    Given a string of unknown length, how can you output it using cout so that the entire string displays as an indented block of text on the console? (so that even if the string wraps to a new line, the second line would have the same level of indentation) Example: cout << "This is a short string that isn't indented." << endl; cout << /* Indenting Magic */ << "This is a very long string that will wrap to the next line because it is a very long string that will wrap to the next line..." << endl; And the desired output: This is a short string that isn't indented. This is a very long string that will wrap to the next line because it is a very long string that will wrap to the next line... Edit: The homework assignment I'm working on is complete. The assignment has nothing to do with getting the output to format as in the above example, so I probably shouldn't have included the homework tag. This is just for my own enlightment. I know I could count through the characters in the string, see when I get to the end of a line, then spit out a newline and output -x- number of spaces each time. I'm interested to know if there is a simpler, idiomatic C++ way to accomplish the above.

    Hello, I have a char variable that is supposed to contain either a Y,y,n or N character, I want to test if it does not contain it, then display an error message and exit the program. This is the code I am using; if (userDecision != 'Y' || userDecision != 'y' || userDecision != 'n' || userDecision != 'N') { System.out.println("Error: invalid input entered for the interstate question"); System.exit(0); } Irregardless of what is in the variable it always returns true and executes the command to exit the program, what am I doing wrong?

    we have a large table (5608782 rows and growing) that has 3 columns Zip1,Zip2, distance all columns are currently int, we would like to convert this table to use varchars for international usage but need to do a mass import into the new table convert zip < 5 digits to 0 padded varchars 123 becomes 00123 etc. is there a way to do this short of looping over each row and doing the translation programmaticly?

    I'm trying to set a special cell number format with theses rules: display percentage display at max 3 digits (decimal + integer part) So I can display 100% or 99.3% or 1.27% but not 100.9% or 100.27% or 99.27%. Of course, I can have negative number (-27.3%) and it does not affect my rules. I've try with the cell formating option without success: [<1]0.00%;[<10]0.0%;0% Because it seemed that excel (2010) does not support more than 2 conditions in cell formating (and so I can't expand it to manage negative number...) It there anyway to do what I want? Thanks

    I have a localized string which needs to take a few variables. However, in localization it is important that the order of the variables can change from language to language. So this is not a good idea: NSString *text = NSLocalizedString(@"My birthday is at %@ %@ in %@", nil); In some languages some words come before others, while in others it's reverse. I lack of an good example at the moment. How would I provide NAMED variables in a formatted string? Is there any way to do it without some heavy self-made string replacements? Even some numbered variables like {%@1}, {%@2}, and so on would be sufficient... is there a solution?

  • Autoformat pom.xml without using m2eclipse plugin

    I don't use the Eclipse maven plugin while developing in Eclipse. I generate my Eclipse classpath externally using the following command: mvn eclipse:eclipse This has worked fine for quite some time and I am not inclined to add a maven plugin. However, I would like to be able to "autoformat" my pom.xml file. My pom.xml is not showing up as a "Source" file and therefore the contextual "Source" menu doesn't show up. Control-Shift-F doesn't work either. Is there a way to do this without installing the m2eclipse plugin? Is there any other generic "XML Editor" plugin that can help with this?

    I am working with DateTime, trying to get date in the format like this: 03.05.2010-04.05.23 that is: dd.MM.yyyy-HH.mm.ss I'm using DateTime.ParseExact to try to achieve this (maybe wrong) So far I have: var dateInFormat = DateTime.ParseExact(DateTime.Now.ToShortDateString(), "dd.MM.yyyy.HH.mm.ss", null); But can't quite get exactly what I want. Basically I want to keep the 0, for example time is 05:03:20 PM I don't want it to show like 5:3:20 PM Any ideas?

    Hello, I'm dealing with a courious scenario. I'm using EntityFramework to save (insert/update) into a SQL database in a multithreaded environment. The problem is i need to access database to see whether a register with a particular key has been already created in order to set a field value (executing) or it's new to set a different value (pending). Those registers are identified by a unique guid. I've solved this problem by setting a lock since i do know entity will not be present in any other process, in other words, i will not have same guid in different processes and it seems to be working fine. It looks something like that: static readonly object LockableObject = new object(); static void SaveElement(Entity e) { lock(LockableObject) { Entity e2 = Repository.FindByKey(e); if (e2 != null) { Repository.Insert(e2); } else { Repository.Update(e2); } } } But this implies when i have a huge ammount of requests to be saved, they will be queued. I wonder if there is something like that (please, take it just as an idea): static void SaveElement(Entity e) { (using ThisWouldBeAClassToProtectBasedOnACondition protector = new ThisWouldBeAClassToProtectBasedOnACondition(e => e.UniqueId) { Entity e2 = Repository.FindByKey(e); if (e2 != null) { Repository.Insert(e2); } else { Repository.Update(e2); } } } The idea would be having a kind of protection that protected based on a condition so each entity e would have its own lock based on e.UniqueId property.     As you know, in Eclipse you can turn on "Unnecessary 'else' statement" check that will trigger on if-then-else with premature return. And, from my experience, there are two most possible situations when use such statement: 1) Pre-check: if (validate(arg1)) { return false; } doLotOfStuff(); 2) Post-check: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } else { return bar; } In the second case, if the trigger is on, Eclipse will suggest you to change the code to: doLotOfStuff(); if (condition) { return foo; } return bar; However, I think that the return with else statement is more readable as it is like direct mapping of business logic. So I am curios if this "Unnecessary 'else' statement" code convention is widespread or else statement is more preferable?

  • Padding a string in Postgresql with rpad without truncating it

    Using Postgresql 8.4, how can I right-pad a string with blanks without truncating it when it's too long? The problem is that rpad truncates the string when it is actually longer than number of characters to pad. Example: SELECT rpad('foo', 5); ==> 'foo ' -- fine SELECT rpad('foo', 2); ==> 'fo' -- not good, I want 'foo' instead. The shortest solution I found doesn't involve rpad at all: SELECT 'foo' || repeat(' ', 5-length('foo')); ==> 'foo ' -- fine SELECT 'foo' || repeat(' ', 2-length('foo')); ==> 'foo' -- fine, too but this looks ugly IMHO. Note that I don't actually select the string 'foo' of course, instead I select from a column: SELECT colname || repeat(' ', 30-length(colname)) FROM mytable WHERE ... Is there a more elegant solution?

Most of the formats in the variable are shown above- there are a couple of very rare others too. The reason why there are multiple formats is that the data were pulled together from various websites that each used different formats. I have tried using straightforward conversions e.g. strftime(mydf$date,"%d/%m/%Y") but these sorts of conversion will not work if there are multiple formats. I don't want to resort to multiple gsub type editing. I was wondering if I am missing a more simple solution?     I have a LaTeX document. I want to change the font size of all the text, to make it smaller. Normally I would just change the documentclass part. However I am generating LaTeX files from another programme, and it is setting the documentclass, I can't change that. However I can put things in the preamble. Is there anyway to change the font size in the preamble, without touching the documentclass declaration.

  • Incrmenting a Cookies with PHP (Beginner Question)

    Hello, I have used sessions before but never cookies. I would like to use cookies for two reasons: 1) it's something new to learn 2) I would like to have the cookie expire in an hour or so (i know in the code example it expires in 40 sec) I am trying to write a basic if statement that if($counter=="1") { //do this second } elseif ($counter >="2") { //do this every time after the first and second } else {// this is the first action as counter is zero } Here is the code I'm using to set the cookie: // if cookie doesnt exsist, set the default if(!isset($_COOKIE["counter_cookie"])) { $counter = setcookie("counter_cookie", 0 ,time()+40); } // increment it $counter++; // save it setcookie("counter_cookie", $counter,time()+40); $counter = $_COOKIE["counter_cookie"]; The problem is that the counter will be set from 0 to 1 but won't be set from 1 to 2 and so on. Any help would be great I know this is a really simple stupid question :| Thanks!
