• How to facilitate code reviews in a small team for embedded software?

  Short Question Does a cost-effective tool / workflow exist to facilitate code reviews in a small team? More specifically, a small team that relies on post-commit code reviews. Background Our team currently consists of 3 full time and 1 part time software engineers, with plans on hiring more in the near future. Due to our team size and volume of projects we all must juggle, the pre-commit workflow that major tools (such as Review Board and Code Collaborator) use is not obtainable for us right now. The best we can do at the moment is to perform post-commit reviews before major releases or as time permits. Nearly all of our projects are hosted on RepositoryHosting.com (which I highly recommend) and contain a mixture of SVN and GIT repositories. Current Thoughts Since I cannot find a tool that fits our needs right now, I am turning to TRAC that is built into our repository's site. At the moment we use TRAC to file tickets and track milestones, so to me this seems like a natural fit for code review results as well. The direction I am heading in right now is to use a spread sheet(s) to log all of the bugs and comments. Do some macro magic to get it in a format that I can use TRAC's import ticket method and use TRAC's ticketing system to create the action items / bug reports automatically. The auto ticket generation is darn near a must have, adding in bugs and comments one at a time from a web-gui is really painful. Secondary Question If this workflow makes sense, is there a good / standard template to use as a code review log?

• How do I get a Broadcom BCM4311 working?

  I'm having serious problems installing the broadcom drivers for ubuntu 11.04. It worked perfectly on my previous version, but now, it is impossible. I'm a user with no advance knowledge in linux, so I would need clear explanations on make, compile, etc. I was following the instructions on the following blog, with no luck. Broadcom BCM4311 Wireless not working Can someone help me? Edit: For the command: "lspci | grep Network", I get the following message: 06:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) For the command: iwconfig, i get the following: lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. When i follow the following steps (from the above link), there are a NO error message at all: open the 'Synaptic Package Manager' and search for bcm uninstall the bcm-kernel-source package make sure that the firmware-b43-installer and the b43-fwcutter packages are installed type into terminal: cat /etc/modprobe.d/* | egrep '8180|acx|at76|ath|b43|bcm|CX|eth|ipw|irmware|isl|lbtf|orinoco|ndiswrapper|NPE|p54|prism|rtl|rt2|rt3|rt6|rt7|witch|wl' (you may want to copy this) and see if the term blacklist bcm43xx is there if it is, type cd /etc/modprobe.d/ and then sudo gedit blacklist.conf put a # in front of the line: blacklist bcm43xx then save the file (I was getting error messages in the terminal about not being able to save, but it actually did save properly). reboot 'End of procedure' Before (not ubuntu 11.04), if i wanted to connect wireles, i just went to the icon at the upper side of the screen, click, showed ALL the wireless network available, and done. Now, the only options i see are: Wired Network Auto Eth0 Disconnect VPN Enable networking Connection information Edit connection. hope above info is enough for your help.

• Demo on Data Guard Protection From Lost-Write Corruption

  Today I received the news a new demo has been made available on OTN for Data Guard protection from lost-write corruption. Since this is a typical MAA solution and a very nice demo I decided to mention this great feature also in this blog even while it's a recommended best practice for some time. When lost writes occur an I/O subsystem acknowledges the completion of the block write even though the write I/O did not occur in the persistent storage. On a subsequent block read on the primary database, the I/O subsystem returns the stale version of the data block, which might be used to update other blocks of the database, thereby corrupting it.  Lost writes can occur after an OS or storage device driver failure, faulty host bus adapters, disk controller failures and volume manager errors. In the demo a data block lost write occurs when an I/O subsystem acknowledges the completion of the block write, while in fact the write did not occur in the persistent storage. When a primary database lost write corruption is detected by a Data Guard physical standby database, Redo Apply (MRP) will stop and the standby will signal an ORA-752 error to explicitly indicate a primary lost write has occurred (preventing corruption from spreading to the standby database). • early audio offset in Audacity and VLC, but not Banshee

  I'm editing audio files with speech in Audacity, marking particular types of speech. I just noticed that files edited in Windows have different intervals marked than files edited in Ubuntu. After testing and confirming this error, it seems that the audio playback in Ubuntu clips the sound too early from the end (early offset), which causes the person doing the editing to mark the interval wrongly. Interestingly, the error appears in Audacity and VLC (which I sometimes use for playback), but NOT Banshee. Since both Audacity and VLC have this problem, I assume it is not application-specific. I don't know why Banshee handles this without problem though... Are there any ALSA or Pulseaudio settings that are likely to cause this problem (I know very little about either)? The task itself does not appear to consume large amounts of resources, but I am on an old laptop, so here are my specs: Ubuntu 11.10. Dell XPS m1210 1.6 GHz Intel Core, 2 x 512 Mb 667 MHz RAM, Audio device: Intel Corporation N10/ICH 7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 01). • Ubuntu 14.04 ATI Radeon open source driver with distorted video playback

  Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated. • Restore audio settings - cannot open mixer: No such file or directory

  The internal speaker of my laptop never functionned under Ubuntu. I tried to follow indication on the web and now the jack audio does not work either. The graphic interface for audio management now displays a 'dummy output' instead of the three possible outputs I used to have (one of them was working for the jack output). In a terminal alsamixer raises an error: cannot open mixer: No such file or directory I did try to remove and reinstall alsa-utils but it did not change anything. This happened after a failed atempt to install alsa-driver-linuxant_1.0.23.1_all.deb from here. My sound card seems to be not recognised anymore. After reboot I have no more the sound icon in menu bar the upper right corner. I think I have removed my sound card driver. Indeed, the command sudo lshw -class multimedia indicated audi device as unclaimed. Any idea how I could revert to a better situation (that is jack support and alsa working)?   I have a degree in Business Administration, because at the time I didn't know what I wanted to do. I have been interested in programming for the past 2 years and have taken some action to self-teach. My experience/ knowledge base is limited to the following: -Read Kochan's Programming in C -Read IOS and Objective-C from the Big Nerd Ranch series -Obtained a C++ at NYU - thought it would be a good way to start to get a grasp on OO & design I would like to continue developing my skills, but most of all, re-orient how I am perceived as a professional. I am fully aware of how much a novice to this subject and would greatly appreciate any guidance anyone could give me. I currently have a job so full-time is not an option My goal is to become a software/ applications developer My questions are: -Should i take up a second bachelors in computer science? or a masters? or continue taking professional certificate programs (how are these viewed?) -If masters in computer science, would that make sense, if I dont have the formal foundation?   I have 4 WD 1TB drives which I want to 4x1TB Raid5. I am not sure what course of action to take next. How do I configure my 4th drive (sde) to align with the rest? Will this affect performance? • Ubuntu 12.04 LTS , Dell d410 output to External Monitor/TV with docking

  I am not able to see the video output on My external monitor/TV after installing 12.04 LTS. I had the same issue with 11 versions also. This issue does not happen on 10.04 LTS version. This is my setup. Dell latitude D410 with Intel Mobile 915 GM/910GML express controller using the Dell docking station Connecting to my 42inch TV with DVI (from Docking) to HDMI cable (on TV) If i close the lid, some times i am able to see the video output on TV, but the resolution is making the fonts so small, i cannot even see it and when i click displays option to change the resolution, the output goes off completely and it is shown now on the laptop screen. one time, i got the output on both the screens, but i am not able to replicate that scenario even after trying the Fn+F8 key option on my laptop. earlier some time back when i ran version 11.x ubuntu, i was able to get the output on both the screens (basically mirrored output) with large font resolution on my TV using the monitor Test tool as mentioned here :http://www.bigfatostrich.com/2011/05/solved-ubuntu-11-04-broken-external-display/ The problem with this approach is that i have to do it every time i restart the machine and more over the video output is present on both the screens (mirrored), which is of no use. As i stated before, this does not happen with 10.04 LTS. With 10.04 LTS my laptop screen is off automatically and the output is seen on TV/external display. Can anyone share any options that i can try? How can we achieve the behavior of 10.04 LTS with respect to the External display on 12.04 LTS . Thankyou very much for your help in advance.

• Ubuntu and racadm

  I recently purchased a used poweredge 1850 server and it came with a DRAC card. After wiping the HDD and installing ubuntu server 12.04.3 LTS amd64 on it, I am now trying to gain access to the DRAC which I believe is version 4. I have properly configured the DRAC to use it's own IP on my LAN and when I point my browser to the IP address, I am greeted with the DRAC login page (it has the dell logo and everything). However, after trying the credentials of root/calvin, I was denied access. So I think that the previous owners had set their own password. After doing some reading, it appears that I can reset the credentials to the default using racadm config -g cfgUserAdmin -o cfgUserAdminPassword -i 1 newpassword but upon entering the command, I get this error: bash: /usr/sbin/racadm: No such file or directory This holds true even if I run sudo su prior to running the racadm command. If, however, I run sudo racadm config -g cfgUserAdmin -o cfgUserAdminPassword -i 1 newpassword there are no errors. Yet, when I try to log into the DRAC via the web interface using the credentials of root/newpassword I am still not granted access. I installed the dell utilities via the guide at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportMachinesServersDellNotes. I first tried to install the 64 bit version that is on the dell repositories, but after that was unsuccessful, I just followed the guide verbatim. No errors were produced in either case. I even followed the information at the bottom of the guide by executing sudo pppd /dev/ttyS1 1382400 crtscts noipdefault noauth lock persist connect 'chat -v "" CLIENT CLIENTSERVER "\\c"' but obviously, replacing the /dev/ttyS1 with the correct information for my system. ls -l /usr/sbin/ | grep racadm yields -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 87930 Sep 16 04:03 racadm I have tried these credentials after each attempt of changing the password: root/calvin root/newpassword admin/calvin admin/newpassword All have been unsuccessful. What is the next course of action that I should take?

In a nutshell, the Google Maps API allow you to display maps on your website, to add markers onto the map, and to compute the latitude and longitude of an address, among many other tasks. With some Google Maps API experience under my belt, I decided it would be fun to implement a store locator feature and share it here on 4Guys. A store locator lets a visitor enter an address or postal code and then shows the nearby stores. Typically, store locators display the nearby stores on both a map and in a grid, along with the distance between the entered address and each store within the area. • 12.04 grub unable to boot on /sde, upgrade-grub and boot-repair failed, please help

  My problem is I've 4 disks in a raid array listed as sda, sdb... sdd and grub 2 refuses to boot on /sde (the 5th disk, standalone and containing a clean install of 12.04 64 bits). I tried all solutions but all fail. (live CD/USB with grub-setup, also tried repair-grub, and tried also in the "grub rescue" set prefix= etc). I also tried to deactivate the RAID array in the BIOS, but I'd rather not destroy it, and I didn't find a way to make the standalone disk as '/sda1' (this would satisfy grub). In the BIOS, the would-be /sda is the only bootable hard disk; it ends up as /sde and grubs complains. I've made repair-grub issue a pastebin. I always end up in grub-rescue and I'm stuck. I need Ubuntu to boot so that I can add the device array handler for my disks. I can't switch the disks and I can't disconnect the SATA RAID controller. I need: (a) a workaround so that grub starts on /sde; or (b) a way to change the order in which Ubuntu sees the disks, at boot time. I could then provide grub with a /sda1. • Which is the best free ide/plugin for struts2?

  Hello friends, I have just learnt struts 2 and now I have taken up a full fledged project in it. I learnt the basics of struts 2 in Netbeans with it's struts2 plugin. But I am not at all happy with it, as it is very basic and I end up doing most of the work. It is obviously better than plain-vanilla text editor, but still not at all near to what netbeans provides for springs and hibernate. I know because netbeans provides native support for springs and hibernate, it is meant to be better. I don't mind changing my IDE if i get better support for struts2! So my questions are Please list all the free IDEs where native support for struts2 is provided. And if possible please compare them. Please list all the plugins that are available for eclipse for struts2 development. I have heard there are better plugins in eclipse. Also, if there are better plugins in any other IDE (other than netbeans or eclipse of course), please list them giving links. Please give me some tips which I'll need before starting a full blown project in Struts2. I haven't worked on any project on Struts2. • 12.04 No Sound - ALC888 / Radeon 3200HD

  Evening all. I have a MSI U230 netbook, MV40 processor, 4Gb RAM with integrated ATI Radeon 3200HD grahics & an ALC888 codec integrated soundcard. It has HDMI out as well. I've tried a few distro's and have been around linux for a short time. I reckon I've settled on Ubuntu 12.04 (32bit) due to it doing pretty much everything I want it to. I'm working with a fresh install right now. I recently re-installed when I was going in circles trying to solve my problem before. I install Ubuntu and it works, except for the sound. I have tried things like reinstalling Alsa, editing my asound.conf file, installing HDA Verb and a few other things. Its at the point where I need to ask for help... It’s obvious, that VS can’t address more than 2Gb of RAM, and when that limit is over, build process is fail. OS on my PC is Win x64,  so I “charge” devenv.exe by using editbin.exe utility – in the VS Command prompt I run following: editbin "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Common7\IDE\devenv.exe" /LARGEADDRESSAWARE This command edits the image to indicate that the application can handle addresses larger than 2 gigabytes. After that FBX file successfully built! Of course, you must put proper path to devenv.exe, depend on your installation path. If you are on Win x86, you need to do additional action – more info here.   P.S.: although now you can build a bigger files, than usual, keep in mind, that XNA have some restrictions on vertex buffer size etc., depend on your current XNA project profile (Reach or HiDef). And if your model’s vertexbuffer size more than 64Mb (with Reach profile), that model can’t be built and raise an error.

• Would Using a PHP Framework Be Beneficial in My Context?

  I've just started work at a small start-up company who mainly uses PHP to develop their front-end apps. I had no prior PHP experience before joining, and this has led to my apps becoming large pieces of spaghetti code. I essentially started by adding code to implement an initial feature, and then continued to hack in more code to implement further features – without much thought for the overall design. The apps themselves output XML to render on small mobile devices. I recently started looking into frameworks that I could use. I reckon an advantage would be that they seem to force developers to modularise their programs using good-practice design patterns. This seems great for someone in my position. The extra functions they provide, for example: interfacing with databases in such a way as to make SQL injection impossible, would be very useful too. The downside I can see is that there will be a lot of overhead for me in terms of the time taken to learn the framework itself (while still getting to grips with PHP itself). I'm also worried that it will be overkill for the scale of the apps we develop. They tend to be programs that interface with a fairly simple back-end DB, and will generate about 5 different XML screens. Probably around 1 or 2 thousand lines of code. The time it takes just to configure the frameworks may not be worth it. The final problem I can see is that developers in the company – who have to go over my code, and who do not know the PHP framework I may use – will have a much harder time understanding it. Given those pros and cons, I'm still not sure on what the best course of action will be; so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

• Getting a lot of postmaster undeliverable notices for non-existent users

  I've had my domain (straightpathsql.com) for a few years now. I host my e-mail with Google Accounts for business and have for awhile. ALl of the sudden in the past week I am starting to get a lot of postmaster delivery fail notices from various domains, most of them involving bogus e-mail addresses at my domain ([email protected], for example)... My assumption here is that someone is trying to relay on some other host (not my hosts which are secure through google apps for business, I presume) and there isn't much I can do to stop it. But I just want to make sure there isn't something else I need to be looking at here.. An example delivery fail notice is below.. I know nothing of those addresses below and they look like garbage... (Quick edit: the reason I get these messages is I set myself up as a catch all, so it doesn't matter what e-mail you send a note to at my domain, I'll get it if the account isn't setup... All of the failure messages are sent to bogus addresses on my domain) The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable. • Subsumption architecture vs. perceptual control theory

  I'm a new person to AI field and I have to research and compare 2 different architectures for a thesis I'm writing. Before you scream (homework thread), I've been reading on these 2 topics only to find that I'm confusing myself more.. let me first start with stating briefly what I know so far. Subsumption is based on the fact that targets of a system are different in sophistication, thus that requires them to be added as layers, each layer can suppress (modify) the command of the layers below it, and there are inhibitors to stop signals from execution lets say. PCT stresses on the fact that there are nodes to handle environmental changes (negative feedback), so the inputs coming from an environment go through a comparator node and then an action is generated by that node, HPCT or (Hierarchical PCT) is based on nesting these cycles inside each other so a small cycle to avoid crashing would be nested in a more sophisticated cycle that targets a certain location for example. My questions, am I getting this the right way? am I missing any critical understanding about these 2 models? also any idea where I can find simplified explanations for each theory (so far been struggling trying to understand the papers from Google scholar :< ) /Y
