• MySQL server installation problems (windows)

  Hi guys, I'm trying to install some CMS software (Wiccle). I was using XAMPP's MySQL but was getting a lot of errors (the same configuration works on another machine) so thought I'd install MySQL Community Edition to see if the proplem was related to the MySQL server. When I install and run the MySQL Community Edition service, however, it only works with my XAMPP password, and contains the same tables as the XAMPP install. Is there a common local database file where the database and login info is stored? Any help appreciated

• Sharing files between multiple sites using only desktop software

  Our organisation has three sites; a head office, where the master copies of company files are stored, plus two branch offices using only workstations and a NAS or two. Currently we're talking about <10GB. At the main office, we have no admin access to the file server, as this is entirely controlled by the larger institution where we are located. For the same reason, we have no VPN remote access to this network. Instead, we simply have access to a network share using over a Novell LAN. Question: how can we share files between offices in way that minimises latency, i.e. that gives us a mirror of the main network share at each site? (There is little likelihood of concurrent editing, and we can live with the odd file conflict now and again). Up to now branch office staff have had to use GotoMyPC-type solutions to remotely access files held at the main office. Or email. I was hoping to use Google Drive on a dedicated workstation at each office to sync the contents of the network share (head office) or NAS (branch offices) via the cloud, but at my last attempt (29 Jun '12), the Google Drive installer would not allow me to designate the remote network share as the "target" folder. (I chose Google Drive over Drobbox et al. as we already use GMail for corporate mail) The next idea was to use a designated workstation at head office to mirror the network share to a local drive, then use Google Drive to push that to the cloud. This seems a step too far. Nor do I have any good ideas about how to achieve this network/local mirroring, as we can't, for example, install the rsync daemon on the server. I do not want to use Google Drive locally on each workstation as this will inconvenience users, and more importantly, move files off the backed-up, well-maintained (UPS, RAID etc) network share at head office. Our budget is only in the £100's. Should we perhaps just ditch the head office server and use something like JungleDisk? At least this presents the user with what appears to be a mapped drive.

• rsync not writing files

  I'm trying to setup rsync to backup a remote directory to my local drive. I cd to the directory that I want to pull the files to, then I enter: rsync -vrtW [email protected]:~/public_html I enter the password then it starts running. I get all the files listed, but none of them actually transfer. What am I missing? Thanks

• Share the same subnet between Internal network and VPN Clients

  I would like to set up a configuration where VPN clients connecting to my Forefront TMG can access all the resources of my Internal network without having the to use the option "Use default gateway on remote network" on the VPN's TCP/IP Ipv4 Advanced Settings. This is important to me, since they can use their own internet while accessing my network through VPN (the security implications of this are acceptable on my cenario) My Internal network runs on 10.50.75.x, and I set up Forefront TMG to relay the DHCP of my Internal network to the VPN clients, so they get IPs from the same range as the Internal network. This setup initially works, and the VPN clients use their own internet, and can access anything that is on the internal network. However, after a while, HTTP Proxy Traffic from the Internal network starts getting routed to the IP of the RRAS Dial In Interface, instead of the IP of the Internal's network gateway. When this happens, the HTTP Proxy starts getting denied for obvious reasons. My first question is: does this happen because Forefront TMG wasn't designed to handle a cenario that I described above, and it "loses itself"? My second question is: Is there any way to solve this problem, either through configuration or firewall policies? My third question is: If there's no way that it can work with the cenario above, is there another cenario that will solve my problem, and do what I'd like it to do properly?   The NTPv3 RFC describes five operating modes: Symmetric Active (1): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of its peer. By operating in this mode the host announces its willingness to synchronize and be synchronized by the peer. Symmetric Passive (2): This type of association is ordinarily created upon arrival of a message from a peer operating in the symmetric active mode and persists only as long as the peer is reachable and operating at a stratum level less than or equal to the host; otherwise, the association is dissolved. However, the association will always persist until at least one message has been sent in reply. By operating in this mode the host announces its willingness to synchronize and be synchronized by the peer. Client (3): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of its peer. By operating in this mode the host, usually a LAN workstation, announces its willingness to be synchronized by, but not to synchronize the peer. Server (4): This type of association is ordinarily created upon arrival of a client request message and exists only in order to reply to that request, after which the association is dissolved. By operating in this mode the host, usually a LAN time server, announces its willingness to synchronize, but not to be synchronized by the peer. Broadcast (5): A host operating in this mode sends periodic messages regardless of the reachability state or stratum of the peers. It seems to me, though, that any host except a leaf node would probably be in several modes. For example, I might have a local area network with three NTP servers, each in Symmetric Active (1) mode with respect to one another. They would also each be clients (3) of one of the many public stratum two time servers. Lastly, they would all server as servers (4) to the many local clients. Is the point that they're only in a given mode for a moment during the synchronization? If so, how does a host know to switch? I'm only looking for enough depth here to discuss the issue in an educated manner, not to write a custom time server.

• Word 2007 consistently crashes when I use my VPN

  Hi, My Office 2007 consistently crashes when I use it while connected to the VPN. This happens even with local files. When I try to paste stuff, it tries to connect to the printer (over VPN) and if I stop the process (which in itself blocks for about a minute), then Word 2007 is bound to crash a few seconds afterwords. My VPN is Check Point VPN-1 SecureClient Anyone knows what can be done with this problem?

• Share PC over network

  I have a server installed on one local Win7 machine (say as 192.168.2.14:8080/myAPP) and I want to access that server from different computer (say ip as 192.168.2.16). Even they are connected to same network I can't access server from other computer. I guess the problem is in firewall. This is working when I disable firewall and not working when I allow certain ports in windows firewall but keeping firewall on (As a rule to allow incoming connections).

• Roaming profile is not loaded when user's password expires and is changed

  Our password policy makes users change pw every 30 days, when this happens they sometimes find they are logged on with a local profile and none of their settings. This generally only happens when the PC was slow at logging onto the network, but in this case I know it had plenty of time to do so. I can't work out why this is happening, is it related to a slow link?

• Inbound connections to a ubuntu machine running a VPN

  Is it possible to open inbound connections to a machine connected to a VPN server? The machine is running ubuntu 9.10 with two network devices(a wireless card and ethernet port), I can connect to my machine locally using a local ip but when I try port forward using my router I can't connect from my external ip. Is there a way around this? I figure with 2 network devices I can vpn over one and use the other for inbound connections but I can't figure out how to do this. Thanks

  Does anyone know where plesk pulls its list of available shells under the domain setup page? I am on a box which is missing /bin/bash (chroot), though the majority of the system users on the machine have the shell: /usr/local/psa/bin/chrootsh On a redhat/centos machine, chrootsh is provided by the base psa package. I have also checked that chrootsh is specified in /etc/shells. I have poked around the psa database, but have not been able to ascertain where the drop down box is populated from.

  Is there any way to use Windows 8 with time in UTC in BIOS? I know there is a way to do it in Windows 7 (in this question: Does Windows 7 support UTC as BIOS time?), but this solution makes my system unbootable. Windows expects the bios clock to be set to local time by default. In Windows 7 and before, there was a registry hack to change this behavior so that it could expect UTC – is there an equivalent in Windows 8?
