  So it’s been a really long time since I consistently blogged on my previous ASP.NET blog (and, let’s be honest, it wasn’t that consistent to begin with!)  With the mainstream use of microblogging sites like Facebook and Twitter, I’ve been able to post more frequent updates (http://www.facebook.com/scott.vanvliet & http://twitter.com/scottvanvliet) but haven’t really authored any good content lately. Well, I decided it’s time for me to try again! • Kansas City Developer's Conference

  I just found about about / registered for Saturday’s Kansas City Developer’s Conference, and am going to make the drive over from the right side of the state (Hey, no offense, KC – I’m just looking at a map, and St. Louis is on the right side, Kansas City’s on the left). (I’m sure the event’s been mentioned on geekswithblogs several times, but I’m on a “staycation” this week, getting cabin fever, and noticed @leebrandt’s tweet today.) I’m looking forward to some of the presentations in the Agile and Patterns tracks. I’m going to have to get up pretty early Saturday morning to descend from St. Louis to Kansas City (Again, no offense – St. Louis is just at a higher elevation*, that’s all), so if you see a tired-looking guy wandering around wearing a St. Louis Day of .NET shirt, please be nice. • Blog comment spammers &hellip; help!

  Hey, I need some advice/help, now I’ve been writing on this blog for a few years, I don’t blog a great deal in comparison to many of my peers and my blog doesn’t get a massive number of hits, BUT I seem to get a fair share of comments spammers!! I have an image verification on the comments and I have put an Akismet API key into the Geekswithblogs settings, but I still get a bunch of spam comments. They could almost be real, until you see the link going off to some dating site or casino crap. What does everyone do?? Delete them every time?? Moderate comments?? I would rather not moderate comments if possible, but is that the only way to stop the crap?? Thx Technorati Tags: spammers,comments,help

• Loops, Recursion and Memoization in JavaScript

For example, 5! = 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 120. The value of 0! is 1. We can use factorials to demonstrate iterative loops and recursive functions in JavaScript.  Here is a function that computes the factorial using a for loop: Output: Time Taken: 51 ms Here is the factorial function coded to be called recursively: Output: Time Taken: 165 ms We can speed up the recursive function with the use of memoization.  Hence,  if the value has previously been computed, it is simply returned and the recursive call ends. Output: Time Taken: 17 ms

• Great User Group if based near Gloucester + Links from Entity Framework 4.0 session

  I had a really fun evening doing “my final” EF 4.0 session last night (26th May 2010) at GL.NET based out of Gloucester (although secretly I made it into a IronRuby and Windows Azure session). They are a great crowd and Jimmy makes for a fantastic host + it is a very nice venue (Symantec offices in Gloucester, lots of parking, good room etc) + free pizza + free SWAG + trip to pub afterwards (the topics were very varied!). What more could you ask for? The next session is June 16th and will be on multi-tenanted ASP.NET MVC and comes highly recommended. • KnockoutJS 2.3.0 - Uncaught Error: You cannot apply bindings multiple times to the same element.

I had some dynamically added DOM elements and re-applying bindings worked before. It always seemed like a workaround/hack, but now Knockout is telling me that I shouldn’t do it. The quick way to fix this is to use ko.cleanNode($(‘#id’) and this works. A different/possibly better way, as suggested by x0n might be to use templates and Knockout’s template binding (<script type=’text/html’>…</script>).   Thanks again to the StackOverflow community for quickly providing me with the solution. This may happen if you have a set of NuGet packages, and you either just restore them, or delete them on disk and then restore again.  Your code ends up looking like this, note the red missing functions, which comes from the Moq library - which is downloaded from NuGet:   while the Build is still fine, it compiles without any errors: This stackoverflow question gives some different approaches to solve this, but my experience have been that the Resharper Suspend-Resume trick most often solves the issue: In Visual Studio:  Go to Tools/Options/Resharper Press Suspend: When this is done the error markers disappear, since ReSharper now is inactive. In each case I asked two questions:Can you provide me with a fixed IP Address?Is the equipment to be provided compatible with IPv6?None of the question was satisfactorily answered. One of the persons answering even suggested that granting a fixed IP Address would be a breach of security!I find it very disturbing that two companies that present themselves as innovative should still not be preparing for IPv6. The answer I would have expected was that all new equipment being supplied was IPv6 compatible and that plans were in hand for a switchover to IPv6. Instead new equipment would be supplied that would have to be replaced when IPv6 comes. Equally disturbing was that the call center people who answered did not know why a fixed IP address was important or why the change to IPv6 would have to come.I would rather not name and shame the two companies, however I will be looking elsewhere for my next Internet Service Provider.

I attended sessions on Apache Cassandra by Dr. Dave King (@tildedave), Angular JS by Kevin Israel (@kevadev), and JavaScript for Object-Oriented Programmers by Joel Cochran (@joelcochran).  I regret I was unable to attend all the sessions. So I went back and noticed that there’s a “Download and Install Manually” link towards the bottom of the page, which will let you download the .XAP file directly. So I emailed myself the link, opened it on my phone, and voila – Vine is now installed! What’s the point of limiting apps by region if we can just manually download and install the file anyway? • Simple solution now to a problem from 8 years ago. Use SQL windowing function

We had to find the top 5 donor per month and send out some awards. The SQL we came up with was clunky and had lots of limitation (can only do one year at a time), then switch the where clause and go again. Fast forward 8 years, I got a similar problem where we had to find the top 3 combination of 2 fields for every single day. And the solution is this elegant: SELECT CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) AS "RecordDate" , status_cd , nbr , COUNT(*) AS occurance , ROW_NUMBER() OVER (PARTITION BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) ORDER BY COUNT(*) DESC) RowNum FROM table1 WHERE RowNum < 4 GROUP BY CAST(eff_dt AS DATE) , status_cd , nbr If only I had this 8 years ago. :) Life is good now!

I’ve watched a lot of sessions from the major conferences that include .NET material, and NDC consistently has the best presentations in my opinion. There are lots of my favorite speakers: Crockford, Uncle Bob, Damian Edwards, Venkat Subramanian, Hanselman (I’m interested in seeing if he still thinks “poop” is funny, or got that out of his system at TechEd ;), Cory House (hey, KC!), the .NET Rocks Guys and more, so check it out!
