  • fetch only first row from oracle - is it faster?

    My main goal with this question is optimization and faster run time. After doing lot of processing in the Stored Proc I finally return a count like below: OPEN cv_1 FOR SELECT COUNT(*) num_of_members FROM HOUSEHOLD_MEMBER a, HOUSEHOLD b WHERE RTRIM(LTRIM(a.mbr_last_name)) LIKE v_MBR_LAST_NAME || '%' AND a.number = '01' AND a.code = v_CODE AND a.ssn_head = v_SSN_HEAD AND TO_CHAR( a.mbr_dob, 'MM/DD/YYYY') = v_DOB; But in my code that is calling the SP does not need the actual count. It just cares that count is greater than 1. Question: How can I change this to return just 1 or 0. 1 when count is 0 and 0 when count 1. Will it be faster to do this rather than returning the whole count?

  • How do I display a field's hidden characters in the result of a query in Oracle?

    I have two rows that have a varchar column that are different according to a Java .equals(). I can't easily change or debug the Java code that's running against this particular database but I do have access to do queries directly against the database using SQLDeveloper. The fields look the same to me (they are street addresses with two lines separated by some new line or carriage feed/new line combo). Is there a way to see all of the hidden characters as the result of a query?I'd like to avoid having to use the ascii() function with substr() on each of the rows to figure out which hidden character is different. I'd also accept some query that shows me which character is the first difference between the two fields.

    I am facing a peculiar problem where i need to update a particular value in database to say 'Hellò'. When i run normal update statement the values are updated fine. But when i put it i a .sql script file and then run the update statement the last character gets replaced by a junk value. Can some one enlighten me on this and how oracle processes script files?

  • Copying 6000 tables and data from sqlserver to oracle ==> fastest method?

    i need to copy the tables and data (about 5 yrs data, 6200 tables) stored in sqlserver, i am using datastage and odbc connection to connect and datstage automatically creates the table with data, but its taking 2-3 hours per table as tables are very large(0.5 gig, 300+columns and about 400k rows). How can i achieve this the fastes as at this rate i am able to only copy 5 tables per day but within 30 days i need move over these 6000 tables.

  • Import de-normalized relational data from Excel into SQL Server

    I need to import data from an Excel spreadsheet into SQL Server, but the data isn't in a relational/normalized format so the import wizard isn't going to cut it (as far as I know). The data is in this format: Category SubCategory Name Description Category#1 SubCategory#1 Product#1 Description#1 Category#1 SubCategory#1 Product#2 Description#2 Category#1 SubCategory#2 Product#3 Description#3 Category#1 SubCategory#2 Product#4 Description#4 Category#2 SubCategory#3 Product#5 Description#5 (apologies I'm lacking the inventiveness to come up with 'real' data at this time in the morning...) Each row contains a unique product, but the cateogry structure is duplicated. I want to import this data into three tables: Category SubCategory Product (I know SubCategory should really be contained within Category, DB was not my design) I need a way to import unique rows based on the Category and then SubCategory columns, and then when importing the other columns into Product, obtain a reference to the SubCategory based on name. Short of scripting this, is there any way to do it using the import wizard or some other tool?

    before answer me plz thinking about the futures of these kind of program and answer me plz. I wanna get some data from oracle server like: 1-get all the function,package,procedure and etc for showing them or drop them & etc... 2-compile my *.sql files,get the result if they have problem & etc... becuz I was beginner in oracle first of all I for solve the second problem I try to connect to sqlPlus by RUN sqlplus and trace the output(I mean,I change the output stream of shell and trace what happend and handle the assigned message to customer. NOW THIS PART SUCCEED. just a little bit I have problem with get all result because the output is asynchronous.any way... [in this case I log in to oracle Server by send argument to the sqlplus by make a process in c#] after that I try to get all function,package or procedure name,but I have problem in speed!so I try to use oracle.DataAccess.dll to connect the database. now I m so confusing about: which way is correct way to build a program that work like Oracle Developer! I do not have any experience for like these program how work. If Your answer is I must use the second way follow this part plz: I search a little bit the Golden,PLedit (Benthic software),I have little bit problem how I must create the connection string?because I thinking about how I can find the host name or port number that oracle work on them?? am I need read the TNSNames.Ora file?     I'm using the Generics Collection library C5 (server down :-( ) and I have an IntervalHeap(T) and I need to Delete or Replace a T that is not the Max or Min. How do I get an IPriorityQueueHandle from my T? The C5 library source code shows that IPriorityQueueHandle(T) has no methods or properties to implement and the compiler thinks my implementation of IPriorityQueueHandle(T) for my T is acceptable. I try to use a T like this: q.Replace(t, t); and the C5 library throws an InvalidCastException because it cannot convert my T to a (Handle).

    I have these 3 queries: SELECT title, year, MovieGenres(m.mid) genres, MovieDirectors(m.mid) directors, MovieWriters(m.mid) writers, synopsis, poster_url FROM movies m WHERE m.mid = 1; SELECT AVG(rating) FROM movie_ratings WHERE mid = 1; SELECT COUNT(rating) FROM movie_ratings WHERE mid = 1; And I need to join them into a single query. I was able to do it like this: SELECT title, year, MovieGenres(m.mid) genres, MovieDirectors(m.mid) directors, MovieWriters(m.mid) writers, synopsis, poster_url, AVG(rating) average, COUNT(rating) count FROM movies m INNER JOIN movie_ratings mr ON m.mid = mr.mid WHERE m.mid = 1 GROUP BY title, year, MovieGenres(m.mid), MovieDirectors(m.mid), MovieWriters(m.mid), synopsis, poster_url; But I don't really like that "huge" GROUP BY, is there a simpler way to do it?

  • Ubuntu on Oracle VirtualBox: Shared folders

    I looked at this question, but it didn't help. I'm running Windows 7 as a host with Ubuntu 10.10 as a guest with VBox 4.0. I want to have a shared directory between the two. I have installed Guest Additions. I went to the VBox control panel in Windows, added a Shared Folder (sharename Shared_Folder), and chose "Auto Mount". A directory named "sf_Shared_Folder" appeared in /media on Ubuntu, but when I put files in that directory from an OS, I can't see them on the other one. I then tried to create a directory without automounting (sharename collectivefiles), and to run the following command: foo@foo-VirtualBox:~$ sudo mount -t vboxsf collectivefiles FileShare /sbin/mount.vboxsf: mounting failed with the error: No such device What is causing this error? I rebooted both the VM and VBox itself, but I'm still observing this.

  • Fast (de)serialization on iPhone

    I'm developing a game/engine for iPhone OS. It's the first time I'm using Objective-C. I made my own binary format for geometry data and for textures I'm focusing on PVRTC. That should be the optimal approach as far as speed and space are concerned. I really want to keep loading time to a minimum and - if possible - be able to save very fast as well. So now I'm trying to make my "Entity" stuff persistent without sacrificing performance. First I wanted to use NSKeyedArchiver. From what I've heard, it's not very fast. Also, what I want to serialize is mostly structs made of floats with some ints and strings, so there isn't really a need for all that "object graph" overhead. NSArchiver would have been more appropriate, but they kicked that off the iphone for some reason. So now I'm thinking about making my own serialization scheme again. Am I wrong in thinking that NSKeyedArchiver is slow (I only read that, haven't tested it myself)? If so, what's the best way to encode/decode structs (with no pointers, mostly floats) without sacrificing speed?

Just a .cpp file for an empty constructor and deconstructor. I want to implement that method simply in the header file. That is much cleaner. How to do this?

    Say you've got the following query on 9i: SELECT /*+ USE_HASH(t2 t3) */ * FROM table1 t1 -- this has lots of rows LEFT JOIN table2 t2 ON t1.col1 = t2.col1 AND t1.col2 = t2.col2 LEFT JOIN table3 t3 ON t1.col1 = t3.col1 AND t1.col2 = t3.col2 Due to 9i not having RIGHT OUTER HASH JOIN, it needs to hash table1 for both joins. Does it re-hash table1 between joining t2 and t3 (even though it's using the same join columns), or does it keep the same hash information for both joins?
