• Question about server usage, big community platform

  I’m working on a community platform writen in PHP, MySQL. I have some questions about the server usage maybe someone can help me out. The community is based on JQuery with many ajax requests to update content. It makes 5 - 10 AJAX(Json, GET, POST) requests every 5 seconds, the requests fetch user data like user notifications and messages by doing mySQL queries. I wonder how a server will handle this when there are for more than 5000 users online. Then it will be 50.000 requests every 5 seconds, what kind of server you need to handle this? Or maybe even more, when there are 15.000 users online, 150.000 requests every 5 seconds. My webserver have the following specs. Xeon Quad 2048MB 5000GB traffic Will it be good enough, and for how many users? Anyone can help me out or know where to find such information, like make a calculation?

• Command to determine whether a fullscreen application is running?

  I have a small shell script that plays a little jingle and displays a notification whenever I get a new email. The problem is that this shell script can get invoked anytime - including when I'm watching a DVD / video in fullscreen mode with the sound turned up quite a bit - which is quite annoying. I'd like to enhance this script with the ability to detect whether an application is in fullscreen mode. I know this must be somehow possible because notifications don't display under those circumstances. What command can I use?

• Google App Engine: How to be notified when APIs change or become available?

  I am thinking about writing a GAE app but am a little hesitant because the EULA gives Google full rights to change their APIs anytime they want, for any reason. Obviously, they'd be out of business quick if they just 'upped and refactored their entire APIs, so I have to imagine they have some kind of notification system, perhaps even an RSS feed, etc. to notify developers well in advance of looming changes, or new features coming out in future releases. However, for the life of me I can't seem to find any trace of the existence of such a notification system. Perhaps the Google forums is the only place to get such updates? I guess I'm asking any battle-worn GAE veterans for re-assurance that there are reliable ways of getting notifications about policy or API changes from Google such that I could react and make the necessary app changes without production breaking or impacting any clients. • wireless not showing up in network manager applet.

  there is only the wired connection option available when the menu drops down. i have installed a belkin wireless g card for my desktop. it has been used before on this version of ubuntu 10.10, but after upgrading it shows only wired networks. enable networking and enable notifications have both been ticked. still only wired networks coming. im using ubuntu 10.10 maverick meerkat on my desktop comp and im an absolute begginer at ubuntu. can some one please help me re enable wireless on my comp?

• TFS Backup Plan Wizard Tool

  With the release of the “September – 2010” TFS 2010 Power Tools, came an addition to the Team Foundation Server Administration Console.  This addition is the Team Foundation Backups Tree item.  The tool is used to create backup plans and to work with it you run through a wizard, just like you would in configuring TFS or any of the extensions it has. The areas covered through the tool include: Backup to a Network Backup Path, retention configuration. Under Advanced Options, the extension to be used for the Full and Transactional backups. The capability to include external databases, meaning, include the reporting databases and SharePoint databases as part of the plan. There are further options as you can see, that includes being able to define a task scheduler account, be able to set alerts for notifications on execution of the plans, and last the option to configure the schedule for the plan execution.  All in all a very good tool and great way to safeguard the investment you’ve made.

• Sometimes new windows don't come to the front when launched

  I'm using gnome shell with new ubuntu for few days now and have experienced really annoying behaviour with new windows. Sometimes when I use another window and press e.g. Alt Ctrl T to open new terminal window, I don't get this window being brought to front. Instead I get notification at the bottom that "New terminal window is ready to use". The same is with Pidgin being integrated with gnome shell (via extension). Every time I get new message, window pops up but doesn't show. I need to either Alt Tab it or click the notification. Is there any way to have new windows being always brought to front, and remove those annoying "Window is ready" notifications?   I am looking for an enterprise-grade service or a tool that can be used to scan / fingerprint websites and notify when major XHTML code changes are detected. The tool should be able to continuously scan thousands of websites and determine the percentage of HTML code that has been modified since the last run. And then either save the data where it can be easily accessed or send periodic notifications. I know of services like ChangeDetect.com, but they don't do markup only changes and instead focus on everything, including content. We don't really care about presentation content, because a lot of sites we need to cover are updated frequently with content.

  I’ve been gradually adding features to my utility that scripts the configuration of a SQL Server.  Since my last post I’ve added the following features: Skip any encrypted object in a database Script alerts, alert notifications and operators Script audits Always script model, master and msdb to capture any user-defined objects in those databases Logins are now scripted so that everything for a login is grouped together. There’s a second section in the logins that handles default databases.  In many cases a login’s default database is a mirror target and can’t be set.  This is now handled gracefully.  It also includes a separate section for all default databases so those can be quickly set in the event of a disaster. Script credentials Script proxy accounts Script database mail My goal is still to get everything outside a database scripted.  This release is enough that I can keep my mirror target servers in sync with their principals.

  We have IAppContext which is injected into ViewModel. This service contains shared data: global filters and other application wide properties. But there are cases when data is very specific. For example one VM implements Master and the second one - Details of selected tree item. Thus DetailsVm must know about the selected item and its changes. We can store this information either in IAppContext or inside each concerned VM. In both cases update notifications are sent via Messenger. I see pros and cons for any of the approaches and can not decide which one is better. 1st: + explicitly exposed shared proerties, easy to follow dependencies - IAppContxt becomes cluttered with very specific data. 2nd: the exact opposite of the first and more memory load due to data duplication. May be someone can offer design alternatives or tell that one of the variants is objectively superior to the other cause I miss something important?

• Chameleon effect not working after update

  I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 since it came out and so far didn't have any problems with it. But after I updated (via Update Manager) it yesterday, after every reboot, the launcher color defaults to a blue dash, workspace and trash icon and the rest is black. If I set the wallpaper again manually, then it changes color as its supposed to (chameleon). Any idea why this is? Its really annoying to change your wallpaper every time you logon just to get the "normal" launcher. EDIT The chameleon effect works perfectly for notifications. Only the Launcher and Dash are not changing the color. Thanks.

• HTML5 Input type=date Formatting Issues

  One of the nice features in HTML5 is the abililty to specify a specific input type for HTML text input boxes. There a host of very useful input types available including email, number, date, datetime, month, number, range, search, tel, time, url and week. For a more complete list you can check out the MDN reference. Date input types also support automatic validation which can be useful in some scenarios but maybe can get in the way at other times. One of the more common input types, and one that can most benefit of a custom UI for selection is of course date input. Almost every application could use a decent date representation and HTML5's date input type seems to push into the right direction. It'd be nice if you could just say:<form action="DateTest.html"> <label for="FromDate">Enter a Date:</label> <input type="date" id="FromDate" name="FromDate" value="11/08/2012" class="date" /> <hr /> <input type="submit" id="btnSubmit" name="btnSubmit" value="Save Date" class="smallbutton" /> </form> but if you'd expect to just work, you're likely to be pretty disappointed. Problem #1: Browser Support For starters there's browser support. Out of the major browsers only the latest versions of WebKit and Opera based browsers seem to support date input. Neither FireFox, nor any version of Internet Explorer (including the new touch enabled IE10 in Windows RT) support input type=date. Browser support is an issue, but it would be OK if it wasn't for problem #2. Problem #2: Date Formatting If you look at my date input from before:<input type="date" id="FromDate" name="FromDate" value="11/08/2012" class="date" /> You can see that my date is formatted in local date format (ie. en-us). Now when I run this sadly the form that comes up in Chrome (and also iOS mobile browsers) comes up like this: Chrome isn't recognizing my local date string. Instead it's expecting my date format to be provided in ISO 8601 format which is: 2012-11-08 So if I change the date input field to:<input type="date" id="FromDate" name="FromDate" value="2012-10-08" class="date" /> I correctly get the date field filled in: Also when I pick a date with the DatePicker the date value is also returned is also set to the ISO date format. Yet notice how the date is still formatted to the local date time format (ie. en-US format). So if I pick a new date: and then save, the value field is set back to: 2012-11-15 using the ISO format. The same is true for Opera and iOS browsers and I suspect any other WebKit style browser and their date pickers. So to summarize input type=date: Expects ISO 8601 format dates to display intial values Sets selected date values to ISO 8601 Now what? This would sort of make sense, if all browsers supported input type=date. It'd be easy because you could just format dates appropriately when you set the date value into the control by applying the appropriate culture formatting (ie. .ToString("yyyy-MM-dd") ). .NET is actually smart enough to pick up the date on the other end for modelbinding when ISO 8601 is used. For other environments this might be a bit more tricky. input type=date is clearly the way to go forward. Date controls implemented in HTML are going the way of the dodo, given the intricacies of mobile platforms and scaling for both desktop and mobile. I've been using jQuery UI Datepicker for ages but once going to mobile, that's no longer an option as the control doesn't scale down well for mobile apps (at least not without major re-styling). It also makes a lot of sense for the browser to provide this functionality - creating a consistent date input experience across apps only makes sense, which is why I find it baffling that neither FireFox nor IE 10 deign it necessary to support date input natively. The problem is that a large number of even the latest and greatest browsers don't support this. So now you're stuck with not knowing what date format you have to serve since neither the local format, nor the ISO format works in all cases. For my current app I just broke down and used the ISO format and so I'll live with the non-local date format. <input type="date" id="ToDate" name="ToDate" value="2012-11-08" class="date"/> Here's what this looks like on Chrome: Here's what it looks like on my iPhone: Both Chrome and the phone do this the way it should be. For the phone especially this demonstrates why we'd want this - the built-in date picker there certainly beats manually trying to edit the date using finger gymnastics, and it's one of the easiest ways to pick a date I can think of (ie. easier to use than your typical date picker). Finally here's what the date looks like in FireFox: Certainly this is not the ideal date format, but it's clear enough I suppose. If users enter a date in local US format and that works as well (but won't work for other locales). It'll have to do. Over time one can only hope that other browsers will finally decide to implement this functionality natively to provide a unique experience. Until then, incomplete solutions it is.   I'm installing the Bitnami Redmine stack (redmine + subversion). Firstly I install configure and test it locally (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS). And everything is OK. I install Bitnami stack on server (Red Hat 4.4.7-4) and configure SVN. I commit files into SVN and connect project into Redmine with SVN repository, but when I try see it Rredmine displays 404 error.   I think that this question already questioned, and probably the answer is here: http://wiki.developers.facebook.com/index.php/Notifications.send but the real problem is that facebook says: Facebook discontinued support for this method March 1, 2010. Calling this method returns error code 3 -- Unknown method. while, I couldn't find any other JS-api for the invitation, anyone know how we can invite users, using the JS api or the .net api? thanks.

I tried using a ModelForm and overriding the save() method, but the form's self.cleaned_data and seld.instance already have the new values of the fields.

• Salesforce/PHP - Bulk Outbound message (SOAP), Time out issue

  Salesforce can send up to 100 requests inside 1 SOAP message. While sending this type of Bulk Ooutbound message request my PHP script finishes executing but SF fails to accept the ACK used to clear the message queue on the Salesforce side of things. Looking at the Outbound message log (monitoring) I see all the messages in a pending state with the Delivery Failure Reason "java.net.SocketTimeoutException: Read timed out". If my script has finished execution, why do I get this error? I have tried these methods to increase the execution time on my server as I have no access on the Salesforce side: set_time_limit(0); // in the script max_execution_time = 360 ; Maximum execution time of each script, in seconds max_input_time = 360 ; Maximum amount of time each script may spend parsing request data memory_limit = 32M ; Maximum amount of memory a script may consume I used the high settings just for testing. Any thoughts as to why this is failing the ACK delivery back to Salesforce? Here is some of the code: This is how I accept and send the ACK file for the imcoming SOAP request $data = 'php://input'; $content = file_get_contents($data); if($content) { respond('true'); } else { respond('false'); } The respond function function respond($tf) { $ACK = <<<ACK <?xml version = "1.0" encoding = "utf-8"?> <soapenv:Envelope xmlns:soapenv="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/soap/envelope/" xmlns:xsd="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema" xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"> <soapenv:Body> <notifications xmlns="http://soap.sforce.com/2005/09/outbound"> <Ack>$tf</Ack> </notifications> </soapenv:Body> </soapenv:Envelope> ACK; print trim($ACK); } These are in a generic script that I include into the script that uses the data for a specific workflow. I can process about 25 requests (That are in 1 SOAP response) but once I go over that I get the timeout error in the Salesforce queue. for 50 requests is usually takes my PHP script 86.77 seconds. Could it be Apache? PHP? I have also tested just accepting the 100 request SOAP response and just accepting and sending the ACK the queue clears out, so I know it's on my side of things. I show no errors in the apache log, the script runs fine. Thanks for any insight into this, --Phill
