• Are browsers permitted to render <ol>s in any order?

  As I understand the XML spec, the significance of the order of child elements is not guaranteed. XML parsers tend to keep child elements in the same order as they occur in the XML document, but they are under no obligation to do so. If that's so, then are browsers free to render the <li>s in an <ol> in a different order than they occur in the XHTML? Or is it specified in the XHTML spec somewhere that order has to be preserved? I realise that all major browsers will respect the order of my <li>s. I'm just interested in the academic question of whether or not they are technically obliged to.

• Android HTTP get methods

  I have written a number of applications for blackberry and am just starting in Android. It seems to me that android has a lot more built in functions. I am starting by recreating some of my BB apps on Android and on one I take a few xml sites and parse them out. On blackberry I implemented this by creating a class that extended a thread. I would construct a new instance of this class with the parameters of my http request and it would call a function back in my main class, sending it the results. I am tempted to reuse my code, but am curious if android has something better built in. I have been looking at the handler class as well as possible using a service. Bascially, I would like to start a new thread that will return a document of a specific url. Thanks!

  I have a simple non-clickable link within a div that looks like this: It's meant to be a sharable link that the user can copy paste into other things. • Firefox running infinitely even after condition met in jquery function

  The following function is called with setTimeout(function () { get_progress(fileID,fileName)},8000); upon a form submit. The purpose of the function is to get read_file.php to read a txt file that stores the file upload status from a form (in percentage). Upon reaching 80%, my Firefox seems to run infinitely even when HEAD returns an error. • jquery - turning "autocomplete" to off for all forms (even ones not loaded yet)

  So, I've got this code: $(document).ready(function(){ $('form').attr('autocomplete', 'off'); }); It works great for all forms already existing. The problem is, some forms of mine are in pop ups loaded throught ajax. This won't apply to them since they're "loaded" later. I know there's a live() function - but that's only for attaching events. What's a good way to apply this to all forms? Thanks.

• Alert Box Running First?

  I have some jQuery/JS below. If I run this the alert will show, and then the first animate will happen in the background but not be shown. It will just appear at the final size. Shouldn't the alert run at the end of all the animation? Can anyone explain why this is happening?

  I am current in planning on creating a big database (2+ million rows) with a variety of data from separate sources. I would like to avoid structuring the database around auto_increment ids to help prevent against sync issues with replication, and also because each item inserted will have a alphanumeric product code that is guaranteed to be unique - it seems to me more sense to use that instead. I am looking at a search engine to index this database with Sphinx looking rather appealing due to its design around indexing relational databases. However, looking at various tutorials and documentation seems to show database designs being dependent on an auto_increment field in one form or another and a rather bold statement in the documentation saying that document ids must be 32/64bit integers only or things break. Is there a way to have a database indexed by Sphinx without auto_increment fields as the id?

• Javascript is freezing the browser when running this code

  I am trying to get the value of a text input and check if there is any links in it and then take those links and make them into tags. But when I run this code, something is going wrong and it completely freezes the page. Basically, I want it to check for "http://" and if that exists, to keep on adding to the substr length until the end of the string/link.   I want to add an event handler to some dynamically added elements. I simplified my problem into the basic code below. I am using the new JQuery 1.7 on feature to say "hey for all labels in the CancelSurvey id element call this notify function when they are clicked." function notify(event) { console.log(event.data.name); } $('#CancelSurvey').on('click', 'label', { name: $(this).attr("id") }, notify); I want to pass the id of the label as parameter "name". When I try to alert this it is undefined (they are defined in the html created). I believe that using the $(this) is not referencing the label selector in this case. It actually seems to be referencing the document itself. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?

  Hi, I'm attempting to run unit tests for a static library that attempts to create/write/read a file in the document directory. Since this is a static library and not an application for the iOS, attempts to reference the NSDocumentDirectory is returning me directory for the form "/Users//Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/Documents" This directory does not exist. When attempting to access a directory from an actual application, the NSDocumentDirectory returns something of the form: "/Users//Library/Application Support/iPhone Simulator/4.2/FEDBEF5F-1326-4383-A087-CDA1B865E61A/Documents" (Please note the simulator version as well as application ID as part of the path) How can I overcome this shortcoming in the unit test framework for static libraries that implement tests that require iOS app specific calls?   Assume you have a list item, <li id="foo"> which you want to fade from one color to another when moused over, and that you are using jQuery. This is fairly easy: $('li#foo').bind('mouseenter' , function(e) { $(this).animate({backgroundColor: '#F00'} , 300); }); However, what if you wanted to get the resulting color or other style rules from a class defined in CSS without also declaring them in JavaScript? It seems there's no way to learn style information from CSS rules without having an example of the rule already in the document, which would require you to animate the <li> to the target appearance, then in the animation-finished callback, set the class which leads to redundant style declarations and can foul up your CSS at "runtime". Sorry if this question's unclear: It doesn't occur in the context of any specific project, I'm just curious how you'd go about this. Also, I know CSS3 hypothetically includes support for such transitions but using CSS for dynamic behavior like this seems such an ugly hack.

  Recently when I was working with JavaScript "sort()" function, I found in one of the tutorials that this function does not sort the numbers properly. Instead to sort numbers, a function must be added that compares numbers, like the following code:- <script type="text/javascript"> function sortNumber(a,b) { return a - b; } var n = ["10", "5", "40", "25", "100", "1"]; document.write(n.sort(sortNumber)); </script> The output then comes as:- 1,5,10,25,40,100 Now what I didn't understand is that why is this occurring & can anybody please tell in details as to what type of algorithm is being used in this "sort()" function? This is because for any other language, I didn't find this problem where the function didn't sort the numbers correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Does specifying image size in CSS allow the browser to do layout before download is complete?

  I've always tried to specify the height and width attributes for img tags in HTML. Not for style reasons, but because the browser then expects the size of the image and can do page layout even before the image has finished downloading. From the HTML spec: The height and width attributes give user agents an idea of the size of an image or object so that they may reserve space for it and continue rendering the document while waiting for the image data. I don't know why this has never occurred to me, but does specifying height and width in CSS, rather than inside the img tag, do the same thing?

  I am trying to control HTML5 videos using JQuery. I have two clips in a tabbed interface, there are six tabs in total, the others just have images. I am trying to make the video clips play when their tab is clicked and then stop when any of the others are clicked. This must be a simple thing to do but I cant seem to get it to work, the code I am using to play the video is: $('#playMovie1').click(function(){ $('#movie1').play(); }); I have read that the video element needs to be exposed in a function to be able to control it but can't find an example. I am able to make it work using JS: document.getElementById('movie1').play(); Any advice would be great. Thanks
