• Accessing a storage-side snapshot of a cluster-shared volume

  From time to time I am in the situation where I need to get data back from storage-side snapshots of cluster shared volumes. I suppose I just never figured out a way to do it right, so I always needed to: expose the shadow copy as a separate LUN offline the original CSV in the cluster un-expose the LUN carrying the original CSV make sure my cluster nodes have detected the new LUN and no longer list the original one add the volume to the list of cluster volumes, promote it to be a CSV copy off the data I need undo steps 5. - 1. to revert to the original configuration This is quite tedious and requires downtime for the original volume. Is there a better way to do this without involving a separate host outside of the cluster?

• How to find malicious IPs?

  Cacti shows irregular and pretty steady high bandwidth to my server (40x the normal) so I guess the server is udnder some sort of DDoS attack. The incoming bandwidth has not paralyzed my server, but of course consuming the bandwidth and affects performance so I am keen to figure out the possible culprits IPs add them to my deny list or otherwise counter them. When I run: netstat -ntu | awk '{print $5}' | cut -d: -f1 | sort | uniq -c | sort -n I get a long list of IPs with up to 400 connections each. I checked the most numerous occurring IPs but they come from my CDN. So I am wondering what is the best way to help monitor the requests that each IP make in order to pinpoint the malicious ones.   I've got a Windows Server 08 box on SP1 that is having some problems. We've experienced backup problems and I've traced it down to VSS Writers not responding. From the command line, if I type vssadmin list providers, I get Provider name: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0' Provider type: System Provider Id: {b5946137-7b9f-4925-af80-51abd60b20d5} Version: 1.0.0.7 If I type vssadmin list writers, I get this vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp. Waiting for responses. These may be delayed if a shadow copy is being prepared. I could wait this out for hours and it won't move. I looked up how Server 2008 handles VSS writers, and you can't reregister them like you could in Server 2003 http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/windowsserver2008r2general/thread/062cc52c-899b-45f3-8d0c-798b92363f41 Does anyone know how to fix something like this or where to turn next?

• How to login without entering username and password

  I'm a newbie running Ubuntu 9.10. I have two users (wife and me), and each user's screensaver is set to lock so that on wakeup, we get to choose which user's desktop to go to. However, Ubuntu requires a password, so this is pretty tedious. I'd like to switch users without entering any password. I know about this trick that works for the boot login, but it doesn't deal with multiple users. Is it possible to set empty passwords for users in Ubuntu, or skip the password in other ways? (I'm expecting real Linux users to suggest that passwordless users must not get any rights and there be an admin user with a strong password. Yes, you're right. But that's not what this question is about. Thanks.)

  I am looking for a way to acomplish the following: Currently users have home drives mapped via AD profile as follow: \\fileserver\users\username However if once a user was able to access \\fileserver\users and view everyones folder, but had no access to them. This is not ideal since we have people saving important stuff to on their drives. How can I restrict users permissions and views only to THEIR home drives? I also saw this solution, but not sure if it would apply to me: ================================================================================ Share level permissions - Everyone full permission and remove all others On the file/folder level set the following: Authenticated users special permissions on the root of the \\server\homeshare\ to Check the boxes next to the following: Traverse folder / execute file List Folder / read data Read attributes Read extended attributes / List item All other boxed leave unchecked and make sure you apply "This Folder Only" Domain Adminsfull rights and apply “this folder, subfolders, and files” This will block the users from accessing other user home directories. When you create the new user and set the home directory it will create the folder for you with the correct permissions.

  Hello, IETab offers a setting that lets you define sites that should always be opened using IE's rendering engine. This is great and I use it all the time. There are a few sites, though, with which I encounter problems when I access them this way (needless to say that these have some IE-only features, otherwise I would simply use Firefox without IETab). So my question is: is there a way to make IETab (or any other extension that does the same thing) automatically open a specific list of sites in IE? To be clear: I want a way to specify a list of sites that will open an external IE process from Firefox, when clicking on those links or bookmarks from within Firefox.

  I'm setting up an environment for wordpress on apache2, on a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04. In order to get friendly URLS working, I'm trying to set up mod_rewrite. I followed some instructions I found on the net, and used a2enmod. Now. after restarting apache, I'd like to check if the module is actually loaded. The command that I've found for getting a list of loaded modules is this: apache2 -t -D DUMP_MODULES However, this returns an error: apache2: bad user name ${APACHE_RUN_USER} So, how do I actually list all loaded modules, or otherwise check to see if mod_rewrite has been enabled?

• Prompt for user group when logging into OSX domain

  When a user is a member of more than one group, when logging in to a 10.6 machine, it shows a prompt asking for what group to apply settings for. We're using the groups to mount different shares, e.g. Production and Accounts, based on user membership. Often, a user is a member of more than one group, and needs all the drives available. The Open Directory server is running 10.6 also. Is there a way to skip this prompt and apply settings for all groups. I can foresee that there may be conflicts between group settings, but perhaps a priority can be set too? Or is this totally the wrong way to go about this?

  I host my own multiple Websites on my server. How do i setup my own child nameserver? There are 4 different websites, with .com and .net and .ro at the end. I moved them to my own server. My Domain Administration (Registrar) let's me define my own child nameserver with my own IP and i've added my nameserver as my domain nameservers list. ns.something.ro as the first and only in the nameservers list ns.something.ro with my own IP address as the child nameserver I've setup everything and it works (kind of). When i use my ns IP adress directly i can of course access everything. Using "normal" external dnses will not work. As expected others on the web can't resolve correctly. What's wrong? Am i missing something?

I try to debug it, but the debugger says: Unable to attach to the crashing process. The requested operation is not supported. This happens with VS2008 and some other programs, sometimes. What? The? • How to choose my own filename format for subscribed podcast files?

  I subscribe to several podcasts where the filenames of the downloaded mp3 files have no particular pattern to them. When I copy the directory of accumulated mp3 files into my mp3 player, the files play in alphabetical order. What I really want is to play the files chronologically by release date. I currently use iTunes on Windows XP to download the files. What I do now is manually rename the files, adding the date in YYYYMMDD format to the start of each filename so that an alphabetical listing of files will correspond to their chronological order when I listen to them later in PocketTunes on my Palm Centro. Is there some way to get the release date into the filename automatically? If so, I could automate or possibly skip the file renaming step. I would switch from iTunes to something else if that would solve my problem. The file creation time on my local disk isn't a reliable indicator because sometimes I download a few days worth of content at one time, and the files don't necessarily get downloaded in chronological order.

• How do I restore the Gnome Panel volume control in Ubuntu 10.04?

  I use alsa, and I don't have a volume control applet on my Gnome Panel. When I right click and select "add to panel", there is nothing that has to do with "sound", "audio" or "volume" in the list, and the "Indicator Applet" or "Indicator Applet Session" things have no volume controls, or properties that would let you enable any sort of volume control. How can I get a volume control in Ubuntu, so I don't have to run aumix in a terminal or something? I've been using Linux since Redhat 5, it's beyond me why these sorts of problems are still around. Someone should just put a damn "Volume Control" element in the list of things to add to the panel, even if it doesn't work, perhaps showing an error message.

• Capture the build number for a remote-triggered Hudson job?

  I have a very simple inhouse web app from which certain Hudson builds (on another server) can be triggered remotely. I have no problem triggering the builds, but I don't know how to capture the associated build number for later reference. I'm using the buildWithParameters trigger, and the actual result of that call is just a mess of HTML - I don't believe it gives me back the build number. I started down the path of pulling the whole build list for the job (via the api), and then attempting to reconcile that list against my records - but that's much more complicated than I'd like it to be. I also considered sleeping for a few seconds after launching the job, and then grabbing the latestBuild from the Hudson api - but I'm sure that's going to go wrong at some point (someone will fire off two jobs quickly, and I'll get the association wrong).

  Hi, I have an excel sheet for groceries. One column is the name, another is whether to buy it or not (checkbox) and another is the amount. I'd like to have a widget in the top row so that I start typing an item's name and it shows a list of matching items that I can select from, or if I continue to type and there's only one item, completes its name. When the last item is selected, other widgets show the amount, which I can edit and clicking 'check' will check the item in the list. I know this is kind of very specific, but am hoping someone can at least get me started. Thank you, Ittay

  I have some spreadsheets where there are large number of cells that have essentially been used for free text. There is a finite set of values for this free text and most, if not all repeat. eg. A B C D 1 Monkey Gorilla Cat Dog 2 Dog Cat Gorilla Gorilla 3 Dog Dog Dog Cat There are probably 50 or so different cell values spread over multiple sheets and hundreds of rows and columns. I need to analyse this data and count occurancies, which is not a problem other than getting a list of unique values to start with and this has been driving me up the wall. What is the best way to produce this list. So from the above we would have Monkey Dog Cat Gorilla In order of preferred solutions, as this will need to be done monthly. I want to install OpenStack, so I enabled the Cloud Archive repo: sudo add-apt-repository cloud-archive:havana After the subsequent update and upgrade, I noticed python-crypto changed. python-crypto recently fixed a CVE, so I would like to ensure I'm using the patched version of python-crypto. I'd also like to compare the python-crypto in both Ubuntu and Cloud Archive. How does one list the package information for both Ubuntu::python-crypto and CloudArchive::python-crypto? • Repeat the csv header twice without "Append" (PowerShell 1.0)

  I have prepared a PowerShell script to export a list of system users in CSV format. The script can output the users list with Export-csv with single header row (the header row at top). However my requirement is to repeat the header row twice in my file. It is easy to achieve in PowerShell 3.0 with "Append" (e.g. $header | out-file $filepath -Append) Our server envirnoment is running PowerShell 1.0. Hence I cannot do it. Is there any workaround? • Data take on with Drupal 6

  We are migrating our current intranet to Drupal 6 and there is a lot of data within the current system which can be classified into: List data, general lists of fields. Common use is phone list of the employees phone numbers. Document repository. Just basically a web version of a file share for documents. I can easily get the data + meta infomation out, but how do I bulk upload the two types of data into Drupal, as uploading the hundred of thousands of items manually is just not acceptable.

• Run Dialog: Tab Key dont complete commands

  I like to use the Tab key to complete/skip commands/links in Shells/Browsers when typing. But when I hit the tab key in "Run Dialog" causes focus leave Text box, so i'm forced to leave home keys to use arrow keys. Is there a way change this behavior? Edit: I found here a flag that enables autocomplete in Run Dialog. This doesn't solve the question, but it helps when the command you want is the first option listed, because you just press enter instead of moving to arrow key and select the command. In my case this solves about 80% of cases.

• Compare Error logs across service fleet, find unique errors

  I'm looking for a tool where I can list the servers to check, the location of the file and it would return a list of the most common errors across those servers (say like 2 or 3 servers for report brevity) and get a report something like this Server.A Server.B Server.C -------- -------- -------- 42 error.X 39 error.X 61 error.X 21 error.Y 7 error.Y 5 error.A 17 error.B 6 error.A 4 error.Y 4 error.A 2 error.R 3 error.S 3 error.R 1 error.S 1 error.R Of course, excluding timestamps and other error details and just grepping out the common sub-strings and listing them like so. I'd be able to look at the table and see that error.B is unique to Server.A and conclude that there is something up with Server.A. Does something like this already exist? Is this something I'll have to code myself? I'm not necessarily looking for this specific report, just the functionality to find unique errors across a set of error logs.

  I need to find the flavor of Windows that is running using a batch file that will run on anything from Windows NT to Windows 7. I'm using a method based on this page with some minor changes. Systeminfo gives the flavor of Windows that is running. Is there any authoritative list of names that can be returned? If so where would I find the list? • Is there a chroot build script somewhere?

  I am about to develop a little script to gather information for a chroot-jail. In my case this looks (at the first glance) pretty simple: The application has a clean rpm-install and did install almost all files into a sub-directory of /opt. My idea is: Do a find of all binaries Check their library-dependencies Record the results into a list Do a rsync of that list into the chroot-target-directory before startup of the application Now I wonder - ist there any script around that already does such a job (perl/bash/python)? So far I found only specialized solutions for single applications (like sftp-chroot). Update I see three close-votes for the reason "off topic". This is a question that arose because I have to install that ancient piece of software on a server at work. So if you still feel this is off-topic - leave a comment...
