• Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

  I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

• Folder cannot be deleted

  I am using Windows XP Home Edition. When I try to delete a folder I have named cygwin. When I try to delete it or any file or folder within it, there is a long pause, and then an error pops up, saying: Cannot delete Cygwin: Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or read-write protected and that the file is not currently in use. I have tried deleting the folder and the files it contains with FileAssassin, and unlocking it with LockHunter. Neither report any errors unless I try to have them delete the file or folder, then I get an error message saying Access Denied. I have rebooted into Safe Mode to change the ownership, but I get Access Denied when I click OK or Apply. How can I delete this folder?

• Internet Explorer 9 send page by email grayed out

  Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit has the items Send Page by email and Send link by email grayed out. The default email client is Windows Live Mail 2011. I have used the "Set Default" dialogs to do that. Everything else recognizes Windows Live Mail 2011 as the default, including Firefox 4. I have duplicated this problem on two computers here. I have changed the default email program to Mozilla Thunderbird on one of the computers, and IE9 won't let me Send Page by email or Send link by email there, either. Has anyone gotten this to work? Firefox is my default browser, but sometimes I have to use IE9.

• How To Export/Import a Website in IIS 7.x

  IIS 6 had a great feature called ‘Save Configuration to a File’ which would allow you to easily export a website’s configuration, to be later used to import either on the same server or another box.  This came in handy anytime you wanted to duplicate a site in order to do some testing without impacting the existing application.  So naturally, Microsoft decided to do away with this feature in IIS 7. The process to export/import a site is still fairly simple, though not as obvious as it was in previous versions.  Here are the steps: 1. Open a command prompt and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv and run the following command: appcmd list site /name:<sitename> /config /xml > C:\output.xml So if you were wanting to export a website named EAC, you would run the following: If you’ll be setting up another copy of the site on the same server, you’ll now need to edit the output.xml file before importing it.  This is necessary in order to avoid conflicts such as bindings, Site ID, etc.  To do this, edit the XML and change the values.  Go ahead and make a copy of the home directory, and rename it to whatever folder name you specified in the output – /EAC2 in this example.  If you decide to change the app pool, make sure you go ahead and create the new app pool as well. Once these edits have been made, we are now ready to import the site.  To do that run: appcmd add sites /in < c:\output.xml So for our example it would look like this: That’s it.  You should now see your site listed when opening up Inet Manager.  If for some reason the site fails to start, that’s probably because you forgot to create the new app pool or there is a problem with one of the other parameters you changed.  Look at the System log to identify any issues like this.

• Multiple public keys for one user

  This question is similar to SSH public key authentication - can one public key be used for multiple users? but it's the other way around. I'm experimenting on using ssh so any ssh server would work for your answers. Can I have multiple public keys link to the same user? What are the benefits of doing so? Also, can different home directories be set for different keys used (all of which link to the same user)? Please let me know if I'm unclear. Thanks.

• View the Time & Date in Chrome When Hiding Your Taskbar

  Do you prefer keeping your Taskbar hidden but still need to keep watch on what time it is? Now you can keep track of the time without the Taskbar using the Date Today extension for Google Chrome. A Look at Date Today with Different Themes This extension does one thing and does it well…it provides you with an “active icon” clock that will let you view the time and date in two fashions. The first is by hovering your mouse over the “Toolbar Clock Button”… And the second is by clicking on the “Toolbar Clock Button” to view an enlarged version. Here you can see the extension in use with five different themes to get an idea of how it might look with the theme that you are currently using. It does stand out very nicely with brighter or darker colored themes. Conclusion While this extension is obviously not for everyone it will make a nice (and useful) addition to Chrome for those who prefer keeping their Taskbar hidden. • What does SVN do better than git?

  No question that the majority of debates over programmer tools distill to either personal choice (by the user) or design emphasis, i.e., optimizing design according to particular uses cases (by the tool builder). Text Editors are probably the most prominent example--a coder who works on a Windows at work and codes in Haskell on the Mac at home, values cross-platform and compiler integration and so chooses Emacs over Textmate, etc. It's less common that a newly introduced technology is genuinely, demonstrably superior to the extant options. I wonder if this is in fact the case with version-control systems, in particular, centralized VCS (CVS, SVN) versus distributed VCS (git, hg)? I used SVN for about five years, and SVN is currently used where I work. A little less than three years ago, I switched to git (and gitHub) for all of my personal projects. I can think of a number of advantages of git over subversion (and which for the most part abstract to advantages of distributed over centralized VCS), but I cannot think of one contra example--some task (that's relevant and arises in a programmers usual workflow) that subversion does better than git. The only conclusion I have drawn from this is that I don't have any data--not that git is better, etc. My guess is that such counter-examples exist, hence this question.

• How to specify or add directory to Python.h search path during setup.py build/install

  I'm running Linux, and have downloaded a python module I must install without access to any but my particular /home/user directory (I have no root privileges nor the option to pursue them). This of course requires the Python source. This I've downloaded and have laying around in said user directory. While asking the admin to copy the proper files into /usr/include/python2.7 is the easiest way to go about this, I am hoping for a more general and portable solution to this kind of problem. Changing only data in the module source (MANIFEST.in, README.txt, setup.py, etc.), how might I add an arbitrary directory to the search path for Python.h and friends? (Without a solution, "python setup.py build" will continue returning with the "Python.h: No such file or directory" error) Thank you very much. • Host forwarding fails, server is up, domain name tests ambiguous

  I have a domain name registered with http://www.registryrocket.com/ The "main" site, which is called rudolfcode.net, is registered under godaddy, and forwards to a heroku site (rudolfcode.herokuapp.com). I have found that the main site, rudolfcode.net works, but the hostgator forwarding has stopped working (firefox simply fails when you point to http://www.rudolflabs.com, which is the domain name registered by hostgator). How can I debug this issue ? Finally, I have tried to run some DNS tests, and here are the results : Im not sure what the failures mean .... But Im pretty sure that "Conecting to WWW Home Page" failed is a pretty bad sign ! Thanks.

  Right now I have an excel spreadsheet. In Cells A1 and down I have cities listed. In Cells B1 and down I have some generic information with the word CITY in it. What I want to know if there is a formula to replace the word CITY that is in the contents of Cell B1 with the contents in Cell A1. For instance... Cell A1 has "Daytona Beach, FL" Cell B1 has "Compare mortgage & refinance rates from different mortgage lenders and brokers in CITY. Find the home refinance rate you were looking for in CITY." I need a formula that replaces "CITY" in B1 with "Dayton Beach, FL" in A1. Is this possible? Thank you for your help!

• Iptables remote port forwarding and dynamic remote ip

  Hello, I want to forward a port from my remote vps to my domestic server and I am quite a newbie with iptables. The problem is that I am using a dynamic dns service to reach my home server from the internet so I don't have a fixed ip and iptables doesn't like urls. The rules I am willing to use are these: -t nat -A PREROUTING -p tcp -i eth0 -d xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx --dport 8888 -j DNAT --to myhome.tld:80 -A FORWARD -p tcp -i eth0 -d myhome.tld --dport 80 -j ACCEPT Of course I recevie a Error BAD IP ADDRESS because of myhome.tld. • Lustre - is this bad form?

  Im going to be consolidating several 'server rooms' into a single installation soon. Part of this effort will be finding a home for 5Tb (and growing) of files / logs. To this end Im looking at Lustre and appreciating its ability to scale. The big vendors want to sell me a $20K SAN to manage this but Im wondering about buying several iSCSI units (like this http://www.asacomputers.com/3U-iSCSI-Solution.html) and using VMs for the OSS machines. This would let me fail-over to cover problems and not require a dedicated system for each OSS. Given articles like this (http://h30565.www3.hp.com/t5/Feature-Articles/RAID-Is-Dead-Long-Live-RAID/ba-p/1422) that talk about how RAID is not keeping up with drive density Im leaning towards more disks with lower capacity each. Again - some akin to the iSCSI array above. Tell me why this is a terrible idea. Do I really need to invest in a PE710 for each OSS/OST?

  I have a set of machines as follows My home laptop running Win7 Ultimate with internet connection. A vmware workstation vm running Windows Server 2003 Standard edition server in my laptop w/o internet connectivity Some of my peers' machines connected to internet I want to create a VPN with these machines, provided the VM will not have any direct internet connection and my peers should able to connect to the SVN server application running on this Win2003 server VM. Can anybody please suggest me how to setup this network, what software I need to install in both physical machine and vm, what kind of network connectivity should be there between vmware guest and host machine? EDIT: I deliberately don't want to connect the VM with internet. The host will work more of a gateway of the VPN connection for the VM.

• Suggestion for setting web application parameters

  I'm creating a web application on GWT. I'm using MVP pattern with activities and places. I have a xml config file containing some parameters to be used by the application. Content of this xml file is sent to the client using HttpRequest; I'm using a singleton class to hold the information from the xml file. Right now, the application is getting the data when the user starts the application in the home page, that is working well. Now, since I'm using activities and places, a user can bookmark a page and starts the application in any other page (Place). And here comes the problem: Since I'm using some of the information from the xml file to set some ui widgets, I have to check if the xml config file was read and the application already has the parameters (I do this by checking the singleton class). But the xml file is read by using an HttpRequest, so I got errors 'cause the application needs some parameters to initialize some ui widgets, but these parameters aren't ready on time. I was thinking on using an synchronous request to fix the problem, but it seems complicated and not recommendable to do that. So, I'd like to hear some other suggestions. Thanks.

• Dual Touchscreens in Different Rooms

  I'm planning on having one dual-core system running two touchscreens, each in its own room in the house. I'd like to be able to use the internet on one, while someone else uses the other to record music - each of us interacting with the screen as we would separate computers. I was also thinking that running each screen, or certain programs, on its own core might make this work more smoothly. Will this setup work in Windows 7 Home on a mini-tower or do I need to invest in a server to get this sort of workstation/terminal setup to work?

• User account automatically filling up with dead.letter file

  I have one user account on a server with about 400 accounts that is filling up automatically. The dead.letter file in the users home directory automatically grows until the account is full (about 10 - 40 Mb per day). The user is using Microsoft Outlook to send and receive mail. What can be causing this and how can I avoid it from happening? Right now I have an emergency cron-job to delete the file but I would like "real" solution. Edit: The server version is Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 4 (Nahant Update 4) Edit 2: It seems mainly spam and I see different mailer headings (from php to Outlook Express) and a frequent appearing header is [email protected] Update: I have asked the hosting provider where I use that dedicated server to look into the problem as well, as it's their Control Panel that could be a cause of the problem.

• Migrating My GWB Blog Over To WordPress

  Geeks With Blogs has been good to me, but there are too many tempting things about Word Press for me to stay with GWB.  Particularly their statistics features, and also I like that I can apply specific tags to my posts to make them easier to find in Google (and I never was able to get categories working on GWB). The one thing I don’t like about WordPress is I can’t seem to find a theme that stretches the Content area to take up the rest of the space on wide resolutions…..hopefully I’ll be able to overcome that obstacle soon though. For those who are curious as to how I actually moved all of my posts across, I ended up just using Live Writer to open my GWB posts, and then just changed it to publish to my WordPress blog.  This was fairly painless, but with my 27 posts it took probably about 2 hours of manual effort to do.  Most of the time WordPress was automatically able to copy the images over, but sometimes I had to save the pics from my GWB posts and then re-add them in Live Writer to my WordPress post.  I found another developers automated solution (in alpha mode), but opted to do it manually since I wanted to manually specify Categories and Tags on each post anyways.  The one thing I still have left to do is move the worthwhile comments across from the GWB posts to the new WordPress posts. The largest pain point was that with GWB I was using the Code Snippet Plugin for Live Writer for my source code snippets, and when they got transferred over to WordPress they looked horrible.  So I ended up finding a new Live Writer plugin called SyntaxHighlighter that looks even nicer on my posts If anybody knows of a nice WordPress theme that stretches the content area to fit the width of the screen, please let me know.  All of the themes I’ve found seem to have a max width set on them, so I end up with much wasted space on the left and right sides.  Since I post lots of code snippets, the more horizontal space the better! • Uninstall nginx on Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS remote machine

  I was given a server to setup, problem is this server was no reset, and the provider is quite slow on resetting it, so I have to completely uninstall some stuff it has, one of which is nginx. I had a few problems when doing setup on my local machine for nginx due to multiple installations of it, so I want to avoid the same mistake now. Problem is, I got no idea how nginx was installed here, and I need to remove it. When I access the server thro SSH i only have this folder $HOME/backups/nginx any idea how to uninstall this? Whenever I google it only come up with apt-get uninstall and so forth. Thank you

• Restoring backup with Deja Dup from external HD

  So, here's the problem that I have with restoring. First, I backed up like everything. So I had place on the external HD for only one copy. I had to reinstall everything, but I didn't worry because I had a backup. But now, restoring doesn't work and it starts to be annoying. So, I right click "Restore missing files...". Then I have the popup window from Deja Dup asking where is the backup. So, I select the external HD and either put nothing in "folder" or just put ".". Thinking that it should be the base to look for backups. In both cases, after a while scanning, I get: The Volume "Filesystem root" has only 139.7mb disk space remaining. But my partition "/home" has 799.6Gb free. Also, I just want to restore some files, I don't need all of them. On my external HD, there's a file called: duplicity-full.20120514T220834Z.manifest. A text file. In it, I can see that everything is partitions in files of 52mb. So, small files are in one archive while very large files are split in multiple one. But I can see the exact list of file that I have. So, I'm guessing that my backup is intact. What am I doing wrong ? Is possible that it failes, even to list all the files, because I don't have enough space left on my ExtHD ? Why can't duplicity used another location to do that ?

• Rsync : execute permission required

  I'm using rsync between two servers to transfer files. The problem is some files are not transferred. I get this error : rsync: readlink "/var/www/index.html" failed: Permission denied (13) So I check permissions on the server and after make tests, I notice a file is transferred only if it has these permissions : R-W ! If the file have these permissions : R--, Rsync can't download it !? Command: /usr/bin/rsync -avzr -e "/usr/bin/ssh -i /home/replication/thishost-rsync-key" [email protected]:/var/www/index.html ./ Is it a bug with Rsync ? I find any information about this problem. • Black screen after scheduled resume from sleep

  I have a problem with my two Windows 7 setups at home. Whenever a scheduled task wakes up the machines from sleep, a black screen with a mouse cursor appears. If I move the mouse or press any key, desktop appears. The biggest problem is that during that black screen phase the display, sometimes even the PC too, doesn't go to stand by after a set period of time in power settings. If I get the desktop to show up, standby functions work fine. Display goes blank after a few minutes and as soon as the task doesn't need the PC, it goes back to sleep. It's frustrating that this "feature" is wasting energy and keeps lighting up the pc in the middle of the night for me to find it that way after I wake up. I found a handful of threads on the intertubes about the issue, but there were no answers in any of them. It sometimes happens in my XP machine at work as well.
