  • Linux depends hell when installing a small mp3 player...

    - by smwikipedia
I try to install a small audio player named "Audacious" with the following command: sudo apt-get install audacious and it tells me that it depends audacious-plugins, so I try to install the audacious-plugins, one thing leads to another, there're numerous depends and it is just impossible to install all of them manually... Is it even possible to install a software on ubuntu linux? Is there a way to auto install all the depends? (I have never seen such a stupid software manager.) Many thanks.

  • WinForms Application Form "Shakes" When Audio Playing

    - by ikurtz
I have a C# game program that i'm developing. it uses sound samples and winsock. when i test run the game most of the audio works fine but from time to time if it is multiple samples being played sequentially the application form shakes a little bit and then goes back to its old position. how do i go about debugging this or present it to you folks in a manageable manner? i'm sure no one is going to want the whole app code in fear of virus attacks. please guide me.. EDIT: i have not been able to pin down any code section that produces this result. it just does and i cannot explain it. EDIT: no the x/y position are not changing. the window like shakes around a few pixels and then goes back to the position were it was before the shake. if (audio) { Stream stream; SoundPlayer player; stream = Properties.Resources.ResourceManager.GetStream("_home"); player = new System.Media.SoundPlayer(stream); player.PlaySync(); player.Dispose(); string ShipID = fireResult.DestroyedShipType.ToString(); stream = Properties.Resources.ResourceManager.GetStream("_" + ShipID); player = new System.Media.SoundPlayer(stream); player.PlaySync(); player.Dispose(); stream = Properties.Resources.ResourceManager.GetStream("_destroyed"); player = new System.Media.SoundPlayer(stream); player.PlaySync(); player.Dispose(); } can you see anything in the above code that would produce this shake?

  • add/remove items in a list

    - by Jam
I'm trying to create a player who can add and remove items from their inventory. I have everything working, I just have 1 small problem. Every time it prints the inventory, 'None' also appears. I've been messing with it to try and remove that, but no matter what I do, 'None' always appears in the program! I know I'm just missing something simple, but I can't figure it out for the life of me. class Player(object): def __init__(self, name, max_items, items): self.name=name self.max_items=max_items self.items=items def inventory(self): for item in self.items: print item def take(self, new_item): if len(self.items)<self.max_items: self.items.append(new_item) else: print "You can't carry any more items!" def drop(self, old_item): if old_item in self.items: self.items.remove(old_item) else: print "You don't have that item." def main(): player=Player("Jimmy", 5, ['sword', 'shield', 'ax']) print "Max items:", player.max_items print "Inventory:", player.inventory() choice=None while choice!="0": print \ """ Inventory Man 0 - Quit 1 - Add an item to inventory 2 - Remove an item from inventory """ choice=raw_input("Choice: ") print if choice=="0": print "Good-bye." elif choice=="1": new_item=raw_input("What item would you like to add to your inventory?") player.take(new_item) print "Inventory:", player.inventory() elif choice=="2": old_item=raw_input("What item would you like to remove from your inventory?") player.drop(old_item) print "Inventory:", player.inventory() else: print "\nSorry, but", choice, "isn't a valid choice." main() raw_input("Press enter to exit.")

  • Original object is also changed when values of cloned object are changed.

    - by fari
I am trying to use clone but the original object is also changed when values of cloned object are changed. As you can see KalaGameState does not use any objects so a shallow copy should work. /** * This class represents the current state of a Kala game, including * which player's turn it is along with the state of the board; i.e. the * numbers of stones in each side pit, and each player's 'kala'). */ public class KalaGameState implements Cloneable { // your code goes here private int turn; private int[] sidePit; private boolean game; public Object clone() { try { return super.clone(); } catch (CloneNotSupportedException e) { // This should never happen throw new InternalError(e.toString()); } } /** * Constructs a new GameState with a specified number of stones in each * player's side pits. * @param startingStones the number of starting stones in each side pit. * @throws InvalidStartingStonesException if startingStones not in the range 1-10. */ public KalaGameState(int startingStones) throws InvalidStartingStonesException { game=true; turn=0; sidePit=new int[14]; for (int i=0; i <= 13 ; i++) { sidePit[i] = startingStones; } sidePit[6] =0; sidePit[13] =0; // your code goes here } /** * Returns the ID of the player whose turn it is. * @return A value of 0 = Player A, 1 = Player B. */ public int getTurn() { return turn; // your code goes here } /** * Returns the current kala for a specified player. * @param playerNum A value of 0 for Player A, 1 for Player B. * @throws IllegalPlayerNumException if the playerNum parameter * is not 0 or 1. */ public int getKala(int playerNum) throws IllegalPlayerNumException { if(playerNum!=0 || playerNum!=1) throw new IllegalPlayerNumException(playerNum); if(playerNum==0) return sidePit[6]; else return sidePit[13]; // your code goes here } /** * Returns the current number of stones in the specified pit for * the player whose turn it is. * @param sidePitNum the side pit being queried in the range 1-6. * @throws IllegalSidePitNumException if the sidePitNum parameter. * is not in the range 1-6. */ public int getNumStones(int sidePitNum) throws IllegalSidePitNumException { if(turn==0) { if(sidePitNum>6 ) throw new IllegalSidePitNumException(sidePitNum); } else if(sidePitNum>12) throw new IllegalSidePitNumException(sidePitNum); if(turn==0) return sidePit[sidePitNum]; else return sidePit[sidePitNum+6]; // your code goes here } /** * Returns the current number of stones in the specified pit for a specified player. * @param playerNum the player whose kala is sought. • Add less than integer variable to string search

    - by user1691832
I'm scanning a text document for certain installed programs on a computer and looking for an easy way to include a greater or less than variable in the string I'm scanning for. Here is a very ugly and cumbersome example of what I'm using currently and while it works as a temporary fix, isn't practical or sustainable. If CheckBox2.Checked Then sReader.Close() If text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin") And text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 11 ActiveX") Then Else If text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 12 Plugin") And text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 12 ActiveX") Then Else If text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 13 Plugin") And text.Contains("Adobe Flash Player 13 ActiveX") Then Else '(Goes ahead and does a silent install of the missing or outdated program) So far I've run into this problem with both Adobe Flash and Java RTE and am certain to run into it with future programs. Essentially I need to scan for "Adobe Flash Player (Any number less than 11) Plugin" , "Adobe Flash Player (Any number less than 11) ActiveX" , "Java (number less than 9) Update (any number)". I'm sure whatever solution is offered can likely be adapted to similar programs I'm likely to encounter later. Thanks ----- Edit ----- I've since tried the following code but it always returns the "Found" messagebox, even when no version of adobe flash is present in the file it is scanning. If CheckBox2.Checked Then sReader.Close() Dim options As RegexOptions = RegexOptions.None Dim regex As Regex = New Regex("Adobe Flash Player (?<version>\d+) (Plugin|ActiveX)", options) Dim input As String = "Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin" ' Get match Dim match As Match = regex.Match(input) Dim version As String = match.Groups("version").Value If (match.Success) Then MessageBox.Show("Version 11 or higher found, skipping install") Else MessageBox.Show("Version 11 or higher not found, installing Version 11")

  • My code gets an argument error, expecting 1 but got 0 - AS3

    - by Louis Cottier
    I've got this code with a variable of platform, which I'm trying to link with the actual object of Platform in my .fla file but I get this error when I run it; ArgumentError: Error #1063: Argument count mismatch on Code(). Expected 1, got 0. In my output window. package { import flash.display.MovieClip; import flash.events.MouseEvent; import flash.events.KeyboardEvent; import flash.events.Event; import flash.ui.Keyboard; public class Code extends MovieClip { var charSpeed:int = 0; var velocity:int = 0; var gravity:Number = 1; var Jump:Boolean = false; public function startGame(){ stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN, checkKeyDown); stage.addEventListener(KeyboardEvent.KEY_UP, checkKeyUp); stage.addEventListener(Event.ENTER_FRAME, loop); } private var platform:Platform; public function Code(value:Platform) { platform = value; } function checkKeyDown(evt:KeyboardEvent){ if (evt.keyCode == Keyboard.LEFT){ charSpeed -= 10; } if (evt.keyCode == Keyboard.RIGHT){ charSpeed += 10; } if (evt.keyCode == Keyboard.DOWN){ if(!Jump){ velocity -= 14; Jump = true; } } } function checkKeyUp(evt:KeyboardEvent){ if (evt.keyCode == Keyboard.LEFT){ charSpeed = 0; } if (evt.keyCode == Keyboard.RIGHT){ charSpeed = 0; } } function loop(evt:Event){ player.x = velocity; if (player.x < 0){ player.x = 0; } if (player.x > 550){ player.x = 550; } velocity += gravity; var Platform:Array = new Array(platform) if (!Platform.hitTestPoint(player.x, player.y, true)){ player.y += velocity; } for (var i = 0; i < 10; i++){ if (Platform.hitTestPoint(player.x, player.y, true)){ player.y--; velocity = 0; Jump = false; } } } } } The as3 file name is Code, and the fla file name is Game. My objective is to get my player to move around on the platform using the arrow keys. The linkage of my platform is "Platform". If anyone could help that would be great

  • how to access a different movieclip within the flash in AS3

    - by Pieter888
I've been trying to learn Action Script 3 the past few weeks, making tiny interactive games to learn the basics. I stumble upon a problem every now and then but most of the times google helps me out. But this problem has got me stuck so please help: The main stage contains two objects(movieclips), the player and a wall. The player has got his own code so when I drag in the player object I don't have to write any code into the main stage to be able to move the player. This all worked pretty well and I now wanted to add the wall so the player actually has something to bounce into. Now here is the problem, I want to check if the player touches the wall, I've done this before but that was when I used the main stage as my coding playground instead of putting the code in movieclips. How can I check if the player hits the wall within the movement code of the player object?

  • In C++, I want to implement a ring iterator for a deque that contains a personally defined class.

    - by George
    I have a function of a "Table" class that should add a player to the table. I decided that if the seat is taken, the function should try and go through all the seats and add the player to the next available seat. How do I implement this in my addPlayer function? int Table::addPlayer(Player player, int position) { deque<Player>::iterator it; if(playerList[position] != "(empty seat)") { //What goes here? } playerList.put(player,it); cout >> "Player " >> player.toString >> " sits at position " >> position >> endl; }

  • Collision detection with multiple polygons simultaneously

    - by Craig Innes
I've written a collision system which detects/resolves collisions between a rectangular player and a convex polygon world using the Separating Axis Theorem. This scheme works fine when the player is colliding with a single polygon, but when I try to create a level made up of combinations of these shapes, the player gets "stuck" between shapes when trying to move from one polygon to the other. The reason for this seems to be that collisions are detected after the player has been pushed through the shape by its movement or gravity. When the system resolves the collision, it resolves them in an order that doesn't make sense (for example, when the player is moving from one flat rectangle to another, gravity pushes them below the ground, but the collision with the left hand side of the second block is resolved before the collision with the top of the block, meaning the player is pushed back left before being pushed back up). Other similar posts have resolved this problem by having a strict rule on which axes to resolve first. For example, always resolve the collision on the y axis, then if the object is still colliding with things, resolve on the x axis. This solution only works in the case of a completely axis oriented box world, and doesn't solve the problem if the player is stuck moving along a series of angled shapes or sliding down a wall. Does any one have any ideas of how I could alter my collision system to prevent these situations from happening?

  • Embedded .swf file in .pfd-Ubuntu 10.04

    - by Thanos
I have just finished a presentation in LaTeX. In this very .pdf file I have included a .swf animation(done with adobe flash CS5 in windows) which starts when you click on it. While I have already installed a relevant player(swfdec flash player) neither document viewer nor okular are able to reproduce it. I tried with my player to make sure that the file is not corrupted and the result was that it can be produced. I tried the same .pdf file in windows using adobe reader and there is no problem there. The embedded file can be reproduced with no problem. So I thought of installing adobe in ubuntu. I tried there to see if the problem was solved. Things got a bit better. Adobe could understand that there is something there, so when clicked I got a message that I had to get the proper player. When I clicked on a relevant button I expected to open my browser in a player's page. Instead nothing happened. If I place my mouse's cursor next to the space that defines my animation the is a "message" stating "Media File(application/x-shockwave flash)". The next step was to install Adobe Flash player, but I couldn't find the standallone player;only the browser's plugs... How can I get this .swf file play in pdf?

  • Java : 2D Collision Detection

    - by neko
I'm been working on 2D rectangle collision for weeks and still cannot get this problem fixed. The problem I'm having is how to adjust a player to obstacles when it collides. I'm referencing this link. The player sometime does not get adjusted to obstacles. Also, it sometimes stuck in obstacle guy after colliding. Here, the player and the obstacle are inheriting super class Sprite I can detect collision between the two rectangles and the point by ; public Point getSpriteCollision(Sprite sprite, double newX, double newY) { // set each rectangle Rectangle spriteRectA = new Rectangle( (int)getPosX(), (int)getPosY(), getWidth(), getHeight()); Rectangle spriteRectB = new Rectangle( (int)sprite.getPosX(), (int)sprite.getPosY(), sprite.getWidth(), sprite.getHeight()); // if a sprite is colliding with the other sprite if (spriteRectA.intersects(spriteRectB)){ System.out.println("Colliding"); return new Point((int)getPosX(), (int)getPosY()); } return null; } and to adjust sprites after a collision: // Update the sprite's conditions public void update() { // only the player is moving for simplicity // collision detection on x-axis (just x-axis collision detection at this moment) double newX = x + vx; // calculate the x-coordinate of sprite move Point sprite = getSpriteCollision(map.getSprite().get(1), newX, y);// collision coordinates (x,y) if (sprite == null) { // if the player is no colliding with obstacle guy x = newX; // move } else { // if collided if (vx > 0) { // if the player was moving from left to right x = (sprite.x - vx); // this works but a bit strange } else if (vx < 0) { x = (sprite.x + vx); // there's something wrong with this too } } vx=0; y+=vy; vy=0; } I think there is something wrong in update() but cannot fix it. Now I only have a collision with the player and an obstacle guy but in future, I'm planning to have more of them and making them all collide with each other. What would be a good way to do it? Thanks in advance.

  • How to properly multi thread an RPG

    - by Nagrom_17
I am working on an RPG type game in Java and I would like to know a few things relating to threading, What is the best way to implement a "wait for this then do this" without hanging the whole thread? Like waiting for a player to move to a location then pick up an item? or to wait one second then attack? Currently I am spawning new threads every time I need to wait for something, but that doesn't feel like the best solution. Any help is appreciated. EDIT: Clarification and an example of how I currently do things. User clicks on an item The function walkToAndPickUp(item) is called which is basically this: Make a new thread so we don't freeze the thread handling input while the player moves. Tell player to move to the item While the player is not at the item(The player moves through an update() function called in a different thread, I don't know how else to do it without freezing threads) Repeat until the player is at the item If the player is at the item then call delete item from map and add to inventory.

  • How should I structure moving from overworld to menu system / combat?

    - by persepolis
I'm making a text-based "Arena" game where the player is the owner of 5 creatures that battle other teams for loot, experience and glory. The game is very simple, using Python and a curses emulator. I have a static ASCII map of an "overworld" of sorts. My character, represented by a glyph, can move about this static map. There are locations all over the map that the character can visit, that break down into two types: 1) Towns, which are a series of menus that will allow the player to buy equipment for his team, hire new recruits or do other things. 2) Arenas, where the player's team will have a "battle" interface with actions he can perform, messages about the fight, etc. Maybe later, an ASCII representation of the fight but for now, just screens of information with action prompts. My main problem is what kind of design or structure I should use to implement this? Right now, the game goes through a master loop which waits for keyboard input and then moves the player about the screen. My current thinking is this: 1) Upon keyboard input, the Player coordinates are checked against a list of Location objects and if the Player coords match the Location coords then... 2) ??? I'm not sure if I should then call a seperate function to initiate a "menu" or "combat" mode. Or should I create some kind of new GameMode object that contains a method itself for drawing the screen, printing the necessary info? How do I pass my player's team data into this object? My main concern is passing around the program flow into all these objects. Should I be calling straight functions for different parts of my game, and objects to represent "things" within my game? I was reading about the MVC pattern and how this kind of problem might benefit - decouple the GUI from the game logic and user input but I have no idea how this applies to my game.

  • Checking for collisions on a 3D heightmap

    - by Piku
I have a 3D heightmap drawn using OpenGL (which isn't important). It's represented by a 2D array of height data. To draw this I go through the array using each point as a vertex. Three vertices are wound together to form a triangle, two triangles to make a quad. To stop the whole mesh being tiny I scale this by a certain amount called 'gridsize'. This produces a fairly nice and lumpy, angular terrain kind of similar to something you'd see in old Atari/Amiga or DOS '3D' games (think Virus/Zarch on the Atari ST). I'm now trying to work out how to do collision with the terrain, testing to see if the player is about to collide with a piece of scenery sticking upwards or fall into a hole. At the moment I am simply dividing the player's co-ordinates by the gridsize to find which vertex the player is on top of and it works well when the player is exactly over the corner of a triangle piece of terrain. However... How can I make it more accurate for the bits between the vertices? I get confused since they don't exist in my heightmap data, they're a product of the GPU trying to draw a triangle between three points. I can calculate the height of the point closest to the player, but not the space between them. I.e if the player is hovering over the centre of one of these 'quads', rather than over the corner vertex of one, how do I work out the height of the terrain below them? Later on I may want the player to slide down the slopes in the terrain.

So finally we get to the fun part the fruits of all of our middle-tier/back end labors of generating classes to interface with an XML data source that the previous posts were about can now be presented quickly and easily to an end user.  I think.  Well see.  Well be using a WPF window to display all of our various MFL information that weve collected in the two XML files, and well provide a means of adding, updating and deleting each of these entities using as little code as possible.  Additionally, I would like to dig into the performance of this solution as well as the flexibility of it if were were to modify the underlying XML schema.  So first things first, lets create a WPF project and include our xml data in a data folder within.  On the main window, well drag out the following controls: A combo box to contain all of the teams A list box to show the players of the selected team, along with add/delete player buttons A text box tied to the selected players name, with a save button to save any changes made to the player name A combo box of all the available positions, tied to the currently selected players position A data grid tied to the statistics of the currently selected player, with add/delete statistic buttons This monstrosity of a form and its associated project will look like this (dont forget to reference the DataFoundation project from the Presentation project): To get to the visual data binding, as we learned in a previous post, you have to first make sure the project containing your bindable classes is compiled.  Do so, and then open the Data Sources pane to add a reference to the Teams and Positions classes in the DataFoundation project: Why only Team and Position?  Well, we will get to Players from Teams, and Statistics from Players so no need to make an interface for them as well see in a second.  As for Positions, well need a way to bind the dropdown to ALL positions they dont appear underneath any of the other classes so we need to reference it directly.  After adding these guys, expand every node in your Data Sources pane and see how the Team node allows you to drill into Players and then Statistics.  This is why there was no need to bring in a reference to those classes for the UI we are designing: Now for the seriously hard work of binding all of our controls to the correct data sources.  Drag the following items from the Data Sources pane to the specified control on the window design canvas: Team.Name > Teams combo box Team.Players.Name > Players list box Team.Players.Name > Player name text box Team.Players.Statistics > Statistics data grid Position.Name > Positions combo box That is it!  Really?  Well, no, not really there is one caveat here in that the Positions combo box is not bound the selected players position.  To do so, we will apply a binding to the position combo boxs SelectedValue to point to the current players PositionId value: That should do the trick now, all we need to worry about is loading the actual data.  Sadly, it appears as if we will need to drop to code in order to invoke our IO methods to load all teams and positions.  At least Visual Studio kindly created the stubs for us to do so, ultimately the code should look like this: Note the weirdness with the InitializeDataFiles call that is my current means of telling an IO where to load the data for each of the entities.  I havent thought of a more intuitive way than that yet, but do note that all data is loaded from Teams.xml besides for positions, which is loaded from Lookups.xml.   I think that may be all we need to do to at least load all of the data, lets run it and see: Yay!  All of our glorious data is being displayed!  Er, wait, whats up with the position dropdown?  Why is it red?  Lets select the RB and see if everything updates: Crap, the position didnt update to reflect the selected player, but everything else did.  Where did we go wrong in binding the position to the selected player?  Thinking about it a bit and comparing it to how traditional data binding works, I realize that we never set the value member (or some similar property) to tell the control to join the Id of the source (positions) to the position Id of the player.  I dont see a similar property to that on the combo box control, but I do see a property named SelectedValuePath that might be it, so I set it to Id and run the app again: Hey, all right!  No red box around the positions combo box.  Unfortunately, selecting the RB does not update the dropdown to point to Runningback.  Hmmm.  Now what could it be?  Maybe the problem is that we are loading teams before we are loading positions, so when it binds position Id, all of the positions arent loaded yet.  I went to the code behind and switched things so position loads first and no dice.  Same result when I run.  Why?  WHY?  Ok, ok, calm down, take a deep breath.  Get something with caffeine or sugar (preferably both) and think rationally. Ok, gigantic chocolate chip cookie and a mountain dew chaser have never let me down in the past, so dont fail me now!  Ah ha!  of course!  I didnt even have to finish the mountain dew and I think Ive got it:  Data Context.  By default, when setting on the selected value binding for the dropdown, the data context was list_team.  I dont even know what the heck list_team is, we want it to be bound to our team players view source resource instead, like this: Running it now and selecting the various players: Done and done.  Everything read and bound, thank you caffeine and sugar!  Oh, and thank you Visual Studio 2010.  Lets wire up some of those buttons now There has got to be a better way to do this, but it works for now.  What the add player button does is add a new player object to the currently selected team.  Unfortunately, I couldnt get the new object to automatically show up in the players list (something about not using an observable collection gotta look into this) so I just save the change immediately and reload the screen.  Terrible, but it works: Lets go after something easier:  The save button.  By default, as we type in new text for the players name, it is showing up in the list box as updated.  Cool!  Why couldnt my add new player logic do that?  Anyway, the save button should be as simple as invoking MFL.IO.Save for the selected player, like this: MFL.IO.Save((MFL.Player)lbTeamPlayers.SelectedItem, true); Surprisingly, that worked on the first try.  Lets see if we get as lucky with the Delete player button: MFL.IO.Delete((MFL.Player)lbTeamPlayers.SelectedItem); Refresh(); Note the use of the Refresh method again I cant seem to figure out why updates to the underlying data source are immediately reflected, but adds and deletes are not.  That is a problem for another day, and again my hunch is that I should be binding to something more complex than IEnumerable (like observable collection). Now that an example of the basic CRUD methods are wired up, I want to quickly investigate the performance of this beast.  Im going to make a special button to add 30 teams, each with 50 players and 10 seasons worth of stats.  If my math is right, that will end up with 15000 rows of data, a pretty hefty amount for an XML file.  The save of all this new data took a little over a minute, but that is acceptable because we wouldnt typically be saving batches of 15k records, and the resulting XML file size is a little over a megabyte.  Not huge, but big enough to see some read performance numbers or so I thought.  It reads this file and renders the first team in under a second.  That is unbelievable, but we are lazy loading and the file really wasnt that big.  I will increase it to 50 teams with 100 players and 20 seasons each - 100,000 rows.  It took a year and a half to save all of that data, and resulted in an 8 megabyte file.  Seriously, if you are loading XML files this large, get a freaking database!  Despite this, it STILL takes under a second to load and render the first team, which is interesting mostly because I thought that it was loading that entire 8 MB XML file behind the scenes.  I have to say that I am quite impressed with the performance of the LINQ to XML approach, particularly since I took no efforts to optimize any of this code and was fairly new to the concept from the start.  There might be some merit to this little project after all Look out SQL Server and Oracle, use XML files instead!  Next up, I am going to completely pull the rug out from under the UI and change a number of entities in our model.  How well will the code be regenerated?  How much effort will be required to tie things back together in the UI?Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How to implement behavior in a component-based game architecture?

    - by ghostonline
I am starting to implement player and enemy AI in a game, but I am confused about how to best implement this in a component-based game architecture. Say I have a following player character that can be stationary, running and swinging a sword. A player can transit to the swing sword state from both the stationary and running state, but then the swing must be completed before the player can resume standing or running around. During the swing, the player cannot walk around. As I see it, I have two implementation approaches: Create a single AI-component containing all player logic (either decoupled from the actual component or embedded as a PlayerAIComponent). I can easily how to enforce the state restrictions without creating coupling between individual components making up the player entity. However, the AI-component cannot be broken up. If I have, for example, an enemy that can only stand and walk around or only walks around and occasionally swing a sword, I have to create new AI-components. Break the behavior up in components, each identifying a specific state. I then get a StandComponent, WalkComponent and SwingComponent. To enforce the transition rules, I have to couple each component. SwingComponent must disable StandComponent and WalkComponent for the duration of the swing. When I have an enemy that only stands around, swinging a sword occasionally, I have to make sure SwingComponent only disables WalkComponent if it is present. Although this allows for better mix-and-matching components, it can lead to a maintainability nightmare as each time a dependency is added, the existing components must be updated to play nicely with the new requirements the dependency places on the character. The ideal situation would be that a designer can build new enemies/players by dragging components into a container, without having to touch a single line of engine or script code. Although I am not sure script coding can be avoided, I want to keep it as simple as possible. Summing it all up: Should I lob all AI logic into one component or break up each logic state into separate components to create entity variants more easily?

  • Input prediction and server re-simultaion

    - by Lope
I have read plenty of articles about multiplayer principles and I have basic client-server system set up. There is however one thing I am not clear on. When player enters input, it is sent to the server and steps back in time to check if what should have happened at the time of that input and it resimulates the world again. So far everything's clear. All articles took shooting as an example, because it is easy to explain and it is pretty straightforward, but I believe movement is more complicated. Imagine following situation: 2 players move towards each other. A------<------B Player A stops halfway towards the collision point, but there is lag spike so the command does not arrive on the server for a second or so. Current state of the world on the server (and on the other clients as well) at the time when input arrives is this: [1]: -------AB------- The command arrives and we go back in time and re-simulate the world, the result is this: [2]: ---AB----------- Player A sees situation [2] which is correct, but the player is suddenly teleported from the position in [1] (center) to the position in [2]. Is this how this is supposed to work? Point of the client prediction is to give lagged player feeling that everything is smooth, not to ruin experience for other players. Alternative is to discard timestamp on the player's input and handle it when it arrives on the server without going back in time. This, however, creates even more severe problems for lagged player (even if he is lagging just a bit)

  • Managing game objects/components

    - by Xeon06
Good day everyone, By far the biggest problem that has always dawned on my when programming games is how to structure my code. It just becomes an incredible mess after a while. The reason for that is because I have no idea how different classes should interact with each other. Let's have an example. Say I have a class Player, a class PlayerInput and a class Map. The player class contains information as to the location of the player, whereas the player input class handles changing that location, but by first making sure it's within a walkable area from the map class. How to structure this? My usual approach is to pass those components as parameters in the constructors of the parameters that need them, like so: var map = new Map(); var player = new Player(); var input = new PlayerInput(player, map); The problem with that is that it quickly gets messy, when you add new components you have to go through your constructors and update them, and it doesn't work well if you have mirroring references: var physics = new Physics(input); //Oops, doesn't work var input = new Input(physics); So, how do you guys usually manage this? Thanks.

  • Flash Player 10.1 for Flash Professional CS4 playerglobal.swc?

    - by TheDarkIn1978
Adobe released projector, debugger and plugin for Flash 10.1 yesterday. on my Mac i've installed the standalone player and debugger in Adobe Flash CS4/Players/ and Adobe Flash CS4/Players/Debug respectively. however, i think i need to download the globalplayer.swc for 10.1 so that Flash CS4 IDE is directed to use the new players. i've searched but i could only find the globalplayer.swc that was released during the 10.1 betas, and i'm not sure if that's the .swc i should use for the final 10.1 release. Adobe's site doesn't mention anything about replacing the .swc to use 10.1 in CS4, so i'm not sure if it's necessary. i've tried creating actionscripts to include flash.ui.Multitouch and flashx.textLayout and neither can be found. i have no idea how to make Flash Professional CS4 use the new APIs available in Flash Player 10.1 suggestions?

  • How can I get it the Free Music Archive audio player or is there a better alternative?

    - by Dennis Hodapp
I'm looking at free streaming audio players for web browsers that I can use in a project. I really like the audio player used on http://freemusicarchive.org/. Are they using an open source audio player and can I get a hold of it? Or is it closed source? Also if there are any open-source audio players that anybody knows about I'd love to know about them (preferable to have one with no flash). Last thing...is HTML5 going to be able to replace audio streaming players?

  • How do I set the timeout on the standalone Flash player in FlexBuilder?

    - by Joshua Fox
I am using FlexBuilder 3 (which works as an Eclipse plugin). To debug, I launch the standalone Flash players for Flash 9 and 10 from Eclipse. I find that an HTTPService connection on both these version times out after 30 seconds. Flash does not time out when I run the same application in Flash in Firefox or Chrome (I have the debug version of Flash 10 installed there). How can I set the timeout in the standalone Flash player? There seem to be very few config options in the GUI, and none in the Windows registry. Setting HTTPService.requestTimeout programmatically does not help. Alternatively, is there a way to download and install a second copy (which might give me some other default timeout). (I know of the downloadable debug player, but that does not run as a standalone exe.)
