• Don't understand multiple parameter declarations in objective-c

  can someone clarify this for me: When there’s more than one argument, the arguments are declared within the method name after the colons. Arguments break the name apart in the declaration, just as in a message. For example: - (void)setWidth:(float)width height:(float)height; So in the above: method is for instance variables returns void parameter#1 is a float, named width. parameter#2 is a float,named height. But why is it hieght:(float)height; and not just: - (void)setWidth: (float)width (float)height;

  I have the following method to save an Object to a file: // Save an object out to the disk public static void SerializeObject<T>(this T toSerialize, String filename) { XmlSerializer xmlSerializer = new XmlSerializer(toSerialize.GetType()); TextWriter textWriter = new StreamWriter(filename); xmlSerializer.Serialize(textWriter, toSerialize); textWriter.Close(); } I confess I did not write it (I only converted it to a extension method that took a type parameter). Now I need it to give the xml back to me as a string (rather than save it to a file). I am looking into it, but I have not figured it out yet. I thought this might be really easy for someone familiar with these objects. If not I will figure it out eventually.

• How do you encode an apostrophe so that it's searchable in mysql?

  I don't think that was the most clear question, but an example should make it a little clearer. I have a table filled with movie names, some of which contain apostrophes. I have a search box which is used to find movies. If I perform searches via mov_title = '$search_keywords' it all works, but this method will not yield any results for partial searches, so I have to use this mov_title LIKE '%$search_keywords%' This method works fine for titles that are A-Za-z0-9, but if a title has an apostrophe, it's not able to find the movie, even if I do an exact match. Before the titles are stored in the DB, I put them through this: $search_keywords = htmlspecialchars(mysql_escape_string($_GET["search_keywords"])); So in the DB, there is a forward slash before every single apostrophe. The only way to match a movie title with an apostrophe is to physically put a forward slash in front of the apostrophe, in the search box. This seems so trivial, and I'm sure the solution is painfully obvious, but I'm just not seeing it.

• MVC - Sanitizing data, where?

  I'm using CakePHP but it's a question about the MVC pattern. I have in my form the input-text for the tags (separated by commas). To add the tags I've created a Tag model method that basically check if the tag exists and then add the new tag or just a new unit in the tag counter (the Tag model has these fields: id, name, slug, count). In the controller I explode the tags field and pass one tag at a time. The question is: where do I sanitize data? In the controller or in the model method? I think it should be in the controller because that's where I explode but in term of reusability I think I should sanitize data in the model. What do you think?

  In one of the page I have is where administrators are allowed, however, I use if the session isn't set, the header will redirect them to index.php and that method works. If I replace index.php with home which is for the htaccess which changes it to index.php but it gives an error in the browser This works: if(!isset($_SESSION['MEMBER'])){ header("Location: index.php"); } This does not work: if(!isset($_SESSION['MEMBER'])){ header("Location: home"); } htaccess: RewriteRule ^home$ index.php The error in Firefox: The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete. However, when I try to call the method wow(), it returns an error, which is fixed by changing wow() to: def wow(self) Why do I need to include self and if I don't, what does the method mean?2. Is it a good practice to create a reference to application context at the main Activity and use it anywhere such as database operations? • Does a Category applied to NSString also apply to NSCFString via the "toll-free bridge"?

  We're integrating a library into an iPhone app which appears to use the google toolbox for iPhone internally. The google toolbox adds a method gtm_stringBySanitizingAndEscapingForXML to NSString. The problem is, whenever we attempt to make a call to this library we get [NSCFString gtm_stringBySanitizingAndEscapingForXML]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x272478 So it appears the library is calling that method on a NSCFString, to which the category does not apply. So... is it the case that the category will not apply across the toll-free bridge to CoreFoundation classes? If that's the case then we at least know why it's blowing up. Figuring out how to fix it is a different matter.

• Unwanted automated creation of new instances of an activity class

  I have an activity (called Sender) with the most basic UI, only a button that sends a message when clicked. In the onClickListener I only call this method: private void sendSMS(String msg) { PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, new Intent(this, Sender.class), 0); PendingIntent pi = PendingIntent.getActivity(this, 0, myIntent, 0); SmsManager sms = SmsManager.getDefault(); sms.sendTextMessage("1477", null, msg, pi, null); } This works ok, the message is sent but every time a message is sent a new instance of Sender is started on top of the other. If I call sendSMS method three times, three new instances are started. I'm quite new to android so I need some help with this, I only want the same Sender to be on all the time

• Obtain the pathName dynamically for ASP.NET MVC

  Hello, I'm looking for a solution that allows me to get the parent page pathname from a partialView invoked. For example I have an Action baa and a controller boo so the javascript to obtain this will be window.location.pathname, and it returns /boo/baa. The thing is that I use a partial view, so when I try to retrieve the pathname via the URL helper, what I obtain is the PartialView one, and what I need is the pathname for the action that invokes it. I want to do this because I want to show certain things of the partial view depending on the pathname of the parent view that invokes it. Is there a way to do this with ASP.NET MVC? • jQuery access each matched element from '.find' by an index

  Using jQuery's .find() method to return a set of elements, I am trying to access items in the returned set by their order in that set. For example, a table with two rows and in each row a select box and two text input fields, accessed with the following: $('table#tbl').find('tr.row').each(function(i) { }); To get the first element I would have thought I could use $('table#tbl').find('tr.row').each(function(i) { alert( $(this).find(':input').get(1).val() ); }); And variations of the above, but apparently this doesn't work. Could anyone suggest the correct method to access item x of n elements returned?

  ok i have another question ! (god! i have so many questions) i have an application and a user must log-in before he/she can access pages. now once the user logs in i keep the user details in a session variable (say Session["CurrentUser"]). now if a user tries to jump to a page directly i will check if the Session["CurrentUser"] has a value or not...if not then the user will be directed to the login page... my problem is that i have done this or rather say written this "Checking Code" on almost all the pages. what i want is this code to stay on a particular location and i will just access that method all the time on all the pages...now where should i write this method ?? thank you.

• Securing input of private / protected methods?

  Hello, normally, all sane developers are trying to secure input of all public methods (casting to proper types, validating, sanitizing etc.) My question is: are you in your code validating also parameters passed to protected / private methods? In my opinion it is not necessary, if you securize properly parameters of public methods and return values from outside (other classes, db, user input etc...). But I am constantly facing frameworks and apps (ie. prestashop to name one) where validation is often repeated in method call, in method body and once again for securize returned value - which, I think, is creating performace overhead and is also a sign of bad design.

Now, the wicked bug: - when I run the startRecognition method in the beginning of the execution of the other application, this codes works very well. But when I run it some time after the beginning, this codes works but the handleRecognition method is never called. I see that the words are recognized because they appear on the Microsoft Speech Recognition app, but the handler method is never called. Do you know what's the problem with this code?   I've written program solving bounded producer & consumer problem. While constructing ArrayBlockingQueue I defined capacity 100. I'm using methods take and put inside threads. And I've noticed that sometimes I see put 102 times with any take's between them. Why does it happen? This method gets a type of an interface and if there's a class of interface name without leading I it creates it, otherwise an exception is raised. • Rails -- Cant set value for date_select in form

  I'm pulling data from an API where the date data comes in as "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " I would like that data to go into my form within the date_select as a value so I can view it correctly before I add it into my database. The view looks like <%= f.label :start_date %><br /> <%= f.date_select :start_date, :value => " #{@stdate[idx]} " %> The object is actually an array of dates since I'm doing this action several times do thats why the [idx] is there; serving as an index. <%= @stdate[idx] % ends up outputting "2008-02-11 00:00:00 " but the fields for the date_select helper only outputs the current date "2010" "June" "5" in those dropdown date selects fields... Do I need to set the values of the Year, Month, and Date Individually? I have Chronic and tried to parse the object before using it as a value for the date_select and that didnt work either. Any ideas?

• Why are items being placed below?

  This is really confusing and I have never had this occur. For my computer, it is fine. But for anyone else's computer I have tried, it screws up. So on my site, designatease.com , the second bar down, it places the fifth item down below the first four. I am not sure why it is doing this. I want them to span across the bar but the stop at about half way. Help me out SOF.   I have the following Model: Entities: Product (Contains basic data for products: price, etc) Attribute (Contains data for all possible optional attributes) ProductAttribute (Contains data for optional attributes of a product, eg. Color, Model, Size). ProductAttribute is essentially a many to many relationship with payload (ProductId, AttributeID, Value) And this piece of code: private static void ListAttributes(Product p) { p.ProductAttributes.Load(); foreach (var att in p.ProductAttributes) { att.Attribute.load(); Console.WriteLine("\tAttribute Name:{0} - Value {1}", att.Attribute.Name, att.AttributeValue); } } This piece of code will fire a query for each time the att.Attribute.Load() method is called in the foreach loop, only so i can get display the name of the attribute. I would like to fetch the Attribute.Name together with the query that fetches all attribute values, i.e. join ProductAttribute and Attribute. Is there any way to achieve this within my method?
