On Red Hat el5, du -x apparently avoids traversal into other filesystems. While this may be so, it does not appear to do anything if run from the / directory. On Solaris 10, the equivalent flag is du -d, which apparently packs no surprises, allowing Sun to uphold its legacy of inconvenience effortlessly. (I'm hoping I've just been doing it wrong.) I offer up for sacrifice my Frankenstein's monster. Tell me how ugly it is. Tell me I should download forbidden 3rd party software. Tell me I should perform unauthorized coreutils updates, piecemeal, across 2000 systems, with no single sign-on, no authorized keys, and no network update capability. • Managing BES Software Configurations

  Hi, I am having problems with OTA deployment of a bespoke application that we have written. I have read loads of threads elsewhere and I have got mixed help, but for my particular case none of it has really helped. So I thought I would explain my exact situation and try and get some help here. I am running BES version 4.1.5 (Bundle 79) for Microsoft Exchange. The application we have written is split into 5 modules, which we control, and another 4 modules which are 3rd party libraries that we require. So for our modules the version numbers are regularly changing but for the others they are pretty much always going to remain the same. We have an alx file set up that identifies all of the files required and in fact I am able to create a software configuration and deploy the application with no problems. What I am trying to do however is maintain multiple versions of our application on the BES and be able to select which version I want to deploy to each user. I have tried this a number of ways (as I said I have read lots of other threads with solutions to this problem) but each seems to come with its own problem. First of all I tried just creating different configurations for each version of the application, but because they each had the same application ID the BES informed me that I couldn't do this. I read somewhere that the solution was to create a second shared folder (e.g. \Program Files\Common Files\RIM) and add the apploader stuff and the new version of the app to this folder. I could then create a second software configuration that would have the same application ID. The result of this seemed promising to start with. When I changed the config that was assigned to a user the new version was pushed out fine. But afterwards the BES reported that the device state was invalid, which meant I couldn't push anything else until I reactivated the device. I guess this is because the first config was never set to disallowed so the old version wasn't removed and the device essentially reported that it had multiple versions of the same application installed. The next suggestion I got was to change the application ID for each version, e.g. to include the version number. This meant that each version of the application could be included in a single configuration and I could set one to disallowed and the other to required. Initially this worked and the first version was deployed. But when I switched (i.e. the old version became disallowed and the new version required) the BES reported upgrade required and removed the old version. The device restarts and the old version is gone but the new version is not pushed out. I checked the BES and it still said Upgrade Required. (You will notice I have removed actual names and email addresses etc for privacy reasons. But one question: where does the name of the module group come from? In my case it is close to the application ID but doesn't include the version number that I added at the end in order to get it to work. Is that information embedded in a COD file or something??) So it is reporting a duplicate module group on the device? What does this mean? I checked the device properties (as reported on the BES) and it confirms that the modules with the old version numbers are still present on the device. So the application has been removed but not the modules?? I checked the device and the modules are gone, so it is just the BES reporting that they are still there?? I checked the database and it has the modules in questions in the SyncDeviceMgmt table. If I delete these from the DB the BES changes to report Install Required, and low and behold the new version of the app is pushed out. So at the end of all that, my question is: does anyone have any other suggestions of how to handle upgrading our bespoke application OTA from the BES? Or can anyone point out something I am doing wrong in what I described above that might solve the problems I am having? I guess the question is why does the database maintain that the modules are on the device after they are removed? Thanks for any help you can provide.

• Need help identiying a nasty rootkit in Windows

  I have a nasty rootkit that not tools seem to be able to idenity. I know for sure it's a rootkit, but I can figure out which rootkit it is. Here's what I gathered so far: It creates multiple copies of itself in %HOME%\Local Settings\Temp with names like Q.EXE, IAJARZ.exe, etc., and install them as hidden services. These EXE have SysInternals identifiers in them so they're definitely rootkits. It hooked very deep in the system, including file read/write, security policies, registry read/write, and possibly WinSock/TCP/IP. When going to Sophos.com to download their software, the rootkit inject something called Microsoft Ajax Tootkit into the page, which injects code into the email submission form in order to redirect it. (EDIT: I might have panicked. Looks like Sophos does use an AJAZ email form, their form is just broken on Chrome so it looked like a mail form injection attack, the link is http://www.sophos.com/en-us/products/free-tools/virus-removal-tool/download.aspx ) Super-Antispyware found a lot of spyware cookies, in the name of .kaspersky.2o7.net, etc. (just chedk 2o7.net, looks like it's a legit ad company) I tried comparing DNS lookup from the infected systems and from system in other physical locations, no DNS redirections it seems. I used dd to copy the MBR and compared it with the MBR provided by ms-sys package, no differences so it's not infecting MBR. No antivirus or rootkit scanner be able to identify it. Most of them can't even find it. I tried scanning, in-situ (normal mode), in safe mode, and boot to linux live CD. Scanners used: Avast, Sophos anti rootkit, Kasersky TDSSKiller, GMER, RootkitRevealer, and many others. Kaspersky reported some unsigned system files that ought to be signed (e.g. tcpip.sys), and reported a number of MD5 mismatches. But otherwise couldn't identify anything based on signature. When running Sysinternal RootkitRevealer and Sophos AntiRootkit, CPU usage goes up to 100% and gets stucked. The Rootkit is blocking them. When trying running/installing HiJackThis, RootkitRevealer and some other scanners, it tells me system security policy prevent running/installing it. The list of malicious acitivities go on and on. here's a sample of logs from all my scans. In particular, aswSnx.SYS, apnenfno.sys and PROCMON20.SYS has a huge number of hooks. It's hard to tell if the rootkit replaced legit program files like aswSnx.SYS (from Avast) and PROCMON20.SYS (from Sysinternal Process Monitor). I can't find whether apnenfno.sys is from a legit program. Help to identify it is appreciated. • No Internet access while being connected to VPN using Cisco VPN Client 5.

  Hi, I have an access to corporate VPN using Cisco VPN Client 5.0.00:0340, but when I'm connected to it, I don't have an Internet access. I'm using Windows XP SP3. As it was suggested here http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?t=209167 , I tried to enable "Allow local LAN Access" but it doesn't work. I also tried a second solution - deleting entry using "route" command, but it didn't help. I used "route delete 192.168.100.222". It's a third day of my attempts to solve this issue and I don't have an idea what else to do. I'm not very experienced in VPN stuff, but I know something about networking. Basing on my knowledge, I think that it's theoretically possible to achieve Internet access using my local network and only corporate stuff to be routed using VPN connection. I think that theoretically this should look like this: every IP being inside by corporation - VPN interface IP every other IP - my ethernet interface I've tried many possibilities of how to change those routes, but neither of them work. I'd really appreciate any help. • Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Windows XP - Repairing Corrupt System32\Config\System File

  My apologies for this long post. I would like to describe the mess I'm in then ask some questions about how to fix it: Starting up my Windows XP SP1 machine I got the following message: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM Tried restarting several times with same results then Googled the problem. Tried the fix described here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair%5Fwindows%5Fxp (since my CPU does not have XD buffer overflow protection I did not set /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN as OS Load Option). This did not work. I then found another fix for the problem on hardwareanalysis.com: Basically, boot to dos prompt (or recovery console if available) and make backups of the following files:- c:\windows\system32\config\system (to c:\windows\tmp\system.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\software (to c:\windows\tmp\software.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\sam (to c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\security (to c:\windows\tmp\security.bak) c:\windows\system32\config\default (to c:\windows\tmp\default.bak) then delete the above files (not the backups!) then copy the above files in c:\windows\repair to the c:\windows\system32\config directory restart your computer This did work (and I wish I'd done it first, since it was completely reversible, unlike the first method). However, afterwards I found that all the user accounts on the PC were gone. I resurrected them by copying the backed up security file back into the system32\config folder (I may have copied the SAM file from backup as well, I cannot remember clearly now). Now the PC boots up and I can log in. However things are still not right. I tried to alter one of the user accounts and found I could not access the User Accounts in the Control Panel. Microsoft KB 919292 had a fix for the problem. However, the fix failed with a Windows Installer error: The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance. Windows Installer 3.1 was already installed. I reinstalled it but continued to get the Windows Installer error whenever I tried to run the fix in KB 919292. I have since noticed another three problems: 1) Several applications on the PC no longer run, eg Microsoft Word. Shortcuts no longer seem to do anything and if I run the executables directly (eg for Word by running C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Winword.exe) I get a message similar to: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please run setup to install the application." even though the executable is clearly visible in Windows Explorer (and even though Word actually opens - the error dialog appears after Word has opened. Clicking OK to the error dialog closes Word). 2) One or the other of the two fixes I tried for the original problem caused new user profiles to be created. eg My old user profile under the Documents and Settings folder was Simon. The old one still exists but there is now a new one called Simon.DBQ2515. Obviously the new one is being used because Opera (my browser that still works) no longer sees the bookmarks file under my old profile. 3) Probably as a result of fooling around with the Security file, when I try to boot off the Windows XP CD and run the Recovery Console I am now asked for the administrator password. The only problem is there is no administrator account on the PC. There is one account, LocalAdmin, that has administrative rights but when I entered the password for that account it did not work. It is so long since I originally set up the PC that I cannot remember if the original administrator account ever had a password and, if so, what it was. So, my question is: How can I fix this mess? In particular: 1) Having tried the two fixes linked to above, have I irrepairably damaged the Windows instance, requiring a clean reinstallation of Windows + all applications, or should it be possible to get the machine working correctly again without such drastic measures? 2) Is there any way to get around the administrator password so I can use the Recovery Console again, given that there is no account called "administrator" and the password for the one account with admin privileges does not work (and that, before I started the second fix, I was not asked for an administrator password)? 3) Is there any easy way to fix the problem with the applications that think they are not installed? 4) Is there any easy way to fix the problem of the Windows Installer that does not work, even if reinstalled? • Updating with using custom class collection not working

  I've posted this yesterday on asp forum but no one replied so perhaps I'll have better luck here. For some reason the OnUpdating method does not pull new values from the grid which is in edit mode. I've search and have come across several blogs and sites, some sugesting that an ObjectDataSource is required in order to use the "e.NewValue" construct others provide code to the contrary. I don't get any errors - the variables in the code file would contain the old values rather then new ones. I don't want to use the ODS way of manipulating the data. My delete method works but not the update one. Can you suggest what is wrong with the code?   Hi everybody, I use a SQLite database and Entity Framework (with .net framework 3.5). I'm trying to execute a simple SQL non query command to create a new table in this datase. My Entity Framework already contains the object model for this table : I just want to generate the corresponding table using a command. (By the way, there is maybe a better way to do this. Any ideas someone :) My problem is that I'm not able to execute any command, even the simple commands. • Best practices for using the Entity Framework with WPF DataBinding

  I'm in the process of building my first real WPF application (i.e., the first intended to be used by someone besides me), and I'm still wrapping my head around the best way to do things in WPF. It's a fairly simple data access application using the still-fairly-new Entity Framework, but I haven't been able to find a lot of guidance online for the best way to use these two technologies (WPF and EF) together. So I thought I'd toss out how I'm approaching it, and see if anyone has any better suggestions. I'm using the Entity Framework with SQL Server 2008. The EF strikes me as both much more complicated than it needs to be, and not yet mature, but Linq-to-SQL is apparently dead, so I might as well use the technology that MS seems to be focusing on. This is a simple application, so I haven't (yet) seen fit to build a separate data layer around it. When I want to get at data, I use fairly simple Linq-to-Entity queries, usually straight from my code-behind, e.g.: var families = from family in entities.Family.Include("Person") orderby family.PrimaryLastName, family.Tag select family; Linq-to-Entity queries return an IOrderedQueryable result, which doesn't automatically reflect changes in the underlying data, e.g., if I add a new record via code to the entity data model, the existence of this new record is not automatically reflected in the various controls referencing the Linq query. Consequently, I'm throwing the results of these queries into an ObservableCollection, to capture underlying data changes: familyOC = new ObservableCollection<Family>(families.ToList()); I then map the ObservableCollection to a CollectionViewSource, so that I can get filtering, sorting, etc., without having to return to the database. familyCVS.Source = familyOC; familyCVS.View.Filter = new Predicate<object>(ApplyFamilyFilter); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("PrimaryLastName", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); familyCVS.View.SortDescriptions.Add(new System.ComponentModel.SortDescription("Tag", System.ComponentModel.ListSortDirection.Ascending)); I then bind the various controls and what-not to that CollectionViewSource: <ListBox DockPanel.Dock="Bottom" Margin="5,5,5,5" Name="familyList" ItemsSource="{Binding Source={StaticResource familyCVS}, Path=., Mode=TwoWay}" IsSynchronizedWithCurrentItem="True" ItemTemplate="{StaticResource familyTemplate}" SelectionChanged="familyList_SelectionChanged" /> When I need to add or delete records/objects, I manually do so from both the entity data model, and the ObservableCollection: private void DeletePerson(Person person) { entities.DeleteObject(person); entities.SaveChanges(); personOC.Remove(person); } I'm generally using StackPanel and DockPanel controls to position elements. Sometimes I'll use a Grid, but it seems hard to maintain: if you want to add a new row to the top of your grid, you have to touch every control directly hosted by the grid to tell it to use a new line. Uggh. (Microsoft has never really seemed to get the DRY concept.) I almost never use the VS WPF designer to add, modify or position controls. The WPF designer that comes with VS is sort of vaguely helpful to see what your form is going to look like, but even then, well, not really, especially if you're using data templates that aren't binding to data that's available at design time. If I need to edit my XAML, I take it like a man and do it manually. Most of my real code is in C# rather than XAML. As I've mentioned elsewhere, entirely aside from the fact that I'm not yet used to "thinking" in it, XAML strikes me as a clunky, ugly language, that also happens to come with poor designer and intellisense support, and that can't be debugged. Uggh. Consequently, whenever I can see clearly how to do something in C# code-behind that I can't easily see how to do in XAML, I do it in C#, with no apologies. There's been plenty written about how it's a good practice to almost never use code-behind in WPF page (say, for event-handling), but so far at least, that makes no sense to me whatsoever. Why should I do something in an ugly, clunky language with god-awful syntax, an astonishingly bad editor, and virtually no type safety, when I can use a nice, clean language like C# that has a world-class editor, near-perfect intellisense, and unparalleled type safety? So that's where I'm at. Any suggestions? Am I missing any big parts of this? Anything that I should really think about doing differently?

  I have enterprise aplication with ejb and war module, and since I created local interface web module wont deploy. It builds fine. EJB project is referenced inside web project. Also when I delete <ejb-local-ref> from web.xml it deploys, but then lookup method fails. • ASP.net FFMPEG video conversion receiving error: "Error number -2 occurred"

  Hello, I am attempting to integrate FFMPEG into my asp.net website. The process I am trying to complete is to upload a video, check if it is .avi, .mov, or .wmv and then convert this video into an mp4 using x264 so my flash player can play it. I am using an http handler (ashx) file to handle my upload. This is where I am also putting my conversion code. I am not sure if this is the best place to put it, but I wanted to see if i could at least get it working. Additionally, I was able to complete the conversion manually through cmd line. The error -2 comes up when i output the standard error from the process I executed. • "Launch Failed. Binary Not Found." Snow Leopard and Eclipse C/C++ IDE issue.

  Not a question, I've just scoured the internet in search of a solution for this problem and thought I'd share it with the good folks of SO. I'll put it in plain terms so that it's accessible to newbs. :) (Apologies if this is the wrong place -- just trying to be helpful.) This issue occurs with almost any user OS X Snow Leopard who tries to use the Eclipse C/C++ IDE, but is particularly annoying for the people (like me) who were using the Eclipse C/C++ IDE in Leopard, and were unable to work with Eclipse anymore when they upgraded. The issue occurs When users go to build/compile/link their software. They get the following error: Launch Failed. Binary Not Found. Further, the "binaries" branch in the project window on the left is simply nonexistent. THE PROBLEM: is that GCC 4.2 (the GNU Compiler Collection) that comes with Snow Leopard compiles binaries in 64-bit by default. Unfortunately, the linker that Eclipse uses does not understand 64-bit binaries; it reads 32-bit binaries. There may be other issues here, but in short, they culminate in no binary being generated, at least not one that Eclipse can read, which translates into Eclipse not finding the binaries. Hence the error. One solution is to add an -arch i686 flag when making the file, but manually making the file every time is annoying. Luckily for us, Snow Leopard also comes with GCC 4.0, which compiles in 32 bits by default. So one solution is merely to link this as the default compiler. This is the way I did it. THE SOLUTION: The GCCs are in /usr/bin, which is normally a hidden folder, so you can't see it in the Finder unless you explicitly tell the system that you want to see hidden folders. Anyway, what you want to do is go to the /usr/bin folder and delete the path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.2 and add a path that links the GCC command with GCC 4.0. In other words, when you or Eclipse try to access GCC, we want the command to go to the compiler that builds in 32 bits by default, so that the linker can read the files; we do not want it to go to the compiler that compiles in 64 bits. The best way to do this is to go to Applications/Utilities, and select the app called Terminal. A text prompt should come up. It should say something like "(Computer Name):~ (Username)$ " (with a space for you user input at the end). The way to accomplish the tasks above is to enter the following commands, entering each one in sequence VERBATIM, and pressing enter after each individual line. cd /usr/bin rm cc gcc c++ g++ ln -s gcc-4.0 cc ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc ln -s c++-4.0 c++ ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Like me, you will probably get an error that tells you you don't have permission to access these files. If so, try the following commands instead: cd /usr/bin sudo rm cc gcc c++ g++ sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 cc sudo ln -s gcc-4.0 gcc sudo ln -s c++-4.0 c++ sudo ln -s g++-4.0 g++ Sudo may prompt you for a password. If you've never used sudo before, try just pressing enter. If that doesn't work, try the password for your main admin account. OTHER POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS You may be able to enter build variables into Eclipse. I tried this, but I don't know enough about it. If you want to feel it out, the flag you will probably need is -arch i686. In earnest, GCC-4.0 worked for me all this time, and I don't see any reason to switch now. There may be a way to alter the default for the compiler itself, but once again, I don't know enough about it. Hope this has been helpful and informative. Good coding!

Before, I had it working based on the the index of a set of elements, but would have issues deleting, since the index would change in the xml file and not on the page (since I am using ajax). • C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

  EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong?   Well BindingList and ObservableCollection work great to keep data updated and to notify when one of it's objects has changed. However, when notifying a property is about to change, I think these options are not very good. • Where to Store the Protection Trial Info for Software Protection Purpose

  It might be duplicate with other questions, but I swear that I googled a lot and search at StackOverflow.com a lot, and I cannot find the answer to my question: In a C#.Net application, where to store the protection trial info, such as Expiration Date, Number of Used Times? I understand that, all kinds of Software Protection strategies can be cracked by a sophiscated hacker (because they can almost always get around the expiration checking step). But what I'm now going to do is just to protect it in a reasonable manner that a "common"/"advanced" user cannot screw it up. OK, in order to proof that I have googled and searched a lot at StackOverflow.com, I'm listing all the possible strategies I got: 1. Registry Entry First, some users might not have the access to even read the Registry table. Second, if we put the Protection Trial Info in a Registry Entry, the user can always find it out where it is by comparing the differences before and after the software installation. They can just simply change it. OK, you might say that we should encrypt the Protection Trial Info, yes we can do that. But what if the user just change their system date before installing? OK, you might say that we should also put a last-used date, if something is wrong, the last-used date could work as a protection guide. But what if the user just uninstall the software and delete all Registry Entries related to this software, and then reinstall the software? I have no idea on how to deal with this. Please help. A Plain File First, there are some places to put the plain file: 2.a) a simple XML file under software installation path 2.b) configuration file Again, the user can just uninstall the software and remove these plain file(s), and reinstall the software. - The Software Itself If we put the protection trial info (Expiration Date, we cannot put Number of Used Times) in the software itself, it is still susceptible to the cases I mentioned above. Furthermore, it's not even cool to do so. - A Trial Product-Key It works like a licensing process, that is, we put the Trial info into an RSA-signed string. However, it requires too many steps for a user to have a try of using the software (they might lose patience): 4.a) The user downloads the software; 4.b) The user sends an email to request a Trial Product-Key by providing user name (or email) or hardware info; 4.c) The server receives the request, RSA-signs it and send back to the user; 4.d) The user can now use it under the condition of (Expiration Date & Number of Used Times). Now, the server has a record of the user's username or hardware info, so the user will be rejected to request a second trial. Is it legal to collection hardware info? In a word, the user has to do one more extra step (request a Trial Product Key) just for having a try of using the software, which is not cool (thinking myself as a user). NOTE: This question is not about the Licensing, instead, it's about where to store the TRIAL info. After the trial expires, the user should ask for a license (CD-Key/Product-Key). • Overwrite archetypes in Maven

  Hello again! I'm having some trouble using Maven for my archetypes and I will need to overwrite some. I launch an instruction that does an archetype:generate in an archetype already existing directory. Is there a parameter that let's me overwrite existing archetypes? I have search the maven definitve guide but it states that the only parameters accepted are: -DgroupId -DartifactId -Dversion -DpackageName -DarchetypeGroupId -DarchetypeArtifactId -DarchetypeVersion -DinteractiveMode I could just search the directory and delete the files, but this proccess is going to be done automatically (so no human involved, no brains involved) and I wouldn't like he machine deleting things around. • Saving UIImagePickerController images to Core Data without crashing

  I have been trying to minimize my memory footprint with UIImagePickerController, but I'm starting to think that the memory problems I am having are resulting from poor memory management, instead of a particular way to handle the UIImagePickerController object. My workflow is this: The "Edit Image" button is clicked, which presents a UIActionSheet. This action sheet allows you to delete, take a picture, choose from the library, or cancel. It leads me to believe that I am not getting that full image out of memory the correct way. What am I missing here? And on a second note, does the Camera source use significantly more memory than the Photo Albums source? I tend to get more crashes when using the camera.
