferingAppenderSkeleton. I programatically setup the following parameters in its constructor: this.Lossy = false; //don't drop any messages this.BufferSize = 3; //buffer up to 3 messages this.Threshold = log4net.Core.Level.Error; //append messages of Error or higher this.Evaluator = new log4net.Core.LevelEvaluator(Level.Off); //don't flush the buffer for any message, regardless of level I expect this would buffer 3 events of level Error or higher and deliver those events when the buffer is filled. However, I'm finding that the events are not buffered at all; instead, SendBuffer() is called immediately every time an error is logged. Is there a mistake in my configuration? Thanks

  I have a spring web application (currently packaged as a war file) which I would like to be able to launch from jetty in a stand-alone configuration (small scale all-in-one deployment, and for launching in the development environment). Since I am already using spring, it seems like what I want to do is create my jetty Server and WebContext objects, and initial JNDI context using spring. However this seems to overlap with the jetty.xml method of configuring the same environment. Is one approach better? Is the does jetty.xml offer anything easier than I can get using spring?

• Storing And Using Microsoft User Account Credentials in SQL Server 2008 database

  I'm not exactly positive how to word this for the sake of the title so please forgive me. Also I can't seem to figure out how to even google this question, so I'm hoping that I can get a lead in the right direction. Part of my software(VB.NET App) requires the ability to access/read/write a shared network folder. I have an option for the user to specify any credentials that might be needed to access said folder. I want to store these credentials given in the SQL Server database as part of the config (I have a table which contains configuration). My concern is that the password for the user account will be unencrpyted. Yet, if I encrypt the password the VB.NET App And/Or database will be unable to use the credentials for file i/o operations unless the Password is unencrypted before use. I'm fishing for suggestions on how to better handle this situation.

  I’m building a site that needs users created with different roles and permissions to access different areas of the site. I using mvc 2 but I can’t find much clear guidance on using the Membership tool with mvc to create accounts and roles etc. I tried the web configuration tool which works but I would like to administrate the site remotely. I used the aspnet_regsql tool so I can access the SqlMembershipProvider Schema in my Database. I also need to add more information to a user like profile info and a picture, would I add these to the membership tables or create separate tables for this? • How to program three editions Light, Pro, Ultimate in one solution

  I'd like to know how best to program three different editions of my C# ASP.NET 3.5 application in VS2008 Professional (which includes a web deployment project). I have a Light, Pro and Ultimate edition (or version) of my application. At the moment I've put all in one solution with three build versions in configuration manager and I use preprocessor directives all over the code (there are around 20 such constructs in some ten thousand lines of code, so it's overseeable): #if light //light code #endif #if pro //pro code #endif //etc... I've read in stackoverflow for hours and thought to encounter how e.g. Microsoft does this with its different Windows editions, but did not find what I expected. Somewhere there is a heavy discussion about if preprocessor directives are evil. What I like with those #if-directives is: the side-by-side code of differences, so I will understand the code for the different editions after six months and the special benefit to NOT give out compiled code of other versions to the customer. OK, long explication, repeated question: What's the best way to go?

  When I right-click in my class library, I get some quick options to create things, like an Item from the popup list (New Item...), a User Control, etc. E.g. Now in my web app project, I'd like to be able to get the User Control listed in the right-click menu just like Component and Class, so I don't have to click New Item... then choose it from there. Is there a way to do this in the configuration? I can't seem to figure it out in VS.

  Hello, I have a database (sql 2008 mdf file), a class library project with an edmx file, created with the wizard. So the connection string is also made by the wizard. This project is on a teamfoundation server. I can use all the wizard made objects when coding. But when i run the program and I try to make an entityContainerName, the program crashes and gives this error: The specified named connection is either not found in the configuration, not intended to be used with the EntityClient provider, or not valid. on this line: public TestEntities() : base("name=TestEntities", "TestEntities") How can I solve this problem or what am I doing wrong?
