• Show friendly message on ASP.NET Ajax error

  You all know how annoying is this: I do have a log system and the correct error is well explicit there, but I want to give a better message to the user. I keep trying several ways but I'm using Telerik components and well jQuery and I ended up using both ASP.NET Ajax methods and jQuery, so I use function pageLoad() { try { var manager = Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance(); manager.add_endRequest(endRequest); manager.add_beginRequest(OnBeginRequest); manager } catch (err) { alert(err); } } as well $(document).ready(function() { ... } that alert(err) is never fired even upon OnClick events what's the best approach to avoid this message errors and provide a cleaner way? all this happens in <asp:UpdatePanel> as I use that when I didn't know better (3 years ago!) and I really don't want to mess up and build all again from scratch :( Any help is greatly appreciated Updated with more error windows after volpav solution

I got a simple input text field in a HTML web page, and I have done some Javascript to capture the string and check if there are any strange characters other than numbers and characters in the string. But I am not sure if it is correct.   Hello, I'm trying to make sense on the best way to do automatize a series of things in a row in order to deploy a web-app and haven't yet came up with a suitable solution. I would like to: use google's compiler.jar to minify my JS use yahoo's yui-compressor.jar to minify my CSS access a file and change a string so that header files like "global.css?v=21" get served the correct version deploy the app (sftp, mercurial or rsync?) omitting certain directories like "/userfiles" Can you guys put me on the right track to solve this? • How to refactor this Ruby on Rails code?

  I want to fetch posts based on their status, so I have this code inside my PostsController index action. It seems to be cluttering the index action, though, and I'm not sure it belongs here. • Axis xsd:dateTime issue

  Here is the whole thing. I 'm using a webservice, with wsdl2java I generate classes and communicate with another application. Problem is , when I use a method from my generated WS client that is resulting in data that contains some object with data in format xsd:dateTime(Axis 1.4), and that data is represensted by java.util.Calendar object in java has time shifted to GMT(about two hours before my time zone). That results in bad data that I have to substract two hours to display correct value. My question is, considering I didn't work on building that webservice(all I have is wsdl url) where is the problem and can I fix it or the problem is at the side of the webservice creator. If I'm it is not clear what I am asking I will gladly explain as much as I can.

• Bug in Programming Interviews Exposed?

  Hi, I could not find an errata for the 2nd edition of this book. My question concerns the if-statement in the following piece of code. void removeHead (Node ** head) { Node * temp; if (!(*head)) { temp = (*head)->next; delete *head; *head = temp; } } So I understand that the point of the if-statement is to check if the Node is null. However by adding an additional "!" to the evaluation, wouldn't this negate the false value of null? Would it be correct to change it to something like: if (*head) { ... } Also if anyone knows where I can find an official errata for the 2nd edition that would be great. Thanks, Sam

• Google Translate set default language

  Maybe this has an obvious solution that I'm overlooking, but I can't seem to find the correct parameter to put in to make this happen. Using the Google Translate widget on a site, I need to set the default language that the user sees when entering the site, even though the site is english. function googleTranslateElementInit() { new google.translate.TranslateElement({ pageLanguage: 'en' }, 'google_translate_element'); } I've tried adding: defaultLanguage: 'fr' and tried: targetLanguage: 'fr' I did find some nice jQuery solutions, but didn't want to bypass this if it was an easy fix. I have confirmed that the course li on which I am setting the data is the same as the one on which I am looking for it. (Unless I'm messing that up by calling appendTo() on it?)

• [0-9a-zA-Z]* string expressed with primes or prime-factorization-style way to break it into parts?

  Suppose a string consists of numbers and alphabets. You want to break it into parts, an analogy is primes' factorization, but how can you do similar thing with strings [0-9a-zA-Z]* or even with arbitrary strings? I could express it in alphabets and such things with octal values and then prime-factorize it but then I need to keep track of places where I had the non-numbers things. Is there some simple way to do it? I am looking for simple succinct solutions and don't want too much side-effects. [Update] mvds has the correct idea, to change the base, how would you implement it?

  I have implemented a Qcolor dialog box which opens on certain condition. To get the selected color after final selection i use the method selectedColor() which returns the value in QColor . When i print that value , it's like this : <PyQt4.QtGui.QColor object at 0x01DD7880> I want color value in hex value . like this : #DFDFDF (for grey ). If it's not hex , correct me. Is there any function to convert that? Any suggestions welcome .

• Running Python code from Java program, shoudl i be doing this?

  i have a scenario where i draw a network and set all it's paraments on swing based gui, after that i have to translate this network into a python based script which another framework reads and realize this network in the form of virtual machines. As an example have look here: from mininet.topo import Topo, Node class MyTopo( Topo ): def *__init__*( self, enable_all = True ): super( MyTopo, self ).__init__() Host = 1 Switch = 2 self.add_node( Switch, Node( is_switch=True ) ) self.add_node( Host, Node( is_switch=False ) ) self.add_edge( Host, Switch ) self.enable_all() topos = { 'mytopo': ( lambda: MyTopo() ) } It simply connects a host to a switch and realize this topology on mininet framework. Now for now in order to realize the drawn network on java GUI here is what i am doing: I simply take the information from GUI and creates a new python file like the one above using java code and then run this file in mininet, which works fine somehow. I want to know, is this the correct and robust way how i am doing this or should i be looking further into java-python bridge like scenarios to be more effective or so as to say more professional.

For example: index.php - the main plugin file info.php - returns an array with plugin information install.php - self-explanatory can you think of an elegant, short-hand name for a PHP file that contains the code that is to be executed before any HTML is output? • Multiple Table Joins to Improve Performance?

  If I have a table structure like this: Transaction [TransID, ...] Document [DocID, TransID, ...] Signer [SignerID, ...] Signature [SigID, DocID, SignerID, ...] And the business logic is like this: Transactions can have multiple documents Documents can have multiple signatures And the same signer can have multiple signatures in multiple documents within the same transaction So, now to my actual question: If I wanted to find all the documents in a particular transaction, would it be better, performance-wise, if I also stored the TransID and the DocID in the Signer table as well so I have smaller joins. Otherwise, I'd have to join through the Signature Document Transaction Documents to get all the documents in the transaction for that signer. I think it's really messy to have that many relationships in the Signer table though and it doesn't seem "correct" to do it that way (also seems like an update nightmare) but I can see that it might be better performance for direct joins. Thoughts? TIA!

• Printing and exporting from Crystal Reports Viewer throws error

  I'm using the .net Crystal Reports viewer to display a report. This works properly, but when I click on the print option, and then click "OK" on the options popup, I get the following error: Access is denied. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code. Exception Details: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException: Access is denied. And the same thing when I try to export. I'm running this on the Visual Studio development server, VS2008. What can I do to correct this?

• How to make notification to group users with read/unread flag?

  I am making a notification system so that when users in a group perform an action, it will notify all the other users in the group. I want the notification to be marked "read" or "unread" for each user of the group. With that, I can easily retreive any unread notification for a user and display it. I am think about creating a notification table that have the following fields. +----------------------+ | notification | +----------------------+ | id | | userid | | content | | status (read/unread) | | time | +----------------------+ My question is: Whether it is the correct way of making the system? As it means that when there is 1,000 users in a group, then I have to insert 1,000 rows to the table. If not, what is the better way of doing this?   I am setting up the Single Table Inheritance, using ContactEvent as the Model that ContactEmail, ContactLetter, and ContactCall will all inherit. But I'm stumped on how to create the routing and the controller. For example, let's say I want to create a new ContactEvent with type Email. I would like a way to do the following: new_contact_event_path(contact, email) This would take the instance from Contact model and from Email model. Inside, I would imagine the contact_event_controller would need to know... @contact_event.type = (params[:email]) # get the type based on what was passed in? @contact_event.event_id = (params[:email]) #get the id for the correct class, in this case Email.id Just not sure how this works....

• sfConfig::get is not returning constants defined in app.yml

  I have an interesting problem. I am using Symfony 1.3.2. I have defined some constants in project/apps/frontend/config/app.yml and project/config/app.yml When I use the constant (correct spelling) in a piece of code like this $test=sfConfig::get('app_foobar'); the variable $test is assigned a null value. This is what I have checked so far: CHECK: cache files generated? (YES) CHECK: Do the cache files (config_app.yml.php) in the cache directory contain the constants defined in the app.yml file (YES) CHECK: Constant names used in the code matches the array keys found in config_app.yml? (YES) At this stage, I have run out of ideas. I dont want to supply a default value as a hack, because when I need to change the value of the constant, I will have to replace this in potentially hundreds of instances (too error prone). Is there anything that I have missed?. What could be causing this?

• Best indexing strategy for several varchar columns in Postgres

  I have a table with 10 columns that need to be searchable (the table itself has about 20 columns). So the user will enter query criteria for at least one of the columns but possibly all ten. All non-empty criteria is then put into an AND condition Suppose the user provided non-empty criteria for column1 and column4 and column8 the query would be: select * from the_table where column1 like '%column1_query%' and column4 like '%column4_query%' and column8 like '%column8_query%' So my question is: am I better off creating 1 index with 10 columns? 10 indexes with 1 column each? Or do I need to find out what sets of columns are queried together frequently and create indexes for them (an index on cols 1,4 and 8 in the case above). If my understanding is correct a single index of 10 columns would only work effectively if all 10 columns are in the condition. Open to any suggestions here, additionally the rowcount of the table is only expected to be around 20-30K rows but I want to make sure any and all searches on the table are fast. Thanks!

• C# Threading and Sql Connections

  I have a method that attempts to update a sql server database in an ASP.NET application. If the update fails, it catches the exception and then queues the update in MSMQ, and then spins up a new thread that will later de-queue the pending update and try again. When the thread starts, it fails to open a database connection because it is attempting to connect using Network Service as the login. The sql connection is using Windows Authentication, and will work outside of the thread. If I put a breakpoint in the code that executes inside the new thread and check the Thread.CurrentPrincipal, it shows the Identity as being the correct user. Why is the sql connection attempting to be opened by the Network Service account? I can elaborate further is necessary. Thanks.

• What do you enjoy about programming?

  Some of us here(or is it just me?) enjoy programming. Even if we're not being paid for it, and in some cases, even though the end result will not do anything for us. For example, many people do the Project Euler problems just for fun, and in the end nothing was really "accomplished" materially. What is it that makes us enjoy programming? How is programming different from another job? You don't see an accountant going home to do some accounting on their own time just for the pure joy of it. How are we different? (also, if anyone has some ideas on how to tag this, then please do correct it for me.. )

• Awk appears to disconnect my DB2 session when piping

  Hello. I'm attempting to run the following command in Korn Shell (ksh): set -A INDEXES `db2 "describe indexes for table ${TABSCHEMA}.${TABNAME} show detail" | awk '{print $1"."$2}'` What I'm attempting to achieve is place a list of the indexes over a particular table into an array which I can later iterate through. The problem is, when I run the above command the contents of the array starts with the error message of 'SQL1024N' (which is telling me that the database connection does not exist). However, if I remove the 'awk' at the end of the statement as so: set -A INDEXES `db2 "describe indexes for table ${TABSCHEMA}.${TABNAME} show detail"` it works just fine (well, to the extent its returning data. Obviously without the awk I'm not capturing the correct data). Does anyone know why the awk is having this affect? I appreciate there is more than one way to get this data, but it baffles me as to why this is happening. Thanks in advance. Greg.
