  • Two Column Theme, Help, to make both columns seperately Scrollable.

    Hey, I am not sure what to do on this one, I'm not a programmer, but trying to learn CSS as this is how the theme I am using was coded in. I've gotten quite far on my own, but this one stumps me Its two column Theme... As far as I have been able to get, I can use the following: #left { width: 235px; padding: 10px; margin-left: 20px; position: fixed; line-height: 15px; If I change the position to Absolute, The whole page scrolls, If I leave it at Fixed, and add lets say, a Twitter feed, or other type of text that takes me past its reading where you would normally scroll, Its just cut off, cannot get to it, hightlight or scroll.. I've also toyed with the idea, of changing the theme to a 3 column theme, but Again, not a programmer, and i'd be really confused. anyhelp would be great...     Hi, we are 5 developers working in an svn environment. every programmer can work on small bugs and commit whenever he wants. after the work has done, i want to give them the way to deploy to the production without considering the other programmers and their deployment. for example: while i am committing, other user is committing too but he did not finish to commit. his revisions 1,3 my revisions 2,4 if i will deploy the HEAD(4), ill also deploy his work. and i will deploy 2 and 4 i will include his files as well. how can i free every programmer to deploy his files only?   • Did you ever switch from one programming language to another?

    The stereotypical programmer is very keen on writing software in one particular programming language and is very fanatic about defending their programming language in any way they can, without being realistic about whether their programming language is the best tool for the job. The other kind of programmer can take a step back and switch between languages (or is not very concerned about doing everything in just one language), is a "jack-of-all-trades", and doesn't mind learning a new language as long as it solves their problem in a good fashion. Did you ever switch from one programming language to another? If yes, why? [P.S. Please don't just answer with "I switched from language A to B because company X sucks! I think it will be very useful to understand why people switch between languages, or what's the best tool for a particular kind of job]

  • Choose Your Own Adventure : BASIC Programming

    Hopefully this isn't considered too off-topic, but I guess we'll see. I'd love to find and frame a copy of this book. Years ago, in my pre-teen years, I remember reading a lot of CYOA books, and one in particular stands out in my mind as the book that started me down the path of becoming a programmer. The details are fuzzy, but what I remember was that the story involved a programmer who was held captive somewhere and was trying to escape. IIRC, each section or chapter had a short BASIC program you could could type into your computer to simulate something from the story. The one that stands out most in my mind was a very simplistic animation made with pipes, pluses, and dashes that "looked" like a metal grate that opened (sliding upward). I realize this is pretty scant information to go on, but I suspect that anyone else who read the book would immediately remember it. Maybe not, I guess we'll see. Again, my apologies if this is too far off-topic for S.O.

  • The best algorithm enhancing alpha-beta?

    I'm studying AI. My teacher gave us source code of a chess-like game and asked us to enhance it. My exercise is to improve the alpha/beta algorithm implementing in that game. The programmer already uses transposition tables, MTD(f) with alpha/beta+memory (MTD(f) is the best algorithm I know by far). So is there any better algorithm to enhance alpha-beta search or a good way to implement MTD(f) in coding a game?

  • TFS Auto Shelve - New Visual Studio 2010 / TFS 2010 Extension

    We've been working with the Visual Studio 2010 SDK and the TFS 2010 SDK a lot recently to create new Visual Studio Extensions. You can find these extensions in the Visual Studio Gallery. If you're a developer/programmer, you should check it out, they have some pretty cool tools out there. I'd be surprised if you told me you went there and couldn't find any tools that could help you. One of the new extensions Cory and I made is called TFS Auto Shelve. Check out the description and read about it below.   • Type Casting variables in PHP: Is there a practical example?

    PHP, as most of us know, has weak typing. For those who don't, PHP.net says: PHP does not require (or support) explicit type definition in variable declaration; a variable's type is determined by the context in which the variable is used. Love it or hate it, PHP re-casts variables on-the-fly. So, the following code is valid: $var = "10"; $value = 10 + $var; var_dump($value); // int(20) PHP also alows you to explicitly cast a variable, like so: $var = "10"; $value = 10 + $var; $value = (string)$value; var_dump($value); // string(2) "20" That's all cool... but, for the life of me, I cannot conceive of a practical reason for doing this. I don't have a problem with strong typing in languages that support it, like Java. That's fine, and I completely understand it. Also, I'm aware of—and fully understand the usefulness of—type hinting in function parameters. The problem I have with type casting is explained by the above quote. If PHP can swap types at-will, it can do so even after you force cast a type; and it can do so on-the-fly when you need a certain type in an operation. That makes the following valid: $var = "10"; $value = (int)$var; $value = $value . ' TaDa!'; var_dump($value); // string(8) "10 TaDa!" So what's the point? Can anyone show me a practical application or example of type casting—one that would fail if type casting were not involved? I ask this here instead of SO because I figure practicality is too subjective. Edit in response to Chris' comment Take this theoretical example of a world where user-defined type casting makes sense in PHP: You force cast variable $foo as int -- (int)$foo. You attempt to store a string value in the variable $foo. PHP throws an exception!! <--- That would make sense. Suddenly the reason for user defined type casting exists! The fact that PHP will switch things around as needed makes the point of user defined type casting vague. For example, the following two code samples are equivalent: // example 1 $foo = 0; $foo = (string)$foo; $foo = '# of Reasons for the programmer to type cast $foo as a string: ' . $foo; // example 2 $foo = 0; $foo = (int)$foo; $foo = '# of Reasons for the programmer to type cast $foo as a string: ' . $foo;

  • What have my fellow Delphi programmers done to make Eclipse/Java more like Delphi?

    I am a veteran Delphi programmer working on my first real Android app. I am using Eclipse and Java as my development environment. The thing I miss the most of course is Delphi's VCL components and the associated IDE tools for design-time editing and code creation. Fortunately I am finding Eclipse to be one hell of an IDE with it's lush context sensitive help, deep auto-complete and code wizard facilities, and other niceties. This is a huge double treat since it is free. However, here is an example of something in the Eclipse/Java environment that will give a Delphi programmer pause. I will use the simple case of adding an "on-click" code stub for an OK button. DELPHI Drop button on a form Double-click button on form and fill in the code that will fire when the button is clicked ECLIPSE Drop button on layout in the graphical XML file editor Add the View.OnClickListener interface to the containing class's "implements" list if not there already. (Command+1 on Macs, Ctrl + 1 on PCs I believe). Use Eclipse to automatically add the code stub for unimplemented methods needed to support the View.OnClickListener interface, thus creating the event handler function stub. Find the stub and fill it in. However, if you have more than one possible click event source then you will need to inspect the View parameter to see which View element triggered the OnClick() event, thus requiring a case statement to handle multiple click event sources. NOTE: I am relatively new to Eclipse/Java so if there is a much easier way of doing this please let me know. Now that work flow isn't all that terrible, but again, that's just the simplest of use cases. Ratchet up the amount of extra work and thinking for a more complex component (aka widget) and the large number of properties/events it might have. It won't be long before you miss dearly the Delphi intelligent property editor and other designers. Eclipse tries to cover this ground by having an extensive list of properties in the menu that pops up when you right-click over a component/widget in the XML graphical layout editor. That's a huge and welcome assist but it's just not even close to the convenience of the Delphi IDE. Let me be very clear. I absolutely am not ranting nor do I want to start a Delphi vs. Java ideology discussion. Android/Eclipse/Java is what it is and there is a lot that impresses me. What I want to know is what other Delphi programmers that made the switch to the Eclipse/Java IDE have done to make things more Delphi like, and not just to make component/widget event code creation easier but any programming task. For example: Clever tips/tricks Eclipse plugins you found other ideas? Any great blog posts or web resources on the topic are appreciated too. -- roschler
