• Servlet 3 spec and ThreadLocal

  As far as I know, Servlet 3 spec introduces asynchronous processing feature. Among other things, this will mean that the same thread can and will be reused for processing another, concurrent, HTTP request(s). This isn't revolutionary, at least for people who worked with NIO before. Anyway, this leads to another important thing: no ThreadLocal variables as a temporary storage for the request data. Because if the same thread suddenly becomes the carrier thread to a different HTTP request, request-local data will be exposed to another request. All of that is my pure speculation based on reading articles, I haven't got time to play with any Servlet 3 implementations (Tomcat 7, GlassFish 3.0.X, etc.). So, the questions: Am I correct to assume that ThreadLocal will cease to be a convenient hack to keep the request data? Has anybody played with any of Servlet 3 implementations and tried using ThreadLocals to prove the above? Apart from storing data inside HTTP Session, are there any other similar easy-to-reach hacks you could possibly advise?

  Hi, I'm trying to create a form that sends the customer's name and email address to icontact (an email list application). All the values are correct for icontact and if I submit the form as usual, icontact responds that it added the email address. The success message loads in a new page from icontact's website. What I'd like to accomplish is that ajax would send the form and returns a success message within the current page, without sending the customer to a new page. • jquery attribute indexOf

  When I am getting at an attribute onclick of custom(Reporting Services) checkbox it gives me correct result. However when I am trying to use indexOf on that result it says "Object doesn't support this property or method", i.e. this is fine, gives me a long string $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { alert( $(this).attr("onclick") ); }); But this gives an error(object doesn't support this property or method): $('input[id*=CustomCheckBox]').click(function() { if ($(this).attr("onclick").indexOf("SomeString") > -1 ) { //do some processing here } } What would I need to modify so that indexOf is working properly?

• Map generics in Java

  Hi all, I seem to have a bit of misunderstanding with Java Generics and I hope you can help me. I tried to create a map like so: Map<Debater, int> (Debater is an Interface I declared) but java complained about the int, so I did: Map<Debater, Integer> I suppose it's because int is not a class while Integer is, is this correct? Also, Now I get a Debater and I need to add 1 to its value in the map. How do I do that?

• Codesample with bufferoverflow (gets method). Why does it not behave as expected?

  This an extract from an c program that should demonstrate a bufferoverflow. void foo() { char arr[8]; printf(" enter bla bla bla"); gets(arr); printf(" you entered %s\n", arr); } The question was "How many input chars can a user maximal enter without a creating a buffer overflow" My initial answer was 8, because the char-array is 8 bytes long. Although I was pretty certain my answer was correct, I tried a higher amount of chars, and found that the limit of chars that I can enter, before I get a segmentation fault is 11. (Im running this on A VirtualBox Ubuntu) So my question is: Why is it possible to enter 11 chars into that 8 byte array?

• Ruby on Rails- :symbols, @iVars and "strings" - oh my!

  New to Rails and trying to get my head around when/why to use :symbols, @ivars , "strings" within the framework. I think I understand the differences between them conceptually only one :symbol instance per project one @ivar per instance multiple "strings" - as they are created whenever referenced (?) Feel free to correct me! The main confusion comes from understanding the rules & conventions of what Rails expects - where and WHY? I'm sure there's an "Ah ha!" moment coming but I haven't had it yet...as it seems pretty arbitrary to me (coming from C/Obj-C). -thx

• Setting many key/value pairs

  Hi, I'm working on a rake task which imports from a JSON feed into an ActiveRecord called Person. Person has quite a few attributes and rather than write lines of code for setting each attribute I'm trying different methods. The closest I've got is shown below. This works nicely as far as outputing to screen but when I check the values have actually been set on the ActiveRecord itself it's always nil. So it looks like I can't use .to_sym to solve my problem? Any suggestions? I should also mention that I'm just starting out with Ruby, have been doing quite a bit of Objective-c and now need to embrace the Interwebs :) http = Net::HTTP.new(url.host, url.port) http.read_timeout = 30 json = http.get(url.to_s).body parsed = JSON.parse(json) if parsed.has_key? • COUNT issue across multiple tables

  I am trying to count across 2 tables and I dont see whats wrong with my query yet I get a wrong result. User 2 does not exist in table_two, so the zero is correct. SELECT t1.creator_user_id, COUNT(t1.creator_user_id), COUNT(t2.user_id) FROM table_one AS t1 LEFT JOIN table_two AS t2 ON t2.user_id = t1.creator_user_id GROUP BY t1.creator_user_id, t2.user_id Actual result 1 192 192 2 9 0 Expected result 1 16 12 2 9 0 The result indicate a missing group by condition, but I already got both fields used. Where am I wrong ? Also, can I sum up all users that doesnt exist in table_two for t1 ? Like user 3 exists 21 times in t1, then the results would be: 1 16 12 (users with > 0 in t2 will need their own row) 2 30 0 (user 2=9 + user 3=21 => 30) Its okay for the user Id to be wrong for sum of t1 for all users with 0 in t2. If not possible, then I'll just do two queries.

  Well I googled my question but I couldn't find anything or I it's not the correct question.. The issue is I need modify the primary_key name of the database :id with :another_id, in my project I need to use pgrouting and it contains several plsql functions and these functions uses the primary-key with the name gid and instead of modify the plsql functions is better change the id name, and I was thinking do this with a migration becouse I thought it's the rails way. Is it possible, and how I can do this ?? Thanks in advance and sorry for my english.

So then is my conclusion correct, that this inability to provide a reference to an object value, as an object key in a string literal; is this strictly an interpreter/parsing issue?   I have two samples of code. One works and returns the correct result, one throws a null reference exception. What's the difference? • Autofiltered List; cross-row formula

  I have a large Autofiltered list (~600 rows), with some of the rows being summary rows that I want to use a UDF to display the lowest priority listed in any of the 'child' cells. I can pass to my formula the right cells, but they are no longer correct if the list is re-ordered in any way. Is there a way to give the formula the right cell and have it recognise that I want that row and only ever that row? I can do it with a VLOOKUP to look at a hidden column that lists wether the 'child' row matches the right criteria, but with 600 rows and each parent row requiring about a dozen 'child' cells each, it's too slow.

• Eager loading in EF1.0

  I have a many-to-many relationship: Application - Applications_Servers - Server This is set up in my Entity Data Model and all is well. My problem is that I'd like to eager-load the whole graph of Applications so that I have an IEnumerable<Applications>, each Application member populated with the Servers collection associated by the many-to-many relationship. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but according to my research there must be a navigation property between Application and Server. This is not the case for me because my Applications_Servers join table has more in it than just the two keys. Therefore, there is no navigation property directly between Application and Server, and this doesn't work: var apps = (from a in context.Application.Include("Server") select a).ToList(); I get an error saying there is no navigation property on Application called "Server", and that's correct, there is none. How do I write the query to eager-load my Applications with their Servers in this case?

It seems that I get weird results when I run my program. But if I declare the float foo[10] to be const and initialize it in the declaration, I get correct results. Why is this happening?

• How do I get the username in Java (ie, who -m in Java) (or Jython 2.1)

  Here's the situation. I have a jython 2.1 script in a shared account that needs to know who is calling it. In bash, I can simply use 'who -m' and it will give me the correct username. I haven't been able to find anything in java (or jython) that would give me a similar result. Even trying to call Runtime.getRuntime().exec("who -m") doesn't do anything. When I try to read the InputStream from the process returned by exec, the stream is empty.

The script is iterating through a list trying to calc a running total of the values of all objects in the list. Some or all of these objects' values may be null. • Unit testing with serialization mock objects in C++

  Greetings, I'm fairly new to TDD and ran across a unit test that I'm not entirely sure how to address. Basically, I'm testing a couple of legacy class methods which read/write a binary stream to a file. The class functions take a serializable object as a parameter, which handles the actual reading/writing to the file. For testing this, I was thinking that I would need a serialization mock object that I would pass to this function. My initial thought was to have the mock object hold onto a (char*) which would dynamically allocate memory and memcpy the data. However, it seems like the mock object might be doing too much work, and might be beyond the scope of this particular test. Is my initial approach correct, or can anyone think of another way of correctly testing this? Thanks!

• Why does my OpenGL ES iPhone game flicker when I first turn on the phone?

  I made a simple game for the iPhone using OpenGL ES. Everything works fine except for this problem: I turn the phone completely off, then back on, then launch my app and I get this wierd flickering! Every other frame is correct... the incorrect frames are just the same frame over and over again. If I quit the app, launch it again everything is fine. If I quit and restart 10 times in a row everything is fine every time. But if I turn the phone off, then back on, then launch the app I get the same flickering the first time I launch the app. Why is this happening?! Has anyone else had this problem? Cheers!

  Hello html body .home blog logged-in div #wrapper div #page div .cats I have a problem with selecting unordered lists (i.e ul li.class-name class-name-number) at the above dom location in CSS. I am working with a wordpress theme. Basically could I have suggestions for the correct selector to use in order to influence this tag? I can provide a simplified html structure if it will help. I've tried a number of selectors along the lines of: (sometimes)#page (# or .)cats (sometimes)ul li(sometimes with class name) EDIT: I've tried the selectors suggested in the wordpress docs. Thanks!

  I'm using the qTip jQuery plugin to create dynamic tool tips. The tooltip sends an id to a cfc which runs a query and returns data in JSON format.   My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?
