• Synonyms for different languages in LibreOffice Writer? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How do I add English-UK thesaurus in LibreOffice? When setting a text for English US the context menu contains 'Synonyms' This is not the case for the other languages for which I have the spelling installed (English UK, French etc) Can I have the Synonyms option for UK English too, for example? Even that is a problem although there seems to be solutions around for it. Here, for example, (which is a link to here) but after testing it cannot see synonyms for uk. Also this which was reported as a solution is not working anymore it seems. What about other languages? (Please notice that this question is not just about English-UK. I have initially noticed that 'synonyms' where missing in relation to British, but I am asking about how to solve the issue in general or, when there is no general solution, how to solve it on a case-by-case basis. • Contract Programming - Deposit % and Payment Methods? Any advice is appreciated

  I'm pretty new to doing contract work and finally landed a decent paying project. The guy actually offered to put down a deposit and I'm just wondering what percentage I should consider asking for. I was thinking around 25% since its not a terribly large project (only about 20 hours). Also, I can't use PayPal (have had a terrible experience with them freezing funds for no good reason) so I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other methods for the client to send the deposit / payment. I want to make it as easy as possible for them.. thanks for any advice

• No keyring secrets found for [ssid] /802-11-wireless-security, ubuntu 12.04

  I'm on Ubuntu 12.04 x64bit, installed it couple of days ago. The issue i'm having is this: on startup it connects to my wireless without a problem, but after a while I am disconnected and prompted to enter the key for the wireless network (which is entered - saved) so i just click 'ok', but wireless doesn't connect again. Reseting network manager doesn't help either. Only restart, after which, ubuntu connects to the said wireless without a problem. Terminal outputs this error message: ** Message: No keyring secrets found for cimermanovic /802-11-wireless-security; asking user. cimermanovic is the ssid name. also, here are some error messages that network manager is giving: (nm-applet:31926): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed (nm-applet:31693): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed (nm-applet:30184): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width 0' failed What should i do to fix this? • how to uninstall sphinx server

  I installed (from sources) yesterday sphinx server and didn't think of configuring it properly, so I left the default installation directory (/usr/local). Today I realized that it created all of it's directories inside that directory, instead of creating its own (as I wrongly thought). So today I started again the installation and specified explicitly the location where to install. After that I removed the previous directories from /usr/local that were created when the first installation was done (bin, etc, var). So I thought of giving it a test. I created the .conf file and wanted to run the indexer. But now, the indexer always tries to search the .conf file in the old location (obviously does not find anything) and when I specify where to find the .conf file it gives me errors for each of the configuration settings present. I know I did something wrong when I deleted manually those files and that's why I'm asking you if have any ideas how to correctly uninstall sphinx. Thank you.

• How to shade a texture two different colors?

  To give an example of what I'm asking about, I'll use Saints Row 3 since I've been playing that lately. In that game you can customize your looks and your car's appearance a lot. Your coat can have a primary color and a trim color. Your car can have a primary color and a stripe color, etc. Is there just a single coat texture that is being shaded two different colors somehow or are they overlaying a transparent second texture for the trim/stripes that gets shaded differently? If it's just one texture I'd like to know how it's done. If it's two different textures it seems like it's a waste of space. The second texture would be the same size as the first one but mostly transparent if you just wanted to lay it on top of the first one. Or are they just carefully positioning a second, smaller texture so that it aligns properly with the first one?

• Importance of certifications for Java programmer without BS degree?

  I've read some posts here and other places about how a lot of people don't put much value in certifications but I am beginning to think it may be necessary for me at this point to be able to move to a bigger company, etc. I currently work as a Java programmer with a startup and worked with a small company before that. Now that I'm applying with larger companies the hr people / recruiters have been asking a lot about certifications and some have directly suggested that someone in my position should probably get a few (they were trying to be helpful) since I haven't completed a BS degree yet (I bounced around a bit in college and ended up not finishing but have enough units to finish eventually, just its not something I can do nearly as easily as getting certifications). Anyways, just curious about what people think for someone in my situation where I do have an interested in working for large companies and do not currently have a BS degree (but do have experience already in the field). Any advice on which certifications beyond the SCJP would be appreciated as well

• Radeon HD5670 hangs after login

  Thanks in advance for your advices. I installed, Ubuntu 12.04 today, on my PC with a Radeon hd5670 graphics card. The first error I encountered, (just like the first time Unity came out - after witch I waited to try Ubuntu again until now) is, that it hanged after login at the desktop wallpaper, with only the mouse cursor. Well actually the first problem was with the live CD, but I managed to install it, using the install now, not the try now. Live CD has the same problem, as after install. So, after installing and getting the error, I searched of course before asking this:) I found this: Ubuntu hangs at purple screen The accepted answer there helped me to get to this. (note, that the below picture is a screen taken from a working desktop, and then erased the parts that don't show on mine.) Note that there is nothing at the top except the brown bar. No shutdown button, no nothing. The system hangs, I can't click on anything, I can only wiggle around with my mouse XD

• How do I get the Netgear N150 USB wifi adapter working on 12.04?

  Just installed latest version of ubuntu. I'm using a Netgear N150 Wireless USB Micro Adapter WNA1000M which keeps asking for network password over and over. I read elsewhere that I needed to install the latest driver for my chipset (RTL8188CUS) which I have and still no joy. If I run the steps listed in this thread while connected through ethernet, the wireless will connect just fine. If I disconnect the ethernet, the wifi will even continue to work, but after a restart or two I will lose connection. If I repeat the steps listed in the aforementioned thread, it will not re-connect wifi unless I run those steps while connected to ethernet.......so strange...

  Following the recent Google announcements about improved ranking for sites running on https we have a number of clients asking about this. Is it safe to just 301 redirect all pages to their SSL equivalent, for example in a common PHP include file: if($_SERVER['HTTPS']!="on"){ $redirect= "https://".$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'].$_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']; header("Location:$redirect",true,301); exit(); } Obviously I'm aware this is also possible within a .htaccess file but that cannot be modified in our case. Obviously all internal links would be switched to https:// links but obviously we need to sort out incoming links from Google and elsewhere. Is this a sound approach? Are there any other gotchas to be aware of?

• Design for future changes or solve the problem at hand

  While writing the code or during design do you try to generalize the problem at the first instance itself or try to solve that very specific problem. I am asking this because, trying to generalize the problem tends to complicate the things (which may not be necessary) and on the otherhand it will be very difficult to extend the specific solution if there is a change in the requirement. I guess the solution is to find the middle path which is easier said than done. How do you tackle this type of problem ? If you start generalizing it at what point of time you know that this much of generalization is sufficient ?

  My question is kind of hard to follow, but I'm asking if it's possible to make a virtual flash drive and sync it to another device with a USB to USB cable? To make things more clear, think of a typical flash drive. You connect it to a laptop and it shows up as a removable disk. Is it possible to make a computer a host of a "Virtual Drive" that would be connected to a USB cord on one end, and the other end connecting to another device such as a Xbox 360, or another computer.

  I was reading a book about XP programming and about agile teams. While I was reading, I saw this scenario. I've never worked with a development team (just in school). So I would like what do you opine on this situation: Your boss has asked you to deliver software in a time that can only be possible to meet the project team asking if you want to work overtime without pay. All team members have young children. Discuss whether it should accept this request from your boss or should persuade the team to give their time to the organization rather than their families. What could be significant factors in the decision? As a programmer, you are offered an upgrade as project manager, but his feeling is that you can have a more effective contribution in a technical role in one administrative. Write when you should accept that promotion. Somethimes, I sacrifice my free time for accomplishing hits at work, so it's very important to me to know your opinion base of your experience.

• Can these game be fully coded in html5/javascript?

  I mean the mechanics of the game. Would it be possible? -Pokemon GBA series, rendering the world would be easy, but what about battle mechanics? -MapleStory, after seen dragonbound.net which is an identical copy of Gunbound I would think it's rather possible, but I'm still not sure if javascript can handle all the mechanics of the world. It would be heavy on resources I guess? I'm asking this because I'm really interested in html5 game develop(I really think in a future will destroy flash on game dev ground). I want to have an idea of how far games developed with the html5/javascript technology can go. I got especially inspired by dragonbound. I really think it pushes htmlt/javascript to the limits (game dev).

• Learning the nuances of a language (C++)

  So I'm a recent college graduate, and I really enjoy working in C++; I worked with it a lot in school, and would like to pursue a career writing in C or C++. The problem I'm having is that I'm trying to learn the nuances of C++. I'm not talking about the basics, or even advanced concepts like templates, namespaces, etc. I'm talking about the real nitty-gritty stuff like undefined behavior and stuff like that. When I'm interviewing, and they put a bizarre piece of C++ code in front of me, and ask me what the output will be, I want to be able to nail those questions. Obviously experience is a great way to learn, but when I write code for practice, I [obviously] know what it does. Reading open-source projects have been good practice, but I find that there tends to be an enormous learning curve just understanding the organization of the code (because the projects tend to be large). So basically what I'm asking is, what should I do now?

For example, I recently looked at the website of a company producing software for the aerospatial industry and noticed that they are using the V-model. Would a SCRUM proponent say that SCRUM is not suited for this kind of projects or rather suggest that this company should try switching to SCRUM? Notice that I am not asking for the opinion of the readers of this forum, but I want to know what is the established opinion among SCRUM proposers: is SCRUM considered general-purpose or rather suitable for certain classes of projects only? In the latter cases, for what kinds of projects?

• Setting up International Keyboard -layouts over X? Why do my kbd -layouts get reseted after reboot?

  I have asked a related question in different sites such as here in German and a related thread here, a different case in the latter though. I almost solved the question here, basically: "/etc/default/keyboard" -modification and one-line "$ setxkbmap -option grp:caps_toggle -variant dvorak-intl,nodeadkeys, us,de,no &" -- but the layout-settings get reseted after reboot. I use Debian but I believe the same settings apply to Ubuntu hence asking here. So how can I get settings to stay after rebooting? $ cat /etc/default/keyboard XKBMODEL="pc105" XKBLAYOUT="us,de,no" XKBVARIANT="dvorak-intl,nodeadkeys," XKBOPTIONS="grp:caps_toggle"

• Is there a name for this issue?

  I was just talking to my partner about how hard it is to personally judge how good your product is after a while because you use it so often. You literally spend hours on your computer doing nothing but work on this Consumer Facing application, and you start to feel a little fatigue of using it over and over and over, at least a hundred times a day. You get scared this fatigue may mean the product you are building may have the same effect on the users and might mean you are doing something wrong. All i'm asking is, is there a name for this in product development? For the fact that as a designer+ programmer+everything else, your product might not suck as much as you think simply because you spend way to much time with it, or a variation of this?

• What's the best language to use for a simple windows 7 dynamic gui desktop app [closed]

  [Note: I hope I am not breaking etiquette, but I originally posted a variant on this question here, but am re-asking here because I am making this now solely a question about programming.] I would like to program of the following simple form: The user can produce X number of resizable frames (analogous to HTML frames). Each frame serves as a simple text editor, which you can type into and save the whole configuration including resized windows and text. The user should be able alternately "freeze" and present the information, and "unfreeze" and edit frames. Thus it will be a cross between a calendar and a text editor. I don't particularly care if it is a web application or not. What languages are ideal for such a setup? I know some C and Python and Html, and am willing to learn others if need be. It seems to me this should be a relatively easy program to make, but I need a little direction before starting. EDIT: My OS is Windows 7.

• Why is 2^16 a "special" number?

  OK, I feel stupid asking this - but in Jeff's article: Getting the Interview Phone Screen Right and originally stated in the 5 essential phone screen questions: They shouldn't stare blankly at you when you ask with 2^16 is. It's a special number. They should know it. I've been a developer\software engineer\code monkey\whatever for a little while now, and I don't think I've ever come across this. I mean, I can certainly count binary values do basic operations on them, etc, etc. But I don't see what is "special" about this value.

• Copying an SSH Public Key to a Server

  I'm attempting to setup a git repository on my Dreamhost web server by following the "Setup: For the Impatient" instructions here. I'm having difficulty setting up public key access to the server. After successfully creating my public key, I ran the following command: cat ~/.ssh/[MY KEY].pub | ssh [USER]@[MACHINE] "mkdir ~/.ssh; cat >> ~/.ssh/authorized_keys" ...replacing the appropriate placeholders with the correct values. Everything seemed to go through fine. The server asked for my password, and, as far as I can tell, executed the command. There is indeed a ~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the server. The problem: When I try to SSH into the server, it still asks for my password. My understanding is that it shouldn't be asking for my password anymore. What am I missing?

• What is the relevance of resumes in the age of GitHub, Stack Exchange, Coursera, Udacity, blogs, etc.?

  My resume is no longer relevant. It can no longer contain an adequate description of my technical abilities. One can get a much better sense of what I am capable of by looking at my GitHub repositories, my Stack Exchange profiles, and the various courses that I am taking at Udacity and Coursera. The problem is that I have no idea how to tell employers that those are the places to look if they want an accurate description of what I can do. Every time a recruiter contacts me I gently nudge them towards all the resources I just mentioned and I also provide a link to a publicly visible Google doc that contains my resume along with links to all those resources. Yet, they keep coming back asking for a more descriptive resume. How can I make it even more blatantly obvious that if somebody wants to hire me then they can save themselves a whole bunch of trouble by just clicking on a few links and browsing around?

• Importing Data from Google Analytics

  I am planning on building a web app with many different public-facing HTTP servers; each of which will have Google Analytics (GA) installed on them. I'd like to create a "dashboard" app that consolidates the GA data into one screen. I've been perusing the documentation for this so-called GA API, but I can't tell what the end result of the GA API is: Does the GA API allow me to do exactly what I am looking for it to do? Or... Does the GA API do something entirely different (like allow me to share my data with Google+ or something else weird) Since an API can be used to CRUD any kind of data, I guess I'm asking which way the GA API goes: is it for querying (reading) data from 1+ server instances, or is it for modifying data on those servers or somewhere else? Do you know of any statistics about the frequency of exceptions (checked and unchecked) thrown at runtime in typical Java applications? for example: NullPointerException: 25% of all exceptions ClassCastException: 15% of all exceptions etc. 2. Which are the most frequent exceptions according to your own experiences? 3. Would you agree that the NullPointerException is generally the most often thrown exception? I am asking this question in the context of the compiler development of the PPL programming language (www.practical-programming.org). The goal is to auto-detect a maximum of frequent exceptions at compile-time. For example, detecting all potential NullPointerExceptions at compile-time leads to null-safe software which is more reliable.
