• What do I need to do to make sure my app launches as Admin?

  I'm writing an app that allows you to script the buttons from a wiimote into actions on your PC. It currently supports all of the features of the main remote control, except for the speaker. Now, I'm running in to trouble when I run it on Vista with UAC turned on. Any time a UAC'd window has focus, my app fails to move the mouse successfully. For instance, when an installer is run, I have to navigate it with the keyboard. Will running the app as administrator solve my problem? (At one point in time, I was able to successfully move the mouse over a UAC-password-entry box) How do I build a manifest that will tell windows to "run as administrator"? How do I embed this manifest into my app, if I'm strongly naming my assembly? How do I sign my application with an Authenticode cert? EDIT: Ok, so after some more extensive research, I have found: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb756929.aspx <requestedExecutionLevel level="asInvoker|highestAvailable|requireAdministrator" uiAccess="true|false"/> However, the article says: Applications with the uiAccess flag set to true must be Authenticode signed to start properly. In addition, the application must reside in a protected location in the file system. \Program Files\ and \windows\system32\ are currently the two allowable protected locations.   I'm getting an error when trying to activate a webpart. It activates fine in one setup , but fails in a different one. Administrator in both. • Sql Server Backup and move backup file: How to cope with file permissions?

  With our product we have a simple backup tool for the sql server database. This tool should just make a full backup and restore to and from any folder. Of course, the user (usually an administrator) needs permission to write to the target folder. To avoid the problem of not being able to perform a backup to a network drive, I write the backup to a temp file in the Sql Server backup directory. Then I move it to the target folder. This requires permission to delete the temporary file from the sql servers backup folder. Restore is the same in the other direction. This seemed to work fine until someone tested it on vista, where the user does not have write access to the backup folder by default. So there are many solutions to solve this, but none of them seemed to be really nice. One solution would be to find another folder for the temporary file. Both the sql server user as well as the administrator performing the backup need read and write permissions. Is there such a directory? Any other ideas? Thanks a lot.

The database connection string, including a generic user/pass, is placed in a NHibernate configuration file, which lies in the same directory as the exe file. Now I have this issue: The user that runs the application should not get to know the username/password of the general database user because I don't want him to rummage around in the database directly. Alternatively I could hardcode the connection string, which is bad because the administrator must be able to change it if the database is moved or if he wants to switch between dev/test/prod environments. So long I've found three possibilities: The first referenced question was generally answered by making the file only readable for the user that runs the application. But that's not not enough in my case (the user running the application is a person. The database user/pass are general and shouldn't even be accessible by the person.) The first answer additionally proposed to encrypt the connection data before writing it to the file. With this approach, the administrator is not able anymore to configure the connection string because he cannot encrypt it by hand. The second referenced question provides an approach for this very scenario but it seems very complicated. My questions to you: This is a very general issue, so isn't there any general "how-to-do-it" way, somehow a "design pattern"? Is there some support in .NET's config infrastructure? (optional, maybe out of scope) Can I combine that easily with the NHibernate configuration mechanism?

• "ImportError: cannot import name Exchange" when using Celery w/ Kombu installed

  I'm trying to create a Celery worker node on an Amazon EC2 Windows2008 R2 instance. Due to a plugin we require for another Python module, we are required to user Python3. I've installed Python3.2 and necessary modules and run Celery, but for some reason it states that it can't import Exchange and Queue from Kombu, despite the face that Kombu is installed and can be imported by python. • Sharepoint user details not visible to other users

  I am managing a SharePoint site that uses Form Based Authentication. We have several generic lists, document libraries and active task lists that users can create update and delete. Users can use the people pickers to select/search for everyone. But the users cannot see other users names, email addresses etc. in display lists or the people pickers. If I log in as the site collection administrator, I can see everyones details. So I know the data is available. Updated details on this problem (non-administrators) SharePoint users cannot see other users information. Example: User A assigns a task to user B. User A creates a new task and uses the people picker to find user B. User B is only visible by the login name “bname” and any information about user B is not visible or searchable within the people picker. Once user B is assigned the task, user A no longer sees the name in the task list – even though user A created it. No modified by, created by, assigned to or owner field data is visible to non-administrator users. Facts: Extranet site is configured to use Forms Based Authentication. • Getting a list of Tasks that belong to a Role from Azman

  I'm using the AZROLESLib which is from the COM references "azroles 1.0 Type Library" and I am trying to create a list of the designated tasks for each role that I have currently set in my authorization manager but when I loop through the tasks for the role, I get the role name. I've looked all around but couldn't find anything that would help. Here's what I got currently (It's not super pretty but i'm just trying to get it working at the moment). • Runing bcdedit from python in Windows 2008 SP2

  I do not know windows well, so that may explain my dilemma ... I am trying to run bcdedit in Windows 2008R2 from Python 2.6. But when I run it from Python (as Administrator), Python claims it can't find the command, returning: bcdedit is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file Also, if I trying running my batch file from Python (which works from the command line), it also fails. I've also tried it with the full path to bcdedit, with the same results. What is it about calling bcdedit from Python that makes it not found? Note that I can call other EXE files from Python, so I have some level of confidence that my Python code is sane ... but who knows. Any help would be most appreciated.

  Hey everybody, I'm currently re-writing a class which handles xml files. Depending on the xml file and it's structure I sometimes need to merge objects. Lets say once I have this: <page name="a title"/> And another time I have this: <page name="a title"> <permission>administrator</permission> </page> Before, I needed only the attributes from the "page" element. That's why a lot of my code expects an object containing only the attributes ($loadedXml-attributes()). Now there are xml files in which the <permission> element is required. I did manage to merge the objects (though not as I wanted) but I can't get to access one of them (most probably it's something I'm missing). To merge my objects I used this code: (object) array_merge( (array) $loadedXml->attributes(), (array) $loadedXml->children() ); This is what I get from print_r(): stdClass Object ( [@attributes] => Array ( [name] => a title ) [permission] => Array ( [0] => administrator ) ) So now my question is how to access the @attributes method ?   I am trying to configure my SQL Server to use Kerberos authentication. My setup is like this - My setup is like this- I have 2 virtual PCs in a Windows XP Pro SP3 host. Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and the SQL Server default instance is also running on this VPC. The second VPC is the domain member and it acts as the SQL Server client machine. I configured the SPN on the SQL Server service account to get the Kerberos working. On the client VPC it seems like it is using Kerberos authentication (as desired)- C:\Documents and Settings\administrator.SHAREPOINTSVC>sqlcmd -S vm-winsrvr2003 1> select auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections where session_id=@@spid 2> go auth_scheme ---------------------------------------- KERBEROS (1 rows affected) 1> but on the server computer (where the SQL Server instance is actually running) it looks like it is still using NTLM authentication- . This is not a remote instance, the sql server is local to this machine. C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>sqlcmd 1> select auth_scheme from sys.dm_exec_connections where session_id=@@spid 2> go auth_scheme ---------------------------------------- NTLM (1 rows affected) 1> What can i do so that it uses Kerberos on the server computer as well ?   Hello, We have to learn VB.NET for the semester, my experience lies mainly with C# - not that this should make a difference to this particular problem. I've used just about the most simple way to save a file using the .NET framework, but Windows 7 won't let me save the file anywhere (or anywhere that I have found yet). Here is the code I am using to save a text file. Dim dialog As FolderBrowserDialog = New FolderBrowserDialog() Dim saveLocation As String = dialog.SelectedPath ... Build up output string ... Please try saving somewhere different.", "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error) Catch Ex As Exception ' Catch any exceptions that occured when trying to write the file. MessageBox.Show("Writing the file was not successful.", "Error", MessageBoxButtons.OK, MessageBoxIcon.Error) End Try The problem is that this using this code throws an UnauthorizedAccessException no matter where I try to save the file. I've tried running the .exe file as administrator, and the IDE as administrator. Is this just Windows 7 being overprotective? And if so, what can I do to solve this problem? • What files does JDIC need to run?

  I'm trying to call JDIC from my application, but I can't get it to run. What files do I need and where? From what I've been able to gather from their site, I basically need to put jdic.jar in classpath... however there is also a lib folder with jdic.jar with a bit different size, and jdic_native_applet.jar, jdic_stub_unix.jar, jdic_stub_windows.jar and several folders with what I gather are platform specific files. I get this exception when instantiating AssociationService: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.jdesktop.jdic.filetypes.internal.AppAssociationReaderFactory_windows at java.net.URLClassLoader$1.run(URLClassLoader.java:200) at java.security.AccessController.doPrivileged(Native Method) at java.net.URLClassLoader.findClass(URLClassLoader.java:188) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:307) at sun.misc.Launcher$AppClassLoader.loadClass(Launcher.java:301) at java.lang.ClassLoader.loadClass(ClassLoader.java:252) at org.jdesktop.jdic.filetypes.AssociationService.<init>(Unknown Source) at QuickTest.main(QuickTest.java:101) I've tried last "official" release and last alpha release. I'm running Java 6 and Win7 64bit. Does JDIC even work under Win7 (or 64bit, although I use 32bit Java)? I see no release after 2006, and no activity in the project after about 2008... while Win7 came in 2009. I know that parts of JDIC, like Desktop, were included in Java 6, however that doesn't seem to be the case with file associations. And if it doesn't, are there any (hopefully cross-platform) alternatives for managing file associations? There are some things for Windows only that I tried, but that requires running native commands with administrator privileges which I don't know how to pull, apart from asking user to run my app as administrator and then use Runtime.exec()... If there are no alternatives to JDIC, I'm interested if anyone has managed to handle file associations well with cross-platform installers?

• Windows Server 2008 R2 File Permissions

  I’m having some problems understanding some particular file permissions behaviour. Here are the steps to reproduce: Log into the server using the default Administrator account Create a text file (testfile.txt) in C:\ProgramData containing some arbitrary text Create a new user account and make it a member of the Administrators group Log in using new account and open C:\ProgramData\testfile.txt Edit the text and try to save Upon clicking save I’m presented with the save as dialog, which indicates that i do not have the necessary permissions to edit the file. This seems odd considering that the new user account is a member of Administrators. When I view the permissions of the file I can see the there are three groups listed, System, Administrators and Users. SYSTEM and Administrators have full permissions, however, Users only has the Read & Execute and Read permissions checked. It would appear that when I open the testfile.txt from the new users account, it opens in the context of the Users group, despite being a member of Administrators, is this correct? It would certainly explain the behaviour. The reason that this is an issue for me is that if I deploy an application via 'Run as Administrator', will normal users be able to edit the text files I install to ProgramData. Is this behaviour confined to Windows server or is it the same in Vista and Win7.

• Redeploying an ASP.NET site in IIS7 without files in use interfering

  Hey, We've got a process currently which causes ASP.NET websites to be redeployed. The code is itself an ASP.NET application. The current method, which has worked for quite a while, is simply to loop over all the files in one folder and copy them over the top of the files in the webroot. The problem that's arisen is that occasionally files end up being in use and hence can't be copied over. This has in the past been intermittent to the point it didn't matter but on some of our higher traffic sites it happens the majority of the time now. I'm wondering if anyone has a workaround or alternative approach to this that I haven't thought of. Currently my ideas are: Simply retry each file until it works. That's going to cause errors for a short time though which isn't really that good. Deploy to a new folder and update IIS's webroot to the new folder. I'm not sure how to do this short of running the application as an administrator and running batch files, which is very untidy. • Struts2 Hibernate Login with User table and group table

  My problem is, i have a table User and Table Group (this table use to authorization for user - it mean when user belong to a group like admin, they can login into admincp and other user belong to group member, they just only read and write and can not login into admincp) each user maybe belong to many groups and each group has been contain many users and they have relationship are many to many I use hibernate for persistence storage. and struts 2 to handle business logic. When i want to implement login action from Struts2 how can i get value of group member belong to ? to compare with value i want to know? • Why can’t PHP script write a file on server 2008 via command line or task scheduler?

It runs well when I use a browser. It writes an XML file in the same directory. The script takes ~60 seconds to run, and the resulting XML file is ~16 MB. I am running PHP 5.2.13 via FastCGI on Windows Server Web edition SP1 64 bit. The code pulls inventory from SQL server, runs a loop to build an XML file for a third party. I created a task in task scheduler to run c:\php5\php.exe "D:\inetpub\tools\build.php" The task scheduler shows a time lapse of about a minute, which is how long the script takes to run in a browser. No error returned, but no file created. Each time I make a change to the scheduled task properties, a user password box comes up and I enter the administrator account password. If I run this same path and argument at a command line it does not error and does not create the file. When I right click run command prompt as an administrator, the file is still not created. I get my echo statement "file published" that is after the file creation and no error is returned. I am doing a simple fopen fwrite fclose to save the contents of a php variable to a .xml file, and the file only gets created when the script is run through the browser.   Hi all, Is it possible to delete-protect a file/folder using Registry or using a custom written Windows Service in C#? Using Folder Permissions it is possible, but i am looking for a solution that even restricts the admin from deleting specific folders. The requirement is that the administrator must not be easily track the nature of protection and/or may not be able to avert it easily. Obviously all administrators will be able to revert the procedure if the technique is clearly understood. Like folder Permissions/OwnerShip Settings can easily be reset by an administrator. SO that is not an option. Folder protection software can easily be uninstalled and show clear indication that a particular folder is protected by some special kind of software. SO that too is not an option. Most antivirus programs protect folders and files in Program Dir. Windows itself doesnt allow certain files such as registry files in c:\windows\system32\config to not even copied. Such a protection is desired for folders which allowse to read and write to files but not allow deletion. Similar functionality is desired. The protection has to seemless and invisible. I do not want to use any protection features like FolderLock and Invisible secrets/PC Security and Desktop password etc. Moreover, the solution has to be something other than folder encryption. The solution has to be OS-native so ** that it may implemented ** pro grammatically using C#/VB.Net. Please help. Thanks

• Cant install .NET application in Clients PC

  Hello all, My client's PC runs Windows 7 Ultimate with .netframework 4 client profile. I am unable to install my application developed in VS2008. I tried uninstalling .NET Framework 4 From his PC and running the Clean up tool provided by Microsoft. But still I am unable to install it successfully. It provides Error 1001. I tried running the program as administrator. I also tried to Turn on .net 3.5 feature from add or remove program. Thanks in advance. :) Edit: The error what i get is shown here. Furthermore, I have confirmed that it is a 32bit processor and i run x86 release version of setup The application is developed in a Windows 7 OS with .NET Framework 3.5 I have installed this application in 7 PCs which have .NET 3.5 installed in them and having OS Windows XP,Vista and Windows 7; and all are working fine. In clients PC, when I try to install .NET 3.5 again, the installer starts but then it disappears suddenly without doing anything I have tried turning on .NET 3.5 framework feature from control panel Program and Features. I have tried running the program as Administrator I have tried setting the application setup in Windows XP and Vista compatible mode. But still the issue persists. Thanks :)

  Hi I am completely new to programming. And please someone help me. I am trying to start a pocess from a service. I need to start the new process by prompting user to enter admin credentials. I was trying to use CreateProcessWithLogonW(). Am I using the right function. I tried to give input username, password, domain as localhost. I gave full pathe to the .exe file that i need to start. Here is the piece of code. CreateProcessWithLogonW(L"Administrator", L"localhost", L"password", 0, NULL, L"c:\myupdates\myapp.exe", NORMAL_PRIORITY_CLASS | CREATE_CONSOLE, NULL, NULL, &si, &pi); Si.cb = sizeof(si); Si.lpDesktop = L"winsta0\\default"; But the process never started. Can you guys tell me what I am doing wrong. And what do I need to do to promt user to enter credentials of administrator instead of hardcoding it.

• NServiceBus & MSMQ: How To Change the Default Permissions on the Queue?

  My team is on our first attempt at using NServiceBus (v2.0), using MSMQ as the backing storage. We're getting stuck on queue permissions. We're using it in a Web Forms application, where the user account the website runs under is not an administrator on the machine. When NServiceBus creates the MSMQ queue, it gives the local administrators group full control, and the local everyone and anonymous groups permissions to send messages. But then later, as part of initializing the queue, NServiceBus tries to read all of its messages. That's where we run into the permissions error. Since the website isn't running as an administrator, it's not allowed to read messages. How are other people dealing with this? Do your applications run as administrators? Or do you create the MSMQ queue in your code first, giving it the permissions you need, so that NServiceBus doesn't have to create it? Or is there a bit of configuration we're missing? Or are we likely writing our code that uses NServiceBus incorrectly to be running into this?

• HTTP 401.3 when PUT, DELETE to ADO.NET Data Service (.svc)

  I have an ADO.NET Data Service (we'll call it service.svc). When I deploy it to an IIS 6 site with Integrated Windows Authentication turned on, all requests (GET, POST, PUT, and DELETE) work fine for me, because I am an administrator on the box. However, when a non-admin user hits the service, only GET and POST requests work. When they try a PUT or DELETE request, they get an HTTP 401.3 "Access is Denied" error: "Error message 401.3: You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied (access denied due to Access Control Lists). Ask the web server's administrator to give you access to '...\service.svc'." If I give the "Authenticated Users" local group write access to the .svc file, everything works as it should, but I really don't want to do this (and don't think I should have to do this to get this to work). In fact, I'm confused as to why changing the file permissions would affect this at all, but it definitely seems to be the problem. I've found a couple of different suggestions to fix somewhat similar problems in the Microsoft forums (Here, and I would post more links, but am being told that new users can only post one link in a post), but none of the solutions help. Any help is much appreciated. I am certainly no IIS expert, and this one has got me stumped.

• Laravel4: Checking many-to-many relationship attribute even when it does not exist

  This is my first time with Laravel and also Stackoverflow... I am developing a simple course management system. The main objects are User and Course, with a many-to-many relationship between them. The pivot table has an additional attribute, participant_role, which defines whether the user is a student or an instructor within that particular course. class Course extends Eloquent { public function users() { return $this->belongsToMany('User')->withPivot('participant_role')->withTimestamps(); } } However, there is an additional role, system admin, which can be defined on the User object. And this brings me mucho headache. In my blade view I have the following: @if ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') { // do something here... } This works fine when the user has been assigned to that particular $course and there is an entry for this user-course combination in the pivot table. However, the problem is the system administrator, who also should be able to access course details. The if-clause above gives Trying to get property of non-object error, apparently because there is no entry in the pivot table for system administrator (as the role is defined within the User object). I could probably solve the problem by using some off-the-shelf bundle for handling role-based permissions. Or I could (but don't want to) do something like this with two internal if-clauses: if (!empty($course->pivot)) { if ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') { // do something... } } Other options (suggested in partially similar entries in Stackoverflow) would include 1) reading all the pivot table entries to an array, and use in_array to check if a role exists, or even 2) SQL left join to do this on database level. However, ultimately I am looking for a compact one-line solution? Can I do anything similar to this, which unfortunately does not seem to work? if (! empty ($course->pivot->participant_role == 'instructor') ) { // do something... } The shorter the answer, the better :-).
