• How can I increase resolution when impossible to set up nvidia driver?

  I was stuck at 1024x758 before creating an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as follows which works well to allow me to have a resolution of 1920x1200 with the vesa driver. • Can I make Launcher icons dark/dim unless app is running (then in color)?

  To improve visibility of what Launcher-Applications I have running (instead of relying solely on that small right-facing triangle), is it possible to make Launcher-icons default to a black&white/dark/dim state? And then when a launcher-icon is clicked (or the super+# shortcut used) that icon would gain color and backlight signifying the app is running? If the Launcher icon's app is not running, it is dimmed out. If the icon's app is running, it is showing in color and backlit. I'd prefer an "inhouse" solution as opposed to having to install additional software, but I'm interested in hearing all options for if this is possible.

• System doesn't show option to select operating system during startup!

  i am new at linux and ubuntu, today i installed ubuntu 12.04 but during installation some problem happened, i don't remember what was that exactly (but can tell you that it was related to boot), so i reinstalled ubuntu (using usb stick both time) and ubuntu installation finished successfully, Now problem is that when I start my computer then system is directly selecting ubuntu as my operating system, i have installed it along with windows 7 in option during installation, so it should give me option to select which operating system i want to use. I don't know what may be the problem. Also, I want to know where ubuntu is installed (which directory)? i just selected default setting during installation as i am noob in these things.

• Why do I get this error trying to compile libxml2?

  Although, I installed libxml2 once and reinstalled it for a few times. I cannot compile c-source code because compiler cannot find where the header file is. I am able to locate where it is (in the folder where I downloaded the tar.gz package) but I had a feeling in my guts that this package isn't installed correctly because when I tried to sudo make install, it says /bin/bash: /home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz: No such file or directory make[2]: *** [install-libLTLIBRARIES] Error 127 make[2]: Leaving directory `/home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz packages/libxml2-2.8.0' make[1]: *** [install-am] Error 2 make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/bfaskiplar/Downloads/tar.gz packages/libxml2-2.8.0' make: *** [install-recursive] Error 1 that's why I installed synaptic package manager and reinstalled it, but in this case, isn't it supposed to put header files in default directory where gcc normally searches in currently, I am able to compile it with -I option, but I wonder why do I have to copy headers manually even if I used synaptic for installation and why I am getting Error 1 and Error 2 when trying to install the package manually. thanks in advance

• Acer AO722 flickering screen

  The screen on my Acer Aspire One netbook (AO722) flickers for a few minutes when Ubuntu awakens the screen after a period of inactivity. I am pretty sure this is not a hardware issue, as I never see this problem in Windows and both of my Acer netbooks exhibit the same problem. I see the flickering in all recent versions of Ubuntu -- 11.10, 11.04, and 10.10. Surprisingly I haven't been able to find a lot of information about this problem online. I believe the video card in this netbook is Radeon 6290 paired with AMD C-60. I am using the default open source video driver. Would appreciate any tips on how to get rid of the flicker. Thanks!

• Dual boot to windows 7

  i just installed ubuntu 12.10 alongside windows 7 but now my computer automatically boots to ubuntu. i want windows 7 as my default operating system. when i start up my laptop it shows me no settings or any screen asking me what operating system to use. the ONLY way for me to boot into windows 7 not is to hit f12 at startup to bring up which to boot from, select my hard drive then bring up the grub loader in ubuntu, then select windows 7 loader. when i go into msconfig in windows 7 ONLY windows 7 is listed under the operating systems... i see no ubuntu at all. please help this is really annoying!   Recently I had to create couple SQL Server Reports (SSRS) with optional parameters built in. It took me a while to refresh memory how this can be done. It was very simple to create reports and processes behind, but connecting these two were are little bit challenging – stored procedure was tested and worked fine, but when the report was passing optional parameters it didn’t returned expected results. After tweaking SQL stored procedures and reports parameter options, the following approach turn to be the winning one. 1) Defining report parameters: From Menu bar select ‘View’ and ‘Report Data’ Newly open window should have ‘Parameters’ folder display Right click on this folder and select ‘Add new parameter...’                             Default values need to be added from a query                 A query values need to include ‘’ (empty string) – as highlighted                   2) SQL stored procedure should have CASE statements inside WHERE and it was the only way that a report was getting correct results back.

  We are planning to develop a game for Samsung Smart TVs. Although those TVs support Flash and HTML5 other specs fail at supporting a game engine. For ex: Using an engine that needs GPU is not possible with the default Samsung smart tv set. Or... WebGL is supported with Samsung SDK 4.1 but we don't know if SDK 4.1 is available for Smart TV series between 7000-9000 or not. We have tried to communicate with Samsung but they don't really seem to respond. Is there anyone who has developed a game for Samsung Smart TVs? If there is, can you name the game engines that can work with those TVs?

I am aware of general patent infringement issues and the freetype-freeworld libs, but never managed to enable RGB subpixel rendering for Mono in Fedora - it keeps using greyscale.   I've been granted admin access to an internal IIS server on which I need to set up a web site. Before doing anything technical I wanted to ensure that I could access the server, but when attempting to access a simple page (that does not refer to Sharepoint) at http://localhost/index.html when logged onto the server directly, I am getting Parser Error Description: An error occurred during the parsing of a resource required to service this request.   I have been using Pidgin as an all-in-one IM client, but now as Empathy is the default app in Ubuntu I wanted to try it out. I have a sametime account at an external company that is keen to restrict access to their service from certain sametime client versions only. I was able to trick it with pidgin by specifying the following settings in accounts.xml: <setting name='client_minor' type='int'>8510</setting> <setting name='client_major' type='int'>30</setting> <setting name='client_id_val' type='int'>4876</setting> I tried to do the same in Empathy but I failed. As far as I know, Pidgin and Empathy use the same connector Plugin for sametime, so basically the functions should be there somewhere but there is little information about the configuration files and that doesn't discuss any sametime specific options.

• WUBI Install freezes on startup

  Ok, I don't completely know of all the specifications, but installing Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my cousin's old Windows XP computer, an old Compaq from around 2004. After install via Wubi, and going through several unsuccessful install attempts, I finally get the start up screen of Ubuntu, and it freezes once you get to the pretty default wallpaper. Not even a login screen. Just instant freeze! We've left it on for about a day now and its still frozen, any help? (Please reply ASAP, he wont stop bugging me about it)

  When i install ubuntu, and the computer restarts it doesn't show the boot managaer so it always boots in windows 7. I tried to change the default os, and ubuntu wasn't even listed in it. Then I read a how to on it, it showed how to size the partions and make them correctly, but it still didn't work. I tried easyBCD and still no success. I've tried installing it about 4-5 times and i still can't get it. What can i do to fix it?

  I have been wrestling with prompts about my default key ring for months, finally made contact with Ubuntu with the right password, and find that when I try to sync evolution Ubuntu directs me to "system-preferences- " and then the road forks between the "passwords and encryption" you indicate and the "encryption and keyrings. I have no idea which version I am using, at this point. The road goes downhill from there. I would really like to synch my windows manager and Inkscape vs. ImageMagick display (circles display as semicircles). Can someone set me straight?

  I have some specific usage questions about DNSCrypt-Proxy. I followed a guide and ended with the command dnscrypt-proxy --daemonize –user=dnscrypt Without any further switches does it default to using OpenDNS's resolver server? I want to use specific servers, I found reference to pointing it to the full path of a CSV file. What is the CSV format for use with DNSCrypt? Would it be "address:port,public key"? Does it go in order of working addresses? For example, first resolver doesn't connect it moves on to the second line of the CSV, then third etc. Lastly, would this question be more appropriate in another StackExchange section?

• cannot install ubuntu 12.04 using wubi

  I recently installed windows 7 on my pc and I have been unsuccessfully trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on it. I used to have dual boot system before both with windows and linux. I changed my hard drive from ide to ahci (default option) burned the ubuntu cd properly (not the .iso file) using the ubuntu 12.04 distribution I downloaded from the official site, set boot priority to cd/dvd but.. Nothing. It tries to boot from the cd, doesn't manage and turn to boot from the hard drive. I also tried wubi. I opened it through windows, got the window that asks me to choose "demo and installation" or "more on ubuntu" (something like that), I choose the first option, reboot manually my computer and it keeps returning on windows mode and doesn't boot from the cd. What can I do? Thanks!

  I am attempting to design a component-based architecture that allows Components to be dynamically enabled and disabled, much like the system employed by Unity3D. For example, all Components are implicitly enabled by default; however, if one desires to halt execution of code for a particular Component, one can disable it. Naively, I want to have a boolean flag in Component (which is an abstract class), and somehow serialize all method calls into strings, so that some sort of ComponentManager can check if a given Component is enabled/disabled before processing a method call on it. However, this is a pretty bad solution. I feel like I should employ some variation of the state paradigm, but I have yet to make progress. Any help would be greatly appreciated,

• Dual 7950, freezes during startup

  I have two identical video cards right now. Xubuntu will boot up no problem if I only have one card installed. If I install the 2nd card it will just hang midway thru the loading screen. Regardless of which card I use and which position on the motherboard, it will freeze if I have both installed. I've tried installing the proprietary drivers, both fglrx and fglrx-updates, still freezes in the same spot. Uninstalled those and went back to the default ones. The only way I can get a terminal is by booting into failsafe mode. Booting using 13.10 i386 on a USB stick gives me some errors related to what I think is the 2nd video card: [drm:r600_ring_test] ERROR radeon: ring 1 test failed (scratch(0x850C)=0xCAFEDEAD) [drm:r600_dma_ring_test] ERROR radeon: ring 3 test failed (0x02FFFF6B) radeon 0000:0200.2 disabling GPU acceleration"
