• What is the netmask equivalent on the verision of route for the Mac

  In order to create some special routes for debugging I used the following command on my linux server: sudo route add -net 10.78.0.0 netmask 255.255.0.0 gw 10.101.1.1 which works, and sets up the routes I need. But when I run the same command on my Mac I get: route: bad address: netmask I'm guessing that the version of route that is included in OS X requires a different format but I'm at a loss to figure it out.

  I just tried to install Windows 7 x64 SP1 on my desktop computer, but 10 minutes in to the installation i get this error: The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect. ERROR_INVALID_NAME(0x8007007b) My guess is that I have to reinstall the OS, but I'm wondering if I somehow can get a more detailed error message. I want to know what has got the wrong name/path?   hostname -f says "hostname: the specified hostname is invalid". The hostname (FQDN) specified in /etc/hostname is also listed in /etc/hosts and is pingable. No actual DNS server yet of the host knows. Is this a reason of the error reported or something else? (the OS is Ubuntu 10.04 Server). Update: registering the host at a DNS server (so that the name can be successfully resolved via Internet) did not help.

If put in a hibernate, it wakes up normally, but if turned of completely, after turning on there is no "beep" sound from BIOS and HD lamp blinks for a while then stops. When I hit reset in that state, it bots normally. What is going on and how could I fix it?

• Disable USB powered light from command line?

  I have a nice little USB light which has no off switch, it is 'on' for the duration of being plugged in. My question is, is there a way of disabling the USB port so as to turn off the light while it is still plugged in? Preferably, this could be done from the command line, but if it's possible at all that would be really cool regardless. I use Mac and Linux, but am interested to learn if this is possible in any OS, or if physical hardware prevents usage like this.

  Is there any way to get rid of the drop down cc bcc reply-to etc. field menu in the compose new message window in Mail in Mac OS X Snow Leopard? The offending menu is the one immediately to the left of the Subject field when composing a new message, and it interrupts me as I try to tab from To: to Subject: to the message body.   INFORMIX-SE 7.2: I would like to dedicate a hard disk, exclusively for my dbname.dbs directory which holds all the .dat and .idx files, and create a ramdisk for my /tmp temporary files in order to improve performance. I would also like to strip down the OS from any unecessary files and processes to minimize overhead for my dedicated application. Is this a good idea and are there any roadmaps for accomplishing this?

I have gone through the Terminal Services Configuration to make sure that we had the RDP-Tcp connection enabled and I've checked to see that the server was listening to port 3389. • CPU Test Similar to Memtest?

  I need an easy way to do system stability tests. I have come to rely on Prime95 which does a fantastic job of proving stability (or instability) very quickly; but it requires an OS installed. I would like something like Prime95 that stresses both CPU and RAM (maybe PCI-Ex bus also?) but runs in a nice bootable binary like Memtest86+ does, so I can boot it from a thumbdrive. Does such a thing exist?
