• When upgrading from Vista to Windows 7 on a DELL laptop, how do I know which drivers to reinstall an

  According to Dell's upgrade page for Vista to Windows 7, after using the upgrade assistant the final step is to install drivers. They refer to this page for the order of driver installation, listing 9 items. From there I go to the Dell Drivers and Downloads page, enter my system tag, and get a list of the downloads available for my specific box. That page, by the way, has a link to driver install instructions that lists 10 rather than 9 items. Going to Drivers Help in the side panel and clicking on "In what order should drivers be installed?" shows yet a third list, this one containing 13 items. Not surprisingly, the order of these 3 lists of drivers are not quite the same for the common items! Furthermore, of the 26 files Dell's site recommends for my machine, there are several not shown on any of the 3 lists! I can make determinations for some of these: 6 of them are "applications" so I know which of those I want and that they could probably be safely installed after all drivers. BIOS: I would think this should be unaffected by an OS upgrade so could be skipped. Two tools in the diagnostics category: could probably be done after all drivers. That leaves just a CD/DVD driver and a webcam driver unaccounted for. So my two related questions are these: How critical is the driver installation order and which one do I follow? (Keep in mind this is for an upgrade, not a fresh install.) Where in the order do I insert the CD/DVD and the webcam drivers (if needed) ? Dell's driver download page provides (in theory) the list of all downloads relevant to my specific machine, via the service tag. But do I actually need to reinstall all of them? some? none? How does one determine this? They do label each with Recommended or Optional, so do I need to reinstall all the recommended ones? (Part of the reason for my perplexed frown is that I wonder why I would need to reinstall a CD/DVD driver since I would already be using the drive to install the OS!)

• What does dd conv=sync,noerror do?

  So what is the case when adding conv=sync,noerror makes a difference when backing up an entire hard disk onto an image file? Is conv=sync,noerror a requirement when doing forensic stuff? If so, why is it the case with reference to linux fedora? Edit: OK, so if I do dd without conv=sync,noerror, and dd encounters read error when reading the block (let's size 100M), does dd just skip 100M block and reads the next block without writing something (dd conv=sync,noerror writes zeros to 100M of output - so what about this case?)? And if is hash of original hard disk and output file different if done without conv=sync,noerror? Or is this only when read error occurred?

• Allow different headers on different servers using WFF

  We've got multiple web servers configured in a cluster using Microsoft's Web Farm Framework. One of the things I like to do to help debugging is to create a header in IIS that identifies the server that handled the request. Unfortunately when I try to do this, WFF sets the headers to the same value on all the servers. Is there a way around this? I tried looking into using skipDirectives, but I can't find any documentation on it (other than a little bit showing how to use it to skip directories and bindings). If there is documentation on this, please link to it! I would like to be able to read up more on it in case I need to do other things as well.

It also happens with GTK RecordMyDesktop if I enable the encode on the fly. So, the questions is how to get a normal video pace.   Question: How can I disable inet6 AAAA queries for my LDAP server during (LDAP-backed) NSS lookups on a CentOS (RHEL) 5 machine? Background: I've servers configured to consult ldap://ldap.internal for NSS passwd and group lookups.   I have an account on a shared server. I have jailshell access and also PhpMyAdmin. I want to run mysql commands via SSH but I'm getting an error: $ mysql -u mySqlUser -p mySqlPw Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' I can connect with PHP and phpMyAdmin, so would it be possible to call mysql from the shell and have it connect via an ip and port instead of the socket? The file /var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock does not exist - maybe that is intentional, and the only thing in /etc/my.cnf is [mysqld] skip-innodb More Info I don't have access to change system settings. I did a search in /var for mysql.sock but found nothing. However, phpMyAdmin might be connecting via a socket somehow: Really it would just be great if I could connect via IP. • OS X server 10.6 - how to restore default groups?

  I've set up my OS X server as an open directory master first, then (experimenting), I've changed it to standalone server, then set it back as an open directory master again. Now, all the default groups I saw before are gone (Domain Administrators, Domain users etc). Do you know how to restore these groups? Note that the groups are gone only from the Workgroup Manager UI. They do seem to be still there otherwise. id -G gives the usual list of groups. If I create an account and makes its primary group 'staff', Workgroup Manager shows all the inherited groups properly (but not on the main list). If I create an account and associate it to a new group I just created, then the account has no inherited groups...

• Why does subshell not inherit exported variable (PS1)?

  After some debugging I finally narrowed down the problem as to why my X session xterm prompt does not appear according to my PS1 setting. If I run sh -c env, it doesn't even show PS1 in the list. Why? export PS1='test' sh -c env # No PS1 in the list, default prompt appearance (shell name + version) Substituting sh with bash yields same result, alas the behavior appears to be the same for both shells/modes. As far as I understood from man bash, the environment resulting from command run by shell with -c should include the exported variables. And it does - exporting FOOBAR results in FOOBAR listed in env run by subshell. It appears that the story is different if the variable is PS1 however. What is going on? I want my prompt propagated throughout the process tree and system. For matters sake, it is set in /etc/profile.d/user.sh (a file I created myself) with the following: PS1='\u@\H \w \$ ' export PS1 I am running Arch Linux (updated yesterday.)

  I work for a small company and we have fallen into the fad of "email campains" a.k.a Junk mail. So far the company has gotten a subscriber list from our website, and paid a good chunk of change for a emailer program. The problem is, Our list has close to 4,000 people on it and growing. with gmail only allowing 100 emails per account through on SMTP and I am on a tight budget so I cant hire anyone else. I was thinking of doing a dedicated mail server off of the website server we have running in the office. Is it possible? to make emails on your own server, and then send it through your own SMTP? if it is, what software would I need and is if free or low cost at least. We run a WAMP server, i set it up just for information, but i could switch it to lamp or whatever if need be. Thank you for your time and youre answers

  Does anyone know how to do this? I just want a one-shot command to "update everything" over the command line? This is for a remote server so it must be over the command line. I used: $ sudo pkg list -u to see the list of packages that are out of date, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to say, "ok, update them". • Retaining expanded/contracted nodes in Word 2010's navigation pane

  I have a lengthy document in Word 2010 which makes copious use of standard header styles. These display hierarchically (and very usefully!) in the navigation pane. But the list of these sections and subsections in the navigation pane is somewhat lengthy, with all nodes being expanded by default. I am now working near the end of the document so every time I open the document I contract the first so many header 1 nodes to compress the list to fit on one screen. I then have direct access to the later sections while still letting me access the earlier sections if needed. The problem is that as soon as I close the document all the customization I did in the navigation pane is lost. Is there any option or setting somewhere that will retain the expanded or contracted state of nodes in the navigation pane?

• Best practice for ONLY allowing MySQL access to a server?

  Here's the use case: I have a SaaS system that was built (dev environment) on a single box. I've moved everything to a cloud environment running Ubuntu 10.10. One server runs the application, the other runs the database. The basic idea is that the server that runs the database should only be accessible by the application and the administrator's machine, who both have correct RSA keys. My question: Would it be better practice to use a firewall to block access to ALL ports except MySQL, or skip firewall / iptables and just disable all other services / ports completely? Furthermore, should I run MySQL on a non-standard port? This database will hold quite sensitive information and I want to make sure I'm doing everything possible to properly safeguard it.   I find it really annoying that for some radio stations, which have two or more servers to cope with the network load, there is not one single entry in amaroks playlist but two or more entries. This makes it hard to pick the radio station from the list I like to listen to because all the entries are always shown with the last played track as name, and even if I only have a few radio stations in my list there will eventually be many different entries. And, if I use the keyboard shortcuts to navigate the playlist I always have to remember that radio station X has for example four entries in the playlist, so I have to press the shortcut for switching tracks four times to actually switch the to the next station. Now, ideally I would like some solution for amarok, but if someone knows of another media player that does this or something I would appreciate that information as well.

  Here's what I'm trying to do: I would like to create a list of documents on a site in my company's SharePoint site. Each document should have specific user's permissions to view and edit it. For example: The list is for performance reports. John has his out there called "John_PR_09.docx". Only him and his supervisor should have permissions to view, edit, or do anything to it. And then another employee has hers out there with permissions for only her and her supervisor, and so on... I have tested this out with a document that I removed the groups and users from (since they inherit permissions from it's parent) and only gave my user account permissions to. I then asked someone else to try and open and she could, she even wrote "TEST" on the document and saved it. What am I doing wrong? I thought I stopped it from inheriting permissions from it's parent and only gave myself rights to edit it.

• Windows 7 default VPN - Single Click to Connect

  The default way to connect to a VPN (standard includedd MS client) seems to be to click on the network icon in the system tray to expand it, then pick the VPN connection, and click the connect button. This brings up a dialog where you can enter your username and password. I have told the VPN connection to remember my credentials. Is there some way I can skip that dialog and just have it connect? I have tried using rasdial.exe, and I can connect as long as I pass the username and password as arguments. It doesn't seem to want to use the stored credentials for some reason, maybe I need to store them with an elevated account.

• How to block all multicast traffic travelling through a Cisco Catalyst 3750

  Something changed today. I can't seem to track down what, but one of our 3750s decided that it was going to forward all the multicast traffic it saw from the ghost server across every VLAN it has. I've tried writing a simple access group that consists of the following: access-list 100 deny ip any 224.0.0.10 0.0.0.255 access-list 100 permit ip any any I apparently mistakenly assumed that once applied to an interface that it would block all of the multicast traffic on that interface regardless of VLAN. I do not want any multicast traffic flowing through this particular switch to any VLAN or even to stay on the same VLAN beyond this switch. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Is it possible to sync specific router settings across multiple routers?

  I recently purchased a second Linksys wireless routers set up on the other side of my home and I am wondering if it is possible to somehow sync particular settings between the two? For instance what I am really after is the "MAC Filter List". I would "like" to be able to maintain the list on both routers without having to manually type in the field values. maybe this isn't possible, or has an easy answer, but hopefully those of you who know will cut me a bit of slack. I tried to "google" the answer to this of course, but it seems any searches with the words "sync" and "router" and/or "wifi" result in pages of people having issues with synching their iOS devices over wifi. I would say that have decent amount of networking knowledge in regards to average home networks, and I imagine in larger businesses / corporations they must have a "simpler" way of maintaining things like this. Any insight to point me in the right direction will be much appreciated.

• How can I make Excel correlate data from two data sets into a single graph?

  I have two datasets, one being sparser than the other. They look like this: Data Set 1: 4 50 5 55 6 60 7 70 8 80 Data Set 2: 4 10 6 20 8 30 I have several hundred points instead of this few. I want them in the same graph, the X axis being 4-8, the y axis being 0-100ish, and two lines, one for each data set. What I get is two lines, not correlated at all along the X axis, and the X axis being labeled from one of the two datasets, with the labels being wrong for the other. The smaller data set is one-point-per-tick on the x axis, when I need it to skip ticks and actually line up with the other data set. Not married to excel, willing to try this in something else if it's free.

• How to apply Outlook Junk Mail rules using Hotmail Connector?

  I use Outlook 2010 with Hotmail connector. MS says that you can sync your Outlook rules with your Hotmail but I cant see how. My actual problem is - I add a guy to my Junk blocked senders list (and I check it visually - it is in the list). But I keep receiving emails from this guy. It doesnt go to the Junk folder in Outlook. I need my Outlook to honor the rules locally at least. Is it possible?
