  • Solaris 11

    - by user9154181
Oracle has a strict policy about not discussing product features until they appear in shipping product. Now that Solaris 11 is publically available, it is time to catch up. I will be shortly posting articles on a variety of new developments in the Solaris linkers and related bits: 64-bit Archives After 40+ years of Unix, the archive file format has run out of room. The ar and link-editor (ld) commands have been enhanced to allow archives to grow past their previous 32-bit limits. Guidance The link-editor is now willing and able to tell you how to alter your link lines in order to build better objects. Stub Objects This is one of the bigger projects I've undertaken since joining the Solaris group. Stub objects are shared objects, built entirely from mapfiles, that supply the same linking interface as the real object, while containing no code or data. You can link to them, but cannot use them at runtime. It was pretty simple to add this ability to the link-editor, but the changes to the OSnet in order to apply them to building Solaris were massive. I discuss how we came to invent stub objects, how we apply them to build the OSnet in a more parallel and scalable manner, and about the follow on opportunities that have emerged from the new stub proto area we created to hold them. The elffile Utility A new standard Solaris utility, elffile is a variant of the file utility, focused exclusively on linker related files. elffile is of particular value for examining archives, as it allows you to find out what is inside them without having to first extract the archive members into temporary files. This release has been a long time coming. I joined the Solaris group in late 2005, and this will be my first FCS. From a user perspective, Solaris 11 is probably the biggest change to Solaris since Solaris 2.0. Solaris 11 polishes the ground breaking features from Solaris 10 (DTrace, FMA, ZFS, Zones), and uses them to add a powerful new packaging system, numerous other enhacements and features, along with a huge modernization effort. I'm excited to see it go out into the world. I hope you enjoy using it as much as we did creating it. Software is never done. On to the next one...

  • Ubuntu 11.10 overheating with Sony Vaio

    - by Paul Connolly
I am a Windows user trying to move over to Ubuntu without much success. I have installed the 11.10 version as dual boot by using Wubi tool on the Ubuntu website and can only use the operating system for about 5 minutes before it overheats and shuts off the machine. I have done my searches and seen many posts about overheating but cannot see one that I am able to apply to my particular case. Can anyone give me a steer on this please?

  • Creating classed in JavaScript

    - by Renso
    Goal:Creating class instances in JavaScript is not available since you define "classes" in js with object literals. In order to create classical classes like you would in c#, ruby, java, etc, with inheritance and instances.Rather than typical class definitions using object literals, js has a constructor function and the NEW operator that will allow you to new-up a class and optionally provide initial properties to initialize the new object with.The new operator changes the function's context and behavior of the return statement.var Person = function(name) {   this.name = name;};   //Init the personvar dude= new Person("renso");//Validate the instanceassert(dude instanceof Person);When a constructor function is called with the new keyword, the context changes from global window to a new and empty context specific to the instance; "this" will refer in this case to the "dude" context.Here is class pattern that you will need to define your own CLASS emulation library:var Class = function() {   var _class = function() {      this.init.apply(this, arguments);   };   _class.prototype.init = function(){};   return _class;}var Person a new Class();Person.prototype.init = function() {};var person = new Person;In order for the class emulator to support adding functions and properties to static classes as well as object instances of People, change the emulator:var Class = function() {   var _class = function() {      this.init.apply(this, arguments);   };   _class.prototype.init = function(){};   _class.fn = _class.prototype;   _class.fn.parent = _class;   //adding class properties   _class.extend = function(obj) {      var extended = obj.extended;      for(var i in obj) {         _class[i] = obj[i];      };      if(extended) extended(_class);   };   //adding new instances   _class.include = function(obj) {      var included = obj.included;      for(var i in obj) {         _class.fn[i] = obj[i];      };      if(included) included(_class);   };   return _class;}Now you can use it to create and extend your own object instances://adding static functions to the class Personvar Person = new Class();Person.extend({   find: function(name) {/*....*/},      delete: function(id) {/*....*/},});//calling static function findvar person = Person.find('renso');   //adding properties and functions to the class' prototype so that they are available on instances of the class Personvar Person = new Class;Person.extend({   save: function(name) {/*....*/},   delete: function(id) {/*....*/}});var dude = new Person;//calling instance functiondude.save('renso');

  • Is it possible to use mac trackpad gestures on a linux virtualbox? (macbook pro)

    - by David
Specifically, I would just love to use the trackpad to do "three finger swipes" and switch between workspaces, that would just be slick as hell. I imagine this might require a plugin or some such thing, in addition to the disabling of the underlying mac os's responding to the gestures, which is what it currently does. This might be impossible. PS/FYI: I am running ubuntu, but I imagine this might apply to debian builds as well.

  • Plans for Java 7 and E-Business Suite Certification

    - by Steven Chan (Oracle Development)
As of June 2012, Java 7 has not been certified yet with Oracle E-Business Suite.  EBS customers should continue to run JRE 6 on their Windows end-user desktops, and JDK 6 on their EBS servers. If a search engine has brought you to this article, please check the Certifications summary for our latest certified Java release. Our plans for certifying Java 7 for the E-Business Suite We plan on releasing the Java 7 certification for E-Business Suite customers in two phases: Phase 1: Certify JRE 7 for Windows end-user desktops Phase 2: Certify JDK 7 for server-based components When will Java 7 be certified with EBS? We're working on the first phase now. As usual, I cannot discuss release dates here, but you can monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates. Current known issues with JRE 7 in EBS environments Our current testing shows that there are known incompatibilities between JRE 7 and the Forms-invocation process in EBS environments.  We have been working directly with the Java division on this for a while now.  In the meantime, EBS customers should not deploy JRE 7 to their end-user Windows desktop clients. You should stick with JRE 1.6 for now.  But wait, you previously said... Older JRE certification announcements stated: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and higher.  We test all new JRE releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all JRE releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE releases to your EBS users' desktops. Yes, this is true.  This standard boilerplate text was written before JRE 7 was released, so there was no possibility of misunderstanding.  With the availability of JRE 7, that boilerplate needs to be revised to read: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 releases to your EBS users' desktops. • ScissorStack LIBGDX example?

    - by user36531
I cant find a good resource/tutorial on how to do this. I would appreciate it if someone could provide a scissorstack example from an entity class. ie. using scissorstack on PlayerClass such that the map renders around the Player sprite, say 5 tiles. which would then allow me to create a Pawn class and apply same methodology to give a pawn sprite a lower number, like only rendering 1 tile around the location of the pawn.

  • Specifying and applying broad changes to a program

    - by Victor Nicollet
How do you handle incomplete feature requests, when the ones asking for the feature cannot possibly write a complete request? Consider an imaginary situation. You are a tech lead working on a piece of software that revolves around managing profiles (maybe they're contacts in a CRM-type application, or employees in an HR application), with many operations being directly or indirectly performed on those profiles — edit fields, add comments, attach documents, send e-mail... The higher-ups decide that a lock functionality should be added whereby a profile can be locked to prevent anyone else from doing any operations on it until it's unlocked — this feature would be used by security agents to prevent anyone from touching a profile pending a security audit. Obviously, such a feature interacts with many other existing features related to profiles. For example: Can one add a comment to a locked profile? Can one see e-mails that were sent by the system to the owner of a locked profile? Can one see who recently edited a locked profile? If an e-mail was in the process of being sent when the lock happened, is the e-mail sending canceled, delayed or performed as if nothing happened? If I just changed a profile and click the "cancel" link on the confirmation, does the lock prevent the cancel or does it still go through? In all of these cases, how do I tell the user that a lock is in place? Depending on the software, there could be hundreds of such interactions, and each interaction requires a decision — is the lock going to apply and if it does, how will it be displayed to the user? And the higher-ups asking for the feature probably only see a small fraction of these, so you will probably have a lot of questions coming up while you are working on the feature. How would you and your team handle this? Would you expect the higher-ups to come up with a complete description of all cases where the lock should apply (and how), and treat all other cases as if the lock did not exist? Would you try to determine all potential interactions based on existing specifications and code, list them and ask the higher-ups to make a decision on all those where the decision is not obvious? Would you just start working and ask questions as they come up? Would you try to change their minds and settle on a more easily described feature with similar effects? The information about existing features is, as I understand it, in the code — how do you bridge the gap between the decision-makers and that information they cannot access?

This enables other ubuntu members of 'photography' group to add these files to their version of Shotwell. I am planning to join CDN service, so I read through the guide, but I am confused about the 'Update your code' section: Does the CDN apply to my website automatically (without editing HTML) after I updated the DNS zone file? How can I control which files going through the CDN or not? Also, I need to make sure it won't affect the Google Analytics results.

  • How do I get rid of this monitor error?

    - by Dave M G
I have an Nvidia card and two monitors. Every time I log in to Unity on Ubuntu 11.10, I get this error: "Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors" I have tried opening nvidia-settings, but none of my experimental alterations to any of the settings has made a difference. I can still use my computer, but it seems to break the themes, icons, and styles so my computer looks like Unix circa 1992, which is a pretty annoying. How do I kill this error?

  • Structure of a Git repository

    - by Luke Puplett
Sorry if this is a duplicate, I looked. We're moving to Git. In Subversion, I'm used to having \trunk, \branches and \tags folders. With Git, switching between branches will replace the contents of the working directory, so am I right to assume that the way we used to work just doesn't apply with Git? My guess is that I'd have a repo folder with maybe a gitignore and readme.txt, then the folders for the projects that make up the repo, and that's it.
