  I have a local collection of recordId's (integers). I need to retrieve records that have every one of their child records' ids in that local collection. Here is my query: public List<int> OwnerIds { get; private set; } ... filteredPatches = from p in filteredPatches where OwnerIds.All(o => p.PatchesOwners.Select(x => x.OwnerId).Contains(o)) select p; I am getting this error: Local sequence cannot be used in Linq to SQL implementation of query operators except the Contains() operator. I get that .All() isn't supported by Linq to SQL, but is there a way to do what I am trying to do?

  The setup: 2-node Cassandra 1.2.6 cluster replicas=2 very large CQL3 table with no secondary index Rowkey is a UUID.randomUUID().toString() read consistency set to ONE Using DataStax java driver 1.0 The request: Attempting to do a table scan by "SELECT some-col from schema.table LIMIT nnn;" The fail: Once I go beyond a certain nnn LIMIT, I start to get NoHostAvailableExceptions from the driver. For example, when this happens, there are no indications that the nodes in the cluster ever had an issue with the request (there is nothing in the logs on either node that indicate any timeout or failure). Also, I enabled the trace on the driver, which gives you some nice autotrace (ala Oracle) info as long as the query succeeds. But in this case, the driver blows a NoHostAvailableException and no ExecutionInfo is available, so tracing has not provided any benefit in this case. I also find it interesting that this does not seem to be recorded as a timeout (my JMX consoles tell me no timeouts have occurred). So, I am left not understanding WHERE the failure is actually occurring. I am left with the idea that it is the driver that is having a problem, but I don't know how to debug it (and I would really like to). I have read several posts from folks that state that query'g for resultSets 10000 rows is probably not a good idea, and I am willing to accept this, but I would like to understand what is causing the exception and where the exception is happening. FWIW, I also tried bumping the timeout properties in the cassandra.yaml, but this made no difference whatsoever. I welcome any suggestions, anecdotes, insults, or monetary contributions for my registration in the house of moron-developers. Regards!!

• Lubuntu 12.04 PPC slow startup and shutdown

  I've installed Lubuntu 12.04 on a Powerbook G4 (PowerPC 1GHz, 1 gb ram, Geforce MX 440). Everything works perfectly except the startup and shutdown. To startup my system I have to wait about 3 minutes (and similar time to shutdown) Giving a look @ /var/log/dmesg I noticed the following [drm] nouveau 0000:00:10.0: Detected an NV10 generation card (0x017900a5) checking generic (b8004000 151800) vs hw (b8000000 80000000) fb: conflicting fb hw usage nouveaufb vs 0Ffb NVDA,Displ - removing generic driver The only issue concerns Nouveau ... inside my /var/log/kern.log says what follows BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 22s! I've booted passing the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter and the system boot in 15 seconds but with 4 bit graphics -- Any idea how to fix? Thanks in advance for any help

• Debugging dynamic sql + dynamic tables in MS SQL Server 2008.

  Hi, I have a messy stored procedure which uses dynamic sql. I can debug it in runtime by adding print @sql; where @sql; is the string containing the dynamic SQL, right before I call execute (@sql);. Now, the multi-page stored procedure also creates dynamic tables and uses them in a query. I want to print those tables to the console right before I do an execute, so that I know exactly what the query is trying to do. However, the SQL Server 08 does not like that. When I try: print #temp_table; and try to compile the S.P. I get this error: The name "#temp_table" is not permitted in this context. Valid expressions are constants, constant expressions, and (in some contexts) variables. Column names are not permitted. Please help.

• Minecraft flickers sometimes and colors get buggy on an Intel HD Graphics 3000

  I really like Ubuntu, but I always had to switch back to Windows just because I couldn't get my Intel HD Graphics 3000 to work. So, 11.10 came out and I'm trying to get things work in this update, so I can finally stay with Ubuntu and use it. Anyways, things seem to be more stable here, but they're still a bit fishy. I'm doing tests with Minecraft. Currently, there's only 1 minor bug. The game flickers from time to time and the colors get buggy or something I read that maybe I should update to kernel 3.1? Maybe 32-bit Ubuntu is better? It was impossible to play Minecraft in 11.04, but 11.10 is so much more stable.

• trouble with utf-8 chars & apache2 rewrite rules

  I see the post http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2565864/validating-utf-8-in-htaccess-rewrite-rule and I think that is great, but a more fundamental problem I am having first: I needed to expand to handle utf-8 chars for query string parameters, names of directories, files, and used in displays to users etc. I configured my Apache with DefaultCharset utf-8 and also my php if that matters. My original rewrite rule filtered everything except regular A-Za-z and underscore and hyphen. and it worked. Anything else would give you a 404 (which is what I want!) Now, however it seems that everything matches, including stuff I don't want, however, although it seems to match it doesn't go in the query string unless it is a regular A-Za-z_- character string. I find this confusing, because the rule says put whatever you matched into the query string: Here is the original rule: RewriteRule ^/puzzle/([A-Za-z_-]+)$ /puzzle.php?g=$1 [NC] and here is the revised rule: RewriteRule ^/puzzle/(\w+)$ /puzzle.php?g=$1 [NC] I made the change because somewhere I read that \w matches ALL the alpha chars where as A-Zetc. only matches the ones without accents and stuff. It doesn't seem to matter which of those rules I use: Here is what happens: In the application I have this: echo $_GET['g']; If I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/USA it echoes out "USA" and works fine. If I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/México it echoes nothing for that and warns me that index g is not defined and of course doesn't get resources for Mexico. if I feed it a url like http://mydomain.com/puzzle/fuzzle/buzzle/j.qle it does the same thing. This last case should be a 404! And it does this no matter which of the above rules I use. I configured a rewrite log RewriteLogLevel 5 RewriteLog /opt/local/apache2/logs/puzzles.httpd.rewrite but it is empty. Here is from the regular access log (it gives a status of 200) [26/May/2010:11:21:42 -0700] "GET /puzzle/M%C3%A9xico HTTP/1.1" 200 342 [26/May/2010:11:21:54 -0700] "GET /puzzle/M/l.foo HTTP/1.1" 200 342 What can I do to get these $%#$@(*#@!!! characters but not slash, dot or other non-alpha into my program, and once there, will it decode them correctly??? Would posix char classes work any better? Is there anything else I need to configure?

• IE8 AJAX GET setRequestHeaders not working unless params provided in URL

In IE8 however, all of my AJAX test requests work EXCEPT for ones where I'm performing GETs without any query string params (such as the one above). POSTs work without question, and GET requests only work whenever I include query strings in the URL, like this: xhr.open( 'GET', '/ajax/?foo=bar' ) I'm also 110% positive that my server code is handling these requests appropriately, so, this stumps me completely. Does anyone have any clue as to what might be causing this?

• Getting results in a result set from dynamic SQL in Oracle

  This question is similar to a couple others I have found on StackOverflow, but the differences are signficant enough to me to warrant a new question, so here it is: I want to obtain a result set from dynamic SQL in Oracle and then display it as a result set in a SqlDeveloper-like tool, just as if I had executed the dynamic SQL statement directly. This is straightforward in SQL Server, so to be concrete, here is an example from SQL Server that returns a result set in SQL Server Management Studio or Query Explorer: EXEC sp_executesql N'select * from countries' Or more properly: DECLARE @stmt nvarchar(100) SET @stmt = N'select * from countries' EXEC sp_executesql @stmt The question "How to return a resultset / cursor from a Oracle PL/SQL anonymous block that executes Dynamic SQL?" addresses the first half of the problem--executing dynamic SQL into a cursor. The question "How to make Oracle procedure return result sets" provides a similar answer. Web search has revealed many variations of the same theme, all addressing just the first half of my question. I found this post explaining how to do it in SqlDeveloper, but that uses a bit of functionality of SqlDeveloper. I am actually using a custom query tool so I need the solution to be self-contained in the SQL code. This custom query tool similarly does not have the capability to show output of print (dbms_output.put_line) statements; it only displays result sets. Here is yet one more possible avenue using 'execute immediate...bulk collect', but this example again renders the results with a loop of dbms_output.put_line statements. This link attempts to address the topic but the question never quite got answered there either. Assuming this is possible, I will add one more condition: I would like to do this without having to define a function or procedure (due to limited DB permissions). That is, I would like to execute a self-contained PL/SQL block containing dynamic SQL and return a result set in SqlDeveloper or a similar tool. So to summarize: I want to execute an arbitrary SQL statement (hence dynamic SQL). The platform is Oracle. The solution must be a PL/SQL block with no procedures or functions. The output must be generated as a canonical result set; no print statements. The output must render as a result set in SqlDeveloper without using any SqlDeveloper special functionality. Any suggestions?

• Are 'edited by' inline comments the norm in shops which use revision control?

  The senior dev in our shop insists that whenever code is modified, the programmer responsible should add an inline comment stating what he did. These comments usually look like // YYYY-MM-DD <User ID> Added this IF block per bug 1234. We use TFS for revision control, and it seems to me that comments of this sort are much more appropriate as check-in notes rather than inline noise. TFS even allows you to associate a check-in with one or more bugs. Some of our older, often-modified class files look like they have a comment-to-LOC ratio approaching 1:1. To my eyes, these comments make the code harder to read and add zero value. Is this a standard (or at least common) practice in other shops?

Added code to display a warning and paint a column red if the column name in the Export Data dialog is not set, display a warning if the table name is not set, and stack warnings but not display them if a column is Excluded, warnings are displayed normally for columns if they are not Excluded anymore.  Added code to prevent the Append and Export of Data if more than 1 selection is made (selecting more than 1 area holding the Ctrl key while selecting Excel cells). Fixed problem that prevented MySQL for Excel from loading when Display settings in Windows 7 is set to Adjust to Best Performance (Oracle bug 14521405 - UNHANDLED EXCEPTION IS THROWN WHEN LOADING MYSQL FOR EXCEL). Fixed code that renames the auto-generated Primary Key column when the Table name changes since it was not detecting if a column with the same name already existed in the table. The column duplication was not actually happening, it looked that way because the automatically generated PK column was not detecting a column had that same name. Fixed code in Export Data dialog to always set an empty string instead of null to the MySQLDataColumn properties that stores MySQL data types (MySQLDataType, RowsFrom1stDataType and RowsFrom2ndDataType). Added code to display a warning and color red a column which Data Type has not been set by the user or has been manually cleared. Added code to output to the application log exception messages consistently in all places where exceptions are catched. • C# WMI Eventwatcher code stopped working on Windows 7 with security exception

  This is code that worked fine on Windows XP for years. User is not local administrator. On XP this works fine without being admin. On this link MS states that 'Windows 7: Low-integrity users have read-only permissions for local WMI operations.'. I guess this is the problem. But I can't find any clue on how to change this.

• Web standards or risk avoidance?

  My company is building an App Engine application. The app encounters a bug (possibly due to an issue with App Engine itself, as per our research) on IE9, but it cannot be reliably reproduced and is experienced by a small percentage of users. The workaround is to force IE9 to use IE8 mode. As a lazy front end developer (who doesn't like CSS hacks, shims and polyfills) I think it's OK to at least try going back to IE9 mode and see what happens, while we're still in private beta. The senior engineer (being more pragmatic) would rather that we continue forcing IE9 users to use the older IE8 mode. Who is right?

• Doctrine lazy loading classes takes 100 ms?!

  I'm lazy loading my Doctrine classes in my website. Benchmarking has showed that Doctrine::loadModels('models') takes over 100 ms to complete! I have 118 tables in total, but still... setting attribute to conservative loading: Doctrine_Manager::getInstance()->setAttribute(Doctrine::ATTR_MODEL_LOADING, Doctrine::MODEL_LOADING_CONSERVATIVE); running the benchmark part: $CI->benchmark->mark('Doctrineload_start'); Doctrine::loadModels(APPPATH.'models'); $CI->benchmark->mark('Doctrineload_end'); And the result: Doctrineload 0.1085 (seconds) Is this 'normal'?   Hello, i've got a SQL query which returns multiple rows, and i have : $data = array( "nom" => $row['nom'] , "prix" => $row['rapport'], "average" => "$moyenne_ge" ); which is perfect, but only if my query returns one row. i tried that : $data = array(); $data[$row['nom']]["nom"] = $row['nom'] ; ... $data[$row['nom']]['average'] = "$moyenne_ge"; in order to have : $data[brand1][nom] = brand1 $data[brand1][average] = 150$ $data[brand2][nom] = brand2 $data[brand2][average] = 20$ ... but when i do : json_encode($data) i only have the latest JSON object instead of all JSON object from my request as if my array has only one brand instead of 10. • Fonts look horrible in any java application

  All fonts in java applications look horrible. I have seen a few questions about this previously, but they are quite old now(11.04 was the most recent, but that didn't seem to be the same problem). For some reason java applications do not use the system font (Ubuntu 11), but rather some elongated font that doesn't seem to have any anti-aliasing. So what I'm asking is if this is an open bug(couldn't find any on launchpad), something the developers have done wrong, or if there is a way to configure the fonts used in java application. Perhaps this is just a shortcoming of openjdk and I should install the Sun version instead? Attached an image showing jitsi, but the problem is also present in minecraft, my internet-bank and anything else involving java. I'm on 12.04, but since I couldn't find anything on launchpad I'm assuming that isn't relevant. Edit: actually managed to forget the picture... Thanks!

• How should I log time spent on multiple tasks?

  In Joel's blog on evidence based scheduling he suggests making estimates based on the smallest unit of work and logging extra work back to the original task. The problem I'm now experiencing is that I'll have create object A with subtask method A which creates object B and test all of the above. I create tasks for each of these that seems to be resulting in ok-ish estimates (need practice), but when I go to log work I find that I worked on 4 tasks at once because I tweak method A and find a bug in the test and refactor object B all while coding it. How should I go about logging this work? should I say I spent, for example, 2 hours on each of the 4 tasks I worked on in the 8 hour day?

What SQL query would you use to SELECT all items in the table along with their depth where the depth of an item is the sum of all parents and grand parents of that item. If the following is the content of the table: item_id item_parent ----------- ----------- 1 0 2 0 3 2 4 2 5 3 ... the query should retrieve the following set of objects: {"item_id":1,"depth":0} {"item_id":2,"depth":0} {"item_id":3,"depth":1} {"item_id":4,"depth":1} {"item_id":5,"depth":2} P.S. • Web Services: more frequent "small" calls, or less frequent "big" calls

  In general, is it better to have a web application make lots of calls to a web service getting smaller chunks of data back, or to have the web app make fewer calls and get larger chunks of data? In particular, I'm building a Silverlight app that needs to get large amounts of data back from the server in response to a query created by a user. Each query could return anywhere from a few hundred records to a few thousand. Each record has around thirty fields of mostly decimal-type data. I've run into the situation before where the payload size of the response exceeded the maximum allowed by the service. I'm wondering whether it's better (more efficient for the server/client/web service) to cut this payload vertically--getting all values for a single field with each call--or horizontally--getting batches of complete records with each call. Or does it matter?

• Flex+JPA/Hibernate+BlazeDS+MySQL how to debug this monster?!

  Ok so I'm making a "simple" web app using the technologies from the topic, recently I found http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/articles/flex_hibernate.html so I'm following it and I try to apply it to my app, the only difference being I'm working on a Mac and I'm using MAMP for the database (so no command line for me). The thing is I'm having some trouble with retrieving/connecting to the database. I have the remoting-config.xml, persistance.xml, a News.java class (my Entity), a NewsService.java class, a News.as class - all just like in the tutorial. I have of course this line in one of my .mxmls: <mx:RemoteObject id="loaderService" destination="newsService" result="handleLoadResult(event)" fault="handleFault(event)" showBusyCursor="true" /> And my remoting-config.xml looks like this (well part of it): <destination id="newsService"> <properties><source>com.gamelist.news.NewsService</source></properties> </destination> NewsService has a method: public List<News> getLatestNews() { EntityManagerFactory emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory(PERSISTENCE_UNIT); EntityManager em = emf.createEntityManager(); Query findLatestQuery = em.createNamedQuery("news.findLatest"); List<News> news = findLatestQuery.getResultList(); return news; } And the named query is in the News class: @Entity @Table(name="GLT_NEWS") @NamedQueries({ @NamedQuery(name="news.findLatest", query="from GLT_NEWS order by new_date_added limit 5 ") }) The handledLoadResult looks like this: private function handleLoadResult(ev:ResultEvent):void { newsList = ev.result as ArrayCollection; newsRecords = newsList.length; } Where: [Bindable] private var newsList:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection(); But when I try to trigger: loaderService.getLatestNews(); nothing happens, newsList is empty. Few things I need to point out: 1) as I said I didn't install mysql manually, but I'm using MAMP (yes, the server's running), could this cause some trouble? 2) I already have a "gladm" database and I have a "GLT_NEWS" table with all the fields, is this bad? Basically the question is how am I suppose to debug this thing so I can find the mistake I'm making? • PS using Get-WinEvent with FilterXPath and datetime variables?

  I'm grabbing a handful of events from an event log in chronological order don't want to pipe to Where want to use get-winevent After I get the Event1, I need to get the 1st instance of another event that occurs some unknown amount of time after Event1. then grab Event3 that occurs sometime after Event2 etc. Basically starting with: $filterXML = @' <QueryList> <Query Id="0" Path="System"> <Select Path="System">*[System[Provider[@Name='Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-General'] and (Level=4 or Level=0) and (EventID=12)]]</Select> </Query> </QueryList> '@ $event1=(Get-WinEvent -ComputerName $PCname -MaxEvents 1 -FilterXml $filterXML).timecreated Give me the datetime of Event1. Then I want to do something like: Get-WinEvent -LogName "System" -MaxEvents 1 -FilterXPath "*[EventData[Data = 'Windows Management Instrumentation' and TimeCreated -gt $event1]]" Obviously the timecreated part bolded there doesn't work but I hope you get what I'm trying to do. any help?
