  • Can I connect a switch to a router?

    Ok sorry if this is the most basic question in the world but for years I have needed more ethernet ports in my room and my whole house is wired with 1 ethernet port in each room, I also wanted to be able to plug into the room ethernet port with another router to get more plugins and that wasn't possibe I don't think. So can you plug a switch into this and have more ports with just as much speed?

    I'm trying to determine which of the three main browsers (Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer) are the most secure and safe. Right now, in our system, Firefox 10 and IE 8 are cleared as 'good-to-use', but Chrome isn't. Is Chrome really less secure than Firefox and IE, or are the IT folks are slow at updating (Firefox 12 and IE 9 and 10 preview are out right now)? Completely rewrote question.   • Convert mkv/h264 video so it can be played on a "mid-range" Sony Ericsson phone. (using Ubuntu).

    Hi As a little experiment I thinking of converting some video/movies/tv-series into a format that could be playable on my K850, but to be a little bit more generic in this question let's say "mid range Sony Ericsson" phone since they all more or less behave the same and has the same screen resolution (240 x 320). I am looking for command line based tools (for Ubuntu), since I am thinking about writing a "convert and move" script later if it is successful. A lot of the video I have is encoded in mkv/h264, but since that is not supported by the phone I guess that I need to convert it into some mp4/mpeg4 low quality video. After some googling it seems like a good candidate for the job is ffmpeg, but that seems to be a very versatile tool with a lot of magic tricks. Am I on the right track? And if so how do I use ffmpeg to do this? Thanks Johan Update: After plating a little bit with ffmeg I noticed that it only uses 1 of my 4 cores, so the transcoding takes forever. I found a arg called -threads but that did not change much, maybe I got it wrong. I found this in the official manual: If you transfer video clips using another program than Media Go™, we recommend that you select H.264 Baseline profile video, up to QVGA at 30 fps, VBR 384 kbps (max 768 kps) with AAC+ audio at 128 kbps (max 255 kbps), 48 kHz and stereo audio in mp4 file format. So the idea to use H264 seems to be correct.

I never considered overclocking before because I know myself and I know I'd mess up my hardware in some stupid accident or mistake, but if I can just do it through software it'd be nice to give it a shot.   • how to link with static mySQL C library with Visual Studio 2008?

    Hi, My project is running fine, but its requirement for some DLLs means it cannot be simply dragged and dropped by the end user. The DLLs are not loaded when put side by side with my executable, because my executable is not an application, and its location is not in the few locations where Windows looks for DLL. I already asked a question about how to make their loading happen. None of the suggestions worked (see the question at http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2637499/how-can-a-win32-app-plugin-load-its-dll-in-its-own-directory) So I am now exploring another way: get rid of the DLLs altogether, and link with static versions of them. This is failing for the last of those DLLs. So I am at this point where all but one of the libraries are statically linked, and everything is fine. The last library is the standard C library for mySQL, aka Connector/C. The problem I have may or may not be related with that origin. Whenever I switched to the static library in the linker additional dependency, I get the following errors (log at the end): 1- about 40 duplicate symbols (e.g. _toupper) mutually between LIBCMT.lib and MSVCRT.lib. Interestingly, I can't control the inclusion of these two libraries: they are from Visual Studio and automatically included. So why are these symbol duplicate when I include mySQL's static lib, but not its DLL?     I like to use the following commands to manage 'TIME_WAIT', in the hope to free up resources. echo 20 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/tcp_fin_timeout sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_reuse=1 sysctl -w net.ipv4.tcp_tw_recycle=1 I found something interesting while doing a tcpdump. Sometimes if a client makes a connection (syn), the server will not reply (syn -ack). My question is, could it be because of the top three commands.

    My first question so please be gentle :) I have a client who is insisting that they have to let their third party vendor support access to there server directly from the internet via RDP. Our policy does not allow direct access to the infrastructure from outside of the data centre for administration except from an approved VPN connection and then virtual desktop there on to the servers. I am now in the situation where I must give good reasons why it is dangerous to use RDP over the public internet. any help would be appreciated Thanks in advance Stuart

Is there a place online I can download the 8.1 upgrade from home on my fast internet so I can do a network or usb install at the office? I don't want to have to download 3GB+ of updates on each and every machine through the Windows store over our slow internet connection.     I'm working on re-arranging a number of the shell folders in windows 7 to utilize Dropbox to keep a set of machines in sync. I'd like to create a .reg file which I can use to update the locations of these folders rather than manually changing them from the UI, but I don't want to rely on the path to the home folder being the same each time. So my question is, is it possible to replace the REG_SZ values in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders with REG_EXPAND_SZ values specifying an offset from %HOME% instead of an exact path?

  • Need help making site available externally

    I'm trying to open a hole in the firewall (ASA 5505, v8.2) to allow external access to a Web application. Via ASDM (6.3?), I've added the server as a Public Server, which creates a static NAT entry [I'm using the public IP that is assigned to 'dynamic NAT--outgoing' for the LAN, after confirming on the Cisco forums that it wouldn't bring everyone's access crashing down] and an incoming rule "any... public_ip... https... allow" but traffic is still not getting through. When I look at the log viewer, it says it's denied by access-group outside_access_in, implicit rule, which is "any any ip deny" I haven't had much experience with Cisco management. I can't see what I'm missing to allow this connection through, and I'm wondering if there's anything else special I have to add. I tried adding a rule (several variations) within that access-group to allow https to the server, but it never made a difference. Maybe I haven't found the right combination? :P I also made sure the Windows firewall is open on port 443, although I'm pretty sure the current problem is Cisco, because of the logs. :) Any ideas? If you need more information, please let me know. Thanks Edit: First of all, I had this backward. (Sorry) Traffic is being blocked by access-group "inside_access_out" which is what confused me in the first place. I guess I confused myself again in the midst of typing the question.   • Take VMware VM State Home With Me

    I work in VMs day in and day out, it's wonderful, encapsulating all the stuff I need for development in a contained unit. My question is: I want to be able to take my VM home with me, the problem is the VM is 30GB, and it takes about 30 minutes to copy that much data to my external HDD. Is it possible to somehow save the "state" of the VM, go home, and just resume it like a I would a laptop? Oh... almost forgot, I use VMware Workstation 6.5

Visual studio will not add references. Question Is there a way to change this behaviour for Visual Basic?
