  • On clients use generic driver for printer shared by CUPS

    I know this worked really easy with a recent CUPS version some years ago. Unfortunately I fail to do the following with latest CUPS nowadays. How to share a printer without using printer specific drivers on the clients with CUPS? The printer is a Samsung ML-2010. The important fact is that it needs a quite specific library for printing called splix. That is installed on the server and prints well. What makes trouble is using that printer over the network. I found out how to use Avahi under Linux to make use of DNSSD to advertise and discover printers. But as far as I understand the new CUPS offers the internal driver interface on the network. This has 2 major issues: anybody can fiddle with the driver and I don't trust any uncommon printer library to be "network secure" anyone who wants to use my printer including guests needs to install the specific drivers first I remember the old days when I could enable "Share this printer" on the CUPS server and all clients would magically detect the printer and just send their job data to the server and have it do the driver stuff. After everything a read I guess this is related to the changes Apple introduced with CUPS including dropping of the integrated network discovery protocol. If it helps: Server: Ubuntu LTS 12.04 Server with CUPS 1.5.3 Client: Arch Linux with current CUPS 1.6.1 On another box with Ubuntu the printer was setup automatically at least but the mechanism used the Splix library for that.

    I need to install a package. For that I need root access. However the system says that I am not in sudoers file. When trying to edit one, it complains alike! How I am supposed to add myself to the sudoers file if I don't have the right to edit one? I have installed this system and only administrator. What can I do? Edit: I have tried visudo already.   • How to encrypt/decrypt a long string in PHP?

    I doubt if this is encryption but I can't find a better phrase. I need to pass a long query string like this: http://test.com/test.php?key=[some_very_loooooooooooooooooooooooong_query_string] The query string contains NO sensitive information so I'm not really concerned about security in this case. It's just...well, too long and ugly. Is there a library function that can let me encode/encrypt/compress the query string into something similar to the result of a md5() (similar as in, always a 32 character string), but decode/decrypt/decompress-able?

  • Can I view a list of public variables of some Adobe Air app or web flash file from another app?

    I was thinking about creating making AIM pluggin that checks pandora one (desktop) or pandora website periodically to see what is currently playing and update a user's status. I suppose the main question is there a clever way to access a "public" variable from some open Adobe Air process? I KNOW this sounds like some crazy security flaw, but it may also be a feature. I am pretty sure javascript can potentially handle it. Thanks!

    I have a MySQL database from which a view is created. Is is possible to add an auto-incrementing id for each row in the view? I tried CREATE ALGORITHM=UNDEFINED DEFINER=`database_name`@`%` SQL SECURITY DEFINER VIEW `MyView` AS set @i = 0; select @i:=@i+1 as `id` ... but that doesn't work in a View. Sorry, my SQL is weak, any help is appreciated.

    Is there a difference between a package and a folder in eclipse? for example, if I have this hierarchy requirement: java –classpath C:\ChatCompany\BackendChatServer\ -Djava.security.policy=c:\HW2\permissions.policy hw2.chat.backend.main.ChatBackendServer when the package's name is: "hw2.chat.backend.main" and "ChatCompany\BackendChatServer\" is the folder name, then how can I make this separation between a package and a folder in eclipse, so that I can write "package hw2.chat.backend.main" and not "package ChatCompany.BackendChatServer.hw2.chat.backend.main"? thanks

Do you store the sdf file on a storage card? Have you had any issues caused by it? What should I pay attention to when recommending a particular brand or model of an SD card wrt the stability and security for use with SQL Compact?

When a file to be downloaded is clicked, I get the following in the Internet Explorer Information bar: To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has blocked this site from downloading files to you computer. I added a registry key to, HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\ then a REG_DWORD value named "http" with value==2 as given in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/972345/programmatically-add-trusted-sites-to-internet-explorer but still facing same issues. Can some1 advice on this....

  • Strategies for "Always-Connected" Windows Client Data Architecture

    Hi. Let me start by saying: this is my 1st post here, this is a bit lenghty, and I havent done Windows Forms development in years....with that in mind please excuse me if this isn't directly a programming question and please bear with me as I really need the help!! I have been asked to develop a Windows Forms app for our company that talks to a central (local area network) Linux Server hosting a PostgreSQL database. The app is to allow users to authenticate themselves into the system and thereafter conduct the usual transactions with the PG database. Ordinarily, I would propose writing a webforms app against Mono, but the clients need to utilise local resources such as USB peripheral devices, so that is out of the question. While it might not seem clear, my questions are italised below: Dilemma #1: The application is meant to be always connected. How should I structure my DAL/BLL - Should this reside on the server or with the client? Dilemma #2: I have been reading up on Client Application Services (CAS), and it seems like a great fit for authentication, as everything is exposed via URIs. I know that a .NET Data Provider exists for PostgreSQL, but not too sure if CAS will all work on a Linux (Debian) server? Believe me, I would get my hands dirty and try myself, but I need to come up with a logical design first before resources are allocated to me for "trial purposes"! Dilemma #3: If the DAL/BLL is to reside on the server, is there any way I can create data services, and expose only these services to authenticated clients. There is a (security) requirement whereby a connection string with username and password to the database cannot be present on any client machines...even if security on the database side is quite rigid. I'm guessing that the only way for this to work would be to create the various CRUD data service methods that are exposed by an ASP.NET app, and have the WindowsForms make a request for data or persist data to the ASP.NET app (thru a URI) and have that return a resultset or value. Would I be correct in assuming this? Should I be looking into WCF Data Services? and will WCF work with a non-SQL Server database?   • How to install Windows with no CD drive boot option in BIOS?

    I have a new computer which I built from scratch and I am trying to install a copy of Windows Vista on it. I am able to get to the BIOS and change the boot options which are as follows.. -Built-in EFI Shell -SATA: ST31000528AS I have searched around for and everything I find says to boot from the CD rom. However, as you can see. That is not an option for me. So I am wondering if there is another way around this? Is it possible to boot the Disk from the EFI Shell? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks EDIT: I have tried this.. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd744321%28v=ws.10%29.aspx UPDATE: I managed to make my USB bootable via the BIOS and I have copied my windows Vista disk onto my USB via drag and drop. However I am still not able to get the windows install to start. Also I have tried booting it from the EFI shell using the following command.. blk6: blk6:\> \EFI\BOOT\BOOTX64.EFI Still no luck..

    I'm using the Unity 3D engine to build an iPhone app, and when I go to generate my Xcode project for compilation, it includes a few fairly large libraries: Mono.Security.dll.s, System.dll.s, System.Core.dll.s, etc. I don't know if this question is really an Xcode question or a Unity question, but I'm trying to figure out why each of those libraries is being linked - which functions / classes are being referenced - ideally so that I can rewrite my code to remove as many of the dependencies as possible. Does anybody know a way to find this information out?

    By security I mean that encoded string is indistinguishable from random noise and is different on every encryption of the same text so it is impossible to make a guess on encryption algorithm used or do any dictionary attack on the encoded text. Second: output string length does not correspond to the input string length in easy way, so it is not possible of make guessing on that account. Third: it is possible to verify that the provided password is incorrect so the decoding function could return false instead of supposedly decoded random string.

  • 32bit dll not loading with Enable 32 Bit Applications on IIS 7.5

    I have a MVC 3 Web Site referencing a 32 bit DLL. The OS is Windows 2008 R2 x64. The website is in the ASP.NET 4 App Pool. I have turned on Enable32Bit but it doesn't work. I get a Bad Image Exception but can't find out to turn this level of logging on in IIS. I have setup up a page that outputs whether it's running 32bit or 64bit and when I turn on/off the Enable32Bit on the AppPool I get the correct output. The website is also in Full Trust. I'm at a loss to try and and get it to work. I do know that it works on Win7 32bit. Can you suggest some things to try? UPDATE: I have just written a simple Windows Forms App with a button on it which calls my DLL. This was built with target of x86 and it worked fine so there is an issue with IIS or ASP.Net I think. UPDATE 2: Does it matter if the ASP.Net Pipeline is Clasic or Integrated? I've tried both but same problem but thought it was worth asking UPDATE 3: I found this question trying to do the same thing and he gave up which isnt too helpful!!

  • Is there a monitoring software suite that will alert me if it has received no activity in a time period?

    This might be a very basic question, but I am not very familiar with the exact features of Nagios versus Munin versus other monitoring tools. Let's say we have a process that needs to run daily for some very important infrastructure reasons. We've had cases where the process did not run or was otherwise down for a number of days before anyone noticed. I'd like to set up a system that will enable me to easily know when the daily run did not take place for some reason. I can set up this process to send an email on every successful run (or every failed run), but I do not trust that the people receiving this email would notice an absence of an "I'm OK" message. What I am envisioning is some type of "tripwire" service which this V.I.P. (very-important-process) can send a status message to each time it runs, whether successfully or not; and if the "tripwire" service has not received any word from the VIP within a configurable amount of time, it can then send an alert to someone. (The difference between what I envision and the first approach I outlined is a service that sends a message only in abnormal conditions, rather than a service that sends messages each day that the status is normal/OK). Can Nagios be set up to send an alert like this, if it has not heard from a certain service/device/process in N days? Is there another tool out there which does have this feature?

Since an inner Control is a Panel, I'd like to use it as container at design time.     When setting up a new ASP.NET MVC Web Application, the default connection string inside Web.Config is something like this: connectionString="data source=.\SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|aspnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true" I'm just wanting to play around with logging in and registering, etc but when I run the app it obviously can't find a SQL database.
