• Any opensource equivalent of virtual center?

• arp "who-has tell" on cloned machine

  I have a urgent problem to solve today, but I'm lost. Please help. I've cloned a Virtual Machine hosted on VM Ware ESXi 4.1 The OS is now Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, but at the time of cloning it was 10.04 LTS. I fixed the MAC address manually inside /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules. It is a known problem on Ubuntu. I had to remove the old MAC address and set the new one as eth0. Everything seems to work fine, except ARP. My provider OVH sent me a warning to resolve it today (this is the second day) or they will block my IP! The log contains many lines like this: Tue Jun 5 01:04:29 2012 : arp who-has 178.32.136.212 tell 178.32.136.224 where .224 is the cloned server that is causing problems, and .212 is the cloned one. arp -na returns: ? (178.33.230.254) at 00:07:b4:00:00:02 [ether] on eth0 ? (178.32.136.212) at 00:50:56:09:8e:f1 [ether] on eth0 The first IP is the ESXi machine. The second one should not be there. I'm not an expert and I don't know what else to do to fix this problem. Any help will be very appreciated. Thanks. • HP server delayed boot

  I'm currently using HP Proliant DL120 G5 servers running VMWare ESXi 4 to run server VM's. They are connecting to an iSCSI SAN for the shared storage. I'd like to implement a delayed boot of these hosts servers so that they don't boot up and try to connect to the SAN before the SAN is ready for connections after a power failure. Does anyone know of a good way to do this?

• Windows Server 2008R2 - can't change or remove the default gateway

  We've installed VMWare Server 2.0 on Windows 2008R2. After some time playing with it (actually only removing host-only and nat networks, and binding adapters to the specified vmnets) we've noticed a strange problem: if you change or remove the default gateway on the network card, the server completely loses a network connection you can't ping it from the subnet, it also can't connect to anyone. When the gateway is removed and a server tries to connect to the other machines, I can see some incoming packets using a sniffer, but I believe they are damaged in some kind (I'm not a mega-guru in TCP/IP and can't find a mistake in a binary translation of the packet) because the other side doesn't respond. What we tried: removed vmware server using add/remove programs deleted everything related to the vmware server and all installed network adapters in the windows registry double checked for the vmware bridged protocol driver file, it's physically absent and no any links in the registry. performed a tcp/ip reset with netsh and disabled/enabled all network adapters in the device manager to recreate a registry keys for them. tried another network adapter. and the situation is the same: as soon you remove or change the default gateway, windows stops working. The total absurd of the situation is that the default gateway points to the non-existing IP. But when it's set, you can ping a server from the subnet, when you remove it - you can't. Any help? I'm starting thinking the new build of the VMWare Server is some kind of the malware... :)

• Virtual LTSP server with KVM

  I want to setup a kvm-based LTSP appliance with Ubuntu 10.04 (server/desktop for ltsp) on a Dell PowerEdge 2900 for ~10-15 clients. People will mostly use Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice and Qcad. Does someone have any experience with this setup? I've had a similar setup with VMware Server 2 and Ubuntu 8.04. How good/bad is kvm compared to VMware for a LTSP appliance? Shall I stick with VMware or can I switch to KVM?

• Ctrl-Alt-Delete doesn't unlock PC when VMPlayer is on

  My desktop XP OS gets locked after I leave for x minutes. I have VMPlayer occupying full screen mode. I think the keyboard is redirected to VMWare. I press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and outer-machine XP is not unlocking. I think maybe keyboard is going to VMWare, because this seems to only happen when I have VMWare running. How do I unlock XP? Is there some magic key sequence?

  Hi, I have VMware installed on Fedora 13 (host OS) /amd 64bit. When I log to it from console VMware works good. I wanted to start remotely from OS X 10.6.3, so I installed NX client. Everything is fine with the keyboard layout if I do not use VMware. When I try to run the guest OS on VMware my keyboard is cut off completely. The host and the guest OSes are setup for "us" layout and for "generic 105 keys" keyboard.

• VM Build XML file fails to validate against OVF 1.0 schema

  For our product, we were trying to generate VM / vApp build XML from java code. For this purpose, we were using XML Beans. When we tried to generate JAVA classes for OVF envelope for 0.9 (ovf-envelope.xsd in schemas/ovf) it was successful. However these schemas does not allow us to add IPassignment section which is available in OVF 1.0. When we tried to compile 1.0 schema (ovfenv-vmware.xsd in schemas/ovf1.0.0e/vmware folder), we get validation errors. When we loaded this schema in schema editor we could see some validation errors. First error we saw was following: When we loaded ovfenv-vmware.xsd in XMLspy we could see following validation error in dsp8027.xsd - "cos-nonambig: makes the content model non-deterministic against . Possible causes: name equality, overlapping occurrence or substitution groups." Same error was also thrown by xmlbean while generating java classes from ovfenv-vmware.xsd. Is there any workaround for this problem?

• Mac OS X in Virtualbox says "You need to restart your computer"

  I've been trying to figure out for the past week how to get Snow Leopard reliably running in a VM. Right now I am using VirtualBox, and it runs fine for a while, but every once in a while (happened 3 times in the last few hours) I get the "You need to restart your computer" message. Unfortunately, it hasn't even lasted long enough to finish installing the operating system yet. I first tried VMWare, which was a pain to set up. I got it running ok, operating system installed, with the guest tools. Every once in a while though, it just stops running. I click inside the VM, and there's no mouse. It doesn't respond to keyboard input either. I have to reset the VM to get a response. I'm wondering if this is the same error. This happens with both Workstation and Player. • XP VM not detecting USB keyboard or mouse from Windows 7 host

  I've been using a Windows XP Pro VM (32-bit, SP3) for months on my work PC (Windows 7 64-bit) with no problems, with a PS/2 keyboard and a standard optical USB mouse. Today I copied this VM onto my home PC, which is also Windows 7 64-bit but with a G15 USB keyboard and MX518 USB mouse. For some reason the VM does not accept input from the keyboard or mouse, which makes it almost impossible to use. (Unity works but is not an option). Both my home and work PC are running VMware player 3.1.0. My keyboard and mouse show up as USB devices in the bottom-right of the VMware Player window, and if I click them I have the standard option to "Connect (Disconnect from host)". I have selected this option for the keyboard, and then the VM happily accepts keyboard input, but of course my host PC no longer does. It seems like VMware is seeing my keyboard and mouse as USB devices and not input devices. I've tried sending the keyboard input to the guest and reinstalling VMware Tools, but that achieved nothing. I'm certain it's a problem with the VM, and not the XP install, as I also can't use F12 to enter the VMware BIOS when the VM is powering up.

• When connected to VPN through Windows 7 running under OS X via VMWare Fusion, does traffic from the OS X side go through the VPN?

  I only have a rudimentary knowledge of VPNs. My understanding is that, in most network configurations, when a client is connected remotely to a VPN server, all network traffic passes through the VPN server before going to the client, and all data coming from the client passes through the VPN server before going out over the wider Internet. I run Windows 7 using VMWare Fusion under OS X Lion. If I access a web page in Safari, say, on the OS X side of things, does that traffic pass through the VPN server? Or does it bypass it because the two OS's are regarded as separate network devices by my LAN? I would appreciate any insight anyone can provide. Thanks.

Second question is how can I make the VMWare server with the GUI display to be full screen on my desktop ? Now when I resize the window its getting full screen but the Linux main window remain centered and small . and I like it to stretch full screen

  i noticed that some of my apps are in the background in unity-panel. the apps are vmware-workstation,jupiter, empathy this is what i mean as you can see on the left some of my apps are running but in the background if i didn't set my unity-panel to see-through i wouldn't have noticed it. if i restart my laptop and start empathy it doesn't go in the background and also when i run compiz --replace the apps are back in the foreground this happens a lot when i am working my apps are suddenly in the unity-panel background?

• Eject disk on Mac Pro running VMWare ESXi

  I'm almost embarrassed to ask this, but I'm stuck. I installed VMWare ESXi on a Mac Pro. It's working great! The problem is that you press F12 to eject the disk, and F12 is what you use to shutdown ESX. I can power down, open the case, pull out the CD drive and use a paper clip to force the drawer open, but that's kind of a pain. Any other way to do this?
