• Shut down Netbook by closing lid - ubunti 13.10

  My wife has an Acer Aspire One (with the SSD Card and an SD expansion card). It has never been able to hibernate or suspend, always creating errors and occasionally trashing the data on the SD card, which is the home partition so it's unfortunate. To get around the problem I have set all exit methods to produce shutdown - she tends to simply shut the lid. I'm aware the default behaviour has for some time been to suspend, but I've got round that using the gnome tweak tool. However, I've just installed 13.10 and whilst I have installed the gnome tweak tool and set it to shut down the system appears to be ignoring/bypassing the setting, electing to suspend when the lid is shut. Can anyone tell me how to fix it please? I'm quite happy to get my hands dirty with the command line.

• Where is the gtk# widget for windows forms in mono?

  Ok, I downloaded mono to program in c#. The installation worked fine and I have mono up and running. The problem is, I can't find the toolbox that contains stuff like: Common controls containers Menus and toolbars All Windows Forms THIS IS FOR THE VISUAL DESIGN PART! I cant find them! I also can't see the window to work on. (By default its called "Form1") Im trying to get mono to look like this: http://www.mono-project.com/File:Md2.png See, the window in the middle called "MainWindow" I can't see that in mono. also, on the top right, I cant find that widget box! • Security for LDAP authentication for Collabnet

  In a previous post, I wrote about how to get LDAP authentication working in Collabnet. By default, all LDAP users are put into the Users role on the server.  For most purposes, this is just fine, and I don’t have a way to change this.  The documentation gives hints that you can add them to other roles, but for now, I don’t have the need. However, adding permissions to different repositories is a different question. To add them, go to the repositories list, select Access Rules and then you can enter in their username, as it sits in Active Directory to the lists for the repositories or for the predefined groups that you have created.  To my knowledge, you cannot use the Active Directory groups in collabnet, which is a big problem.  Needing to micromanage users really limits the usefulness of the LDAP integration. • Installed Ubuntu on 12.04 on my MacBook Air now I want to expand the partition

  I recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a 40GB partition on my Mac Book Air (5,2). I'm having so much fun with it, I'm ready to make the switch permanently and replace it as the primary OS on my machine. I realize I can wipe the machine and start from scratch, but I'm looking for alternatives since I like my current setup. Options are... Create a backup and restore the back up to a larger partition (Assuming I should keep the default OS X install for firmware updates) Create a backup and restore to the entire drive (create a restore usb stick for OSX - not sure if that's possible?) re-size my current partition and wipe the OS X partition and either, A. re-install OS X (similar to option 1) or B. create the USB key (similar to option 2). Thoughts? Any other suggestions? Would also like thoughts on the "optimal" or "best practice" for partitioning Ubuntu. Thanks!

• Why is using an external USB drive or USB printer causing my system to hang?

  I am having some troubles using various external hard drives and my printer, all of which I connect using USB. The majority of the time, when I connect either of these devices, my system freezes up completely after about 10 minutes. They work just fine prior to that moment. I've also not noticed any problems using a USB mouse. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and have tried using a newer kernel (a 2.6.36 Maverick kernel from the kernel ppa, as opposed to the default 2.6.35 one) to no avail. I'm using a Dell Studio XPS 16 (M1647) which is a sort of newish laptop and so my guess is this is probably some kind of driver bug. Is there anyway to debug these sorts of issues? I've looked through some of my logs (/var/log/messages seemed the most useful) but haven't been able to find any kind of USB related logging nor anything interesting happening prior to the hang.

• All tweak settings not saving?

  I am running Ubuntu GNOME 14.04. After the last 2 updates, all settings in the Tweak menu are no saving. It will also not switch to the Gnome Dark theme at all. This includes all Startup Application changes as well as any changes to Extension settings. I'm not sure if I need to include any sort of log records or anything like that, so if you need any more information please ask. I've noticed the default fonts seem to be different. I don't remember that being part of the theme settings. It's almost like I'm running in Safe Mode.

• Partitions and cdrom are not automounted

  Provide my spec and sorry for my poor English first. MB: Gigabyte G31M-S2L (bios ver. F9) CPU: intel E5200 2G RAM HD1: WD 160G with 2 partitions (partition 1:60G, NTFS, win xp; partition 2:100G, NTFS) HD2: WD 320G with 2 partitions (partition 3:220G, NTFS; partition 4:100G, ext4, Ubuntu) Recently, I tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 Beta 2 on my desktop PC (on partition 4). At the beginning, everything looked great including the auto-mounting of partitions 1~3 and the unity (3D). However, after I deleted and re-allocated the partitions on HD2 and re-installed Ubuntu on partition 4, the partitions 1~3 are no longer auto-mounted when I logged in the desktop (and even the inserted cdrom would not be mounted either). The configurations during these two installations are all the same as default. Are there any possible reasons or solutions for this issue?

• access to site owner not working

  I made a website it works for everyone except for the site owner, who cannot access the site. He gets a server could not be found error. I went to his house and the issue occurs for all of his devices (PC, laptop, iPhone using WiFi) when I turn WiFi off the iPhone it works. So I thought it was a problem on his router so I reset is router to default factory settings but it still does not work, I have flushed his DNS cache and his browser cache. But nothing seems to help. He cannot even PING the server using the domain name. However when he uses the IP address he can see the site fine. I looked in cpanel for an blocked IP addresses but cannot see anything. What could be stopping just him from accessing the site via domainname and not the IP address? Site details are: PHP, osCommerce it is hosted by site5 on my reseller account.

• Unstable wireless connection on Ubuntu only (router config problem?)

  so I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 and I could connect to all Wi-Fi's that I've tried and it worked fine... Except for this router that I have at home. This connection seems to be unstable, it just randomly disconnects and reconnects. On the same machine I have Ubuntu 13.10 (same problem) and Windows 8 (no problem). Also there are no Wi-Fi problems when I connect with my Android phone. So I figured it must be some config issue. I tried tweaking some settings/restoring default on the router but I don't really know what I'm doing so, unsurprisingly, it didn't fix the problem.

• unable to display index.php

  I'm trying to load a website I've development and transferred from windows to ubuntu. I've installed apache2/php5/mysql and I've confirmed that it works by using the default index.html file displaying something like "It Works!". I've also created arbitrary folder containing some php file that I've run in firefox and it was displayed. But when I try to run my projects index.php I get a blank screen. I've consulted mirc about this and they say that it has to do with file permission. I've chcked the file permission on my index.php file and it is owner : rw r , group : r, others : read-only and execute is unchecked. What am I doing wrong?

• Files showing in smbclient but not smbmount

  I have a samba folder that I try and access through smbclient, and I can browse it just fine. However, mounting it through smbmount, all the folders under the share are empty. I can list the folders directly under the share fine, but they all appear empty. smbclient: # smbclient //server/share -U username -W workgroup password smbmount # sudo smbmount //server/share mntpoint -o user=username,workgroup=workgroup,password=password I have also tried with domain=workgroup instead of workgroup, both give the same result. No error messages, everything mounts fine, but all the folders under mntpoint are empty, despite the same folders being non-empty when using smbclient. Are these using different libraries? How can I debug the error? Additionally, if I try to mount //server/share/folder, doing an ls results in a segmentation fault. Using dmesg I find: kernel BUG at /build/buildd/linux-2.6.28/fs/cifs/cifs_dfs_ref.c:315! • Find which files an apache process is writing to?

  We have this apache process which becomes io-bound time to time. Using atop, we can see it is a write operation. Using lsof -p <PID> we can see a list of files open by the httpd process. First we thought "log" files must be the problem. So we turned them off just to test. However write operations still continues. We will continue testing a few other things. For instance we use php session variables a lot. Maybe php session files are getting all the writing. But is there a way to quickly identify files which get written to by the httpd process? This way we can focus our efforts on those files. UPDATE: We used the strace command as suggested. Here are two lines from the output. write(23, "\27\0\0\0\3SET CHARACTER SET utf8", 27) = 27 write(23, "\17\0\0\0\3SET NAMES utf8", 19) = 19 We do not have a mysql process on this server. So is strace also showing what is being written to an ethernet port? UPDATE2: During high io load, the process which consumes most of the write resources gives the following output to strace -e trace=write -p <PID>: --- SIGCHLD (Child exited) @ 0 (0) --- write(9, "!", 1) = 1 write(19, "OPTIONS * HTTP/1.0\r\nUser-Agent: Apache (internal dummy connection)\r\n\r\n", 70) = 70 However I cannot figure out where these are being written to.

• what are these weird IP address connections in resource monitor?

  I decided to check out Resource Monitor (on the 'Performance' tab in Task Manager, Windows 7) and I noticed in the "Network" section that the 'System' image name kept making a bunch (~5 at a time) of connections to random IP addresses, it would show anywhere from 1-500 bytes/sec 'sent'. They would stay connected for 1-2 minutes. -All web browsers are closed So, first thing I did was run a trace from network-tools.com on some of these IP addresses. 8/10 were outside of US and did not resolve to any host name. Of the 10 IP addresses I traced, 2 were in US, 4 showed origins in China, and one each to Algeria, Russia, Pakistan, Korea. (!) So, the next thing I did was turn off my wireless card, watch the connections disappear, then turn the card back on, and within 30 seconds more random connections were created by System, with different IP addresses from the first time. The next thing I did was go open Task Manager, Show Processes From All Users, then I killed just about everything that wasn't (what appeared to be) a windows process. Turned on wi-fi, and again within 30 seconds, random IP addresses connect for ~ 1 min at a time, new ones coming and going. I occasionally use bit torrent on this machine, but there was definitely no process that seemed related to bt running after I went through task manager, and bt wasn't open to begin with. So, any ideas on what these connections might be for? I have been using Ad-Aware Free and AVG Free on this computer for a while now, always up to date..

• Ugly LibreOffice font

  I have been experiencing this super annoying bug with fonts in LibreOffice. Please see below screenshot. The spaces between letters are just messed, no matter what font or level of zoom I choose. When I change the zoom level, the spacing is actually changing but still looks very ugly. I have a pretty much default instalation of Ubuntu. I installed a couple of fonts (droid, mscorefonts). I did not change any font settings. Fonts in other applications looks great. When I open the very same text in Google Docs or MS Web Word, it looks perfect. I would appreciate any help concerning this issue. Thanks!

• Safe to remove Python2.6 files?

  I'm using Linux Mint 11 (will upgrade soon), and I've noticed that, even though I don't have any python2.6 packages installed with apt, there's a bunch of residual python2.6 files scattered around my drive, including, but not limited to, dist-packages in /usr/lib/python2.6 and various /usr/share stuff. Is there any way to test if these files are still being used? I'm tempted to sudo rm -rf the lot of them, but I'm scared it'll break stuff. Also, does anyone have any idea where these files could have come from? I believe I had python2.6 installed once upon a time, but I made sure to --purge them, so there shouldn't be any trace of them left, right? EDIT: after using a quick script to check all of the files, it appears most of them belong to important packages, so I won't try weeding out the few which I know are probably useless. Although I am curious why so many packages have python2.6 files when I don't even have it installed. • What command are my volume keys running?

  In Unity I use my ThinkPad hot keys to change the volume. I need to know the command that these keys run so that I can bind it in my window manager. I have tried using amixer but could not change the volume through command line amixer set Master 10%- amixer: Unable to find simple control 'Master',0 amixer scontrols: Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0 amixer set 'IEC958' 50%- amixer: Invalid command! So obviously this is not what Unity is running. I have tried changing the default sound card as well but that didn't help.

• If I were in a Silverlight focus group, here is ten things I would say.

  Silverlight is a great product right off the shelf. I use it, love it and spend a lot of time helping the community understand it. This however, doesn’t mean that I don’t think that it can get better. If I were invited to a Microsoft Focus Group about Silverlight here is 10 things I would say:  We need more navigation templates. I’ve found (4) templates that Microsoft has released (Cosmo, Windows 7, Accent and JetPack). This number needs to be around 16. In order to get more people developing for Silverlight, we need to give them a variety of templates to get them off the ground quickly. Silverlight needs to ship with the next version of Windows. At least version 4 needs to be pre-installed on Windows going forward. It’s small, in its own sandbox and I cannot find a reason for it not to be included. Silverlight needs to run on more platforms.  iOS and Android are the key here. I think Microsoft should shoot for Android first since I believe Android will take the lead in the mobile market (at least for the short-term). It would also be great to see Microsoft use Silverlight as the focus on their new tablets / “AppleTV”. I would even invest in getting it working with Kinect. When creating a new project in Silverlight, we should have the option to create a Unit Test. Most Silverlight developers are not unit testing. If this is surprising to you then you need to get out and talk to more developers. I partially blame this on Microsoft. When you create a new ASP.NET MVC application, you simply put a check to create a Unit Test project. We need the same thing for Silverlight. We should steer the developer into the right direction. Design patterns such as MVVM need to be easier to implement in Silverlight solutions.  I’d go so far as to say that MVVM Light should ship with Visual Studio. With the project / item templates and code snippets, Laurent puts you into the right direction. This is the way that it should have been. Easy for the 9-5 developer to grasp. I believe the majority of developers use code behind because that’s what is in all the demos provided by Microsoft. They are not trying to write sucky code it is that they simply don’t know a better way.  The XAP Files should be obfuscated/unused references deleted by default when in “Release” mode. A better Silverlight experience starts with a smaller XAP file. The less that a user has to download is the better, even with the majority of people on broadband. I would also recommend built-in obfuscation by Microsoft. People are paranoid that they can rename the .zip and run it through reflector. Get rid of the boring install experiences. Here is a great write up on what I’m talking about. The default “Install Silverlight” and “Loading screens” suck. They suck bad. We need a choice of templates that a professional designer has created.  Silverlight needs to supports more image formats. For example: it would be great to use .gif’s without converting them to .png.    Switching between Blend 4 and VS2010 to develop a Silverlight application is a pain. Probably one of the biggest issues that I can’t think of a good solution for. It would be nice if VS2012 had the best of both worlds and you never have to leave VS. We need reporting controls with SSRS included with the Silverlight Toolkit. I can’t think of another control that we need built into the toolkit. It would also be helpful to have export to .xls, .pdf and .doc included with the control. I hope that this post will at least get a few people talking. • Keyboard Shortcuts no longer working on Ubuntu 12.04 with GNOME 3.4.1 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the keyboard shortcut to minimise a window to launcher in unity? I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 (with Gnome 3.2 I think), to Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.1, and my custom shortcuts have stopped working. Opening up the All Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts, I can see that my shortcuts are still there. All of the shortcuts that I didn't change are working, and my shortcuts in the custom section are working (eg Ctrl+Alt+G to open gedit), its just that the shortcuts I had customised before the upgrade no longer work. Under Launchers, I had changed "Launch Terminal" to Ctrl+Alt+T, and under Navigation I had changed move to workspace above/below to Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down. Investigating further, it looks like the default shortcuts for these actions work (Ctrl+Alt+Up/ Down moves me up and down workpaces), so I'm guessing that there is some discrepancy between what I am seeing on the Keyboard Settings and what my computer is reading from. Any help would be appreciated.

• Server asks for username and password on boot

  I installed the Ubuntu server 12.04 easily, however, when I boot it asks for a username and password. I don't know my previous username or password from Windows XP. I am currently trying to install any version of Ubuntu I have in my arsenal to recover the PC, but all intents so far have failed. They worked on other computers but not on this one, the error I get is No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! I have tried all the solutions found on this site but to no avail. I don't have a Windows Ultimate boot disk and I'm out of CDs to burn. I can, however, make live USBs. Any Suggestions?

• How to configure screens in console or create screen configuration profiles?

  I have two monitors and integrated GPU (Intel® HD Graphics 4600). It works fine for work or movies, but if I launch games in fullscreen mode - I get artifacts, glitches and so on. Temporary disabling second monitor solve this problem, but then I have to enable it back, and set its properties manually (by default, additional screen attaches its left-top corner to main monitor's right-top corner, but I need it to be left-bottom and right-bottom corners). So I need some kind of automatization here. Best option - tool to create and swap between some kind of config profiles. Or, maybe, some console manipulations which I can put into script files would be fine too. (Ubuntu 13.04, if it matters)
