• How to double the size of 8x8 Grid whilst keeping the relative position of certain tiles intact?

  Hi guys I have grid size of size 8x8 , total of 64 Tiles. i'm using this Grid to implement java search algorithms such as BFS and DFS. The Grid has given forbidden Tiles (meaning they can't be traversed or be neighbour of any other tile) and Goal and Start tile. for example Tile 19,20,21,22 and 35, 39 are forbidden and 14 an 43 are the Goal and start node when the program runs. My question is , How can i double the size of the grid, to 16x16 whilst keeping the Relative position of forbidden tiles as well as the Relative position of start and goal Tiles intact? On paper i know i can do this by adding 4 rows and columns to all size but in coding terms i don't know how to make it work? Can someone please give any sort of hints?

• Basic help needed with pointers

  Hi, i asked some time ago on an account i cant remember how to manipulate basic pointers and someone gave me a really good demo for example char *ptr = hello (hello = a char array) so now *ptr is pointing at h ptr++ = moves the ptr to point at the next element, to get its value i do *ptr and that gives me e ok so far i hope :D but now i need to manipulate a char **ptr and was wondering how i do this in a way that mimmicks the effects of a 2d array? some basic tips would be much appreciated as i need to do an assignment that has a **ptr to immitate a 2d array and without knowing how it does this first means i cant even solve it on paper (for example, how do you dereference a **ptr, how do you get [x][y] values etc) thanks

  Hi, I'm taking some information from some variables I have already defined outside this function to create a html svg text box. Here is the function which is causing me trouble: RenderTextBox:function() { alert('this.x: ' + this.x); alert('this.y: ' + this.y); this.textBox = paper.text(this.x, this.y, this.htmlTextBox); } The alerts works prefectly, and prompt me with the values expected. However, the final line which is supposed to create the text box puts them nowhere to be seen. Does anybody know why? If I replace 'this.x, this.y..' with numerical values in the final line of the function, the text box is placed correctly. It's only when I use the 'this.x' and 'this.y' that I have issues.

• Crystal Reports - Facilitating front/back printing

  I have a crystal report that is designed to spit out a bunch of reports. Each report is 2 to 7 pages in length. We would like to print on the front and back of pages. However, if we did this now... approximately half of the following reports would print on the back of the last past of the preceding report. Is there a good method for detecting whether an extra page break should be inserted, and if so, actually inserting it, so that when we print the 150 pages front/back that now one piece of paper actually holds data from separate reports? • Distance between hyperplanes

  I'm trying to teach myself some machine learning, and have been using the MNIST database (http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/mnist/) do so. The author of that site wrote a paper in '98 on all different kinds of handwriting recognition techniques, available at http://yann.lecun.com/exdb/publis/pdf/lecun-98.pdf. The 10th method mentioned is a "Tangent Distance Classifier". The idea being that if you place each image in a (NxM)-dimensional vector space, you can compute the distance between two images as the distance between the hyperplanes formed by each where the hyperplane is given by taking the point, and rotating the image, rescaling the image, translating the image, etc. I can't figure out enough to fill in the missing details. I understand that most of these are indeed linear operators, so how does one use that fact to then create the hyperplane? And once we have a hyperplane, how do we take its distance with other hyperplanes?

  What are folks out there using for web/ui design? For the most part we use PowerPoint at my company. The UI folks will mock up a screen in PowerPoint and we (the development group) will take it from there. So, for a side gig of mine I decided to do some mock ups to show the client prior to dev and I'm quickly feeling that PowerPoint is not the right tool for this. What are you using for this type of stuff - some other software? pen/paper?

• Good code visualization / refactoring tools for C++?

  I've found myself coming across a lot of reasonably large, complicated codebases at work recently which I've been asked to either review or refactor or both. This can be extremely time consuming when the code is highly concurrent, makes heavy use of templates (particularly static polymorphism) and has logic that depends on callbacks/signals/condition variables/etc. Are there any good visualization tools for C++ period, and of those are there any that actually play well with "advanced" C++ features? Anything would probably be better than my approach now, which is basically pen+paper or stepping through the debugger. The debugger method can be good for following a particular code path, but isn't great for seeing the big picture you really need when doing serious refactoring. EDIT: I should mention that Visual Studio plugins aren't going to be a lot of help to me, since our stuff is mostly Linux-only.

  I am using OpenCV sample code “peopledetect.cpp” to detect and track pedestrians. The code uses HoG for feature extraction and SVM for classification. Please find the reference paper used here. The camera is mounted on the wall at a height of 10 feet and 45 degree down. There is no restriction on the pedestrian movement within the frame. I want to track the detected pedestrians’ movement within the frame. The issue I am facing is pedestrians are detected only in the middle region of the frame as most of the features are not visible as soon as the pedestrian enters the frame region. I want to track each person’s movement in the entire frame region. How to do it? Is tracking required? Can anyone give any reference to blogs/codes?

• In Scala 2.8 collections, why was the Traversable type added above Iterable?

  I know that to be Traversable, you need only have a foreach method. Iterable requires an iterator method. Both the Scala 2.8 collections SID and the "Fighting Bitrot with Types" paper are basically silent on the subject of why Traversable was added. The SID only says "David McIver... proposed Traversable as a generalization of Iterable." I have vaguely gathered from discussions on IRC that it has to do with reclaiming resources when traversal of a collection terminates? The following is probably related to my question. There are some odd-looking function definitions in TraversableLike.scala, for example: def isEmpty: Boolean = { var result = true breakable { for (x <- this) { result = false break } } result } I assume there's a good reason that wasn't just written as: def isEmpty: Boolean = { for (x <- this) return false true }

  So I'm comfortable with the basic concept of CQS, where you might have a command that writes to one database, and that updates the query database that you read from. However, consider the scenario where you are entering data, and want to prevent duplicates. Using new employee data entry an employee register as an example, working through a pile of application forms to key in the new employees' details: Take top sheet. Key in employee name and unique payroll number to UI. Submit. Put paper in "completed pile". Repeat. How would you now prevent the user from keying in the same payroll number again, say for instance if they get distracted and can't remember whether they've keyed one in already and the "message" hasn't got all the way back to the query db for the user to search?

• Getting print data - Windows (Redmon)

  I am trying to develop an app to retrieve print data, edit its content and then print the data. I am using RedMon for that purpose. But all the tutorials I have seen online as of now relates to storing the data into a PDF using RedMon. I want to be able to configure RedMon on a windows platform such that it writes the entire print data(the data that is bound to appear on the printing paper) as it is into a .txt file or maybe provide directly as an input to the java app that I have made. I have been unsuccessful in finding a solution for this till now. Is this achievable?

• Are frameworks really necessary for beginners/intermediates? (PHP)

  I have been programming for around 6months and currently learning PHP/Mysql. I can create basic functionally sites starting from a plain sheet of paper. Is it necessary I use frameworks to create sites? Currently, everything I do is from scratch. I'll borrow codes from old codes, ask people for help, etc. Are frameworks going to help me much more? Is it alright if I put a site public without using a framework? (I have not looked a lot into frameworks, so my knowledge is limited, but I'm just curious)

  I wrote three classes for a colleague of mine (I'm new at this job). They compile just fine, but he tells me there are "defects, bugs, and style problems." He wants me to print the files out and mark the problems such as the standard coding conventions, best practices, format, design, and logic. I wrote this code when I was extremely tired and I plan to rewrite it completely. My mistake was showing to it before looking it over myself again. • Html + Css: How to create a auto-resizing rotated background?

  Hi, image a complete black web page. On this web page is a 100% size white div that fills the whole page. I'd like to rotate this div by -7 degrees (or 7 degrees counter-clock wise). This will result in the black background being visible in triangles on the edges, just like you had placed a piece of paper on a desk and turned it a bit to the left. Actually this can be done with some css and it's working quite well (except for IE). The real problem now is: I'd like to have a normal, non-rotated div element on top of that to display the content in, so that only the background is rotated. Rotating a contained div counterwise doesn't work though, because through the two transformations the text will be blurry in all browsers. How can I realize that? Best would be a solution workiing in current Webkit browsers, FF3.5+ and IE7+. If only IE8+ I could live with that too.

  Boy did I get an education looking into this. I guess I've been spoiled by Powerbuilder, which has fantastic functionality for this out of the box. Does anyone seriously write custom documentpaginator objects to handle reporting needs for their LOB apps? I want to be able to print "for free" and not have to code like crazy just to take whats on the screen and throw it on paper. How are people doing this?   I have read McCarthy's 1960 paper on LISP and found no reference to anything that's similar to user-defined macros or normal order evaluation. I was wondering when marcos first appeared in programming language history (and also in Lisp history): When was the idea of user-defined code transformation (before interpretation or compilation) first described (theoretically)? What was the first programming language implementation to have Lisp-like macros (by "Lisp-like" I mean "using a readable Turing-complete language to do code-transformation")? (including non-Lisps -- Forth for example is quite old, but I'm not sure if the first Forth implementation already had "IMMEDIATE") What was the first Lisp dialect to have macros? Thank you!

  First I am a complete novice and need answers in plain and simple terms. I am trying to get the users manual for my Samsung galaxy s4 phone. Samsung "help" sent me a link to click but when I received it it was in Spanish tho the doc I'd said "english". The Samsung support line timed me out because I couldn't type fast enough when I told them I received it in Spanish. I explored the translator and didn't see how to translate a doc. Asked Google how to get the manual they gave a different doc I'd and sent it to clipboards. How can I read it? Now what? Tried to send this message and asking me for a tag and I have no idea what that means so I just clicked one. That's why I need the manual so desperately. The constraints are: Laptop is out of battery and there are no free sockets. You're bored of the book you're reading or you have none with you. • Pomodoro technique & other ways to increase personal productivity? Any ideas?

  I recently came across Pomodoro Technique as a way to increase productivity, get in the zone, and in general feel a sense of accomplishment at setting some short programming goals and achieving them. So far I have enjoyed it and the sense of accomplishment I get after seeing a bunch of short goals add up at the end of the day to a lot of work done on a programming project. I'm looking for other ideas similar or not to the pomodoro technique to add a little variety to achieving goals, personal productivity, get in the programming zone, etc. Any ideas or techniques that are expressed formally such as in the pomodoro paper, that are not trite fluffy maxims?
