• How to get full control of umask/PAM/permissions?

  OUR SITUATION Several people from our company log in to a server and upload files. They all need to be able to upload and overwrite the same files. They have different usernames, but are all part of the same group. However, this is an internet server, so the "other" users should have (in general) just read-only access. So what I want to have is these standard permissions: files: 664 directories: 771 My goal is that all users do not need to worry about permissions. The server should be configured in such a way that these permissions apply to all files and directories, newly created, copied, or over-written. Only when we need some special permissions we'd manually change this. We upload files to the server by SFTP-ing in Nautilus, by mounting the server using sshfs and accessing it in Nautilus as if it were a local folder, and by SCP-ing in the command line. That basically covers our situation and what we aim to do. Now, I have read many things about the beautiful umask functionality. From what I understand umask (together with PAM) should allow me to do exactly what I want: set standard permissions for new files and directories. However, after many many hours of reading and trial-and-error, I still do not get this to work. I get many unexpected results. I really like to get a solid grasp of umask and have many question unanswered. I will post these questions below, together with my findings and an explanation of my trials that led to these questions. Given that many things appear to go wrong, I think that I am doing several things wrong. So therefore, there are many questions. NOTE: I am using Ubuntu 9.10 and therefore can not change the sshd_config to set the umask for the SFTP server. Installed SSH OpenSSH_5.1p1 Debian-6ubuntu2 < required OpenSSH 5.4p1. So here go the questions. 1. DO I NEED TO RESTART FOR PAM CHANGS TO TAKE EFFECT? Let's start with this. There were so many files involved and I was unable to figure out what does and what does not affect things, also because I did not know whether or not I have to restart the whole system for PAM changes to take effect. I did do so after not seeing the expected results, but is this really necessary? Or can I just log out from the server and log back in, and should new PAM policies be effective? Or is there some 'PAM' program to reload? 2. IS THERE ONE SINGLE FILE TO CHANGE THAT AFFECTS ALL USERS FOR ALL SESSIONS? So I ended up changing MANY files, as I read MANY different things. I ended up setting the umask in the following files: ~/.profile -> umask=0002 ~/.bashrc -> umask=0002 /etc/profile -> umask=0002 /etc/pam.d/common-session -> umask=0002 /etc/pam.d/sshd -> umask=0002 /etc/pam.d/login -> umask=0002 I want this change to apply to all users, so some sort of system-wide change would be best. Can it be achieved? 3. AFTER ALL, THIS UMASK THING, DOES IT WORK? So after changing umask to 0002 at every possible place, I run tests. ------------SCP----------- TEST 1: scp testfile (which has 777 permissions for testing purposes) server:/home/ testfile 100% 4 0.0KB/s 00:00 Let's check permissions: user@server:/home$ ls -l total 4 -rwx--x--x 1 user uploaders 4 2011-02-05 17:59 testfile (711) ---------SSH------------ TEST 2: ssh server user@server:/home$ touch anotherfile user@server:/home$ ls -l total 4 -rw-rw-r-- 1 user uploaders 0 2011-02-05 18:03 anotherfile (664) --------SFTP----------- Nautilus: sftp://server/home/ Copy and paste newfile from client to server (777 on client) TEST 3: user@server:/home$ ls -l total 4 -rwxrwxrwx 1 user uploaders 3 2011-02-05 18:05 newfile (777) Create a new file through Nautilus. Check file permissions in terminal: TEST 4: user@server:/home$ ls -l total 4 -rw------- 1 user uploaders 0 2011-02-05 18:06 newfile (600) I mean... WHAT just happened here?! We should get 644 every single time. Instead I get 711, 777, 600, and then once 644. And the 644 is only achieved when creating a new, blank file through SSH, which is the least probable scenario. So I am asking, does umask/pam work after all? 4. SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO UMASK SSHFS? Sometimes we mount a server locally, using sshfs. Very useful. But again, we have permissions issues. Here is how we mount: sshfs -o idmap=user -o umask=0113 user@server:/home/ /mnt NOTE: we use umask = 113 because apparently, sshfs starts from 777 instead of 666, so with 113 we get 664 which is the desired file permission. But what now happens is that we see all files and directories as if they are 664. We browse in Nautilus to /mnt and: Right click - New File (newfile) --- TEST 5 Right click - New Folder (newfolder) --- TEST 6 Copy and paste a 777 file from our local client --- TEST 7 So let's check on the command line: user@client:/mnt$ ls -l total 8 -rw-rw-r-- 1 user 1007 3 Feb 5 18:05 copyfile (664) -rw-rw-r-- 1 user 1007 0 Feb 5 18:15 newfile (664) drw-rw-r-- 1 user 1007 4096 Feb 5 18:15 newfolder (664) But hey, let's check this same folder on the server-side: user@server:/home$ ls -l total 8 -rwxrwxrwx 1 user uploaders 3 2011-02-05 18:05 copyfile (777) -rw------- 1 user uploaders 0 2011-02-05 18:15 newfile (600) drwx--x--x 2 user uploaders 4096 2011-02-05 18:15 newfolder (711) What?! The REAL file permissions are very different from what we see in Nautilus. So does this umask on sshfs just create a 'filter' that shows unreal file permissions? And I tried to open a file from another user but the same group that had real 600 permissions but 644 'fake' permissions, and I could still not read this, so what good is this filter?? 5. UMASK IS ALL ABOUT FILES. BUT WHAT ABOUT DIRECTORIES? From my tests I can see that the umask that is being applied also somehow influences the directory permissions. However, I want my files to be 664 (002) and my directories to be 771 (006). So is it possible to have a different umask for directories? 6. PERHAPS UMASK/PAM IS REALLY COOL, BUT UBUNTU IS JUST BUGGY? On the one hand, I have read topics of people that have had success with PAM/UMASK and Ubuntu. Should I just give up? Would ACL solve all my problems? Or do I have again problems using Ubuntu? One word of caution with backups using tar. Red Hat /Centos distributions support acls in the tar program but Ubuntu does not support acls when backing up. This means that all acls will be lost when you create a backup. I am very willing to upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 if that would solve my problems too, but first I want to understand what is happening.

• Implement Semi-Round-Robin file which can be expanded and saved on demand

  Ok, that title is going to be a little bit confusing. Let me try to explain it a little bit better. I am building a logging program. The program will have 3 main states: Write to a round-robin buffer file, keeping only the last 10 minutes of data. Write to a buffer file, ignoring the time (record all data). Rename entire buffer file, and start a new one with the past 10 minutes of data (and change state to 1). Now, the use case is this. I have been experiencing some network bottlenecks from time to time in our network. So I want to build a system to record TCP traffic when it detects the bottleneck (detection via Nagios). However by the time it detects the bottlenecking, most of the useful data has already been transmitted. So, what I'd like is to have a deamon that runs something like dumpcap all the time. In normal mode, it'll only keep the past 10 minutes of data (Since there's no point in keeping a boat load of data if it's not needed). But when Nagios alerts, I will send a signal in the deamon to store everything. Then, when Naigos recovers it will send another signal to stop storing and flush the buffer to a save file. Now, the problem is that I can't see how to cleanly store a rotating 10 minutes of data. I could store a new file every 10 minutes and delete the old ones if in mode 1. But that seems a bit dirty to me (especially when it comes to figuring out when the alert happened in the file). Ideally, the file that was saved should be such that the alert is always at the 10:00 mark in the file. While that is possible with new files every 10 minutes, it seems like a bit dirty to "repair" the files to that point. Any ideas? Should I just do a rotating file system and combine them into 1 at the end (doing quite a bit of post-processing)? Is there a way to implement the semi-round-robin file cleanly so that there is no need for any post-processing? Thanks Oh, and the language doesn't matter as much at this stage (I'm leaning towards Python, but have no objection to any other language. It's less of an issue than the overall design)...

• OpenGL - drawing 2D polygons shapes with texture

  I am trying to make a few effects in a C+GL game. So far I draw all my sprites as a quad, and it works. However, I am trying to make a large ring appear at times, with a texture following that ring, as it takes less memory than a quad with the ring texture inside. The type of ring I want to make is not a round-shaped GL mesh ring (the "tube" type) but a "paper" 2D ring. That way I can modify the "width" of the ring, getting more of the effect than a simple quad+ring texture. So far all my attempts have been...kind of ridiculous, as I don't understand GL's coordinates too well (and I can't really understand the available documentation...I am just a designer with no coder help or background. It's an amusing effect but definitely not what I want. Other results included the circle looking exactly the same as the quad textured (aka drawing a sprite literally) or something that looked like a pop-art filter, by working on this train of thought. Seems like my logic here is entirely flawed, so, what would be the easiest way to obtain such a ring? No need to reply in code, just some guidance for a non-math-skilled user...

When sumNumbers is run and a < 10, it will throw immediatly an exception (although it doesn't seem to be very descriptive): Exception in thread "main" org.jmlspecs.jmlrac.runtime.JMLInternalNormalPostconditionError: by method MainClass.sumNumbers at MainClass.sumNumbers(MainClass.java:500) at MainClass.internal$main(MainClass.java:9) at MainClass.main(MainClass.java:286) or... Throw an exception. The exception can be as descriptive as I want. I'd also to check in the end of the function to see whenever the post conditions are true or not. Which would you use here and why?

• Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

  i know this is very much a "how long is a piece of string" type of question, however i have recently inherited a couple of applications that run as windows services, and i am having problems providing a gui (accessible from a context menu in system tray) with both of them. before you ask, the reason why we need a gui for a windows service is in order to be able to re-configure the behaviour of the windows service(s) without resorting to stopping/re-starting. my code works fine in debug mode, and i get the context menu come up, and everything behaves correctly etc. when i install the service via "installutil" using a named account (i.e., not Local System Account), the service runs fine, but doesn't display the icon in the system tray (i know this is normal behaviour because i don't have the "interact with desktop" option). here is the problem though - when i choose the "LocalSystemAccount" option, and check the "interact with desktop" option, the service takes AGES to start up for no obvious reason, and i just keep getting "Could not start the ... service on Local Computer. Error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion". incidentally, i increased the windows service timeout from the default 30 seconds to 2 minutes via a registry hack (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824344, search for TimeoutPeriod in section 3), however the service start up still times out. my first question is - why might the "Local System Account" login takes SOOOOO MUCH LONGER than when the service logs in with the non-LocalSystemAccount, causing the windows service time-out? what's could the difference be between these two to cause such different behaviour at start up? secondly - taking a step back, all i'm trying to achieve, is simply a windows service that provides a gui for configuration - I'd be quite happy to run using the non-Local System Account (with named user/pwd), if I could get the service to interact with the desktop (that is, have a context menu available from the system tray). is this possible, and if so how? any pointers to the above questions would be very much appreciated! thanks in advance for your help.

• squid3 auth thru samba using ntlm to AD doesn't work

  some users here are spending to much time exploring the WWW. So big boss whats to get this under control. We use a squid3 just for some security reason and chace benefits. and now i'm trying to set up a new proxy on a different server (Debian 6) Permissions are defined in AC and the squid3 should get the auth thru samba/winbind by using the ntlm protocol. but i'll get all the time Access, denited. it only works by using LDAP but thats not the way i need it. here some log and confs squid access.log 1326878095.784 1 192.168.15.27 TCP_DENIED/407 4049 GET http://at.msn.com/? So, why is no key being taken. How to make the query take references. Is it possible at all? 2. The other two tables td and u are using references. Any indexing needed in those? I think not.   Ok, I'm a C# ASP.NET dev following orders: The orders are to take a given dataset, shred the XML and return columns. I've argued that it's easier to do the shredding on the ASP.NET side where we already have access to things like deserializers, etc, and the entire complex of known types, but no, the boss says "shred it on the server, return a dataset, bind the dataset to the columns of the gridview" so for now, I'm doing what I was told. This is all to head off the folks who will come along and say "bad requirements".   Hi I have included the Barchart using AchartEngine API .When I swap the orientation of the screen the yaxis value is altered as same values. For eg. initially it is (0,10) , (10,25) but after swapping its changes to (0,10), (10,10) i could not understand why it is happening . And I have place string in x axis instead of numbers , I used addtextlabel method but the string is overlapped on the number . I need to display only the names. could you help on this.   I am building a C# client for a CGI service (not sure what its called exactly). It accepts a bunch of XML and spits out a response. I have tested it straight in Firefox and it works (see below). Now I am not sure how to do this in C# code though?   I've got a very weird bug which I've yet to find a solution. UPDATE see solution below What I am trying to do is convert a full size picture into a 160x120 thumbnail. It works great with jpg and jpeg files of any size, but not with png.   hey all, im really new to ASP.Net and still havnt got my head round most of the concepts, im really having problems with variable, when creating a desktop application, any variable created in code for example int n = 10; this variable will be there until the program is running right. but in asp iv created variables which are supposed to last until the user gets of that page, so for example say i have a page which takes the users value ( call this variable n say the user type in 10) and every time the user presses the next button the code add 10 to this value. so the first time the user presses the next button n= n + 10; what i have found is no matter how many times i press the next button n will always equal 20, because the previous value is not saved !! these values are populated the first time the user enters that page, once the user clicks the next button the content of these values disappear! how can stop this from happening ?? hope this makes sense !! thanks

• Wireless internet connection connects but internet does not work (no packets received). Wired does.

  When I connect my PC via ethernet cable to my ADSL router it works fine. When I connect via Wireless it connects and the internet will work for a random amount of time and then stop working. It stays connected with a strong signal but no packets are received. My laptop/iphone are right next to it and wireless works fine. If I open the Wireless USB status, it says it is connected to my SSID with full strength (54 mps - I am 3 meteres away from my router) and the activty shows as Packets 594 SENT and 105 RECEIVED (this goes up VERY slowly) I have tried the following: Turned off anitvirus and firewall completely. Tested the wifi signal- I am writing this on my laptop which is next to my PC and also has full wifi strength. Tried a different wireless adapter - I dug out an old PCI wireless card - it does the exact same thing. Compared all wireless settings to my laptop. I can ping google.com and it replies (sometimes with packet loss) When I reboot the PC it will connect for a minute or two (random time) and then just stops again. I tried Firefox, IE etc. no joy I have updated all latest versions (Netgear WG111v2) and drivers Checked Event Log - nothing unusual Ping the router (and even connect as admin for the few minutes when the internet does work) Changed the MTU down to 1200 using DrTCP Checked Device Manager for conflicts - none. I ping the router from the PC (192.168.0.10 - 192.168.0.1) and it replies with 4 packets. BUT, on my router admin page (which I access via http on my laptop wirelessly) - if I ping 192.168.0.10 all packets timeout (pinging my laptop 192.168.0.12 works fine) My router admin page shows the leased IP address for 192.168.0.10 (ie it is definitely talking to the router initially) Now I am out of ideas - please help. I think it is an OS/Software issue as I have tried 2 different wireless adapaters (PCI and USB) with the same result but all other wireless devices work fine around mine). It's not the firewall. It is getting assigned an IP address correctly (my PC gets 192.168.0.10, my laptop is .12) It is assigned by DHCP. As soon as I plug in the ethernet cable it all works fine. Repairing the adapter sometimes helps but it will always stop working after a random time. The wireless adapter always shows as connected with Excellent signal but the internet does not work. I am running Windows XP SP3 and have tried a Netgear WG111v2 USB adapter. Thanks in advance! UPDATE: The internet seems to be working, it is just either sending packets too small or slow to work (some small pages load bits of them very slowly but then hang). • How to install DBD::mysql on OS X Server 10.6?

  Trying to install DBD::mysql on OS X Server 10.6 (mac mini server). But I'm missing the mysql headers apparently. Since mysql is already part of OS X Server 10.6, I would like to NOT install anything else (no fink or darwin ports installs), just whatever's needed to get DBD::mysql installed and working. Do you know how I could do that? Do I have to install the headers somewhere? And if so, where? (again: I don't want to install another version of mysql on the box, want to use the version it came with). Is there a way to install DBD::mysql without compiling any C files? • Is there a way to avoid Wacom Control Panel to stop showing in certain cases ?

  This is the problem: Suddenly, you double click on desktop wacom tablet settings icon, and it wont show the dialog. It appears to be loaded as it's shown down in the windows taskbar. I suspect is caused by change of resolution or some setting, maybe suddenly it sets the origin of the panel dialog at some 3000 thosand pixels to the right or something. I have digged that wacom_tablet.dat file to see if I fix it changing some value there, but looks like a log, a history, more than a ini for settings... And anyway does not solve it. My solution is having always a very complete settings file done and backed up to restore (with wacom utility for this, which in previous driver versions did not exist) when this happens, but is counter productive: You change the settings even per each project(and software) needs. I have seen it happenning with Cintiq 12", intuos4 A6, Graphires, Intuos 1. Is just me, doing something weird every time? I doubt it, is normal use, I am amazed that seems no one else had this prob(or nobody asked), happens often with typical use. Maybe is because am setting a shortcut in the desktop? Weird as it works perfect till some random moment... (Have digged Wacom's forums and FAQs, then here, but nothing related to it... Neither in "related questions".) The thing happens in Win XP, 7, etc. Done so during years in my experience, and several times at work, which is worse.

• Why does the screen resolution of 1440x900 suddenly disappear from Intel GMA Control Panel?

  I'm using a Vostro 1200 laptop with the Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset powering its graphics and running Vista 32-bit SP2. I've been using the Vostro with a Dell SE198WFP LCD Monitor as the external display since day one for about two years without any problems. Recently, I plugged the Vostro into a couple of other monitors. The problem is, now the native resolution for my main monitor's (the SE198WFP) resolution of 1440x900 @ 60 Hz is no longer available. (See below) I've tried everything from uninstalling and reinstalling the Intel drivers as well as the monitor drivers to no avail. I've goggled this problem and it appears that this has happened to other people but all the answers involve people giving up in frustration or reinstalling; both terrible outcomes. Has anybody ever figured why this happens and have a good solution? UPDATE: This dude has a complicated solution, which I haven't tried yet. His explanations for the problem was After an exausting search for an answer to the matter of why my brand new 19? widescreen monitor’s native resolution (1440×900) was unavailible (sic) in the display properties, I finally stumbled upon an article a person posted on Intel’s forums that basically explained what shannanigans Intel had been up to with their GMA 950 line of onboard graphic solutions. Not very comforting.

I have added in the code as of right now an extra onclick="this.style.display='none'" in the .cs code but that is a ugly fix I was wondering if anyone would have a better idea of disabling the ThemeButton clientside?? pls any feedback if I need to give more examples or further explain the question thanks.
