• No option for keeping installed programs when upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 8

  (Related : How can I upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and keep my files and applications? ) I'm trying to upgrade my Windows 7 Pro (msdnaa) to Windows 8 Pro (msdnaa). The Windows 8 is the final version (I don't have access to previews on msdnaa anymore). As you can see on the related question accepted answer, Windows 8 should give an option to keep installed programs. But it does not. The only available options are "Keep only personal datas" and "Nothing". Any idea ? I'm running with SP1. I've got two partitions (one of them only contains data of a virtual machine). • Cloning Windows 7 installation from MBR to GPR drive and make it bootable

  I've seen threads on similar topics - such as this one - but the answers never seem to solve how to make it bootable. I have Win 7 64-bit on a PC installed on a 2tb MBR volume. The motherboard is UEFI compatible. I just installed a secondary internal 3TB drive which will be partitioned as GPT. Is there a relatively easy way to clone my installation over to the new drive and have that drive be bootable? I have used EaseUS Partition Master to clone the C volume to the D volume, but that would not boot and I assume the issue is that one is MBR and one is GPT. Is there a process to do this?

• USB DVD Drive not recognised in Windows 7

  I have an external DVD drive (USB) which I'm trying to attach to a notebook but it's not recognised by Windows 7. I can see the device in the control panel, says it's working properly but doesn't show up in the explorer window so can't access it. I've got a dual boot with Ubuntu and it shows up fine in there, no problems so I know the drive and connection are fine. Have tried the upper and lower filters but no success. Thanks for any help you can provide.

The first is an 8GB configured with 4GB for ReadyBoost. I'm using Windows 7 RC 7100 and was wondering if using more than one ReadyBoost drive helps?

  I have an Acer Aspire 3500WLMi laptop. It currently has a 40gb hard drive which I would like to upgrade. Could someone talk me through the process? I've listed my concerns/queries... Can I buy and install any 2.5" SATA or IDE hard drive into this machine? Should I buy somesort of USB caddy and clone my existing drive onto the new one via USB then physically swap the drives over? My current disk is partitioned to include a small amount of space for a Ubuntu install. Will a clone keep the current partition sizes or is it best for me to repartition once I've cloned? • Windows 7 Locks Up or Blue Screens after installing additional hard drive

  I've had my home theater pc for over a year now and it's been running with no problems what so ever. I got myself a new Seagate 2 TB hard drive for the holidays and ever since installing it the pc now randomly locks up or blue screens either upon putting it to sleep or waking it from sleep. The only thing I've tried so far is updating the firmware on the hard drive. The hard drive in question is this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4846365). I do have my minidump file saved off on my home theater pc however right now I'm at work and don't have access to it. Please help! Thank you!

What impact on hdd (non SSD, just plain hdd with all mechanical parts inside) has vertical position/ Does it decrease life of hdd? Is it more prone to data errors?

  I'd like to sync my music from my internal hard drive to an external hard drive. Windows Media Player doesn't recognize my USB external hard drive as a syncable device. If I plug in any USB flash drive, it shows up as a device, but I can't seem to get it to recognize my external hard drive. Per some googling suggestions, the only suggestion I came across was to try enabling the "Portable Device Enumerator" service, but that yielded no luck. Is there any way to sync my music from WMP to an external hard drive?

• Disable "Turn off hard disk after" in windows 7

  How can I disable this feature? In the power options apparently I can only choose the minutes and I don't see a "Off" option. If I set it to 0 minutes, it sets itself to 1. For now I set it to 20000000 minutes, but a real solution would be nice.

• Formatting a memory stick with two partitions?

  I have a 16GB memorystick which used to have a Linux partition. It therefore has two partitions; 2GB FAT32 and 14GB linux boot drive. The linux part stopped working, so I decided to reinstall it. But windows can't see that partition. I tried formatting the whole disk, but I can only format one partition (the FAT32). There seems to be no way to combine the two partitions into one big one, and there seems to be no way for windows to partition the large part of the memorystick to but Linux on it. In the windows partition manager, windows sees the large unused partition, and it let me delete it. But once I have deleted it, I'm not allowed to format it. Also I cannot delete or resize the small partition. So, to summarize: I have a memorystick with two partitons. Windows only sees one of them, and won't let me use the other one. I would like to combine the two partitions so I can install Linux on the memory stick again.

  I have a windows 7 box stashed away in my closet, containing (among other things) 2 big HDDs linked together as a mirrored volume - basically a super lazy NAS / media server. I've noticed that when that drive is accessed (whether locally, on the machine itself, or remotely, from another computer, or my xbox, for example) there's a noticeable pause, and then from the computer itself, a 'click!' noise, after which the drive is accessed; e.g. open \\computername\shared\, wait 2 seconds, hear 'click!' and then see files appear in windows explorer. Any ideas? Otherwise the drive preforms normally - is it a windows thing? a HDD-about-to-die thing? Or a "yeah that always happens, you've just never noticed it before" thing?

  Scenario: Old hdd is a Seagate 320gb SATA drive New hdd is a WD 320gb SATA drive Created an exact clone and replaced old hdd with new hdd. Boot up with new hdd, it gets into Windows 2003 server environment but things look weird. Lots of system event failures in the event viewer log. System is barely unusable, critical services are all down. Boot up with old hdd, everything is fine. QUESTION: Is it possible to do a simple clone of a Windows 2003 server system? All I'm changing is the hard drive, everything else stays the same (old CPU/old mobo/etc..)

• Mapped network drive missing from My Computer and Explorer

  On a Windows XP Pro SP3 machine one network drive refuses to show up in My Computer or Explorer. The missing drive letter is G:, if that matters. Other mappings work fine. Other profiles one the same machine have no problem seeing G:. I can access the G: just fine typing it into the address bar or in CMD shell. I've used TweakUI to toggle hide/show G: with no difference. TweakUI says G: should be visible. I've logged off,on between toggles to make sure the settings are taking effect. I've looked at reg key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer] and made sure it's zero'd.ref We've limped along with this broken setup for some time, just working around it, but some applications do not allow typing in a path when choosing a place to save files and it's reached the point where it's intolerable. So, anyone have any idea why XP won't show this drive letter? or how to fix it?

• USB HD Freezes Windows Explorer

  I recently purchased a "Seagate STBX1000200 1TB Expansion 2.5 inch External Hard Drive". It has been working without problems until recently. When i plug the device into a USB port the device is recognised as it appears in the device manager but when i go to Windows Explorer and try to open it (or right click on it) it hangs/freezes windows explorer. Please note i am using Windows 7 Professional. I have already tried various things without success after searching for people with similar problems. I did read that it could be a problem with how the computer assigns a drive letter. But whrn i go to disk management (when running as an administrator) it hangs and displays the following message: Connecting to virtual disk service I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer some advice.   I know it has been discussed before several times that it is not possible to start an application from an usb drive when connecting it due to limitations of autorun (or autoplay??) in Win 7. But it is possible to create a scheduled task having On an event type trigger and surely there must be an event occurring when the drive is connected. Does anybody have the slightest idea which Event ID should I use? Or at least what type of event? There are too many logs to pick from.

• No USB 04b4:0307 mike input after 10.04

  I am using an USB phone that is in fact a so-called "sound card" based on the 04b4:0307 chip. In fact, I have two different phones using 04b4:0307 and in fact I have a sound USB key too. This, I believe, is the start of why they call 04b4:0307 "ubiquitous" (instead of oh four bee...). But not "eternal". The mike worked in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.04 but not later ([email protected]). "not working" means that 04b4:0307 shows in Sound Preference but that its vu-meter is mute. I have posted the full lsusb and the result of tests in various systems here: http://www.papou.byethost9.com/tmp/1043601.html Note: Tests done on VirtualBox (thankfully). But UbuntUnity no longer works on VB, so I used the LinuxMint equivalent. ?hat's fate. I could not find any problem report close enough. What should be my next step? I believe the problem occurs in module snd-usb-audio. One thing I might try if I knew how is hacking a DEB with its 10.04's source. I can hack DEBs. Any hint welcome on how to make a DEB overriding a kernel packed module. I mean that the newly installed module should have precedence, be loaded instead, the module installed with the kernel. TIA !

• Attempting to install netgear N300 Wireless USB Adapter on Ubuntu without a present internet connection

  Hello Linux/Ubuntu world out there. I don't have internet presently on the desktop I am trying to install the USB wireless adapter on. This seems to be the problem, which if the hardware would work would theoretically fix the problem. I can NOT access the internet via anything but wireless. I am presently on my laptop searching for answers while trying to install this little device. So any advice will have to take that into account. Now I have tried so far, using WINE which does not want to work, I have tried Windows Wireless Drivers which doesn't want to work, I have tried Software Sources, Other Software and it will not acknowledge the cdrom as a repository stating errors like E:Unable to stat the mount point /cdrom/ -stat (2: No such file or directory) However I can open the CD icon on my computer and access and browse the files. The computer can read the CD. I can read the CD. I've tried just plugging it in and seeing if the computer will automatically recognize the hardware, and go from there. That does not work either. I have tested USB port to just verify that the USB port works. It does. My laptop recognizes the hardware, and would easily install the software if I prompted it to. The difference is that my laptop is Vista, and I HATE Vista. Any tips, tricks?

• HTC Android device mounted as USB drive is read-only unless I'm root

  When I connect my HTC Incredible S to my Ubuntu 10.10 system as a USB drive, the device seems to mount OK, but is read-only unless I access it as root. For example, if I run nautilus, I can't drag and drop files to the SD-card in the phone, but if I run sudo nautilus I can. I have USB debug support set on the phone (Applications > Development > USB debugging) and I have added a rule for the device in /etc/udev/rules.d/51-android.rules on my Ubuntu system. Any suggestions as to how I can mount the drive so that I can copy content to the SD card without needing to sudo? Update Following advice from waltinator, I added the following line to my /etc/fstab: UUID=3537-3834 /media/usb1 vfat rw,user,noexec,nodev,nosuid,noauto However, the Android device is still being auto-mounted on /media/usb1 with uid and gid root. • Blank pale blue screen with Live USB Kubuntu on AMD Sempron 2800+ processor

  I am trying to install Kubuntu onto a USB stick to use on my Acer Aspire 1362 laptop with an AMD Sempron 2800+ chip. Using Windows XP, I downloaded and saved to the laptop's hard drive: kubuntu-2.04.1-desktop-i386.iso from the GetKubuntu website and LinuxLive USB Creator 2.8.16.exe from the Linux live website I then installed the latter and ran it, installing the kubuntu onto the Memory stick. Leaving the Bios setup unchanged, the USB stick is ignored and Windows boots. If I change the Bios boot order so that the memory stick takes precedence, I see a dark blue screen announcing Kubukntu 12.04, and on selecting either “live Mode” or “Persistent mode”, messages flash by quickly, some of which appear to be error messages, including “trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs”, “cannot allocate resource for mainboard”, “no plug and play device found”. Eventually I see a pale blue screen with four moving dots announcing Kubukntu 12.04, similar to the login screen of my Kubuntu desktop, but no invitation to log in or indeed any dialog. After several minutes, this changes to a black screen with more messages including “no caching mode present”, “ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready”, then degrades to a blank pale blue screen which can only be moved by switching the computer off. Finding no way to log the error messages passing by, I managed to photograph most of them, but know no way to attach the photo to this forum. As suggested by User 68186 (to whom thanks!), I have edited my original post to reflect the recent progress, so the following two comments are now superseded.

• USB device is recognized but has no address

  Good day folks, I'm trying to use a USRP1 with GNURadio if anyone knows what any of that is. I am running Ubuntu on a Windows 7 machine via VMware player. When I connect this USRP1 via USB 2.0 drive to Windows 7 it is recognized as Ettus Research LLC USRP1... When I connect the device to Ubuntu through VMware, it shows: usb device fffe:0002 on my removable devices. When I run lsusb I receive the following: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0e0f:0003 VMware, Inc. Virtual Mouse Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0e0f:0002 VMware, Inc. Virtual USB Hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID fffe:0002 When I run this program that comes with the USRP driver... uhd_find_devices I receive: -------------------------------------------------- -- UHD Device 0 -------------------------------------------------- Device Address: type: usrp1 name: serial: 00000000 So when I run this program, it does recognize the fact that this device is connected. However, the device has no address, no name, and has a null serial. I need to know the device address so I can run more programs in GNURadio. Does anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks!

• Can't boot from USB - 11.04 / Exopc

  I can't find the answer to this anywhere. I am new to Ubuntu, please help! I have a wetab, except now I don't, because I put Ubuntu 10.10 over the top of it (meant to dual boot, but that's another story). I upgraded to 11.04 out of curiosity. It's good, but not for touchscreen tablets - no multi touch for example. I want to get back the wetab OS now. I have all the files, and I have a bootable gparted USB stick. The problem is I can't seem to boot from USB. The "wetab" PC is actually an ExoPC, so it has only the hardware button and a soft button in the top corner. Using the wetab OS method of reaching BIOS with the hard and soft buttons doesn't work now, I only get a menu asking if I want to run Ubuntu in recovery mode, run a limited command line, or do a memory check. I need to either repartition the drive so I can dual boot with WeTabOS, or just wipe over Ubuntu and start again. How do I do this? I have also tried hammering F11, Del, F8, F1, many other combinations! Edit: I do have access to USB keyboard and mouse

• Multiple Issues - USB booting Ubuntu 12.04

  I've been using a Ubuntu 12.04 off a bootable USB stick so I can have a portable OS. Also, OS variety. I've been using it for a while and I'm still have a few issues. First and most annoying, it often lags/freezes. I'm not sure what word you would use for it, windows will often stop working and go dark/not responding from anywhere between 10 seconds to a full minute and on some occasions, even longer. However, the window eventually starts working again. Similarly, sometimes the whole system will freeze, not just the window. The mouse will still move, but nothing will work. No clicking, no menus, not keyboard shortcuts. Again, it will usually start working. I'm liking Ubuntu a lot, but those issues can make it annoying to use sometimes. For example, it will ALWAYS freeze at some point if I try to watching a Youtube video and I'll have to wait for a minute or so until it starts responding, again. Aside from the lag/freezing, anytime I download packages, it will always say "package operation failed" when it's done, though it does seem to download/install. Another issue I'm having is with shutting down. If I open the logout/shutdown menu and click shutdown, it just logs me out and takes me to the login screen. If I try shutting down through the login screen, it won't do anything. As if I didn't even go to it. I've been using the terminal to reboot or shutdown when I need to. I've looked around for answers for all of these problems and still have yet to find a solution that works. Are these just normal issues with USB booting? I haven't installed Ubuntu to any computers, I've always done USB booting.

• USB ports not working on Xubuntu 12.04 LTS

  Basically, my USB ports on my IBM Thinkpad T43 have stopped working most of the time. Sometimes, they mount and appear in Nautilus, but other times, they aren't recognized. The timeline of events on this laptop for the past few months: Started having problems after using a USB port hub. The port would sometimes work but would be fixed with the occasional reboot. Re-partitioned/Expanded my Xubuntu partition (I have a Windows XP/Xubuntu dual boot). Now the majority of the time, the USB fails to recognize devices. In addition, the few times they are recognized, the device may suddenly disconnect. Things I've noticed: The devices still receive power from my computer (I can charge my ipod..etc..) I can't understand dmesg outputs. I don't know if lsusb is telling me anything useful. My dmesg output is here: http://pastebin.com/KdNxHcFC Things start to get weird at the bottom of the file. • Poor performance after reinstalling to a USB drive

  I am currently running Ubuntu 11.10 off of a SanDisk 16GB USB. I installed it using a Live USB with the following partition configuration: 6GB Primary /dos FAT32 5GB Logical / ext4 5GB Logical /home ext4 I don't have a hard disk, and don't see myself getting one anytime soon. I rely solely on this 16GB, and two other 4GB USBs, one of which I used as the LiveUSB. I bring the USBs around, and even use the install at work. I previously used an install that used a swap file. It functioned fine for the most part, save for a few slow moments, but I came across this post, and it got me thinking about my USB's life, so I reinstalled with the current config. My problem now is that it is slower. Applications like Firefox would hang more often. In my previous setup (the automatically partitioned setup), Firefox would start hanging if I was running an unzip or install task on the same partition as /. Now however, it would hang if I had another window open i.e. the system settings window. My guess is that it may have something to do with the swap file or the install being on a Logical partition rather than a Primary partition, but I don't know. Any insight as to why it has slowed down?
