  • SSE2 - SSE4.2 Compatibility

    Hello. I am considering the purchase of some software (AutoCAD) that requires the CPU to support SSE2. My PC's CPU is an Intel® Core™ i5-650 Processor, which supports SSE4.2. Basically what I am wondering is if SSE4.2 is simply a newer version of SSE2, so that it would be fullly backwards compatible. Thanks.

  • How can I open an .xps file in Evince?

    On projects.gnome.org I read that evince/Document Viewer supports xps-files. But when I try to open an xps-file I get the error message Unable to open documentFile type Zip archive (application/zip) is not supported Reading "the full list of supported document formats" on live.gnome.org I can't find xps there. Now I ask myself (and you): Isn't Document Viewer able to open xps-files, or is there something wrong with that xps-file I try to open? I specifically want to do this with Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric. The PPA ppa:medigeek/evince-xps has no solution for 11.10, and the xpstopdf utility mixes up the letters from my xps file totally - the new pdf then isn't usable. I want to see a solution for Evince or Gnome in general, not get a recommendation for a KDE application like here.

  • Windows Server 2008 hangs up while booting

    Windows Server 2008 hangs up while booting after Windows update applied several updates. The server is a virtual instance on a Server 2008 Hyper-V host. Other virtual servers are fine, but have not been updated. The normal boot shows the horizontal barber poll forever. When I do a safe boot it also hangs up. With a "Please Wait..." after loading many '.sys' files. The last successfully loaded file listed is: '\Windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys' That is the extent of what I have been able to determine.

  • Linux Fiber Channel Host Setup Basic

    I've been googling for about 4 hours now with no luck. I am trying to setup a Linux server running Oracle Server 6.3 as a Fiber Channel host. And then connect it to a Dell Compellent Fibre Channel Host contain a 500GB Volume. The Oracle server itself contains two Brocade 815 FC HBAs. I've discovered their WWN(I think) via cat /sys/class/fc_host/host1/port_name 0x100000051efc3d85 cat /sys/class/fc_host/host2/port_name 0x100000051efc3d9f The next part is where I am at a loss. I've used iSCSI before...is FC the same deal where you have an initiator and a target? If so where do I specific that in linux? I'm also new to Fiber Channel as a protocol, so i am unsure what is needed to make a transaction? WWN and port ID? Similar to IP:Port combination in the Ethernet world. I've read alot regarding using systool, multipath, fc_transport commands, however none of these is recognized as a valid command from Oracle Server 6.3 Appreciate the guidance and assistance.   • Determining Serial Driver Supported Baud Rates

    Hello. How can I determine the baud rates supported by my serial driver? My driver details (from the Device Manager) follow, but they do not seem very helpful. I am writing an application that is crashing because I am apparently attempting to to set COM1 to an unsupported baud rate, so I need to know which baud rates the driver does support. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.   • Server 2008 Active Directory DNS Entries Deleted. Dcdiag unable to contact local AD controller.

    I've never seen anything like this. At a potential customer site, I noticed that the PC's were all unable to locate the domain controller and netlogon was failing. I fixed the DNS entries on the client PC's so the AD server was DNS server and tried to rejoin the domain. The PC was unable to locate the domain controller. On the server, I checked the DNS settings and while there is the high level AD folder, every single entry related to Active Directory appears to have been completely deleted. There are no backups from what I can tell and this has been happening for 6 months at least. Does anyone have any recommendations for repairing this? Thanks.

  • Minimum permissions needed to create a user Home Folder in Windows Active Directory

    We would like the Help Desk to have the responsibility of creating User Home folders instead of our 2nd level support. The help desk global group is already an Account Operator, so in Active Directory they are able to edit all User Attributes just fine. The problem is figuring out the minimum level of permissions needed on the File Server to create the home share, with out giving them access to everyone home share. So if they open AD Users and Computer, open the properties for a user, and enter \home\users\%username% in the profile tab and then click OK, they get the following error. The \home\users\username home folder was not created because you do not have create access on the server. The user account has been updated with the new home folder value but you must create the directory manually after obtaining the required access right. Right now I have given the Helpdesk group Full Control on the root folder only (no files or subdirectories) The directory is actually created, but the permissions on the newly created folder only show administrators full control, and no permissions for the configured user account. It sure sounds like I'd have to make the helpdesk local admins on the file servers, which is what I'd like to avoid. Especially since the file servers are a large cluster hosting much much more than the entire orgs home share structure.

    I would like to pick up some really fast USB flash drives in the 16 - 64 GB range. When looking at drives they just list their size, their form factor (key chain hook, slider, etc.) and the fact that they are all Hi-Speed USB 2.0. It seems like I have heard that different drives have different performance and life expectancy. The sales guy tells me that they are all the same performance any more, but it wouldn't be the first time a sales guy had the wrong technical details. Our objective is to run Virtual PC images off of them, so good speed and resilience to rewrites it important.

  • What is the harm in giving developers read access to application server application event logs?

    I am a developer working on an ASP.NET application. The application writes logging messages to the Windows event log - a custom application log just for this application. However, I do not have any access to testing or staging web/application servers. I thought an admin could just give me read access to this event log to help in debugging problems (currently a service that is working in dev is not working in test environment and I have no idea why) but that is against my client's (I'm a consultant) policy. I feel silly to keep asking an admin to look at the event log for me. What is the harm in giving developers read access to application server application event logs? Is there a different method of application logging that sysadmins prefer programmers use? Surely, admins don't want to be fetching logging messages for developers all the time.

I have a top-down game and I want to implement a gun which shoots bullets that follow a simple path (no physics nor change of trajectory, just go from A to B thing). a: vector of the position of the gun/player. b: vector of the mouse position (cross-hair). w: the vector of the bullet's trajectory. So, w=b-a. And the position of the bullet = [x=x0+speed*time*normalized w.x , y=y0+speed*time * normalized w.y]. Also, is it possible that Gdx.input.getX() gives me non-precise position? Because when I draw the cross-hair it also draws off the cursor position.   • 13" MacBook Pro with Win 7 and External VGA gets 640x480

    I have a brand new 13" MacBook Pro - 2.26 GHz and the NVIDIA 9400M Video card. I installed Windows 7 (final) in boot camp and booted up to Windows 7. Installed all the drivers from the Apple disk and it was working great. Then I attached the external VGA adapter (from apple) to connect to a projector and it dropped down at 640x480 resolution. No matter what I did it wouldn't let me change to a higher resolution if the external VGA was connected. Once it disconnects then it goes back to the normal resolution. If I am booted into Snow Leopard it works fine. I tried updating the NVIDIA drivers and it behaved exactly the same. Ultimately I want to get 1024x768 or better resolution when connected to an external display. If it isn't fixable then I am curious if anyone else has seen this, if it is a known issue, and who to contact for support (Apple, Microsoft or NVIDIA?) Update: Just attaching the Mini-DVI to VGA adapter kicks it into 640x480, no projector is required. I tried forcing the display driver from Generic PnP Monitor to one that supported 1024x768 and that didn't work either.

However when it is a failed login attempt it does not show the user name that tried to log in in the logs?   • Application Does Not Start in Windows 7

    I recently installed a new 60GB SSD as my primary hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I then installed SSD Fresh from Abelssoft to optimize Windows to run on the SSD. It seemed to install okay, but when I try to run the utility, its splash screen appears briefly before it quietly closes. No errors are displayed; the utility just fails to launch. I have run SSD Fresh on another SSD-equipped Windows 7 Pro x64 computer in the past without any problems. Does anyone know what might be preventing the program from running? I tried running sfc /scannow from the command line (with administrator privileges), shutting down the Spybot Resident, and disabling the firewall and virus scanner. I also tried running the tool as administrator; I even tried reinstalling it, running the installer as administrator. No luck.   • SQL 2005 Log Shipping - Was working, now isnt!

    Hello, I had log shipping working between two SQL 2005 server fine. I suspect that a job was added to the source server which backed up the transaction log to disk (nothing to do with the existing log shipping job). As I understand it, if you do this then log shipping will fail to work. Sure enough, it no longer works. I've deleted the job which had just been created. Log shipping still does not work. I've rebooted both servers and, again, Log shipping does not work. I'm at a loss now... all I get is the folloing error: The log shipping secondary database XXXXXXXXXX has restore threshold of 45 minutes and is out of sync. No restore was performed for 5882 minutes. Restored latency is 15 minutes. Check agent log and logshipping monitor information. Any help appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Right now I have a single mail server for IMAP. Let's say I want to introduce Exchange but not all users will be on it. Some users will be on my "legacy" IMAP, others on the "new" Exchange. Is it possible to "split up" your users (from the same e-mail domain) on two services like this? What would the MX records look like? My guess is that this isn't possible, but thought I'd ask. By the way, I realize that Exchange can offer IMAP and all that, but my question is more about splitting users across services and the MX records. The actual protocols above are only examples.

  • How to enable caching on Apache / Ubuntu Linux?

    I have a large (several megabytes) XML file that's updated rather frequently (every 10 minutes or less) and gets a lot of traffic. I'd like to implement some caching to reduce bandwidth and server load. Looking at the Apache documents, I see a dizzying array of configuration options that involve various combinations of mod_expires, mod_headers, and mod_cache (and variants). I end up running in circles and the results aren't what I expect. I'm comfortable editing the various configuration files if I have some idea what I'm supposed to change. But at the moment I'm poking around in the dark and that's never a comfortable feeling. So, perhaps if I describe what I want, somebody here can take me by the hand and say, "This is what you need to do." Periodically, this file, call it "stuff.xml" is updated and a new version copied to the directory. The external url would be, for example, http://example.com/stuff.xml. Understand, this part works. Whenever I request the file, I get the expected result. But the file is big and I want to save bandwidth, so first I'd like to implement conditional GET semantics with the If-Modified-Since header. How do I do this? I've enabled mod_headers and mod_expired and added the <FilesMatching> section in my httpd.conf as recommended in countless examples I've seen online, but that didn't change the behavior when made a conditional GET request. I always get a status 200 with the entire document. So how the heck do I implement this? That'll cut down on neeless transfers. I'd also like to limit the amount of data transferred. Seeing as this is XML, gzipping it should save me 50% or more. My next step would be to somehow gzip the file and, if it's not too difficult, store it in memory. That'll cut down on per-access data transfer, and also reduce disk transfers. So how do I implement this type of caching? Thanks in advance.
