• Dell V105 printer and OS X 10.6

  I am trying to get a Dell V105 printer to work with my iMac. It is running 10.6 and I have installed all the drivers on the Snow Leopard disk. I believe there is no official Dell driver but I have also heard the Dell printers are made by third parties that may sell the same printer under different names. There a quite a few Lexmark models that seem to look very similar and I have tried setting the driver to the 2600 series that looks very similar but that has not enabled me to print. Although it claims to give me the supply levels correctly. Can anyone help? Thanks for your time

• Amazon EC2: how to find out detailed CPU usage?

  I am running several EC2 instances, and I want to know the exact work my CPU is doing. On "normal" machines I am doing this with munin and its CPU plugin which looks at the statistics provided by /proc/stat. On my EC2 machines however, I get incorrect graphs. The machine has two cores, so the max CPU usage should be 200% - however it gets as high as 400%: I know that I should use Amazon CloudWatch to see the total CPU usage (and this is the official and recommended from Amazon way to do this), but I am specifically looking on how the CPU usage is spend (e.g. system, user, iowait). Is there a way to get detailed CPU usage statistics on EC2 instances?

• Excel cutting out down over 1024 characters

  I am using Excel 2003 to save a large file as a CSV. But when saving cells that contain over 1024 characters, it cuts out the characters beyond 1024. Per a previous question, I am using this official macro to save: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;291296&Product=xlw This macro in question is probably causing it, since I'm not using the normal Save As (in order to put quotes around every field). It may not be 1024 characters, but long cells are getting cut off. What in this macro is causing that?

  Hi, I want to install DisplayLink on an embedded Windows XP device. The problem is that the setup starts and asked for my approval and after I confirmed it nothing happend. The setup just dissapear. On the official DisplayLink site there they say that they dont support embedded system but there must be a way to get this working on it. So I am searching for a tool to see what the setup is trying to open or what the preerequisite of it are to install it and try to get this working. Thanks for you help

• why skype is not available on messengers like pidgin

  i really like pidgin, empathy etc. (especially pidgin) because they gather all accounts like xmpp, msn etc. together except skype. i know skype uses a proprietary protocol but so does msn and it is available on pidgin. is it that hard to "put" skype on pidgin or alike messengers? what is the reason that skype is not implemented in pidgin? note: i know there is a plugin for pidgin to support skype but it requires the official skype client to be installed and running. pretty useless.

• 2010 MBP HD speed sanity check?

  I have a 2010 MBP with the 7200 rpm hard drive. I was copying a 2.1GB file, and noticed read/write speeds of around 20MB/s. Is that reasonable? Seems slow to me.... What is the proper way to benchmark a HD on OS X? Googling I see xbench, but that hasn't been updated in years. I also see some guides for using the command line. The goal would be to benchmark my drive and then compare the results to some official scores that the drive should be getting.

  I have router Draytek Vigor 2100VG at home almost in the center of it. The farthest point at my home is my balcony, ~12m from it. I have constant wifi signal range problems with some of my devices, but not with others. Notebook Lenovo W510 - no problems Nokia Home Music - always on 10m - no problems Sony PS3 - always on 7m - no problems Sony tablet S - problems around 6m Sony PSP - problems around 8m Sony PS Vita - problems around 8m Nokia E63 - problems around 8m I'm curious why my Notebook don't have any problems even on the balcony? I guess it has better hardware or uses more power for transmission. This information is really important when you want to buy new device/computer, so my real question is: Can device wifi range can somehow be found/suggested from official hardware technical specification? If not Is there some web page with wifi range reviews?

We place it at %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\OurProgram*.* We now encounter a few cases in larger companies, where users do not have write permission to %ALLUSERSPROFILE%. Most of these cases are running Windows 7. The problem does not occur on a normal desktop installation of Windows 7 though. What is the recommended policy for this location? I have not found any "official" information about this. Is there a different location where all users have write permission?

I am guessing that the original author of this setting wants it to be executed every one hour. And I cannot find the official meaning of this setting in the crontab man page. Hence please help. • Second Monitor "Input Not Supported"

  I have two identical monitors (new Acer s211hl) with a native resolution of 1920x1080. When enabling dual monitor support in Windows 7, the primary monitor works as expected, but the second monitor says, "Input not Supported" and fails to display anything. If I change the resolution of the second monitor to 1440x900, it works as expected. Likewise, if I set it to 1920x1080 with a refresh rate of 30hz, the monitor displays video. However, neither of these are solutions, because the output looks very blurry, and the content is stretched. I am using the following hardware: Monitors: Acer s211hl Motherboard: Asus F1A75M-Pro CPU/GPU: AMD A8-3850 with integrated Radeon HD 6550D graphics I suspect that there is probably an issue with the integrated graphics or motherboard not being able to output to two 1920x1080 monitors, but I am hoping for official confirmation.

  My ever-growing interest in computers is making me ask deeper questions, that we don't seem to have to ask anymore. Our computers, at boot, as far as I understand it, are in text mode, in which a character can be displayed using the software interrupt 0x10 when AH=0x0e. We've all seen the famous booting font that always looks the same, regardless of what computer is booting. So, how on earth do computers output graphics at the lowest level, say, below the OS? And also, surely graphics aren't outputted a pixel at a time using software interrupts, as that sounds very slow? Is there a standard that defines basic outputting of vertices, polygons, fonts, etc. (below OpenGL for example, which OpenGL might use)? What makes me ask is why OS' can often be fine without official drivers installed; how do they do that? Apologies if my assumptions are incorrect. I would be very grateful for elaboration on these topics!

• Drupal + GMap macro, map markers not displayed

  Hi. I've run into a strange problem in the GMap module for Drupal. When I display a map inside a node using a GMap macro, everything is displayed correctly (according to what I specify in the macro or leave at default), save for map markers. I'm trying to specify a map marker, but it refuses to be displayed. My macro is the following: [gmap zoom=17 |center=53.77420697757659,20.474138259887695 |markers=big blue::53.77420697757659,20.474138259887695] I was unable to find any help on Drupal forums, both the official one and one local to my country.   We're migrating an LAOP server to Win 2k8 IIS7 MSSQL and PHP (WIMP?) at work, and I'm using the opportunity to clean up the PHP. Currently it doesn't use PDO, and I'd like to rewrite the PHP to use that instead. Challenge is, I don't know much about MSSQL and PHP deployment on Windows. The official MSSQL PDO object is experimental / depreicated and recommends PDO-ODBC. Microsoft just announced a driver supporting PDO. Is there no other PDO driver? How does SQLSRV contrast with PDO-ODBC?

• Extensions disappear when I close and open Google Chrome

  I am running the latest version of Google Chrome 23.0.1271.97 (Official Build 171054) m on Windows 7. Any new extension I install simply disappears(not disabled, total disappearance) once I close and re-start google chrome. This is not happening to one of my old extension. It stays there across chrome re-starts. I tried everything google help suggested- I created new user profile by renaming the Defaults folder I checked for any permission change that the extensions might have undergone. This is not the case. I am not running in developer mode. This happens when I close ALL instances of google chrome. Even if one instance of chrome is running, this doesn't happen. But I cant have an instance of Google Chrome always running :( I even reported the issue to Google Chrome team to no avail and new.crbug.com is offline. And I skimmed through many threads opened for the same issue only to find souls like me. SE is my last resort :)

  Hi I have a multiservices sagem router which supports wifi as well, the pack came up with a default wifi configuration key and a WEP Key in the label of the package like this: WIFI Configuration key: abcd1234 WEP Key: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now, when i execute the wifi usb wizard in the official cd, it asks me for the WIFI key, i put the abcd1234 & it says it's incorrect, i try the long WEP key and it says that the key should only have 8 characters. When i go to the control panel of the router in the wifi config, i see that: Open Authentification System WEP 128 Bit Passphrase: C4H2F167C10263AEB98V52920E Now since the wizard only accepts 8 characters, i try to change the 128bit to 64bit and put some 8 characters and it ends up saying that the new key should be 5 or 13, or 10-26 hex numbers. What to do? Thanks

• Apply email retention policy to Inbox but not subfolders?

  Our official email policy states that email older than 90 days in the Inbox is moved to Deleted Items, not including subfolders of the Inbox. This wasn't a problem to implement in Exchange 2003. In 2010, however, it appears that Policy Tags applied to the Inbox also apply to its subfolders. How can I prevent this from occuring? I also installed zabbix from sources. b. What about new software releases providing enhancements: is it better to keep the release installed from the repositories /compiled or is their a 'best practice' like downloading the new software release and compiling it again (I really have no clue)? • Using the same local folder for Dropbox and Skydrive

  Ever since I switched to windows phone I've sorely missed having an official dropbox app. Recently I've toyed with the idea of moving all my crucial files to SkyDrive instead. I have more storage on SkyDrive and the WP SkyDrive integration is very handy. I'm thinking about having both cloud sync services point to the same local folder for the first few weeks. That way if I want to go back its an easy task (and I can keep using dropbox's superior public folder) Has anyone else done this? Are there any potential issues (permissions, conflicts etc)

I would like to create and manage folder in the mail app. I noticed that it is sync to my gmail label. - this feature is not possible in the native mail app, neither in the official gmail app - the only way to do it is to use a pc or a mac (with the gmail desktop version) - in the gmail mobile web version, I cannot find any button to force desktop version. • Reinstall default apps on Galaxy S3 before updating to Jelly Bean [migrated]

  I want to update my Galaxy S3 to Jelly Bean but after downloading the firmware using Kies, it starts updating, but then it stops with a "dead" Android with a red triangle icon. I think it's because I have removed some default apps like ChatOn and Yahoo widgets. Is there any way to get them back or to install the official Jelly Bean update without a factory reset? I don't want to reinstall my apps again and lose my settings each time I need to update the OS (I also don't want bloatware apps that are pre-installed). Any ideas?

  I would like to set a network connection as metered. I can't find how to do this; it seems to have changed in the upgrade from Windows 8 to 8.1. I tried following the steps in the official metered connection FAQ. However, when I open the connection, there is no Data Usage heading nor a Set as a metered connection option. I tried this on two different computers, both running Windows 8.1. I also tried doing this for both wireless and ethernet adaptors. Here's what the connection screen looks like. • Sysprep.exe completely missing on both of my Windows 7 64bit machines. How should I find a workaround?

  The sysprep.exe file is simply missing on my Windows 7 64bit machine. I tried to find it on another computer, but it wasn't found there either. I can't understand it, because on a lot of forums and even in the official articles there are a lot of references to this tool. I've checked system, system32, sysWOW64 folders, and even made a full search with Total Commander. I only found a sysprep folder in the system32 folder, but inside was only an en-US subfolder, which was empty. Then I thought I will give my Windows PE bootdisk a try, which I've created a while ago. No result, only the same empty en-US folder is present there as well. Please if anyone knows what's happening, point me to the right direction. I need to clone my system and I'm stuck right at the first step...
