  On my dell laptop, running with windows 7, I installed Ubuntu 12. I used it for sometime, then i re-started to switch to windows. First time it got boot up with windows but then it got hanged. I re-started again and then blank screen with blinking cursor came and beep sounds also started to came. I read in few forums and this seems like a common issue with Ubuntu. I tried using the bootable USB for both windows 7 and Ubuntu but none of these are even getting detected. Please let me know if any of know the work-around. • Sound plays from laptop speakers only even when headphones are connected

  I'm using a Dell Vostro 1014 laptop with Ubuntu 11.10. From the time I had Ubuntu 9.04, sound comes from the laptop speakers only even when I plug in earphones or external speakers. Also, if an external microphone plugged in, it does not work. Dell even replaced my motherboard to check for hardware issues but the problem persists. So it is definitely not a hardware issue. The sound plays perfectly through the headphones in the pre-boot diagnostics. So I figure, this must be a problem with Ubuntu not recognizing my sound card. Please try to give a solution for this problem.

  I've tried several solutions I found on the web, but didn't manage to solve a problem. Since today my laptop won't find my WiFi network, but neighbours' networks are suggested. Another laptop with U12.04 does find one. What do I do? • Unable to connect to wireless network

  A real newbie here. Just downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, put on USB stick and have booted it on my other PC after modifying the boot sequence to boot from USB before hard drive where Windows XP lives. Have no problems with Windows and my wireless but not with Ubuntu. The PC is a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. According to Windows XP , the wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1490 Dual Band WLAN Mini-Card, my IP address is 192.168.0.193, subnet mask is 255.255.255.0, assigned by DHCP, SSID is HOME , type 802.11 and default gateway is 192.168.0.1. Ok, back to booting from USB and TRY option, I am Editing Network connections, I have created/configured "Wireless connection 1" with SSID of HOME and the only other thing I have changed is on the "Editing IPV4 routes for Wireless connection 1 I have enterred 192.168.0.193 , netmask 255.255.255.0 and gateway 192.168.0.1 Anyways , no go.   I'm running Ubuntu 12.04. Today I just purchased a second monitor (I have a Dell U2711 and a 42-inch Sony TV). I'm running the 295.49 proprietary nVidia graphics driver, my graphics card is a GeForce GTX 460. I am not able to activate "xinerama" with "separate X screens", not sure why. I am able to use TwinView. This works, although it results in severe tearing on the Sony TV. It's as though "sync to vblank" isn't working (I have this set in Compiz and in the nVidia settings). If I disable the Dell U2711 and only use the Sony, everything works fine, zero tearing. Is it the case that "sync to vblank" can only work on a single monitor in Ubuntu 12.04? Is there any way to get rid of the tearing on the second monitor in TwinView mode?

I know of system76, but are there any other manufacturers making laptops built to run a standard build of Ubuntu? I'm not counting Dell, as - from my experience - their 'Ubuntu' laptops/netbooks require their build, and because of that have their own set of compatibility issues. UPDATE: And as mentioned in the comments, Dell is no longer selling systems with Ubuntu to consumers.

• DVC101 Video Capture Device on USB hub - Ubuntu Server 12.04

  I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop I use as a media server/video capture system. It only has 2 USB ports and I have a total of 3 devices I need to connect. The DVC101 works perfectly while plugged directly into the USB port in back of the laptop. Unfortunately it does not get recognized when plugged into a passive or powered USB hub. Questions: Is there something I am missing on the Ubuntu side? Something I need to do that will allow the device to be recognized through the hub? If not, will the extra USB ports on a dell laptop dock (port replicator) act the same as the aftermarket hubs? I know this one is off topic of Ubuntu but any input appreciated.

• 12.04 LTS won't install from CD

  I've been trying to install 12.04 LTS onto a Dell with a PIII from CD. Booting from the CD the install gets through the "Who are you" process, begins copying files. The progress bar gets as far as the last period in "Copying files...". The box clears, and an error box comes up "The installer has encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigae the problem or try installing again." When I try to install from this desktop session, the install gets to the same point, the copying files box closes, and then just stops. The pointer is busy, the cd drive spins up occaisonally with no data transfer, no hard drive activity. When I boot from the CD and access the disk boot menu, the disk checks good, memory checks good ( I upgraded the original memory to 512 mb). I also updated the bios to the newest from Dell. This is an older L866r, but should meet the requirements.

  I have a dell inspiron 5520. I had installed windows 8 and have ubuntu 12.04 installed in a different partition. I installed grub but it was not showing windows 8. So i added menuentry "Windows 8" { set root = "(hd0,4)" chainloader +1 } in /etc/grub.d/40_custom. Now i see windows 8 option but it says "error-invalid selection" when i select it. please help.   I am new to Ubuntu, recently I installed ubuntu 12.04 in Vm Player (Virtual Machine) on my Dell laptop having windows 7 ultimate 32 bit for just to check the security of my wireless network and want to crack the WiFi (WPA-PSK) password but in ubuntu it does not show the wireless network it shows the 2 arrow sign as i have not connect the ethernet cable to my laptop and connected through WiFi on my main OS (windows 7) but it shows the wired network and internet is working but it does not show wifi connection. On windows 7 WiFi is connected and showing the WiFi connection and working correctly.But my main motive is to crack the WiFi password as it can't detect WiFi network so what to do?   I just installed ubuntu. things seems great but I have no sound. When I go to the settings menu I chose from various setup. I found one that work which had 4 speakers a subwofer and a front speaker. When I test it the sound works fine. However, when I try playing an *.mp3 file or try to watch a video on you tube I get no sound at all. I have a dual boot with windows XP and there is no problem in windows at all. Below is my setup. • Strange problem of wifi keeps droping every minute on Ubuntu 12.04

  I am running ubuntu 12.04 on my samsung laptop but the wifi connection keeps dropping every minute. I have another dell laptop which also has ubuntu 12.04 but wifi works fine on that. And if I use my samsung laptop at office as its my office laptop wifi works fine. So, I don't understand what the problem is. I have googled it and found solution like set ignoring IPv6 setting but that still does not make any difference. So I don't understand where the problem is if its with my network provider or its with my laptop. I can't blame my network provider as wifi works fine on my other devices including Ipad, mobiles and dell laptop. Even I can't say clearly that its problem with my laptop as wifi works fine in my office. Previously I had ubuntu 13.04 on my samsung laptop and I was having the same issue so I uninstall it and install 12.04 and issues is still the same.

  I have two NVidia graphics cards: Quadro NVS 295 (PCI Express, dual DisplayPort outputs) GeForce FX 5200 (PCI, DVI and VGA outputs) I have three identical monitors, two on DisplayPort and one on DVI. I'm on Ubuntu Hardy (and cannot currently dist-upgrade for separate reasons). I use the "nvidia" driver. What's new is the GeForce card and the third monitor. I currently have the dual DisplayPort monitors working fine. • Slow VM on esxi 4.1

  We have a FreeBSD 64bit running on a esxi 4.1, the hardware platform is a DELL R710 with 2 x 56xx (intel 6core cpu) and 48 GB ram. The FreeBSD vm is very slow, when we compiles/builds something on it, it takes 5 minuts and it says "build time 18 seconds.". There's no vmtools installed on the vm. The same vm is installaed on another R710 running esxi 4.0 for dell and there's no problems with that one. Does anyone have any idea about what to look for? the VMs on the second server (ESXi 4.1) is a clone of the VMs running on the first VMserver (ESXi 4.0 Dell edition). It's not possible for me to move the VM back to the first server since the file contaning the vm is too big. We installed the new esxi with a datasore with 8mb blocks because 1mb blocks dident allow for the file size we needed. It looks like the www server on the new ESXi 4.1 works fine, but I havent really tested it. There's not installed vmtools on any of the VMs (FreeBSD). The block size on the second VM (ESXi 4.1) datastorage is 8mb and 1mb on the first (ESXi 4.0)

  Will this increase my Virtual private Server failing rate if i :- install Microsoft Window Server 2008 Enterprise install SQL server enterprise 2008 install IIS 7.5 install ASP.Net Mvc 2 install Microsoft Exchange << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? install Team foundation server << should live inside MWS2008 ? or standalone without OS? on one mini VPS with specification of DELL Poweredge R710 shared plan DDR3 ECC RAMs 16GB and -- 1GB for this VPS using DELL PERC 6i raid controller (this thing alone about 1.5k-2k) and the SAS HDD (15K RPM) (146GB) -- 33GB to this VPS each hdd is freaking fast over 300MB read / write possible with proper tuning the motherboard is a DELL and it has twin redundant PSU (870watt 85%eff) its running on Intel Xeon 5502 (Quad Core) x2 so about 8 physical proc (fairly share) is there any ruler to measure for this about one VPS can only install what what what service ? because of my resource is limited =.@ may i know if it is install in this way,maybe it seem like defeat the way of "VPS"... what will happen ? or any guideline on this issue (fully configuring the window server 2008 R2) ? • Computer Comparison - which is "better"

  A company I work with recently replaced their old server and gave it to me. Their old server is a Dell PowerEdge 2600. I've been playing with the machine and even installed Windows Server 2008 on it...and it seems to run it pretty well. Here are the specs for the two machines: Dev Machine: AMD Athlon64 3000+ 2.38 GHz (overclocked from 1.8GHz [@ 280x8.5] - it is stable-ish) Memory (RAM): 1x1GB OCZ PC3200 (Dual-Channel) 300GB HD OS: Windows XP Pro (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 40 seconds Dell PowerEdge 2600 Server: Intel Xeon CPU 2.8GHz 2.8GHz Memory (RAM): 512MBx2 (PC2700, not dual channel) 68GB HD (RAID 5) OS: Windows Server 2000 (32bit) SuperPi 1M digit test: 56 seconds [using 1 processor] (Themes and Aero-Flass UI turned off, of course) I use my computer to regularly run Photoshop CS5, Illustrator CS5, Flash CS5, 5 browsers (Chrome, FF, IE, Safari, Opera), iTunes, Visual Studio 2010, and Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 [sometimes simultaneously :-) ]. The SuperPi test has my dev machine coming in about 30% faster than the Server machine...though this could be due to the server running "Vista" with background processes prioritized. Do you think it would be realistic/advantageous for me to move from my dev machine to the Dell PowerEdge 2600? Is it possible to install additional DVD drives/burners on the server? Can I install my internal 300 GB hard drive on the server? Can I add some USB 2.0 ports? Note: I'll probably install Win XP Pro on the dev machine if I do switch. If not, are there any creative and useful way for me to take advantage of this server (with the goal of faster computing)?
