• Building Interactive User Interfaces with Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX: Refreshing An UpdatePanel With Jav

  The ASP.NET AJAX UpdatePanel provides a quick and easy way to implement a snappier, AJAX-based user interface in an ASP.NET WebForm. In a nutshell, UpdatePanels allow page developers to refresh selected parts of the page (instead of refreshing the entire page). Typically, an UpdatePanel contains user interface elements that would normally trigger a full page postback - controls like Buttons or DropDownLists that have their AutoPostBack property set to True. Such controls, when placed inside an UpdatePanel, cause a partial page postback to occur. On a partial page postback only the contents of the UpdatePanel are refreshed, avoiding the "flash" of having the entire page reloaded. (For a more in-depth look at the UpdatePanel control, refer back to the Using the UpdatePanel installment in this article series.) Triggering a partial page postback refreshes the contents within an UpdatePanel, but what if you want to refresh an UpdatePanel's contents via JavaScript? Ideally, the UpdatePanel would have a client-side function named something like Refresh that could be called from script to perform a partial page postback and refresh the UpdatePanel. Unfortunately, no such function exists. Instead, you have to write script that triggers a partial page postback for the UpdatePanel you want to refresh. • Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 2)

  Last week's article, Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 1), was the first in a multi-part article series exploring how to add store locator-type functionality to your ASP.NET website using the free Google Maps API. Part 1 started with an examination of the database used to power the store locator, which contains a single table named Stores with columns capturing the store number, its address and its latitude and longitude coordinates. Next, we looked at using Google Maps API's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address, such as San Diego, CA or 92101 into its latitude and longitude coordinates. Knowing the coordinates of the address entered by the user, we then looked at writing a SQL query to return those stores within (roughly) 15 miles of the user-entered address. These nearby stores were then displayed in a grid, listing the store number, the distance from the address entered to each store, and the store's address. While a list of nearby stores and their distances certainly qualifies as a store locator, most store locators also include a map showing the area searched, with markers denoting the store locations.   Over the past couple of months I've been working on a couple of projects that have used the free Google Maps API to add interactive maps and geocoding capabilities to ASP.NET websites. In a nutshell, the Google Maps API allow you to display maps on your website, to add markers onto the map, and to compute the latitude and longitude of an address, among many other tasks. With some Google Maps API experience under my belt, I decided it would be fun to implement a store locator feature and share it here on 4Guys. A store locator lets a visitor enter an address or postal code and then shows the nearby stores. Typically, store locators display the nearby stores on both a map and in a grid, along with the distance between the entered address and each store within the area. To see a store locator in action, check out the Wells Fargo store locator. This article is the first in a multi-part series that walks through how to add a store locator feature to your ASP.NET application. In this inaugural article, we'll build the database table to hold the store information. Next, we'll explore how to use the Google Maps API's geocoding feature to allow for flexible address entry and how to translate an address into latitude and longitude pairs. • ASP.NET MVC 3 (C#) Software Architecture

  I am starting on a relatively large and ambitious ASP.NET MVC 3 project and just thinking about the best way to organize my code. The project is basically going to be a general management system that will be capable of supporting any type management system whether it be a blogging system, cms, reservation system, wikis, forums, project management system, etc…, each of them being just a separate 'module'. For those who don't want to read the long blog post the basic idea is that the core system itself is nothing more than a users system with an admin interface to manage the users system. Then you just add on module as you need them and the module I will be creating is a simple blog post to test it out before I move on to the big module which is a project management system. Now I am just trying to think of the best way to structure this so that it is easy for users to add in there own modules but easy for me to update to core system without worrying about the user modifying the core code. I think the ideal way would be to have a number of core projects that user is specifically told not to modify otherwise the system may become unstable and future updates would not work. When the user wants to add in there own modules, they would just add in a new project (or multiple projects). The thing is I am not sure that it is even possible to use multiple projects all with their own controllers, razor view template, css, javascript, etc... in one web application. Ideally each module would have some of it own razor view templates, css, javascript, image files and also need access to some of the core razor view templates, css, javascript, image files which would is in a separate project. It is possible to have 1 web application run off of controllers, razor view templates, css, javascript, image files that are store in multiple projects? Is there a better was to structure this to allow the user to easily add in module with having to modify the core code?

• Qt vs WPF/.NET

  My company is trying to make the decision between using Qt/C++ for our GUI framework or migrating to .NET and using WPF. We have up to this point been using MFC. It seems that .NET/WPF is technically the most advanced and feature-rich platform. I do, however, have several concerns. These include: Platform support Framework longevity (i.e. future-proofing) Performance and overhead For this application we are willing to sacrifice support for Windows 2000, Macs, and Linux. But, the issue is more related to Microsoft's commitment to the framework and their extant platforms. It seems like Microsoft has a bad habit of coming up with something new, hyping it for a few years, and then relegating it to the waste-bin essentially abandoning the developers who chose it. First it was MFC and VB6, then Windows Forms, and now there's WPF. Also with .NET, versions of Windows were progressively nicked off the support list. Looks like WPF could be here to stay for a while, but since its not open source its really in Microsoft's hands. I'm also concerned about the overhead and performance of WPF since some of our applications involve processing large amounts of information and doing real-time data capture. Qt seems like a really good option, but it doesn't have all the features of WPF/.NET couldn't use languages like C#. Basically, what does the community think about Microsoft's commitment to WPF compared with previous frameworks? Are the performance considerations significant enough to avoid using it for a realtime app? And, how significant are the benefits of WPF/.NET in terms of productivity and features compared to Qt?

  Hi Guys, I was having issues in log4net when i updated my solutions to .net 4.0 , and then i downloaded the source of it and built log4net and targeted it to .net 4.0 and used it in my projects. initially when i referred log4net that is targeted to run time 2.0 it complied and run the application but log did not work. now when i run my project with log4net targeted to .net 4.0 i get the error " The type initializer for 'Log4NetTest.TestLog' threw an exception." Any Idea how to solve this

• How to process a .proto file using protobuf-net

  I have stated using the protobuf-net lib to communication between some of the programs I'm maintaining. I have also been able to decode messages from C# to Ruby. My ruby ProtoBuf lib is using a .proto file to generate the ruby code. In the interest of having to make changes in as few places as possible I would like to have protobuf-net use the same .proto file. Looking though the protobuf-net folders there is a Dll named ProtoBufGenerator and the protobuf exe but I cant find any instructions on if I can make protobuf-net work this way. Is this possible?

  Has anyone found a way to make the ADO.NET Entity Framework work with OLE DB or ODBC data sources? Specifically, I need to work with an Access database that for various reasons can't be upsized to SQL. This MSDN page says: The .NET Framework includes ADO.NET providers for direct access to Microsoft SQL Server (including Entity Framework support), and for indirect access to other databases with ODBC and OLE DB drivers (see .NET Framework Data Providers). For direct access to other databases, many third-party providers are available as shown below. The reference to "indirect access to other databases" is tantalising but I confess that I am hopelessly confused by all the different names for data access technology.

Add one to your project. I have in the references already nServicebus.dll, nservicebus.Core.dll, and log4net.dll

• Using PSExec from within CruiseControl .NET

  Hi All, I'm trying to call a PSExec task from CC.NET and running into some difficulties. Here's the CC project <project name="Test"> <tasks> <exec> <executable>C:\Utilities\psexec.exe</executable> <buildArgs>-u [UNAME] -p [PWD] "C:\Utilities\Joel.bat"</buildArgs> </exec> </tasks> </project> Here's the source of Joel.bat CLS @ECHO OFF What happens is that the first time I force the project to build, it runs successfully. The PSExec task is kicked off and the Joel.bat file is executed. I get some information in the build log about exit codes, but the task is successful. Here's the build log output. PsExec v1.97 - Execute processes remotely Copyright (C) 2001-2009 Mark Russinovich Sysinternals - www.sysinternals.com C:\Utilities\Joel.bat exited with error code 0. The second time I force the build I get the dreaded "The Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142)" error message. I can't ever run the build more than once More so, if I try to shut down the cruise control .net service from within the services MSC, it can't. It's like there's a lock somewhere that is taken and not released. The only way I can kill the service is by killing the ccservices.exe process. I've tried the exact same thing using an nant task and gotten the exact same results. It works the first time, and fails the second and I can't shutdown the process. I'm not sure if this is an issue with CC.NET or with PSEXEC (or me of course). Anybody got any ideas? I'm posting to the CC.NET forums as well. I'm using the latest and greatest of PSExec and 1.4.4 of CC.NET. Thx, Joel

  Hi Everyone, I have a small question which should be very easy for the jquery experts out there. I can redirect to another page fine (as shown in the example) but I cannot cause the $(this).find("a").click(); to fire.   I have been getting the error "The required version of the .NET Framework is not installed on this computer." (Event Id 4096 in Event log) when trying to install a VSTO application from both a ClickOnce deployment and a local copy. This is interesting as the .NET framework is installed (on my 32bit Windows 7 PC) and the VSTO application was developed on the self same machine (and works in Visual Studio 2008). Does anybody has an idea why I could get this exception?   Hi, I installed the VS2010 and .NET 4.0, then I compiled an assembly and ran the gacutil using the exe available on %ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A\Bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools The output of the executable said the assembly was sucessfully installed on Global Assembly Cache. However, when I go to %WINDIR%\assembly folder I cannot find the assembly I installed using the .NET Framework 4.0 gacutil. I've seen some posts saying the .NET Framework 4.0 has a separated GAC, but what I haven't found was where it is located. May someone to help me to check where can I see the Global Assembly Cache of .NET Framework, as it used to work on previous version (%WINDIR%\assembly)?

But my consoleapp crashs when i call the cgi script. So i did a little debuging and write a text file after some actions i do in my .net program. The result was that my programm crash everytime i'd like to open a access mdb file. It told me that i need the Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC). But i cant belive this message because my .net consoleapp runs without errors if i start it from my own. So can anybody give me some advise how i can call my .net consol ab through a webscript. I'm happy for every advise So it don't have to be a solution using a cgi script. Regards, Nico

I have a project that now uses .NET 4.0 (target .NET Framework 4.0) in Visual Studio 2010. Is it possible to use the project compiled dlls in Visual Studio 2008? How? I don't want to use .NET4.0 directly in Visual Studio 2008, only the compiled dlls with target .NET Framework 4.0 (this is how my question is different that what has been asked so far). I know that I was able to use .NET3.5 in Visual Studio 2005. So why not .NET4.0 in Visual Studio 2008?

• Why is there no IronPerl (Perl for .Net)?

  I'm a bit disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any effort to make Perl a first-class citizen of the .Net world. I've read a few 'reasons' in the past but I don't see why they can't be overcome (different garbage collectors, hard-to-parse syntax, part of CPAN modules couldn't be ported, different communities, ...). Activestate has a Perl.Net product but it's a hack (in the good sense) around a standard interpreter and some syntactic sugar to interoperate with .Net assemblies. A few years ago they stopped they visual studio integration of Perl citing lack of interest. That was a while ago, before all the changes to .Net to make it more 'dynamic'. Am I the only one who yearns for IronPerl?

  I have an ASP page with the following repeater: <asp:Repeater runat="server" ID="RegionRepeater" DataSourceID="SqlDataSourceRegions" EnableViewState="true"> <ItemTemplate> <tr> <td valign="top"> <b><%#Eval("description")%></b> <asp:HiddenField runat="server" ID="RegionID" Value='<%#Eval("region_id")%>'/> </td> <td> <asp:FileUpload ID="FileUpload" runat="server" Width="368px" /> </td> </tr> </ItemTemplate> </asp:Repeater> (The repeater is inside a Wizard, inside a content pane). The code behind is connected to the protected void Wizard1_NextButtonClick(object sender, WizardNavigationEventArgs e) event. There are two items on the screen (two rows inside the table). However, when the code tries to read those items, the Items collection is empty! foreach(RepeaterItem region in RegionRepeater.Items) { // Never runs - the RegionRepeater.Items.Count = 0 FileUpload fileUpload = (FileUpload) region.FindControl("FileUpload"); String regionID = ((HiddenField)region.FindControl("RegionID")).Value; ... Why is the collection empty, when there are controls drawn on the screen? Thanks a lot for any help; this is starting to drive me nuts. (BTW: I tried adding/removing the EnableViewState="true" tag)

• How to get SpecFlow working with xUnit.net as the test runner

  I'm trying to use xUnit.net as the test runner for SpecFlow. The SpecFlow 1.2 binaries from the official download area don't contain an xUnit.net provider but the master branch on GitHub has one, so I build SpecFlow.Core.dll from that. I'm using xUnit.net 1.5. However, when I change the unitTestProvider name in the app.config in my spec project, I get a null reference custom tool error and the generated .feature.cs file is the single line: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Has anyone succeeded in getting SpecFlow to work with xUnit.net? If so, how?
