  • Laptop using 14.04 won't get past login GUI

    My laptop was working perfectly yesterday, and now today I can't log in. At first, I was only getting a black screen. However, after following instructions in some questions here on AskUbuntu, I first reinstalled lightdm, and then I had to change the ownership of the file ~/.Xauthority to be my user name. Now, I get the log in GUI screen. However, once I enter my username, it flickers and then comes back to the login GUI. It does not matter if I use Gnome, Unity, or Gnome-Flashback. I don't know why lightdm needed to be reconfigured, or how ~/.Xauthority got changed, but in any case, what is still standing in my way, preventing me from logging in? Update: I have tried deleting the .Xauthority file, and the .profile files in my home directory. It has not changed anything. Logging in as guest also fails to work. The following commands did not work: mv ~/.config ~/.config.BAK mv ~/.cache ~/.cache.BAK Inside .xsession-errors in my home directory, it says: Gdk-CRITICAL: gdk_x11_display_get_xdisplay: assertion 'GDK_IS_DISPLAY (display)' failed

  • Finding "Stuff" In OUM

    One of the first questions people asked when they start using the Oracle Unified Method (OUM) is “how do I find X ?” Well of course no one is really looking for “X”!! but typically an OUM user might know the Task ID, or part of the Task Name, or maybe they just want to find out if there is any content within OUM that is related to a couple of keys words they have in their mind. Here are three quick tips I give people: 1. Open up one of the OUM Views, then click “Expand All”, and then use your Browser’s search function to locate a key Word. For example, Google Chrome or Internet Explorer: <CTRL> F, then type in a key Word, i.e. Architecture This is fast and easy option to use, but it only searches the current OUM page 2. Use the PDF view of OUM Open up one of the OUM Views, and then click the PDF View button located at the top of the View. Depending on your Browser’s settings, the PDF file will either open up in a new Window, or be saved to your local machine. In either case, once the PDF file is open, you can use the built in PDF search commands to search for key words across a large portion of the OUM Method Pack. This is great option for searching the entire Full Method View of OUM, including linked HTML pages, however the search will not included linked Documents, i.e. Word, Excel. 3. Use your operating systems file index to search for key words This is my favorite option, and one I use virtually every day. I happen to use Windows Search, but you could also use Google Desktop Search, of Finder on a MAC. All you need to do (on a Windows machine) is to make sure your local OUM folder structure is included in the Windows Index. Go to Control Panel, select Indexing Options, and ensure your OUM folder is included in the Index, i.e. C:/METHOD/OM40/OUM_5.6 Once your OUM folders are indexed, just open up Windows Search (or Google Desktop Search) and type in your key worlds, i.e. Unit Testing The reason I use this option the most is because the Search will take place across the entire content of the Indexed folders, included linked files.   • Selecting objects on a 2D map

    I have a object selection function by checking the mouse click and getting the relevant object. How ever there is a rare situation where if one object is partially behind the other then both objects are in the given area so im wondering how I can make the game know which one was selected, as currently my method does not know.   • Moving multiple objects on a map

    I have multiple objects on my isometric game, for example, NPC's doing path finding automatically to walk around the map. Now there could be any number of them from 0 to infinity (hypthetical as no PC could handle that). My question is: is simply looping each one individually the smartest way to animate them all? Surely as the number of units increases you will notice a lag occuring on units near the end of loop still "waiting" for their next animation movement. The alternative is a swarm algorithm to move all objects together. Is that a smarter idea or do both situations apply depending on the circumstances of the game?

  • Do I own copyright of program I made in own time?

    I created a software package that aids electrical engineers with common calculations used on site (substations to be specific). I created the package in my own time, without being asked and without guidance. The package is now widely used within my company and I intend to distribute it nationally. Do I own the copyright? My contract does state that all work produced is theirs, but this was outside of work and outside of my 'scope of work'. My company is mainly a civil and construction company and had no influence in the creation of the program. From comments: This is the paragraph "During the course of your service, you will disclose to the company all information, formulae, processes, inventions or improvements which you have learned, discovered or evolved during the course of your service or in connection with the business of the company and will sign any necessary documents to enable the company to obtain patent protection whether still in the company service or not. " They are taking it seriously and have got their lawyers.

  • Can I dynamicaly size a div based on discreet units and still center? [closed]

    Here's the problem: I have a website I'm working on that, depending on what the user has selected, will pop up a different number of boxes 80px high and 200px wide and currently set to float:left. These boxes are contained within a div that is basically the whole width of the screen minus some 1% margins. So at the moment they all fill in the box and, depending on screen size, occupy a grid of variable height and width. The problem is, if the screen size makes the containing box, say, 700px wide then you end up with 3 boxes per row and a bloody big margin on the right. What I would like to do is center the grid of boxes inside the containing box so that the margins are equal left and right. I suspect this can't be done since it means the containing box needs to set its size by looking both at the size of the user's window as well as the size of its children. It would be easy to do with javascript but I'd prefer not to if that is an option. If it is truly impossible then I will simply script it and let non-js users see a left-justified set of boxes.

  • Can I share data between two users in an ASP.NET Application?

    I have an issue with Roles.IsUserInRole function. It take hell amount of time to just check if the logged-in user is in particular role(typ 3-9 sec). I searched to find a solution and arrived on this but I am not sure If I have fully grasped it. What I got from the above, A new derived class is created. Inside that class, there is a list which retrieves all user at once. The next time you check IsUserInRole, you do not use the actual IsUserInRole method but rather use the one you overrode in your class. Is this the correct description? Am I on track? My question is, can data be share between two different users in ASP.NET application? If yes, will the shared data exist only if there is at least one user logged in. If all users logs out, that shared data is destroyed? My point is this data will be created only one time whenever a user logs in. For all subsequent users they can use this data and check their roles against the list? I need a detailed answer. My application has users and different roles. We are using ASP.NET roles.

  • Disable static content caching in IIS 7

    I'm a developer having what should be a relatively simple problem in IIS 7 on Windows Server 2008 R2. The problem is that IIS 7 is overzealously caching all static content on the server. It's caching all .html and .js content and not noticing when the content changes on disk unless I iisreset. I've tried the following: Deleting the local cache in my browser (I'm 99% positive this is a server caching issue) In IIS Admin in OutputCaching adding an .html extension and unchecking "User mode caching" and unchecking "Kernel-mode caching" In IIS Admin in OutputCaching adding an .html extension and checking "User mode caching" and selecting the radio for "Prevent all caching" In IIS Admin editing Output Cache Feature settings and unchecking "Enable cache" and "Enable kernel cache under OutputCaching. Running "C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\appcmd set config "SharePoint - 80" -section: system.webServer/caching -enabled:false" Looking through applicationHost.config and disabling anything related to caching I could find. Nothing seems to work. I'm getting very frustrated. Can anyone please help?

  • How is this word document encoded?

    Hi all, We have a program that was written for us by a developer that we can no longer contact, the program opens word documents (forms) that we use in our company, you can tell they are Word documents as the 'Word' toolbar displays with this custom program and we can see the .doc files on the hard drive, the Save button is disabled in the program and when we open the .doc files in word the encoding is not standard as the forms are unreadable but look perfect in the custom program. If we can word out how he has done this we can hopefully convert the 100's of forms that we use. One of the .doc files can be download below, I've scanned it for viruses, it's clean.   • How can I recover data from a dmg that cannot mount?

    I backed up a hard drive in a dmg, then reformatted the hard drive. (I had deleted the efi partition before which was preventing me from reinstalling the operation system). When I tried use the restore function in disk utility it gave an input/output error. I get this error with anything I do to the image including mounting, converting, attaching, verifying, scanning, and getting info through hdiutil imageinfo. I have run all of these with hdiutil and the -noverify, -nomount, and -ignorebadchecksums flags. When I copy the image onto another disk/partition I get a different error: something like "No filesystem". I cannot repair the image with disk utility or asr, which both throw the I/O error. When I put the -verbose flag on the command I actually get a different error: "hdiutil: attach failed - No child processes". I have output from both the -verbose and -debug flags but it is fairly long so I had to attach a link to avoid the 3000 character limit. No recovery system can get the data because it is both compressed and unmountable. How can I get the data back, and what has gone wrong? -debug -verbose

  • Socket(TCPIP) Unstable

    I have a setup of a SCPI server in a Win7 PC and have 2 other programs talking to it locally(127.0.0.1) over TCPIP socket 5025 and 5029. This worked well and stable in a fresh PC, but when we moved it into our production lines and the IT dept added their policies and stuff, it became unstable. The PC is connected to the production floor server but both of the programs are running locally in the PC. The connection tends to be disconnected when there is an idle period. And it takes 5-6times to refreshing the connection to get it back. I'm not a programmer myself, so I'm hoping to see if anyone here can help with some answers. Thank you very much!!   • Certain banking pages not loading

    For some unknown reason, I am suddenly unable to access my accounts at several banking and credit sites. I have been a registered user at each site for several years and know I am using the correct user ID and password. Yet, after entering the data, answering security questions, and clicking the submit button, I land on a page with an error message saying their is a technical problem preventing me from accessing my account. On one site, I end up at the sign in page repeatedly. I am never told that my ID/password are incorrect. I believe may be firewall related. Windows firewall was damaged after a recent malware attack. I am now using a third party firewall (Fort Knox). I am not seeing a pop-up indicating sites are blocked or asking me to indicate yes or no. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium. I get the same result regardless of the browser. I switched to Maxthon last night and am getting the same result. This is not happening at other sites. And I am able to access some banking sites normally. This is frustrating because I need to make payments and have gone paperless. Any feedback will be appreciated. ---- Joe ----

  • New 3TB HDD, can see full 2.7TB in Linux and Windows, but shows up as 801.6GB in BIOS

    I recently purchased a Seagate Barracuda 3TB drive (ST3000DM001). After installing it, my BIOS recognized it but reported the size as 801.6gb. I went ahead and booted into Linux anyway (Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit). Linux saw it as a 2.7TB. Following some online instructions (don't have the link handy, unfortunately), it looks liked converting this drive to GPT was recommended. So I used gparted to do that, then formatted it to NTFS also using gparted. (I'm using NTFS because my machine is daul-boot and I want to have access to the drive in Windows too). I rebooted to Windows (Windows 7 64-bit), and Windows also sees the drive with 2.7TB free. Everything seems to be working fine. The only issue is that my BIOS is still reporting the drive as 801.6GB. My motherboard is an ASRock 770 Extreme3 and BIOS is the latest version. Since everything seems to be working with the new drive anyway, I'm hoping that the fact that the BIOS is reporting the wrong size is not an actual problem. But honestly, I don't really know. Anyone out there more familiar with this know if this could potentially cause any problems in the future? Any way to get the BIOS to report the correct size?

  • EFI pxe network boot error

    Asking this on both [serverfault][1] and [superuser][2]. When attempting to network boot RHEL 5.4 on an old ia64 machine I get the following error : ![alt text][3] So I've basically followed the tutorial here : [http://www-uxsup.csx.cam.ac.uk/pub/doc/suse/sles9/adminguide-sles9/ch04s03.html][4] DHCPD,TFTPD etc are already setup and working with standard x86 PXE clients. I've unpacked the boot.img file into /tftpboot/ia64/ and passed the path to the elilo.efi file via DHCP with the filename ""; option. Changing this filename generates a PXE file not found error (see below). So I assume that PXE has found the file... ![alt text][5] The only thing wrong I can find in the logs is : Jan 6 19:49:31 dhcphost in.tftpd[31379]: tftp: client does not accept options Any ideas?   • Wicked VNC Viewer acting out on Windows desktop and CentOS 6.3 server

    What we have here is the only way to open the TightVNC viewer on this Windows XP desktop is to have a TigerVNC viewer open on the CentOS 6.3 server desktop. I know it sounds really weird and we’re looking for hints to make it go away. Any ideas? Here is the recipe: We are using Putty on the Windows desktop as SSH (Secure Shell) and a Terminal Emulator. We open and login to Putty then open a login to TightVNC viewer. After many failed attempts, much Googling, and lots of reading to no avail I decided to open the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 server by way of the GNOME desktop Application menu -- Internet tab. After opening and logging into the TigerVNC viewer on the CentOS 6.3 Server, Voila!! We have a remote desktop opened on the server. But what was an interesting discovery was that the TigerVNC viewer on the server had a request on the desktop that was not on the server desktop. This turned out to be a login request that once the password was entered it opened the TightVNC viewer on the Windows desktop. Weird huh? -Why is that password request showing up on the CentOS 6.3 server in the TigerVNC viewer as oppose to showing up on the Windows desktop when logging in using TightVNC viewer to the server?

  • Need to increase nginx throughput to an upstream unix socket -- linux kernel tuning?

    I am running an nginx server that acts as a proxy to an upstream unix socket, like this: upstream app_server { server unix:/tmp/app.sock fail_timeout=0; } server { listen ###.###.###.###; server_name whatever.server; root /web/root; try_files $uri @app; location @app { proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for; proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme; proxy_set_header Host $http_host; proxy_redirect off; proxy_pass http://app_server; } } Some app server processes, in turn, pull requests off /tmp/app.sock as they become available. The particular app server in use here is Unicorn, but I don't think that's relevant to this question. The issue is, it just seems that past a certain amount of load, nginx can't get requests through the socket at a fast enough rate. It doesn't matter how many app server processes I set up, it doesn't even matter what the app is (tried it with a dummy app with just a single endpoint that returned an empty page with status 404). The bottleneck seems to be the socket, not the app. I'm getting a flood of these messages in the nginx error log: connect() to unix:/tmp/app.sock failed (11: Resource temporarily unavailable) while connecting to upstream Many requests result in status code 502, and those that don't take a long time to complete. The nginx write queue stat hovers around 1000. Anyway, I feel like I'm missing something obvious here, because this particular configuration of nginx and app server is pretty common, especially with Unicorn (it's the recommended method in fact). Are there any linux kernel options that needs to be set, or something in nginx? Any ideas about how to increase the throughput to the upstream socket? Something that I'm clearly doing wrong?   • MySQL: Replicating the MySQL database

    Hi guys, I have a primary write server (server1) which replications to two servers (server2 and server3) which are query servers. I am replicating all databases to these servers including the MySQL database. When i execute a GRANT as follows replication works perfectly.. GRANT execute,select ON database1.* TO `user1`@`host` IDENTIFIED BY 'password'; However if i did the same GRANT to alter permissions on an existing user without IDENTIFIED clause replication breaks.. Error 'Can't find any matching row in the user table' on query. Default database: 'mysql'. Query: 'GRANT execute,select ON database1.* TO `user`@`host`' If I try and run the query manually i get the same error..   • connecting two routers

    I have two routers, both wireless, that i wish to connect together. As it stands Router A is connected via a micro filter into the phone line which i access the web wirelessly. What I want to achieve is to connect Router B to A so I can hardwire My TV and Sky (cable) Box into B and simultaneously browse the web wirelessly via router A. Is this possible? If so I'd appreciate the help on this one to save me running 50ft cable under the carpet!!! PS I'm using Mac OS.

  • CheckPoint/Amazon VPC VPN tunnel working inconsistently

    First time poster, so please be gentle and correct me if there's Server Fault etiquette I'm missing. We have two CheckPoint edge devices at sites A & B, independently managed, connecting to two Amazon private clouds. In both cases, the two Amazon VPCs are in the same community on the CheckPoint device. A VPN tunnel exists between the two CheckPoint devices as well. Between Sites A & B and the Amazon VPC in Northern Virigina, we are unable to keep more than one tunnel up. Both will come up, but tunnel 2 will drop an hour after initiation and will not come back up while tunnel 1 is up. We believe the 1-hour period is due to IPsec phase 2 renegotiation, but can't be sure. On our side, we see the tunnel 2 remote endpoint as not responding to phase 2 negotiation. Between Sites A & B and the Amazon VPC in Oregon, we have no issues. Both tunnels are up and fail over properly. The CheckPoint gateways are using domain-based VPNs. According to CheckPoint's advice to Amazon, this won't work. Yet, in Oregon, it does. We've pursued this with Amazon and, despite the fact it's working in Oregon, they've refused to troubleshoot with us further. Can anyone suggest anything we can do to try to get this stabilized? Going to route-based VPNs is not an option for us.

    for Windows 7 Home Edition: can anyone recommend a tool to monitor network traffic? either build-in or 3rd-party. I like to have a graph view (e.g. as in Task Manager) but also nice are tool that lets me see what IP/port that's incoming/outgoing. Command line is fine. Or even some tutorial. Thanks. (am old unix sys admin and web app dev. Though not much of a network admin and don't know much Windows. I need this tool just for my home PC, not in any pro capacity.)
