• How do I access admin shares on windows 2008 r2?

  I am not able to access admin file shares on a Windows 2008 R2 box, if I'm logged in as a user who is part of the Administrators group. The only way I can access those shares is if I use the built in Administrator account. How can I configure the server to allow any administrator to access the file system via admin shares? Btw, this works with Windows 2003. By admin shares, I refer to: \192.168.1.4\c$ or \192.168.1.4\e$

  I am faced with an unsettling situation. A friend of my father's has rather suddenly become a widower. Naturally they've taken care of the bank accounts and all the normal mundane things that people have been doing for a century or so. However, she was the computer user of the household. He was aware that they had some online banking stuff and bill paying stuff ... and that she spent lots of time on FaceBook and stuff like that. However, he doesn't know what her local passwords were (actually only vaguely aware that her couple of desktop and couple of laptop system even had passwords). He's never heard of "admin" passwords so that's no good either. In the past I've used KNOPPIX and the old LinuxCare "bootable business card" to recover NT passwords. I've never done this with MS Windows Vista. So, I'm looking for the best advice on how to do this. Naturally I do have physical access to the systems (the two laptops are charging across the room from me; and her old desktop systems are, naturally, still back at his place). Getting it right is much more important than fast or easy (I don't want to mess up those filesystems and possibly lose some photos or other stuff that he or his kids or grandkids will want). (BTW: if anyone things this is some social engineering hack to play upon the sympathies of the community to get the information I'm asking for ... think about it for a minute. I know about IRC and the "warez" boards. I know I can find this stuff out there if I dig enough. I'm just asking here because it'll hopefully be faster and, secondarily to raise awareness. As more of us put more of our lives online ... as we get older and as places like FaceBook continue to widen the appeal of computing to a broader segment of older people ... we are, as computer nerds, going to see a lot more of this. Survivors will needs us to be careful, sensitive and ethically responsible as they try to recover those bits of legacy during their bereavement. I can now tell you, first hand, it sucks!)

• Tunneling a public IP to a remote machine

  I have a Linux server A with a block of 5 public IP addresses, 8.8.8.122/29. Currently, 8.8.8.122 is assigned to eth0, and 8.8.8.123 is assigned to eth0:1. I have another Linux machine B in a remote location, behind NAT. I would like to set up an tunnel between the two so that B can use the IP address 8.8.8.123 as its primary IP address. OpenVPN is probably the answer, but I can't quite figure out how to set things up (topology subnet or topology p2p might be appropriate. Or should I be using Ethernet bridging?). Security and encryption is not a big concern at this point, so GRE would be fine too -- machine B will be coming from a known IP address and can be authenticated based on that. How can I do this? Can anyone suggest an OpenVPN config, or some other approach, that could work in this situation? Ideally, it would also be able to handle multiple clients (e.g. share all four of spare IPs with other machines), without letting those clients use IPs to which they are not entitled.

  I searched and searched and although it's a fair simple question, I don't find the proper answer but general ideas (which I already have). I have a top-down game and I want to implement a gun which shoots bullets that follow a simple path (no physics nor change of trajectory, just go from A to B thing). a: vector of the position of the gun/player. b: vector of the mouse position (cross-hair). w: the vector of the bullet's trajectory. So, w=b-a. And the position of the bullet = [x=x0+speed*time*normalized w.x , y=y0+speed*time * normalized w.y]. Also, is it possible that Gdx.input.getX() gives me non-precise position? Because when I draw the cross-hair it also draws off the cursor position. I saw a web site recently that listed a lot of different Freeware and Opensource appliations. There was a checkmark next to each one so you could select the ones you want, and then they would all download in a single package to install at one time. The idea was for when you were setting up after a fresh install. It was for Windows and they were adding 64-bit applications.

• Video encoding for archival

  I would like to archive some home videos (DV). I don't need to save them losslessly, but I would like to encode them in something high-quality. What format is both pretty indistinguishable from the original and will likely be readable 15 years from now? WMA makes me nervous, because it's only one company that makes it, and they're constantly coming out with newer formats. (VLC couldn't open my WMAs that Windows Movie Maker made.) Other things I've considered are h.264, Ogg Theora, DivX, and Xvid. I don't mind paying for something, but usually that means the format is owned by only one vendor.

I'm trying to segment my incoming traffic by page-type such that I can find out what percentage of traffic is going to zip code pages exclusively and what percentage is going to city/state level pages. I basically want to filter by URL structure to find out what percentage of total traffic zip code pages account for. The reason for doing this is to find out if Google Tag Manager can help with this? • Localized database for customers

  The company I work for, has just moved to AWS - and currently they have one very large central database with the instance currently located in America. However, one of their clients has requested that all of their data is held in the EU. So creating an AWS instance in Ireland isn't a problem, the problem is the database and how to manage it. We were considering having another database that runs in the EU for European customers, and use a different primary key step, so that the primary keys will never conflict in case the two locations need to be merged in the future. The problem is, if we have a customer that uses our system in both America, and the EU we would have to create 2 accounts for that user, and reporting across both regions would not be possible as the connection time would be too high. Is there an alternative to set this up?

It seems like this was a feature in control panel somewhere, but now I can't find it to turn if off. I know I used to use Tweak UI in older versions of windows to do this, and before that I could edit the registry . . . but it appears they changed it for Windows 7

  My computer recently had a hardware upgrade and now runs on Windows 7. I decided to install Ubuntu 11.04 as dual boot using the ISO I got from ubuntu.com downloaded onto my USB stick. Restarting with the USB stick, I was able to install Ubuntu 11.04 choosing the option: Install Ubuntu 11.04 side by side with Windows 7 (or something like that). No errors were encountered on installation. However on restarting, there was no GRUB; the system went straight into Windows 7. • Places Folders Open in Archive Manager

  Am relatively new to Ubuntu. Currently running 10.10, which was an upgrade from 10.4, which was an upgrade from 9.10, which was a fresh install. Have never compressed anything in Ubuntu, but because I wanted to use the contents of a large folder on a Windows machine, I installed 7zip. Using Places, I navigated to the folder I wanted to compress, right-clicked, chose Compress, selected 7-zip and started the compression. This took many minutes to complete (the final 7z file is over 2.2 GB), but when I copied it to the windows machine, 7-zip handles it fine. However, now when I open Places, the Home Folder, User folder, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos and Downloads all open the Archive Manager which gives an error message that it "Could not create the archive" because the "Archive type not supported." If I open Places/Computer choose the usr folder from places on the left and right-click/Properties on any of the folders, Music for instance, there is no place to change the "open with." Anyone know how to get this working again.

• Why does a Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc appear every time I connect to Windows Server 2003 SBS?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?
