• Sending Big Files with WCF

  I had to look into a project that submits large files to WCF service. Implementation is based on data chunking. This is a good approach when your client and server are not both based on WCF, bud different technologies. The problem with something like this is that chunking (either you wish it or not) complicates the overall solution. Alternative would be streaming. In WCF to WCF scenario, this is a piece of cake. When client is Java, it becomes a bit more challenging (has anyone implemented Java client streaming data to WCF service?). What I really liked about .NET implementation with WCF, is that sending header info along with stream was dead simple, and from the developer point of view looked like it’s all a part of the DTO passed into the service.   My question is, who are software design engineers? And, what is the meaning of the following statement (from a software design engineer job ad)? "Application domain knowledge is essential and....." What is application domain? SDLC? My hope is to become a software engineer one day (OK, to be honest, more than that. I need to be a legend), that who do programming (They say this job has no programming). I am following final year of my Bsc(Hons) in computing and I have completed a foreign diploma, majoring software engineering - Java technologies. Will this job experience help me out to get a job in my desired position, which is mentioned above, after the degree? Wikipedia and google never gave a clear straight forward answer!! Please help!

• Windows Embedded Compact 7

  I’m back from Seattle where I attended the MVP Summit and presented the Windows Embedded Compact 7 training materials during the Train The Trainer in Bellevue (many thanks to all the people attending and providing great suggestions to improve the materials!). The MVP summit was a great chance to discover new things about all the different technologies, to see old friends and meet new ones. The TTT location (Microsoft training facilities at Lincoln square in Bellevue) was great and here’s the landscape that the attendees could enjoy (partially ruined by my presence in the foreground!). • Implementing Silverlight Coverflow with ADO.NET/WCF Data Services in SharePoint 2010

In this video, I show how you can implement Silverlight Coverflow like UI using the Telerik silverlight toolset. In this demo, I talk to a picture library running in SharePoint 2010, and use ADO.NET Data Services to load up the various images loaded in the picture library. I then use the Telerik Silverlight toolset  integrated with the ADO.NET Data Services/WCF Data Services, and show a fancy coverflow like UI.   Focusing on the broader Oracle community, Oracle South Africa initiated its first skills development programme in May 1988. Since its inception the programme has developed and improved and every year more graduates are taken on board. The Oracle Graduate Programme is made up of specific learning paths designed around customer, partner and Oracle specifications and is structured to meet the urgent skills requirements in the Oracle “economy”. The training programmes have a specific duration and incorporate both theoretical and practical application of Oracle product sets. • The Ins and Outs of Effective Smart Grid Data Management

  Oracle Utilities and Accenture recently sponsored a one-hour Web cast entitled, "The Ins and Outs of Effective Smart Grid Data Management." Oracle and Accenture created this Web cast to help utilities better understand the types of data collected over smart grid networks and the issues associated with mapping out a coherent information management strategy. The Web cast also addressed important points that utilities must consider with the imminent flood of data that both present and next-generation smart grid components will generate. • Don’t Program by Fear, Question Everything

  Perusing some code base I’ve recently came across with a code comment that I would like to share. It was something like this: class Animal { public Animal() { this.Id = Guid.NewGuid(); } public Guid Id { get; private set; } } class Cat : Animal { public Cat() : base() // Always call base since it's not always done automatically { } } Note: All class names were changed to protect the innocent. To clear any possible doubts the C# specification explicitly states that: If an instance constructor has no constructor initializer, a constructor initializer of the form base() is implicitly provided. Thus, an instance constructor declaration of the form C(...) {...} is exactly equivalent to C(...): base() {...} So in conclusion it’s clearly an incorrect comment but what I find alarming is how a comment like that gets into a code base and survives the test of time. Not to forget what it can do to someone who is making a jump from other technologies to C# and reads stuff like that.

• Technical Computing Initiative, Jim Gray and a Virtual Framed Letter on my Wall

  Today Microsoft announced their Technical Computing Initiative, a program to help scientists and engineers take advantage of the latest breakthroughs in parallel computing, bandwidth increases, and technologies that will make doing scientific research akin to using spreadsheets (as opposed to writing really complex custom code).  This is actually the culmination of work that the late Jim Gray, formerly a technical fellow at Microsoft, was working on. I didn't really know Jim, and frankly only...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?   As the number of "visual" OS's such as Android, iOS and the promised Windows 8 are becoming more popular, it does not seem to me that we programmers have new ways to code using these new technologies, due to a possible lack in new visual programming languages paradigms. I've seen several discussions about incompatibilities between the current coding development environment, and the new OS approaches from Windows 8, Android and other tablets OS's. I mean, today if we have a new tablet, it's almost a requirement for coding, to have, for instance, an external keyboard (due it seems to me it's very difficult to program using the touch screen), exactly because the coding assistance is not conceived to "write" thousands of lines of code. So, how advanced should be the "new" visual programming languages paradigms? Which characteristics these new paradigms would be required?
