  • How do I restore a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop to facotry defaults

    I got a Dell Inspiron 1521 laptop from the local computer store, it is obviously a used machine. When I got it the data from the previous user was on it they did not do a wipe. Anyhow Dell was not being any help to me on wiping the data. Does anyone know how I get the machine to restore Windows to the factory settings. Also I do not have the system disc that come with the computer, I just have the computer and the power cord.

  • Can I read a smartcard in a virtual machine?

    My employer requires a smartcard to login to their web-based remote working platform. I want to access this platform by using a Remote Desktop Connection on to my Windows 7 Virtual Machine, with the smartcard plugged into my home PC. However, whilst I can see the smartcard on my home PC, it doesn't appear in the virtual machine, despite me having "Smart Cards" enabled in the Local Resources page of Remote Desktop Connection. Is it possible to get this working?

    Hi all, currently my logrotate configuration adds a single number after the rotated log file: mylogfile.log is rotated to mylogfile.log.1 I would like to change the extension to mylogfile.log.Current date does anyone know a way to do this? my log rotate code is :- /usr/local/jboss/jboss-3.2.7-ND1/server/default/log/consolelog.log { copytruncate rotate 1 missingok notifempty } Currently am renaming the rotated file with script.is there any option to change the extension of log rotate default configuration.   • How do I install Skype on computer so that anyone who logs in does NOT have to go through the initial config?

    I installed Skype when logged on to the (local) admin account. Now, when I log off that, and log on as myname on the domain, I have to click through the intial setup steps (after you've already run the installer) of Skype. So, I have to click next to get through the mic setup/test, and it asks me if I want to take a pic. How do I get it so that any person who logs in can just open Skype and go straight to the login screen? Windows 7 64 bit, 2008R2

  • How do I preserve ownership permissions when copying to an external volume?

    When I upgrade or reinstall linux I backup my home folder by running sudo cp -pr /home/users/yitzchak /media/externalHDD/backups. When I do this I get errors saying that permissions could not be preserved and when I copy the folder back onto my local disk I see that ownership has been changed to root and I have to chown all of them back, which has to be done manually piecemeal because not all files have the same group. Is there any way around that?

    I am copying a 4.7 GB dvd contents into my local drive but the total size of DVD is being shown as 415 GB!. How is that possible? Because of which it is showing less space (as my drive is of 150 GB) and thus cannot be copied? I am surprised that how a 4.7 GB dvd contains 415 GB data? I am not sure what are steps involved in applying a new ssl certificate. I know at the least I will install the new certificate(s) in the local store.   • Is there a way to replicate a very large file shares in real-time?

    I have an hourly cron job that copies about 40GB of data from a source folder into a new folder with the hour appended on the end. When it's done, the job prunes anything older than 24 hours. This data changes very often during work hours and is on a samba file share. Here's how the folder structure looks: \server\Version.1 \server\Version.2 \server\Version.3 ... \server\Version.24 The contents of each new folder compared to the last one usually doesn't change very much, since this is a hourly job. Now you might be thinking that I'm an idiot for setting dreaming this up. Truth is, I just found out. It's actually been used for years and is so incredibly simple, anyone could delete the ENTIRE 40GB share (imagine that dialog spooling up... deleting thousands and thousands of files) and it would actually be faster to restore by moving the latest copy back to the source than it took to delete. Brilliant! Now to top this off, I need to efficiently replicate this 960GB of "mostly similar" data to a remote server over WAN link, with the replication happening as close to real-time as possible -- think hot spare, disaster recovery, etc. My first thought was rsync. Total failure. Rsync sees it sees a deletion of the folder that is 24 hours old and the addition of a new folder with 30GB of data to sync! I also looked at rdiff-backup and unison, they both appear to use similar algorithms and do not keep enough meta-data to do this intelligently. Best thing that I can find "out of the box" to do this is Windows Server "Distributed Filesystem Replication" which uses "Remote Differential Compression" -- After reading the background information on how this works, it actually looks like exactly what I need. Problem: Both servers are running Linux. D'oh! One approach to this I'm looking at is this, say it's 5AM and the cron job finishes: New Version.5 folder arrives at on local server SSH to remote server and copy Version.4 to Version.5 Run rsync on the local server pushing changes to the remote server. Rsync finally knows to do a differential copy between Version.4 and Version.5 Is there a smarter way to replicate Samba shares as close to real-time as possible? Anything out there that does "Remote Differential Compression" on Linux?

    I am using Xampp for a local dev server, I am trying to upgrade it so I can use the latest version of PHP. I had it installed in my c drive c:\webserver\php I just installed everything new in a new drive D d:\webserver\php I then boot everything up and then I run phpinfo() and it is still showing my old version of PHP and even points to the old php installation C:\webserver\php\php.ini Am I missing something obvious here?

    Is there on windows any default timeout for tcp connection? So when no answere is received the connection would be closed. Why im asking is that on one machine the connection is closed afther 5 minutes.(Windows XP) Running the same client - server connection on other machine the connection is kept open forever like it should be.   • Rewrite new url and block old url in nginx

    I have a local folder /bar, and I want to be able access via http://www.example.com/foo. So I have the config like rewrite ^/foo/(.*)$ /bar/$1 last; At the same time, I want to block public access to the real url /bar, Then I add the config like location ~* ^/bar{ return 404; } But when I add this url into the config, the 1st config above not work, now both return 404 Anything I should fix in order to make the rewrite work?     My admin share C$ has been removed causing our server managed security - Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, to stop updating this client because it is unable to create local tasks. I've searched for two days now, lots of stuff about disabling C$ or allowing network access via a regedit - but nothing about restoring a missing "default admin share C$". OK I can recreate C$ from the mmc but it's removed on a reboot. System is Win7 Pro 64-bit on a domain Very grateful for any help... Nick
