• Internet Explorer 9 beta installation problem

  I'm running Vista SP2, x64. Because I wanted to test out the IE9 beta, I downloaded the English-language installer for 64-bit Vista systems. Running the installer is fine until it starts downloading required updates. The progress bar doesn't get far before it completely stops moving. Then after 20 minutes to an hour, it will tell me that there's an update I have to install, but as soon as I click OK it sends me an error message, telling me that it can't go to the url of the update which is here. So I manually enter it into my browser, which prompts me to download a standalone update. After that's been downloaded and I run it, it tells me that the update does not apply to my system. I'd appreciate any help to solving my problem.

• How to block a website completely?

  I want to block some sites(e.g. youtube,news sites ), because I have a problem with procrastination and I find these websites affect my productivity very much. I used to block them by adding them to HOSTS file. However, gradually every time I want to take a break, I open the hosts file and comment my block again. Is there any way I can block the websites and cannot (at least a little bit hard, e.g. I have to reboot my pc) unblock them. I have no access to the router or any firewall, besides the ones on my computer. I just want to FORCE myself to work without any chance to procrastinate.

• Can I extend my total RAM by buying more, and what kind do I need to buy

  I currently have 4 GB total RAM and I would like to get some more, to bring it to a total of 8 GB. Is it possible to simply buy another 4 GB and bring it to 8? If so, what kind should I be buying? There is a lot of different possibilities, DDR3, DDR2, clock speed, etc. I am kind of lost among all this. My current setup goes like this: ACER EG43M mainboard Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz 4 total RAM slots, 2 occupied by 2 GB sticks According to CPU-Z, my memory type is DDR3 (not sure how reliable that is) Full CPU-Z dump Windows 7 64-bit So basically, I want to know whether it's possible to extend my current RAM to get 8 GB total by buying another 4, and if so, what kind of RAM do I need? Note that I am not looking for shopping recommendations. I'm worried about the hardware compatibility.

• Resolution is Being Stupid. Help me?

  I'm having trouble with a new computer I bought a few days ago. I have come to the conclusion that the resolution of the screen is too small, at the moment it is 1024x768 and I think it should be 1280x960, due to a message given at the resolution tab of the control panel. It states: (!) If your resolution is below 1280x960, some items on the screen may not fit on the screen. The computer is an Asus A54H and runs 64-bit operating system with Windows 7 Home Premium. • Clarify git stash for me in switching branches

  I've been working on branch A. My work there is not finished, but I need to switch to branch B for a while. It looks like stash is the command to use. I've found a number of references showing how to use stash to save your changes, but I'm a bit confused. All of the references say something like, when you're ready to go back, just do git stash pop. They don't, however, tell me if I need to switch back to branch A before doing that, though. So, do I manually go back to branch A before running stash pop, or do I stay in branch B, and the actual act of running stash pop will send me back to branch A where I left off with it?

• Strings are UTF-16&hellip;. There is an error in XML document (1, 1).

  I had a situation today where an xml document had a directive indicating it was utf-8.  So, the code in question was reading in the “string” of that xml then attempting to de-serialize it using an Xsd generated type. What you end up with is an exception indicating that there’s an error in the Xml document at (1,1) or something to that effect. • Replication with AK8

  Hello folks, This came up today and I want to make sure it's clear. Remember the "deferred update" I spoke about in my "Upgrade to AK8" entry just a bit ago? It's important to understand that this deferred update changes the way replication works. It is necessary that systems with the deferred update applied only replicate with other systems that have also had this deferred update applied. So if you apply it, your system can NOT replicate with ANY other system that has NOT had it applied, even if that other system is running AK8!!! Got it??? Remember, we do have a new version of the 2011 code for the older systems that do not want to upgrade to AK8. This 2011.1.8 code ALSO HAS this same deferred update in it. So, if you upgrade your system to AK8, and then apply the deferred update, and you have another system running either 2011.1.8 or AK8, you can replicate with them again once they apply the deferred update for multiple initiator groups. Yes, even if you're not using LUNs. Here is what it looks like if you try. It will fail.

  I have an ASUS Pentium-R Dual Core CPU running at 2.20Ghz. It has 4 gb of built in ram, currently running a 64 bit Windows 7 . I just started graduate school and Im wondering whether I should go in for a new laptop or just repair the nagging battery on my current one. My requirements include - -Ability to support IDE's - I may end up running Eclipse, Visual Studio's and the like to help with my work. - Ability to run multiple VM's (not concurrently). Im currently running a Ubuntu 12 and 9 as VM's (not sure if this is overloading the system) - I'm a non gamer so I really dont care about a minor glitch caused by running a uber heavy game. -In addition I will have heavy use of Office Application Software and will be using my computer to watch movies and stream media.   In 2007, I started a site based on streaming and downloading poker strategy videos. At that point in time, the best solution I came up with for supporting users of Macs and PCs was to provide the videos in both WMV and FLV formats. Later we added an M4V version to support iPhones/iPods. Obviously, things have changed a bit since that time. I would like to revisit our format decision to see if there is anything better that we could offer, preferrably with wider support among all devices (so that we can reduce the number of formats offered, if possible). Is FLV + WMV + M4V the best solution? Is there something else we should consider? What about Android devices?

• Software Architecture: How to divide work to a network of computers?

  Imagine a scenario as follows: Lets say you have a central computer which generates a lot of data. This data must go through some processing, which unfortunately takes longer than to generate. In order for the processing to catch up with real time, we plug in more slave computers. Further, we must take into account the possibility of slaves dropping out of the network mid-job as well as additional slaves being added. The central computer should ensure that all jobs are finished to its satisfaction, and that jobs dropped by a slave are retasked to another. The main question is: What approach should I use to achieve this? But perhaps the following would help me arrive at an answer: Is there a name or design pattern to what I am trying to do? What domain of knowledge do I need to achieve the goal of getting these computers to talk to each other? (eg. will a database, which I have some knowledge of, be enough or will this involve sockets, which I have yet to have knowledge of?) Are there any examples of such a system? The main question is a bit general so it would be good to have a starting point/reference point. Note I am assuming constraints of c++ and windows so solutions pointing in that direction would be appreciated.

• an issue with VMWare Workstation 10 and three monitors

  I'm having a bit of a problem with using three monitors with VMWare Workstation 10. When only two monitors are enabled in the system I have an option to "Cycle Multiple Monitors", available from the View menu (in full screen). When I enable the third monitor that option is no longer in the menu and I can only use one monitor at a time. I've found this article and a "Choose a Monitor Layout" button is mentioned there but I'm unable to see it anywhere. I'm using Windows 8.1 as the host and Ubuntu 14.04 as the guest. The graphics card is AMD Radeon R9 290x with latest beta drivers

I have background in many fields on Computer Science but never got to focus on networking, server management, etc. What I'm asking is for recommended books, Basically, I would like to be able to be proficient and understand well how to manage domain names, zones, setting up mail servers, being able to install easily any web server, and such. Everything needed for proper server management through the shell. I will probably stick with Parallels, or Cpanel for a bit. But I dislike those, especially how it add a lot of intruding user accounts and configs on the file system. Thank you

• Windows 7 spins up HDD when files should be on SSD

  I run 64-bit Windows 7 Ultimate off a Corsair 12GB SSD (cmfssd-128gbg2d) and I've got two older HDDs I use for storing media. However even though the operating system and all the programs are installed on the SSD, frequently when I'm starting programs, I can hear the computer spin up one of the HDDs before the app starts and I'm not sure why (and I don't know which drive it is). For programs that should open very quickly - Programmer's Notepad, Calculator (the basic one that comes with Windows), etc. - having to wait several seconds sometimes can be pretty obnoxious. Avoiding wait times like that are why I got the SSD in the first place. Is there any way to tell why that's happening? I'm happy to provide more information but I'm not sure what's important. Any help would be really appreciated!

• OSX : Setup for filestorage in medium business

  In our office every machine runs OSX. In search of an ideal storage and sharing solution we decided to let OSX Server handle all account information and auth requests whereas an 7TB QNAP provides NFS shares. All shares are published as mounts in the companywide LDAP. As it turns out, handling permissions in this situation is very clumsy (e.g. inherit permissions on newly created files). Unfortunately using NFS4 in combination with ACLs did not solve the problem. As a possible solution I set up a iSCSI connection between QNAP and the machine running OSX Server which in turn serves the LUN as AFP share. Permission handling works like a charm for this setup. Although I am a bit concerned about the performance of this setup. As we are a fast growing company we expect the solution to serve at least 100 clients while using files aprox. above 100MB each. Are there any known drawbacks of this solution?

• iSCSI drives suddenly inaccessible or corrupted

  I have two NAS (Seagate Black Armors) connected to our network through iSCSI to a Dell Optiplex 760 running 32-bit Windows 7 and Windows iSCSI Initiator. For some unknown reason within the last week both are reportedly inaccessible and/or corrupt (that is the error message generated when I attempt to open the on the iSCSI computer). However, connecting to either of them via direct IP goes off without a hitch. I've tried Error checking but received "The disk check could not be performed because Windows could not access the disk." I've tried System Recover to a date almost two weeks back thinking Windows update may have caused the issue but there is no change. Anyone have an explanation and/or a solution to get them reconnected? Thanks.

  My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

• Does it make a difference to read from a file instead of from MySQL?

  My web server currently is quite loaded. And I have a PHP file that is accessed very often remotely. The PHP file basically makes a MySQL query and returns a JSON formatted string. I am thinking to use a Cron job to write the necessary data into a file every 15 mins, so the PHP file doesn't make a MySQL query, instead it reads from the file. Does it make a difference? I mean to alleviate the server loading (CPU/MySQL) a bit?

• Windows 7 network share issues w/XP & SBS 2K3

  Hi, my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit computer has issues when accessing SBS 2K3 or XP shares. 1) It will not automagically reconnect upon boot. I have a batch file that will do this that utilizes net use (yes I have /persist:yes, but it does not help) to re-map them. 2) After trying to use it for a few minutes, it will not work. Any attempt to access the drive letter that was mapped causes windows Explorer, or other apps. to lock up. These shares work fine from XP & Vista computers. When this happens the internet works fine, just the mapped drives do not work correctly.

• Remote Destkop into Server 2008R2 with Firewall On

  I've got a fresh install of Remove Server 2008 R2, 64 bit. The problem is I can't Remote Destkop into it. I clicked 'Enable Remote Desktop' inside 'Initial Configuration Tasks', and set it to: Allow connections only from computers running Remote Destkop with Network Level Authentication (more secure). The thing is, this used to work just fine, and then it stopped. The only way I can get it to work now is if I turn of Windows Firewall completely off (Public network location settings). Obviously I don't want to run the server with firewall off, so what specific settings in Firewall do I need to disable, or am I doing something wrong?

  I did install Windows 7 64 bit on my ex. Windows 8 pro Asus x551c "Ultrabook". The CD with the drivers isn't useable since its a windows 8 only DVD-Rom. I got the Wi-Fi and other stuff running and already tryed 3 of the Intel-HD Graphic drivers for win7 64Bit i found with google. No one was compatible with my pc. Any suggestions how to get this running? I hate windows 8 and dont want to get forced to use it.

• What is this PHP process? It is crippling my server

  This process has been using 65% of my site CPU and has lasted for about 10 minutes now (aren't processes only supposed to go for a couple seconds?) It is obviously something with mysql. This makes sense because I have a lot of queries going, but something still seems a bit odd... This could have something to do with my bad PDO connection that I mentioned in the previous question. Perhaps I am opening too many connections or something like that? I know about boot repairing, but how can I use it, If i cant boot ubuntu?? I heard about terrible problems with windows 8-linux dual boot, but I really need ubuntu because of school. I read many tutorials how to install ubuntu next to windows8, but despite that a problem accured. Here is what I have done. I have MSI GE60, windows(64bit) is running on mSATA SSD C drive. HDD is divided to two partitions for windows and I left there 50GB for ubuntu. I downloaded ubuntu 12.04.3desktop-amd64(64bit), created bootable USB using Universal USB Installer (recommended on Ubuntu site). I disabled USB legacy support (that Ubuntu could be installed in EFI mode- I was following instructions on Ubuntu site), and also Secure Boot (windows is now angry with me because I turned it off- when I start windows it informs me I should enable that). I inserted USB rebooted computer and chose install ubuntu, divided free 50GB space to swap(2000MB) and rest as ext4 main storage space for ubuntu. Installation passed normally, Ubuntu then asked me to reboot computer. After reboot windows 8 started. Now I can't start ubuntu. When I restart win8 to uefi there is possibility to boot ubuntu, but when I choose it, it crashes. When I choose try ubunfu from connected USB, nothing happend, still dark screed. What is wrong? Can you help me? I am in hurry to do it because of school. Thanks.

• USB 3.0 randomly disconnecting and reconnecting

  I had an old laptop that died so I have bought a new one. I have taken the 2.5 SATA hard drive from the old laptop and I have put it into an external 2.5 SATA enclosure usb 3.0 and I connect it to the new laptop. My new laptop has Windows 8 64 bit installed. When I connect the external hard drive to the new laptop throught USB 3.0 port, it gets randomly disconnecting and reconnecting continuously, even when I am not using it. Also happens if I connect to another usb 3.0 port. Also I have observed that If I connect the external hard drive to a USB 2.0 port instead of an USB 3.0 port all work ok, no randomly disconnection and reconnection occurs. It only happens when I connect it to an USB 3.0 port. Some ideas to solve this issue?

• A solid unity plugin to stream youtube video

  I've been searching for hours for a Unity 4.5 plugin that allows users to watch youtube video in an android app. (I've found several solutions for IOS but not android!). Can anyone give me some pointers? I've tried uwebkit(which only works for IOS), vuforia, and many google.com suggestions I found online. None of them worked and its very fustrating. I just want to watch a youtube video via an unity app in android phone/tablet. It shouldn't be that hard of a task /=. Oh, I've also tried Unity support forum, the response rate is a bit lower in SO/SU.
