• Remove Dell Openmanage from Windows 2008

  I have installed Dell Openmanage Server Agent 4.2.2 on Windows Server 2008. I need the newer version, so I need to install this version first. However, outside some registry references pointing to sources that aren't there, there is little or no trace of it being installed. For example, no trace of the program files or an entry in Prgrams And Features. Still, installing a newer version keeps coming up with an older version that needs to be removed first. When I try to install version 4.2.2 to repair and eventually remove it, it gives an error: Dell Openmanage Server Agent - Error An error was encountered while testing machine type. Failure openingen required handle to .DLL. Dell Openmanage Server Agent cannot continue the installation. Setup will exit now. I haven't found anything using different parts of the error messages as search terms.

• Shorten Emacs timeout of ~/.emacs read

  My ~/.emacs start-up file is stored in my AFS home directory. Often when I login to a linux machine I will forget to renew my AFS credentials before attempting to edit a local (non-AFS) file with Emacs. When this happens Emacs will attempt to load ~./emacs but cannot because it is in AFS space where I do not have access. Eventually (after a minute or so) Emacs will give up trying to load ~./emacs and continue. But waiting for Emacs to timeout is annoying (typing Ctrl-Z does not seem to interrupt this timeout). I want to shorten the amount of time that Emacs waits before giving up. I have tried the suggestion at this site which says to put the following code in the site-start.el file: (with-timeout (4) (load remote-.emacs)) However, when I do that I get the error Error in init file: Symbol's value as variable is void: remote-\.emacs whenever starting Emacs. How can I shorten this timeout?

• Windows 7 Not Recognizing Any Hardware, Linux Recognizing Hardware

  I have a new desktop computer with two SSDs: one running Linux Mint 15 (SSD1), the other running Windows 7 (SSD2). My mint runs perfectly - USB wireless adapter is recognized, SSD2 (connected by SATA) is recognized and accessible through the filesystem, Ethernet works, etc. However, my Windows 7 is not recognizing any of these devices - even plugging in a regular ethernet cable doesn't work. It seems that it's not recognizing any network adapters, and it also doesn't recognize SSD1, connected to the mainboard by SATA. I've installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled Windows multiple times, but the problem persists. I used the Windows 7 CD to install Windows on a machine previously, and that time around, I didn't have any problems, which leads me to suspect that this might be a hardware issue, specifically with the mainboard. My mainboard is an MSI-7641 model, the 760GM-P34 FX. It uses an AMD Chipset and an AMD processor. Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and how to fix it?

  I have a file server that exports as NFS. On an Ubuntu machine I mount that, then try to export it as an NFS volume. When I go to export it, I get the message: exportfs: /test/nfs-mount-point does not support NFS export How can I get this to work, or at least get more information as to what the problem is? • Libvirt installation - Centos

  I am currently using Centos 6. I want to use the latest version of libvirt (libvirt 0.9.4). The machine already has libvirt 0.8.1 installed . I did yum remove libvirt to remove the existing libvirt and I compiled 0.9.4 from source using : ./configure --prefix=/ make make install ldconfig /etc/init.d/libvirtd start After the installation is complete, I wanted to use the virsh interface. Once I enter virsh , I get : virsh /lib/libvirt.so.0: version 'LIBVIRT_PRIVATE 0.8.1' not found (required by virsh) Can somone let me know how to solve this issue? • Problem starting Glassfish on a VPS

  I am attempting to install Glassfishv3 on my Ubuntu (8.04) VPS using Java 1.6. I initially tried starting the server using: asadmin start-domain and received the following error message: JVM failed to start: com.sun.enterprise.admin.launcher.GFLauncherException: The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Command start-domain failed. I attempted to run it again and received a different message: Waiting for DAS to start Error starting domain: domain1. The server exited prematurely with exit code 1. Before it died, it produced the following output: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. Command start-domain failed. If I run cat /proc/meminfo I get the following (all other values are 0kB): MemTotal: 1310720 kB MemFree: 1150668 kB LowTotal: 1310720 kB LowFree: 1150668 kB I have checked the contents of glassfish/glassfish/domains/domain1/config/domain.xml and the JVM setting is: -Xmx512m Any help on resolving this problem would be appreciated.

    This sys.dm_exec_sessions DMV is another Server-Scoped DMV which returns information for each authenticated session that is running on your SQL Server box. Lets take a look at some of the information that this DMV returns. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_sessions This DMV is very similar to the DMV we reviewed yesterday, sys.dm_exec_requests, and returns some of the same information such as reads, writes, and status for a given session_id (SPID). But this DMV returns additional information such as the Host name of the machine that owns the SPID, the program that is being used to connect to SQL Server, and the Client interface name. In addition to this information, this DMV also provides useful information on session level settings that may be on or off such as quoted identifier, arithabort, ansi padding, ansi nulls, etc. This DMV will also provide information about what specific isolation level the session is executing under and if the default deadlock priority for your SPID has been changed from the default. Lastly, this DMV provides you with an Original Login Name, which comes in handy whenever you have some type of context switching taking place due to an ‘EXECUTE AS’ statement being used and you need to identify the original login that started a session.   In continuation of my previous post about using Calendar Overlay with new SharePoint 2010 when you have other Calendar view in any other lists in SharePoint. Now the other option for Overlay we have is with Exchange. You can overlay current users (logged in user) personal Calendar (from Exchange) onto a existing SharePoint calendar, in any list, by using new Overlay feature. Here is an example: Yes, you have to point to your OWA and Exchange WS url. It can also go and find your web service url, when you click find. In my case, it converted machine name into FQDN. That was smart… I had initial configuration issue, that my test users (Administrator!) didn’t have corresponding Exchange e-mail in SharePoint profile. So you have to ensure that your profiles are in sync with AD/Exchange for e-mail. It picks up current user’s e-mail from profile to pull data from Exchange calendar. My calendar in OWA… Same calendar in Outlook 2010… I think, new Calendar Overlay feature fills a great void. Users can now view SharePoint information within context of their personal calendar. • Fedora to Fedora remote desktop does not work (connection closed error, even after setting everything up)

  I'm trying to use remote desktop on my laptop (running Fedora) to my desktop (also running Fedora) on the same local network. I configured Remote Desktop on my desktop via System - Preferences - Remote Desktop, verified that the port is open by nmap, and attempted to connect from my laptop via vinagre (also tried appending :5900 for the port, and using the ip address). In all cases, the connection fails with a popup that says "Connection closed\n Connection to host was closed." EDIT: I am able to use vinagre from the desktop to remote desktop into itself, just not from one machine to the other. I tried vncviewer and a similar problem occurs (unable connect to socket: No route to host (113))

  Sometimes I just want to see an App description, and when I click on it, my browser goes to a page from Apple which immediately starts to screw up my machine. Reason: Heavy iTunes launches and eats up 95% of my system resources. Beach ball for minutes! And now I want to browse podcasts and it makes me so angry that I can't just have a normal browser. For example, inside iTunes I can't open things in a new window so that I don't get lost from where I came from. It's so limited and memory consuming. Maybe there's a way how to browse the iTunes store contents with a normal web browser?

• inetd / xinetd not working under cygwin

  I am trying to use xinetd (or inetd) with netcat to act as a TCP proxy. This setup works on Linux without issue. Under Cygwin, either as a service or from the a Cygwin command line, the (x)inetd fails to open netcat, with the error "no such file or directory". I have tried specifying /usr/bin/nc, /usr/bin/nc.exe, /cygdrive/d/cygwin/usr/bin/nc.exe, d:\cygwin\bin\nc.exe, and a TON of other combinations of forward flashes, backslashes, Windows paths and Cygwin paths. No matter what, I get errno 2, no such file or dir. Any ideas? I need this working ASAP. Edit: I thought it may have to do with it being in d:\cygwin (lame hardcoding?) but I tested it on a machine with cygwin on C:\, problem exists there too.

• OS X not booting after upgrading LibXML2

  I tried upgrading the version of LibXML2 in my machine to run some propietary software. Compiled as 32-bit (-arch i386) and restarted to see if it worked. Now when I try to boot I can only get into the spinning screen and it just sits there. Restarting in verbose mode (Cmd-V) does not show any error in the process, it just freezes after "AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement: initialization complete". I can't from any CD either (if I press c on startup it just spins the disk around and then stops in the same spinner screen). I've also reset the PRAM/NVRAM to discard any problems with that and it´s still not fixed. Any pointers of what might´ve gone wrong? (Latest gen MBP, running 10.6.3)

• Load Average runaway

  Is there any way to chase down lockups and runaway load averages? Every so often (pretty randomly) I'll get my load average spike up over 5 usually to around 10-15 and sometimes as high as 75 (dual core machine), and cause my system to lock for an indeterminate amount of time. The only thing I can possibly chase it to is using nVidia fakeraid (RAID-1) with JFS on top of that for my /home partition. Also I noticed that when my load averages spike, the power management system doesn't step up my processor speed from 1.6 to its maximum 2.13Ghz clock speed (not sure if this makes a huge difference with this problem). Any ideas?

• Subversion error: Repository moved permanently to please relocate

  I've set up subversion and apache on my server. If I browse to it through my webbrowser it works fine (http://svn.host.com/reposname). However, if I do a checkout on my machine I get the following error: Command: Checkout from http://svn.host.com/reposname, revision HEAD, Fully recursive, Externals included Error: Repository moved permanently to 'http://svn.host.com/reposname/'; please relocate I checked apache's error log, but it doesn't say anything. My repositories are stored under: /var/www/svn/repos/ My website is stored under: /var/www/vhosts/x/... Here's the conf file for the subdomain: <Location /> Options +indexes DAV svn SVNParentPath /var/www/svn/repos/ AuthType Basic AuthName "Authorization Realm" AuthUserFile /var/www/svn/auth/svn.htpasswd Require valid-user </Location> Authentication works fine. • Installing Xen 4.0.1 from Source on Ubuntu 10.10

  I'm trying to install Xen 4.0.1 from Source on Ubuntu 10.10 Server Edition. I started with a clean machine and followed the instructions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Xen.   Firefox 15 includes an all new PDF reader built into the browser–for those of you wondering, that means you can finally disable the Adobe PDF Plugin and uninstall it once and for all. Note: obviously if you need to access more advanced PDF features, you’ll still need the Adobe plugin. For most of us, however, the built-in viewer is fine, or you could download PDF files and read them in the offline Adobe Reader. Enabling Firefox’s Built-in PDF Reader Open Firefox and navigate to about:config. This will bring up a sarcastic warning telling you that you might void your warranty, just click the “I’ll be careful, I promise!” button to move on. Now you will need to search for: browser.preferences.inContent When you find it, right click on it and select Toggle from the context menu. Next you will need enable the actual PDF Reader feature, you can do this by searching for: pdfjs.disabled That’s all there is to it, you can even drag PDF files on your local machine on t0 the Firefox windows to view them!   What happens when a Windows 7 backup disk is full? I've been trying to find documentation on the issue without success. Does Windows 7 automatically delete the oldest backup files to free up space or does it force you manually pick and choose which files to delete? Time Machine automatically deletes the oldest copy of files, but as far as I can tell Windows 7 makes you manually choose. I keep getting a running out of disk space for backup notice on Windows 7 without any option to not warn me and just delete the oldest files automatically...

• Windows Cannot Boot - 0xc0000225

  I've had Windows 7 installed for months on my Thinkpad T60 laptop and today out of the blue when I tried to boot, it started the Windows loading screen and immediately I got this error: Status: 0xc0000225 Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. Through some research, I see people get this problem when a repartitioning goes wrong or there's a problem with their dual boot. I'm not dual booting my machine and I haven't messed with my partitions since I installed the OS. This error is truly out of the blue. I've run memory diagnostics from a Windows boot disc and hard drive diagnostics from my BIOS and neither found a problem. I don't have any backups to restore from so I'm hoping to find a fix for this. Anyone seen this kind of thing before? Thanks

• Remote desktop is slow when connecting to a computer which is part of a domain

  Hey all, We have two windows 2003 machines, one is a DC and another is joined to the domain of the DC. These machines are not locally available to us so we have to remote desktop into them. When we first got the machines remote desktop was blazing as the machines are only a couple of miles away. I then installed AD and setup routing and remote access, I also setup DNS on the DC. Now when I try remote Desktop into the machine which is part of the domain (not the DC) it is painfully slow! Remote Desktop onto the DC is also noticeably slower! Another problem is that our FTP to the DC has also become slow. I don't know what other information I can provide, as I am new to Sys Admin (moving over from development). The speed should be fast as these machines are only a couple of miles away. Any help / suggestions is greatly appreciated! Thanks Peuge

• Basic proxy with OpenSSH, Cygwin, Putty

  I know this is probably a common question, but after looking around for a few hours (on this site and others), I can't find a solution. I'm trying to set up a simple proxy. I already have a server running Windows Server 2008. I've installed Cygwin and have OpenSSH installed. I also have sshd (the openssh daemon) running. Port 22 is forwarded correctly. On my client side I have Putty on a Windows 7 machine. I can successfully open a connection to my server and log in to access the shell. So what do I do next? Do I just name the ports I want tunneled in Putty or do I need to tell my SSH server what to do with those ports? Thanks for the help. Let me know if I left anything out.
