  I'm installing a new server after this weekend, and it musth have both windows server 2008 r2 and linux (probably ubuntu) running, but I'm wondering which one of them I should run virtual. Windows will be used mostly for rdp and for serving asp.net webpages, linux will host some django-applications and a postgreSQL server etc.

• Where does $PATH get set in OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard?

  I type echo $PATH on the command line and get /opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/Users/andrew/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/usr/local/pear/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/opt/local/bin:/usr/local/git/bin I'm wondering where this is getting set since my .bash_login file is empty. I'm particularly concerned that, after installing MacPorts, it installed a bunch of junk in /opt. I don't think that directory even exists in a normal Mac OS X install. • Pidgin To Shoretel Call Manager IM

  Is anyone out there using Pidgin to connect with Shoretel's Instant Messaging? Shoretel 9.2. According to one of the docs I found on Shoretel's website, it should be connecting as a SIMPLE client but so far no dice. It keeps getting an error resolving the server. There's no proxy involved that I know of. I was just wondering if anyone else had this particular configuration and if they'd made it work correctly.

I know you need to contact them directly and you can't do it online, but I'm wondering how difficult it is to do? And what are the chances that Apple will do this for me?

  I sent an email, but immediately got a reply saying: Final-Recipient: rfc822;[email protected] Action: failed Status: 5.0.0 (permanent failure) Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 5.1.2 - Bad destination host 'DNS Hard Error looking up smtpint.xxx.edu (MX): NXDomain' (delivery attempts: 0) I was wondering what this error report means, where in the delivery route the error happened, who should be contacted to solve this issue and how to solve it? Thanks and regards! I also appreciate if someone can explain a bit more about the mechanism behind the email delivery.

  I have a IIS7/ASP.NET application running with the following configuration: Anonymous authentication (IUSR). Application Pool running as a domain account If IUSR is denied the "logon locally", then it appears that ASPX pages will still render their HTML, but static content such as images will not be delivered. I'm wondering what the technical reason is for this? If IUSR is "broken", why will a request to an ASPX page be passed down the pipeline and executed, but IIS will refuse to serve an image in the same directory?

  Hi Since a few days when I start Windows Vista i get a Popup from "Encrypting File System" (coming from process efsui.exe) asking me to backup the certificate and key. I don't know what i did to get this message (The last SW i did install was google desktop). Now i'm wondering what directories or file are encrypted with EFS. Is there a way to found out?   I'm trying to install drivers for my laptop after fresh install of Windows 8. From the manufacturer's website, there are many drivers and utilities available. But after running Windows Update(which finds drivers for the hardware on my laptop), I only had to install a few (the ones with Unidentified Device) I'm wondering if this is good enough? or would I skip some important drivers like Chipset Thermo management etc etc that could potentially cause harm to my laptop?

  hi, I am building a PC to act as a file server among other things, and I was wondering whether it is a good idea to create 2 partitions on the RAID 5 array, one for OS one for data, or to have a separate disk for OS and use array for data. Also, one day i may want to add another disk to the array, so would there be any issues if I had the OS partition on the RAID5 array when it came to resizing the data partition?

• Ruby on rails gems and win 7

  I have a networked home share (at work). This is my HOMEPATH,HOMESHARE,etc. When I installed the rails gem and other the .gems folder was created there (which is on a network drive) and consequently any code that needs a gem or a gem lookup is slow. And I'm wondering which environment variables need to be corrected. I've googled this but most results are dealing with cygwin so any ideas? Thanks

• What does the filesystem give me?

  I'm writing a specialised database. It currently sits atop of ext4, with one big file that it reads and writes to. I'm wondering whether it would be worth forgoing the filesystem and reading and writing directly to the device. I already use O_DIRECT, so as far as I can tell it wouldn't require much of a code change. What might the risks, advantages and disadvantages of forgoing the filesystem be? Is it likely to improve performance, or harm it?

• Is bigger capacity ram faster then smaller capacity ram for same clock and CL?

  I know that bigger capacity hard-drives with the same RPM are faster then smaller capacity hard-drives. I was wondering if the same is true for ram. Given two ram clocked at 1600mhz and with identical CLs: 9-9-9-24. Is a 2x8 going to perform better then a 2x4 ? Note that I am not asking if having more ram will improve the performance of my PC, I'm asking if the bigger capacity ram performs better. Thank You.

• Implement DNS filtering

  I was wondering what would be the best way to implement DNS filterting. The scenario is this: we need to setup two custom DNS servers to use on our company's computers so that we can filter DNS requests for certain domains and return custom IPs and forward other requests to our ISPs DNS servers. We were thinking about using either PowerDNS or MyDNS because they support MySQL out of the box and we need to change the list of domains to filter quite often. Thanks a lot for your help! :)

• MySQL UNHEX to text

  I have a forum application that stores data about users in MySQL. There's a field called 'password' of type 'varbinary(100), with the function UNHEX, and then a string of hexadecimal characters. I was wondering how secure this was, so I googled around trying to find how to convert it to text, and I couldn't find anything. So my question is as follows: Is it possible to convert this to text? How would one go about doing this?
