• Avoid Ajax loaded content for search engine bots

  A website I run has a lot of content that is being loaded using Ajax. The reason for using Ajax is that the content generation takes some time (a few seconds), because it loads data from other websites using their respective APIs. My concern is, that search engine bots will not see any useful content. The solution I've been thinking about would be to serve search engine bots differently, so that the content will be displayed directly for them. Technically, this would not be a big problem. My question is: Will search engines (read: Google) consider this behaviour as website cloaking? Are there other concerns I might not have considered?

• Problems with HP laptop

  So the problem is...every time I reboot or shutdown laptop and when the laptop is booting again I get screen (before loading OS) that HP discovered overheating and system went into hibernate. But the point is that laptop is not overheating nor going into hibernate by itself. Also becouse of the hybrid graphic cards I cannot install additional drivers. Desktop resolution and all works perfectly but I cannot use unity 3D also openGL doesn't work as it should (with cairo docks) As i've read some posts, people say that switcheero doesn't work on 12.04 so I haven't tried it.

• What does it mean that hosting ToS DOESN'T allows HOTLINKS and WHY is it like that?

  Free hosting services often doesn't allow to use hotlinks. I'm not sure if I understand it well and what is the reason of such a disaproval. I would like to have pictures for my webpages in Photobucket e.g. which is allowed to have hotlinks and use those pictures using hotlinks on my sites. Is it that what is not allowed? What is a problem for free host server owners to accept such links? Bandwidth of Photobucket is used only as I understand and it is completely legal. I'v read quite enough abt hotlinks, but I can't understand this simple issue.

• Tempescope Displays Weather by Recreating It

  Yesterday we showed you an umbrella stand that signals raining/clear skies by color, today we have something even more interesting: an ambient desktop weather station that recreates the outside weather. The Tempescope pulls down the current weather report from Weather Underground’s API and feeds it to an Arduino board which in turn controls the device. When it’s raining, it pumps water down to simulate rain in the chamber. When there is lightening, LEDs flash. When there is cloud cover, an ultrasonic generator creates a fine mist inside the cylinder. Finally, on sunny days the entire thing glows warmly. To say that we want one would be an understatement. • Why do large IT projects tend to fail or have big cost/schedule overruns?

  I always read about large scale transformation or integration project that are total or almost total disaster. Even if they somehow manage to succeed the cost and schedule blow out is enormous. What is the real reason behind large projects being more prone to failure. Can agile be used in these sort of projects or traditional approach is still the best. One example from Australia is the Queensland Payroll project where they changed test success criteria to deliver the project. • Good book or tutorial for learning how to apply integration methods

  I'm looking to animate a graph layout using edges as springs and nodes as weights ( a node with more links will have a bigger weight ). I'm not capable of wrapping my head around the usage of mathematical and physics relations in my application. As far as i read, Runge Kutta 4 ( preferably ) or Verlet will be a good choice, but i have problems with understanding how they really work, and what physics equations should i apply. If i can't understand them, i can't use them. I'm looking for a book or a tutorial which describe the things that i need.

• Shotwell issues in 11.10

  I had used Shotwell happily previously then updated to Natty last week. Despite Shotwell showing on the tool bar on screen, when clicked, nothing happened, and it ignored my SD card when loaded. I read all sorts of remedies and tried everything to no avail. When I next turned on the laptop, Ocelot was available so with nothing to loose, I upgraded again. Still no Shotwell. Tried all the new fixes and now atleast I have the icon pictures but nothing behind it. When I ran the command to load the log file, Shotwell loaded and all my photos are present. Exited programme, and now nothing. Can anyone tell me where I have gone wrong please.

• Apple Developer Enterprise Program?

  I'm building an iOS application for a client (not an enterprise but non-profit association with under than 500 employess), distributed in a free version and a "paid" one. The free version will be available with iTunes/AppStore, no problem with that. But about the paid one... the distribution my client wants is different. They want to distribute it to their clients as a bonus in their subscription, and so, to control this distribution. The first answer would be "iOS Developer Enterprise Program", but it's not an enterprise and have less than 500 employees. Will the fact that my client will distribute the app' with a subscription be a problem ? I spend a lot of time to read documentation, but it is not very clear. I'm a bit lost, I admit it. Any help would grateful.

• Opinions on logging in multiprocess applications

  We have written an application that spawns at least 9 parallel processes. All processes generate a lot of logging information. Currently we are using Pythons QueueHandler to consolidate all logs into one file. Unfortunately this sometimes results in very messy files which make them hard to read (e.g. Track what exactly is going on in one thread). Do you think it is a viable option to separate all messages into dedicated files, or is this going to make things even more messy due to the high number of files? What are your general experiences when writing log files for multiprocessed/multithreaded applications?

• Structure gameobjects and call events

  I'm working on a 2D tile based game in which the player interacts with other game objects (chests, AI, Doors, Houses etc...). The entire map will be stored in a file which I can read. When loading the tilemap, it will find any tile with the ID that represents a gameobject and store it in a hashmap (right data structure I think?). private static HashMap<Integer, Class<GameObject>> gameObjects = new HashMap<Integer, Class<GameObject>>(); How exactly would I go about calling, and checking for events? I figure that I would just call the update, render and input methods of each gameobject using the hashmap. Should I got towards a Minecraft/Bukkit approach (sorry only example I can think of), where the user registers an event, and it gets called whenever that event happens, and where should I go as in resources to learn about that type of programming, (Java, LWJGL). Or should I just loop through the entire hashmap looking for an event that fits? Thanks waco

  I have written a small front-end to the Festival TTS system using Python/Django. I wish to deploy it on the Google App Engine cloud. A few questions: My application uses the Festival app 'text2wave'. Will is work on the cloud? I have used Python primitives like subprocess.call() to invoke the aforementioned program. Will that work? If your answer to any or both of (1) and (2) is no, is there a free api on the web that I can use (from the appengine)? I read somewhere about placing calls from Phono to a Voxeo backend, but I'm not sure what that means. I am aware of the Google Translate extension that allows translation using an HTTP GET (REST) request, but here the text is limited to 100 chars. Bad. Plus, they may take it down any point of time.

• Changes to File Store Provider in UCM PS3

  In the recent PS3 release of UCM (11.1.1.4.0) there are some significant changes to the File Store Provider (FSP) configuration. For new PS3 installs (not upgrades from PS2) the FSP default storage rule includes a dispersion rule that will change the web-layout and vault paths by adding dispersion directories to the paths to limit the number of files in the vault and web-layout directories. What that means is that if you install a new PS3 UCM instance and migrate content in from a previous version of UCM the web URL will change. That is a critical problem for web sites and just general document management.   Hi, I've got a Flex 3 website. When I in Google's webmaster tools - Your site on the web - Keywords, none are listed. Does anyone have an all-Flex site that has keywords listed for it the above? The sites been up for about a month. It's been indexed by Google. I have keyword metatags in the site, which from what I've read Google ignores. • Help me classify this type of software architecture

  I read some books about software architecture as we are using it in our project but I can't classify the architecture properly. It's some kind of Enterprise Architecture, but what exactly... SOA, ESB (Enterprise Service Bus), Message Bus, Event Driven SOA, there are so many terms in Enterprise software.... The system is based on custom XML messages exchanges between services. (it's not SOAP, nor any other XML based standard, just plain XML). These messages represent notifications (state changes) that are applied to the Domain model, (it's not like CRUD when you serialize the whole domain object, and pass it to service for persistence). The system is centralized, and system participants use different programming languages and frameworks (c++, c#, java). Also, messages are not processed at the moment they are received as they are stored first and the treatment begins on demand. It's called SOA+EDA -:)

• Routing PHP memcached calls to Oracle Coherence

  A new post Getting Started with the Coherence Memcached Adaptor from David Felcey shows how PHP memcached calls can automatically be routed to store data in Oracle Coherence 12c. This is possible now Coherence 12.1.3 supports Memcached clients using the Binary Memcached protocol. David's post shows how the Coherence Memcached adaptor can be configured as a proxy service that runs in the Coherence cluster. There's nothing particular to configure in the PHP application, except to enable memcached.use_sasl = 1 So what is Coherence? It is an "in-memory data grid solution", with a number of advanced features. You can read more in the Oracle Coherence 12C Data Sheet.

• Unity does not use the categories from the .desktop files

  I installed the educational version of Ubuntu with Unity. This is for kids. The most important applications are the ones that the descriptions says are specially added for kids. Trying to find them is a pain in the applications directory. They are organized in the main menu, but Unity does not use the main menu information for anything. Bottom line, I am now going to reinstall Ubuntu and NOT include Unity. The panels feature is nice, but there needs to some ability to organize the applications -- either with a menu or a directory structure that is read. The .desktop files indicate categories ... like education. Why does Unity not use this information?
